I do hope the audience are polite & refrain from talking through her set.
-
Vanessa was awesome tonight! The audience, however, was not. Everyone was talking loudly during every song except atm and wh, in which they were screaming the words at the top of their lungs. I was so grateful to be there though, and she played 10 songs which was the longest set i've seen her play in a while. Pretty sweet considering she was only the opening act. Setlist was:
Hands On Me
Heroes & Thieves
White Houses
Fairweather Friends
A Thousand Miles
Tall Tales For Spring
I Don't Want To Be A Bride
Carousel
Get Good
London
I got vids of all the new songs, but since the audience was obnoxious, I don't know how well they came out. I have a 5 hour drive home now so I will see tomorrow.
Oh yeah, I got let in for soundcheck too and she tried to play HAWBTW but she said she didn't practice it enough to feel good about playing it. I am so glad I went. :)
-
Oh yeah and she had Ari with her, and Mark is back! And he said tour in late June.
-
Thanks for going and getting recordings! How did you swing that ticket anyway?? Sounds like a typical college crowd; eh, oh well. I can't wait until she tours this summer then we know the people in the audience will appreciate her for more than just the famous songs and be polite and not talk during songs they may not know. Don't hate me for asking but...who is Mark? Thanks for the set list too! I hope you had fun and got home safely!

I am so glad you were able to get in! Did you happen to get video of her practicing HAWBTW during the soundcheck? I love to hear her practice, with mistakes and all, especially that song :)
And I don't know who Mark is either......
-
Thanks Nicole!! So happy that Mark is back!!
Mark is her tour manager, body guard, sound guy extraordinaire since day 1!!

OHHH yes, I remember the bit about Private Radio in the Nashiville concert recording we have on the site. gotchya, thanks!
-
wooow, thank you nicole :)
can't wait for the records. hey guys, it's the first time she plays all the new songs we've heard, right?
-
Yep, the first time that she had played all of them in one setlist. :)
-
I'm so excited to hear these new versions even if there are people talking throughout. Thank you so much for going and getting us this though!
-

I had the same thought! It's a great set (though I could do without ATM, maybe Ordinary Day or Pretty Baby instead--with that said, I understand why she has to sing it, especially at these types of shows.)
-

I realllllllllly hope we get a lot of advanced notice for this tour and shows. I was looking at the 'tour' section of nessaholics.com and saw that there have been times where she will do 3 shows in a row in the same state. I think it would be awesome to follow her through a given state the best I can! It seems like she is in New England area a lot which is good for this Western NY girl! I'm hoping for lots of shows this way (Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse) I can make those for sure (if I'm not working so I need advanced notice!!) I just wish it was June already :/
-
Glad you enjoyed it. Shame about the audience, but as mentioned it's to be expected at these types of shows ... *sigh*.
-

-
Girl, you know these kids can't hold their horses.
Wow!! I can't even get over how rude people are. Why do people go to shows when all they are going to do is talk? RUDE & annoying. Poor V. I'm glad you were there for her.
-
Thanks for the videos!!
I wish the audience wasn't talking so much so we could hear them better.. :-\
-
Yeah the audience was really pissing me off. Vanessa even commented and said something like "well, it sure is a Saturday night!"
-
thank you for the videos nicole!
yeah, i wish the audience was more respectful.
-
omg, what's that in the beginning of carousel?
-
Learning To Fly by Tom Petty
-
Woah, thats one loud croud. Thankyou so much for the vids :)
-
Thank you very much for posting your videos.
Vanessa must have the patience of a saint because if it were me up there, I'd have to stop and yell at them to shut up regardless of whether or not they were there to see me perform. Were they that bad when the Goo Goo Dolls came on?
Also, I love the Tom Petty intro thing she did with "Carousel". That Petty song actually reminds me of "Fairweather Friends".
I think her vocals have improved drastically over the years. It'll be interesting to see her perform on tour because I've noticed she usually shouts more when the crowds are noisy. The soft vocals come out in concerts like the one she did at Sunset where she sounds absolutely lovely. She's been shouting her way through songs for a while, so it's nice seeing her actually USE her voice properley. I don't know if she's been taking vocal lessons or not, but whatever she's been doing it seems to be working. I wonder if Steve Osborne got her to experiment more with her vocals in the studio?
-
Wow. She looks AMAZING in those vids! Thanks Nicole!
LOVE what she did with the Carousel intro... Never saw the similarities between the two songs!!! Even cuter was that pensive look she gives just before she began to sing "Learning to Fly".
Very mischievous?
Very cute!!!
On a side note, do you think her intro is actually off of the album? I mean is it gonna be there? Or was this just a crowd attention getter? Maybe I think this could be handled in the Carousel section of the forum!!!?
-
I shall watch these vids when I'm not as tired and have a little less alcohol in me ;) Thanks Nicole. :)
-
love the harmonization on "carousel"! wonder if it's on the album, and if so, who harmonizes with her, because now we've heard stevie + vanessa, and ari? + vanessa on this song.
[edit] and the harmonization on "get good"!
-
Thanks for all of the videos! (: I appreciate them all, though the crowd's a bit noisy. Thanks again.
-
Oh, that "Learning To Fly" part was beautiful.
And IDWTBAB & Get Good sound awesome with all the harmonizing.
-
Thankyou so much for bringing this back! ;D this croud is very loud, makes me feel bad for Vanessa. And, is it just me or is she plugging her ear in the Get Good video? Haha
-
Yes, she is. Hahahahaha
And in Fair-Weather Friends, does anyone notice that she had a mistake on the first verse, saying "Did I ever leave Chicago?" instead of "You're in L.A., not Chicago." She didn't even bothered to repeat it from the top, unlike in her performance in the previous shows.
-
I can't wait to get home to watch all the videos! This 12 hour shift is sooo slooowww tonight
-
Thanks for the videos, she sounds great. I love the intro of Carousel too but I think that is not in the album, she will only play it at the live shows.

I wonder if she didn't have it planned. It almost looked like it just dawned on her to do it. On the other hand it does seem like maybe she was going to change her mind and not do it, then decided to just go ahead. So cute.
Love the 'new' background vocals on Carousel, I wonder if that will be the children's choir on the record?

That's what I thought too - that it was a snap decision to do Learning To Fly before Carousel. I am glad she took the risk and did it.
-
I love that she kept the part that Stevie originally sang, at 3.25. It's so beautiful and i think it makes a nice change, then just the verse again.
And Learning to Fly was a nice twist, her look before did seem that it was done on a whim and not planned.
Thanks for the recordings!

Even impromptu... That was so beautiful!!! I mean her voice has definitely matured. It was so... I can't find the word!!! I mean when she pulled on the flaaaaaayieeeeeyaaaaaaaaah... aaaaaaaahaaay ya know? It was like WOW! I wanna listen to her do a cover of this song!!! ;-)
-
Learning To Fly was planned - she did it at soundcheck

Something's telling me that's how the song's gonna start and if so that's gonna be a great ear catcher... ya know? Imagine listening to that song starting on the radio and it then becomes Carousel and just... WOW!

I don't want Carousel to start with it. It would make the song a mash-up of the two and Carousel wouldn't be Carousel.
Maybe include the mash-up in deluxe edition or the like?

YAY! LATE JUNE!!!!!!!!!!! I love you Nicole!!!!!!! Thanks for the info! (and the videos)
And Mark is back? Awesome! I have to get him a beer sometime! ;D
-
Yes mark is a total sweetheart and im glad he will be on her tour this summer! And i seriously doubt learning to fly is on the album. That would be kinda dumb.
-
I love how Vanessa did Learning to Fly. I doubt it will be on the album, but I hope she does it again at her concerts. Maybe we can get a clearer recording of it. It was really pretty. :)
-
The "Learning to Fly" intro on "Carousel" is pretty dope. It reminded me of the cover Missy Higgins does of "Learning to Fly."
Thanks for the review and the videos. :)

good to know! her face is still priceless before she started playing it

I think the children's choir was on IDWTBAB, on the "Kings under lavender skies" part.
-
yeah, but they probably are on more than just one song.
but actually i'd like the backing vocals in carousel to be by vanessa. with children's choir i guess it would sound heavy, i don't know. with vanessa it would be kinda raw, just the way i like it :)
-
the choir recorded four songs for vanessa's album, so it's possible they're on "carousel".

I thought that was the case.

the crowd should be shot.

HA! Superlike.

I was going to go with punched, but that works, too.

Maybe both? ;)

I dont mess around when it comes to V ;)
-
At first when I heard the first new version Fair-Weather Friends where it was changed down a couple of keys, I kindof lost my initial love for it. But I'm really liking this live version, even if the audience is loud as f.
-
Ugh, I wish I could punch everyone who's talking loudly; how rude.
