Title: Oh The Grass is Green, but can you tell me, can you feel it?
Post by: Afterglow on April 23, 2005, 06:00:33 am
Well, My god-father or something, is piolot of airplanes, so he brought a couple of Americans to Brazil, the couple before coming into the airplane, they bought COKE thinking that in Brazil doesn't exist coke, then, when my god-father got to São Paulo with them, the man saw the biulding, cars and etc and asked..

When are we going to get to BRAZIL?

My god-father said.. we're already here haha
hahahahha

They thought that in Brazil we were like " INDIANS or something TARZAN "

They got impressed with the people using JEANS and eating fast-food...

BRAZIL IS NOT A FOREST

This is where I livei in, GOIANIA CITY (UGLY)

This is SÃO PAULO, where the couple got to
(http://www.mssnetwave.com.br/marcelo/brasil/fotos_estados/sp%20pontes.jpg)

SO, THE AMERICAN PEOPLE SHOULD STOP THINKING THAT BRAZIL IS ONLY A BIG AND LOST FOREST

We have COMPUTERS, CELL PHONES, HOUSE, TELEPHONE, TV and many things

he is not saying that, but for those who have no contact with foreign people (like you ppl do trough forums and internet and more) they do come here expecting the exotic lol

an example...
at the museum of natural history in NYC they have a big map of brazil and Amazonia, and I remember they had amazon forest mapped troughout 99%of brazil  , which even before the europeans came here would have not been like that. So that does give a wrong image as in what to expect.

Thats where I lived... not nearly as big as Murillo's Goiania, but much prettier

I don't know if any of you remember me telling silly Brasil stories on the O boards, but one of them was about a Brasilian girl going to Canada to do her student exchange.  Her host family brought a box of clothes and boots and things for her to wear once she got off the plane, because they imagined that she would be an indian wearing a loincloth and coconut bra.

So please, just because there is a high concentration of idiots in the United States does not mean we are all idiots, but it also does not mean we are the only idiots.  Unfortunately, the world as a whole is full of them.

Murillo, quit making generalizations about stupid things.  If you think that Brasilians aren't welcome here then maybe you should blame people like this guy (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/05/21/national/main509664.shtml) who was in the international news after killing a 13 year old girl and gave Brasilians a bad name.

No, no

Americans hate Brazilians because Brazilians want to go to UNITED STATES to work.... I understand, I know that you don't like other people from another country coming into your country and stealing your job

But, EVERYBODY, EVERYONE, ALL THE BRAZILIANS that are or have been to United States, say the same thing

" They don't like us, they treat us bad, they humiliate us "
Everybody.... No one says that you americans like Brazilians

So, they want to travel to UNITED STATES and they don't get the VISTO and they decide to go through MEXICO.... And that's so bad...

I know Brazilians that went to US and had to suffer, to eat bad, to sleep bad, to be humiliated...

your teacher is ignorant.  If you take his/her thoughts without validating them for yourself then you're no better then he is.

There are several americans on this board and you've heard from quite a few that there is no hatred towards people from "another country"

I have a personal problem with people coming to the US and *not* working but that holds fast for people from the US as well.  My opinions on people coming from another country to America is they are held to the same standard as someone from America and visa versa.  I would say I am sooner annoyed by the fact that people from america live on welfare indefinitely when someone from another country (be it Brazil) works their a** off to make a living for themselves.

You're English. If you are of Saxon decent, you've been there for 1500-2000 years (or even longer, too lazy to look it up). If you're of Norman decent, that's been there for a bit less than 1000 years. That's far too long to maintain any sort of separate cultural identity.

In contrast, most of my family arrived here 125-150 years ago.

Do you watch the soap/soup opera called " America "?
This soap/soup opera talks about it

Brazilians trying to get a new life in UNITED STATES and they have to go there through MEXICO because UNITED STATES don't let them be there...
So, when the Brazilians get to UNITED STATES, they are so sad..
And it's not only my Teacher and my opinion

I know many many many people that go to UNITED STATES to try to get a little money to biuld a house up, or buy a car, or help their children...

But they suffer a lot... because they say that AMERICANS hate and hate BRAZILIANS..

I'm not talking about you, it's not your case, I know that there're many cool Americans........ (Vanessa Carlton for exemple) but I say because I know it.. I know what I'm saying, I'm not joking or kidding...

And I know all of it, because my mother is tried to work hard here and don't get any money, she's really thinking of Going to USA..

Because all the Brazilians that have been to USA, says to my mother,.... DON'T GO.. YOU'LL SUFFER A LOT.. AND ETC...

So I thought " London or Australia "... she's really wanting to go to one of these country and she'll take me of course...

I don't wanna live in Brazil because here I won't have future..

I was born to be rich and I'll be...... suffering or not.... I'll be someone in life..... and it depends only on my wishes......

" For the first time I'm proud of myself for saying all that I feel "

My family came over from ireland in the potato famine, moved to scotland and then down to England so i have a 'mixed heritage' just as much as you do- i don't know anyone who is purely 'English'- whatever that means. Nationalism and 'Heritage' are concepts  invented for political gain only a few hundred years ago- it means nothing.

Errr no its not. We have a population gap and soon the whole pensions sector will collapse if we don't have more workers- we need immigrants to fill this gap, because there aren't enough in the country already.

actually everybody loves brazilians afterglow, everywhere I´ve been in the world (I´ve traveled quite a lot) we are the nationality ppl like the most :D , germans, italians, french, north americans, africans, asians. Part becasue of soccer, part because of the way we are such a warm type of crowd here in brazil, part because of the women, lots of reasons. I would even tell you  that by saying "I´m brazilian" is like having the password to be embraced by anyone abroad, seriously!
When you say you´re brazilian people imediatly treat you better, I´ve never felt anything prejuditial. Honestly, this thread at first was funny, now it´s stupid. Don´t complicate things for yourself murilo.

and I´m agaisn the soap opera you mentioned because they promote rodeos which is pure animal cruelty, so I´m extremely against that stupid soap ,murilo!

Rosie and Anderson aren't saying exactly the same thing. Anderson deals with a defintion of nationalism that arose after the theory of divine right started to nosedive and the whole concept of a ruling heirarchy came into doubt. Yada yada yada... you've read the book. I don't need to elaborate. That is not the same as cultural identity (or "heritage"), which Anderson cites several examples that predates the emergence of his nationalism. Before people thought of themselves as a nation (in the modern sense of the word), they thought of themselves as a people, sharing a common language, common customs, etc etc. Examples of such beliefs are abundant from antiquity (the Assyrians) to the modern day (Native American tribes).
