Title: A little iPod help...
Post by: Dancernl on August 02, 2004, 07:32:52 pm
so my iPod finally came in today and yay I was really excited. I went to download iTunes because the one I got didn't come with anything. Surprise, iTunes will only download to computers running Windows 2000 or XP. What do I have? Windows Millenium Edition. So can I actually put songs on my iPod? NO!  I was on the phone with customer support and the guy was really nice about it when he told me unless I have 2000 or XP I was basically screwed.  I need to weigh my options now.  Do I spend more money and upgrade my comp to XP, or should I try and find out if there's anything else I can do with what I have?  Any suggestions?

You can upgrade to XP pretty cheap if you get the OEM package.

Get with the program, mon. You'll love XP if you've been using ME and it's only $84.00 (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=37-116-112&DEPA=6).

LMFAO. she doesn't want a mac. and i will tell you why. because for the past years we've had to put up with our crappy little '98 imac (or '97? i can't remember. but it was one of those years) that does nothing but freeze and is just all kinds of bad.

and tricia - that's the one she had before :-P hehe

i say, keep the rca, give me the ipod ;-)

My Ipod came with the software for Itunes. i thought all did.
you got ripped off

i don't know what to tell you to do... maybe if someone you know has the software CD for Itunes... get it from them and download  but i guess it's not compatable. i'd get an XP; it's a great comp. believe me, Ipods are awesome and so convieniant and portable and i just love mine to death.

I used the classic Mac OS as my primary operating system from 1993 until January 2001 and I never had any major problems with it. It was very stable for me. The only crashes I got were from crappy software like Microsoft Office 97 and up. The biggest weakness in the Classic Mac OS was the lack of protected memory and preemptive multitasking. As long as you avoid crap software, those weren't major issues in stability.

This is ignoring, of course, that Mac OS X isn't related to the classic Mac OS at all and they are quite different.

/typing this from an iBook with 10.3.4

thanks everyone.  I'm going to keep it and use my dad's computer to put my Cds on it.  I can put songs on it from any other computer anyway.  I was just frustrated that I can't use it on mine.

You'd have no problems if I had physical access to your computer.

this is true. we have had someone come look at our comp, and it didn't help any. he fixed our printer but after a day it stopped printing completely, even though we had a new ink cartridge in :-P oh well, i'm ordering my new comp hopefully nextweek, so it won't bother me any more, lol

That sucks that you can't do it on your computer. But atleast you can use your dads!
When I got my Ipod, the guy who sold it to me was very helpful! He made sure to ask me if I had XP and stuff so it'd be compatible. And then he sent me an email telling me step by step how to set up my ipod so it'd work the best according to my computer. In my expirience the Apple Store people are extremely helpful!
I love my ipod... it's the best thing ever!  :D I have 2088 songs on it now, but I still have the other over half of my CDs to add.

My cousin is an Apple Store person! Hehe, and they have such a low profit margin that they can only offer you a 10% discount or something. *shakes fist*

Good luck with it!

P.S I told my brother about your problem and he said you could email them bit by bit to his Gmail account and then he'd give you his password for when you got on an XP computer- isn't he sweet!? heheh

thanks rosie, and thank patrick for me.  I have it all figured out though, I'm getting my CD burner fixed so I can put my mp.3 files on it when I'm home, and then before I start grad school i've been planning on getting a new computer anyway instead of a car.  Since I'll end up in a large city I really won't need a car.  And, I've decided to get a mac laptop (not an iBook but the other one).  I have owned a pc for 4 years and i am really dissatisfied with the customer support and tech services.  the HP people have been no help whatsoever and the people I have been calling for help lack customer service skills.  When I was on the phone with the Apple guy about my iPod, I was very impressed with how willing he was to help me, and he didn't charge me for a tech support phone call which usually costs about $50.

Being all young and in school you can probably get yourself an educational account which could give good discounts on some software, not sure quite what you get off hardware though.

yes, but which is better?  iBook or powerbook?  ibooks are definately cheaper but powerbooks have more on it.  Such a conundrum.
