Title: Olympics - Athens 2004
Post by: freshlettuce on August 14, 2004, 03:22:22 pm
Moderators, I swear I looked in the other folders where I imagine something like the Olympics should be mentioned.

Anyway, am I the only one out here who loves it when the Olympics come around?  I always make sure I'm home to watch the opening and closing ceremonies.  I love the pageantry and symbolism of the games.  I love watching the lighting of the caldron.  And I love learning of the existence of teeny, tiny nations in the world because they’ve sent an athlete to the Olympics (i.e. Vanuatu, Nauru, Kiribati, Seychelles, Lesotho, Sao Tome and Principe, Dominica - which is not to be confused with the Dominican Republic)

 ::olympic::

yay, I got to use the olympic smilies  :bday:

and yay for countries that are new to me!

I totally love the Olympics too. I had a little party. Made some pad thai and watched.

I have been watching most of the day today as well. I can't believe our women got beat by China in volleyball. Well it was a good match.

I love gymnastics!! In 96 I spent thousands of dollars to go to Atlanta but out of 8 days of gymanstics I got 0. We ended up with Volleyball and baseball. Which was cool.

I like them too :) It just feels weird to think 4 years have gone by so fast...

If I get the chance to (and manage to find out when they're actually shown on tv!) I'd love to watch horse jumping, swimming and gymnastics the most. Oh and this girl I know (whose surname is the same as mine even though we're not related at all!) is in the Spanish hockey team!! How cool is that? :D Apparently some friends of mine saw her on tv yesterday during the opening ceremony but I missed it  :?

I saw the Swedes entering. Talk about hot. Also . . . I watched a volleyball match between the States and Norway and I was totally going for Norway. The Americans were pissing me off. All cocky and shit.

aah woo! so it's not only Rosie and me! lol
I love the Olympics and I've been watching a bunch of it. Today I watched Brazil kick Australia's butt in men's volleyball lol no I'm kidding it was actually a harder game than I thought it'd be.
Yesterday was cool cuz Brazil crushed the Japanese women's basketball team... 120something - 60 something.
Anywho, Brazil is going pretty bad lol but I don't care... I still like watching it and woo I hope Phelps win everything haha

Aah I loved this thread!

I loved the opening ceremony ... but WT was Bjork on about? You're sweat is salty?
I do believe it was better than sydney.
The only thing is the time difference is KILLING me ...
Day in Europe is middle night in Oz ... I have to watch everything repeated. Never live :-( Unless I stay up til like 12am to 6am!
suck.
But Australia won 2 gold already! :-)

Wow, that's awesome Zena. I would have died to go to gymnastics. women's prelims air tonight. I can't wait . I can't believe we have two women over 20 (Go Mo!!) and two Courtney's. Carly Patterson is pretty awesome too. I still am not sure I agree with the way they built the team but it looks like a great one.

You are behind cause you guys have 4 gold. We only have 1 (Phelps also a WR) so far.

I'm thrilled the US Men's Basketball team lost.  Hah!  They need a reality check.  They're always so damn cocky.

I wanted to slap the snooty woman that commentates the dressage.

Usually I love the dressage .. I feel sorry for the horses though.

Australia ALWAYS wins the Equestraian ... even when the lady had a broken collerbone, we still won ...

But the commentary this year is KILLING me. I can't watch it!

That is all.

Feel free to call me Z though .. that's what the majority call me .. :-)

The lady commentaring on the horses dressage was terrible.
She annoyed me with her snooty aweful accent ... which put me off watching what usually is one of my most fav. sections, and one where Australia usually wins ...

When's the tennis?
You know I haven't seen any of the heart wrenching tear jerking olympic stories yet which makes the olympics so wonderful, and makes them a celebration of humanity!!!
If anyone has, please share!!!

Ohhh Brazil just won a medal! woo hoo It's a bronze one but still cool... In Judo it is and I've never heard of this dude but now I guess he'll be famous here lol

Okay Z...

Well I was watching gymnastics yesterday and their was a girl who dislocated her elbow or something and at 25 she was trying really hard to make it to the Olympics again, she said it was harder since she was older and she scored like a 9.53 and she was kind of sad and I think she did a pretty good job though.

I thought her story was sad.

Other than that...nothing.

The people who talk kind of annoy me its just jibber jabber that goes in one ear and out the other mostly.

I agree, Zena!  Where are the great stories?  I swear Australia was chock full of 'em.

Remember that guy from the African nation who volunteered to compete in a swimming event for his country's Olympic team and learned to swim only 9 months prior to the games in a pond of some kind near his home?  The man did not dive into the water gracefully, and had no kind of recognizable stroke.  He took twice as long to finish as all of the swimmers from the other countries.  As he struggled to finish his laps, the mostly Australian audience at the swimming center got on their feet and cheered him on like he was about to win the gold medal!

::wipes tear from eye::

This athlete's story was brought up again during the American coverage of the Opening Ceremonies.  Bob Costas commented that the swimmer might not be competeing this year in Athens because he was having trouble getting to Greece due to his lost passport photo.  Hearing the man's story again made me teary eyed, and then hearing that he probably wasn't even going to get to swim again made me even more upset.

Women's Gymnastics Team Silver, that's awesome. I thought it was totally cute when Team USA, Romania, and Russia were congratulating each other. It was funny cause you know how those Euros like to kiss each cheek and our girls are all about the hugs. Then the Euros were trying to compensate, haha. I guess you had to see it.

Like I said before I don't dig that whole 3 go 3 count thing but whatever, it makes for even more stressful tv. I could easily go online and see the scores and who won but it just ruins the fun.

That taking Kupets out and putting in Mo (go Mo!) was kinda shady. But I guess she had to save herself for the floor.

I swear to God, Australian must be the single most ... how can i say it ... indescribable bunch of people EVA!!!! LMAO!
We LOVE the UNDERDOG!!! LOVE them!!! We cheer and chant and cheer ... oh forget the winner ...
I remember I was just watching the guy going ...
oh come on man!!! More out of frustration though :?
The next day, he was aaaaaaaaaallllllllll over the paper!!!
he was everywhere!!!
Forget who won!!!
Australian love the underdog, and cheer the loudest for them!!!
Australians love the really "battler" stories ... battler means like yeah the underdog .. someone who really has to try ... we don't care if they win oh NO!!! Just so long as they put their heart into it ... that's the Australian way!!! LOL
And beers afterwards LOL :-)

Also notice how every event was full in Sydney ... even the boring shit ones! :-)
I suppose because everyone's from everywhere ... and you can find any countrys people in Australia, so if australia isn't playing, there's some other country who has people of the same background somewhere in their heritge is :-)
Or because we have nothing better to do LOL

Not in athens!
So many are activities dead, and NO audience ...
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbboooooooooooooooooooooooooo

There is only one "brave" story I can think of ..
A swimmer girl (petria thomas) won TWO OLYMPIC GOLD (so far) after THREE SHOULDER RECONSTRUCTIONS!
That's couragous and full of blah blah ...
but sadly no sob stories ...

Remember in Sydney the american girl gymnast that broke her ankle when she landed after the jumpy apparatus, but didn't clutch until she bowed and did the doby thingy with her arms (you know how the gymnasts do the dooby ... pose, turn pose to show they "stuck" the jump?) then she collapsed from pain ...

Or the lady marathon runner that waited for her friend to run beside her? (Africa which country is ... black green red and borwn colours)

Or the cyclist dude who was "doing it for his grandad who used to wake up and take him to training but died", and then at the start or the sprint, his foot came out of the peddle, and it was all over!

bbbbbbbbbuuuuuuuuuuuuuuttttt
DID YOU WATCH THE FENCING .. (Athens)
omg ... it was so funny!!! The girl was like jumping and dancing and psychoing out!!!

Yeah still no reall action ... no tear jearker ... bbboooo :-(

LET! Yes, the gymnastics is wonderful. SO much power and poise. I'm loving it. The women are so graceful, the men so powerful. I felt so sorry for the Romanias (men) though. Just because they tried so hard ... der it's the olympics I hear you say LOL

Was it the USA or the Japanese that won the mens team after all .. I couldn't stay up to watch anymore of it!!!

OMG ... an even bigger eeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwww LOL ..
you're missing like a million other guys here!
Geoff hugill with the smile, AAAAAAALLLLL of our AFL football guys,
uummm like every sun bleached surfer dude at the beach with their sun soaked skin that glistens as they come out of the water ... and blonde hair bleached naturally in the the sun that they flick (in slow motion of course) as they come out of their wave with their surfboard underone arm ... *sigh* ...

more?

tally update ...
Medal Tally   Gold Silver Bronze

 China 10 6 2
United States 6 7 6
Australia 6 3 5
Japan 6 2 1
Ukraine 3 1 1
Russia 2 5 5
Italy 2 3 2
France 2 2 4
Greece 2 0 1
Romania 2 0 1
Turkey 2 0 1

I don't know exactly why Australia is sssooo good at sports ... maybe pay way too much attention!!!

FYI ... Australia has a population of 20 million (we reached 20 million this June actually)
America 250 million
China > 1 billion ..
we're doing ok I think :-)

I think also this is PRE the fact AUstralia just won ANOTHER GOLD IN WOMANS DRESSAGE!!!
And a BRONZE in archery ... believe it or not I was jumping off my seat for the archery ... sad I know, but OMG those guys have nerves of steel!!! It wa like neck and neck. Italian guy won :-( bbboo it was a shoot off sudden death in the end  ...

Spain and Australia is playing water polo now .. Spain is winning 4 - 2 ...
They have about 2 minutes left .. unless Australia pulls off a crazy unbelieveable miricle like in Sydney ... I don't think so though. :-(

Brazil just lost to Germany in womens VollyB .. Hey jules are those girls like twins? or do they just look similar in sun glasses?

The time thing is killing me again .. it's 2am :-(

Paul is one lucky dude that the other men had errors too and opened the door. It was awesome how he could shake it off and do two great routines. It was cute that he didn't even know that he won gold. That was a touchy one for me. I was so tired and needed to go to bed early but I fought looking it up online and stayed up and watched, it was so exciting!!

I know what you mean about his voice, haha.

Courtney Kupets and Carly Patterson going for it tonight, woooo, can't wait. I hope they can keep it together and be consistant. I guess we'll see.

I am so glad that I didn't look at this thread, I wanted to watch it play out. I think I am gonna cry!!!!!!!

Yay for her trying to sing. I mean if I was up there (Lord knows I can't sing) but I would be singing that anthem so loud. I have watched so many Americans barely mouth the words or even try. I am sure there are hella emotions going on but still. Zena your boy Thorpe, he was a true patriot, he was all about signing proud when he won.

an "aaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwww" story.
the Polish swimmer (I have no idea what her name is though Oligya I think) was set to win THREE GOLD medals.
In the first race, she came bronze.
In the second race (against Australias Petria Thomas) she got silver
In the third race she finally got gold (second was Australia's Petria). She cried and cried. She was so happy .. all the pressure finally paid off. After all the hard work, this was her just rewards.
(wait there's more) I was so annoyed Australia was second, but then, the story is that she's going to auction off her gold medal to raise money for childrens leukemia research.

Sarah Ulmer (left) completes a victory
lap with friend and rival Katie Mactier.

Quote
ATHENS - Like her riding style, the symmetry was pure perfection. Sarah Ulmer, goddess of the individual pursuit, reigned supreme in the home of the Gods on a sleek black bike christened Zeus.

Ulmer completed her golden treble at the Olympic Velodrome in devastating fashion here today, sweeping to victory with ruthless, robotic efficiency.

The Commonwealth, then world, and now Olympic champion pulverised her opposition, twice rewriting the record books as she inherited the pursuit crown from retiring Dutch legend Leontien Zijlaard-Van Moorsel.

Australian Katie Mactier, a great mate from their road racing days in the States, was her final victim, just as she was at the world championships in Melbourne three months ago.

Twice runner-up at the world level, Mactier feared she would again have to settle for second best, despite significantly improving her personal best since riding on her home track across the road from the MCG.

"It's deja vue," Mactier said with an air of resignation after Ulmer won gold in a world record time of 3min 24.537sec.

Mactier, a pursuiting novice who turned to the track two years ago, feared what was in store when she rubbed out Ulmer's world mark (3min 30.604sec) yesterday.

Her time of 3min 29.945sec lasted just five minutes.

"I thought I better put my hand up and celebrate it because I would have been surprised if Sarah had not gone out there and equalled or bettered it," Mactier said of her brief term as world and Olympic record holder.

Composing herself track-side ahead of her qualifying ride, Ulmer saw 'WR' flash up on the screen but did not panic.

"It was actually quite exciting," Ulmer revealed.

"I was a little bit surprised. I knew the track was fast and that confirmed it.

"I thought it's time for me to do something similar."

Inevitably Ulmer rose to the challenge, erasing Mactier's name with a stunning 3min 26.4000sec for the 3000m endurance test.

She backed up less than an hour later in 33degC heat with a 3min 27.444sec first round effort to demolish the faint claims of Russian road race bronze medallist Olga Slyusareva -- and steam into today's gold medal showdown.

Gymnast Khorkina Says 'Judges Robbed Me'

By Gennady Fyodorov

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's Svetlana Khorkina, who was second to American Carly Patterson in the women's all-round gymnastics competition, has accused the judges of robbing her of the gold medal and said "everything was decided in advance."

"I'm just furious," Khorkina, who had been favorite for the coveted title, was quoted as saying in the daily Izvestia. "I knew well in advance, even before I stepped on the stage for my first event, that I was going to lose."

"Everything was decided in advance. I had no illusions about this when the judges gave me 9.462 for the vault after conferring with one another at length.

"I practically did everything right, still they just set me up and fleeced me," she said in the interview published on Saturday.

Asked why she felt she was marked down by the judges, Khorkina said: "You better ask them. I think it's because I'm from Russia, not from America!"

When Khorkina won her silver medal on Thursday, she showed no outward signs of disappointment and said: "I think it's the best day of my life."

The Russian was also favorite for the all-round title four years ago in Sydney, where her hopes were dashed after she crashed to her knees from the vault. It was later discovered the horse had been set five centimeters too short.

She said she was hoping Sydney's experience would cause the judges to be more sympathetic to her plight in Athens -- her third and last Olympics.

Khorkina did not think Patterson was a deserving winner.

Asked if the American was a worthy opponent, she said: "I've seen a much tougher opposition than her. Let's see how long she can remain on top. Can she keep going and compete in two more Olympics like myself."

"No, well, you better write that Patterson is a great champion and she has a great future," she added sarcastically.

Khorkina confirmed that Athens were her last Olympics but she wants to remain in the sport.

"I'd like to work for the International Gymnastics Federation. These competitions have shown the sport needs a lot of changes," she said. "It should be judged primarily on grace, elegance and beauty rather than simply on mechanic tumbling."

On Sunday the Russian will compete in her last event -- the uneven bars, where she is hoping to become the first gymnast in history to win three consecutive Olympic titles on the same apparatus.

So Svetlana didn't even medal on the uneven bars, which are her specialty, because she messed up on a skill and came off the bar.  The skill is even named after her 'cause she invented it!  Can we say karma?

OMG, the Women's 20km Race Walk is live on TV!

Has anyone ever seen this sport before?  I saw a race once in Central Park.  It really mystifies me.  I wanna laugh, but can't.  These women are so in shape - it's crazy.  How on earth do you get your stomach to look like that from walking?

The commentator just said that race walkers walk like 4 hours a day to train for these races.  I guess that answers my question.

How do you become a faster walker anyway?  ::scratches head::

I can't knock the sport though, 'cause Spain got a Silver in the Men's 20km Race Walk, so Nerea's got to be thrilled.

The music choices made by the NBC production staff are hilarious.  Whenever they go into and come out of commercials they have been playing music "relating" to the race walking!  I've already heard Walk This Way and that other song that goes "Ain't nothing gonna break my stride.  Ain't nothing gonna slow me down.  Oh no.  I got to keep on movin...'"

Oh my goodness, yay for Greece! :bday:

I watched the competition and have been an avid gymnastics fan for a long time (and I had up until theis point a lot of respect for Khorkina) and if anything, the judges scored her a it too high on some of the events.  She had a lot of form breaks... oh well, she's a sore loser and she should put her head into the game and not her close-up....forgive my venting...this just really frustrates me b/c there used to be a lot of anti-american judging in gymn and to accuse the judges of bias is just ludicrous, they have made a lot reforms in how the sport is judged...I could go on but I'll get off my soapbox...relunctantly ..

Heh, I am glad she didn't win anything... I am sorry, but I was really hoping for her to fall or something so Anna Pavlova would win a medal.  I don't know why, but I felt sorry for her sitting in bronze medal position twice and the first time getting pushed down to fourth and just missing a medal.  Damn, it must stink to be fourth.  I am happy she got a bronze though, good for her.

I watched the competition and have been an avid gymnastics fan for a long time (and I had up until theis point a lot of respect for Khorkina) and if anything, the judges scored her a it too high on some of the events.  She had a lot of form breaks... oh well, she's a sore loser and she should put her head into the game and not her close-up....forgive my venting...this just really frustrates me b/c there used to be a lot of anti-american judging in gymn and to accuse the judges of bias is just ludicrous, they have made a lot reforms in how the sport is judged...I could go on but I'll get off my soapbox...relunctantly ..

lol it's ok, i agree with everything you say!

When Khorkina won her silver medal on Thursday, she showed no outward signs of disappointment and said: "I think it's the best day of my life."

Well she sure did play it off at the time. In 00 you could totally see she was pissed about the silver team. That was sad that she messed up on Unevens. I really wanted her to get the gold for the third time. I think that she was underscored on floor in the All-Around comp. and a few other times. But what she said was rude, she should know that gymnastics is subjective.

I haven't caught any tv today yet (Prime-time Olympics come on shortly). So I don't know if it was resolved. But the whole Paul Hamm controversy. I think he should totally share the gold or give his up. Whether they caught the mistake too late or not, techincally he didn't win. You know that if it was the other way around the US would be spitting fire.

Yay for Humphrey, Hatch and Kupets medaling yesterday.

Oh and May and Walsh are kick ass. So is Logan Tom in reg. volleyball.

I should really sleep but that was too exciting for me.

At last, the Spanish anthem was heard in Athens, all thanks to this guy
(http://www.canoe.ca/2000GamesGymnasticsImages/deferr_sep25-ap.jpg)
Gervasio Deferr (talk about weird names!). I missed it though. I know I would have cried, I get so patriotic with that sort of stuff *sigh*

I watched the men's diving yesterday and the only Spanish participant (Javier Illana) was out of the semi-final by one. lol. Just our luck. Being the good Spaniards that we are, we'll probably blame it on the weather, the heat, the water being too cold, the swimming suit being too tight or something like that...

I heard somewhere that even if the score was corrected, he still wouldn't have been 1st, because the judges also missed one of his mess ups... that he did four holds or something, and you are only allowed three, so it would have been a penalty?  I have no idea what I am talking about.

May and Walsh freakin' rock!! I was crackin' up when Matt and Katie were interviewing them talking about how they high five after every point win or lose and how there is a lot of butt slappin' going on as well. May was all pointing at Walsh. She said she couldn't help it. Poor May had serious red marks on her hips all the time.

Can I just say that the US Women's Soccer Team totally made me proud when they got their medals. They sang it how I was talking about. After the ceremony Bob said they would be in studio but that they would not be singing.

LOL OMG they do that here too!!! THey find stupid songs that relate to the incident or sport or situation :-) LOL
So far they keep playing "just push it" by salt and pepper ... for the mens sprint cycling ... they really have to push hard at the begginning ... it's too funny :-)
Then they show them winning and getting the gold :-)

Quote from: "freshlettuce"
Oh my goodness, yay for Greece!

Tell me about it!
These games are the best for Australia ... 17 gold!!!
Rowing cycling diving swimming athletics so many sports!!
Australia has dropped to 4th in the medel tally, but shit, 20 million people ... so much potential ...
Mind you it's not like I contribute or antyhing ... the only thing I have in common with them is I live in the same country LOL :-)

PLEASE EXPLAIN ... !!!!
damn this is the worst coverage of the olympics EVER! All they show are the events Australia is in! We never see anything else. Not a single other event. It's crap. We only saw the mens gymnastics up until the Aussie crashed out (literally crashed :-()
And Nemov is so CUTE!!! Sexi Alexi!!!

Tha'ts why the olympics are so brillant ... so many times I literally choke back tears ..
when Grant Hacket won the 1500 meters swiming, he was crying and I was crying, and it's not good to cry at 4am in the morning ... LOL ... I cried when the moroccan won ... he kissed his kids and couldn't stop crying .. nor could I :-) I <3 the olympics ... :-)

aaaww :-) Damn australian broadcast ... *shakes fists*

You know something else? In the triathlon, the girl that won gold for I forget which Euro country Sweden Switzerland whatever, she's only been triathelon-ing for 8 years, and she WAS Australian, but the Australian team rejected her ... so she moved countries. And she won under THAT countries nationality ... she's now since showed them who's boss :-) good on her (BTW, Australia did win silver in the Triathelon, but could have been gold silver!)

We won another gold in men's hockey ... ha!
Let you would have proud ... EVERY MAN was singing the anthem ...

Deferr ... is a babe!

such good sports you are ... :-P

I was so annoyed with the USA women beating the Aussie women ... damn it we were leading for all 3 and a half quarters ... damn it ...

Aussies silver in the 4 x 400 m relay! Those men can RUN!!!!!

It's so so sssssssssssssssoooooooooooooooo sad to see the games over. *sniff* ...
I always get so depressed when they finish. I don't know whether to watch the closing ceremony or not ... :-( It always makes me so sad ...
It has been a good games. I realy loved the fact that I had to stay up til the wee hours of the night to watch them live ... it made me feel like yeah I made an effort ... *sigh* I hate when things end.

HIGHLIGHT:
Grant Hackett winning gold and crying and pointing to his heart when he finished. He thought he was spent he said ... he said he gave everything in the heats and was doubting himself ... but he said that he wanted it so much, and the last 500 meters was just heart. ... aawww

The aussie bike lady winning the bike event ... the german looked over her right shoulder, because the whole way the aussie was sitting on the germans right ... and then the german looked over her right shoulder, and the aussie overtook her on the left ...

Diving... so many men, in so little clothes.

The Morroccan winning and not being able to believe it ... did you see him ... he was like TO OMG TWO and holding up his fingers ... TWO!!! He was eccstatic ... and then on he podium, he couldn't stop crying .. unashamedly, unabashed .. just tears of joy ...

Also the Greek lady winning the 400m hurdles ... (yeah yeah Jana Pittman ... Australian WHATEVER!!!) I was happy to see the Greek win because the WHOLE country just more or less exepected it ...  I was so happy she delivered on the day, and got the monkey off her back, and was able to function under all that pressure!!!

Iraq managing to get into the quarter finals only to be defeated by Italy then they swapped shirts ... aawww again ...

Still ... no humanity stories ... (or none that I know of ....)
It was all very sterile I think and "proper" ...

EDIT: damn spelling mistakes.

My most memorable moments of the 2004 Olympics would have to be when Jane Saville won bronze for walking and also when Jana Pittman came first in the first semi final of the hurdles.

Jane was close to winning gold at the Sydney Olympics  but was desqualified in the 20km walk and she only had 400m to go.
It devistated her so it was really good to see her take home the bronze and her being so proud of her achievement.

Jana Pittman injured her knee about 3 weeks ago and was told she wouldnt have any chance of running in the Olympics.
So she had an opperation and about maybe 5 days before she was going to run the Drs said that she had a 60% chance of running.
She rested and then started to work on everything, she made it to the 1st semi final- came 1st, second semi final- come 2nd (I think) and on the big race she came 5th but what an achievement.
She rocks so much, a great Australian.

The Australian woman's swimming team kicked series arse aswell.
And every one of our divers won a medal  8)
