I thought Harmonium was supposed to come out on July 13th and still the single isn't even out...what's going on?

White Houses is or was supposed to come out on July 13. The release date of Harmonium is September 28.

i sent an e-mail to the Music Director at y98 FM in st. louis. they play Vanessa a lot.
i asked Jen (music director) if they had heard anything about white houses. i mentioned in the e-mail that people were thinking it might come out July 13th.
this is Jen's response:

It seems like you know more than I do. I will say this - if her single was going for adds on radio on the 13th, I'd have it by now, and I don't. If the single is shipping the 13th, then I'll have it next week. Check back next Thursday or Friday and I'll let you know if I got it.

I agree. But I just got a response from a generic hit-music station in my area that I e-mailed; I asked:
"Do you have any information as to when Vanessa Carlton's new song "White Houses" will begin playing on the radio?"
And they replied, "Sorry, don't have any information on that."

Record labels push CD's back all the time just because, thus, singles get pushed back too. I've had very bad experiences especially with rap CD's getting pushed back, so I'm biased as it is towards not believing that something is out until I hear it, lol.

Well--I don't want to be a nah sayer...but Patty was signed with A&M...an AMAZING artist...and they kept pushing her stuff back...until they eventually just dropped her... 8O.
But, Nessa seems to have made a video...so I just think that the single will be released the 21st (um...it's in http://forum.nessaholics.com/viewtopic.php?t=6247 this thread...).

Not really, I'm sure we can get a few not well known bands to play for us live. Free promotion. You can't get much better than that. :wink: We just feed, house(tent,) and basically take care of them. I'm sure there are enough starving artists out there to take up the opportunity. :wink:

Remember, the label HAS to time the releases with numerous factors in mind. If they dropped Vanessa's CD in the same week as say... the slim shady LP then Vanessa would get very little store space and all that needs to be factored. Movies being released with soundtracks etc.
And for you who is asking if it is "official"... bite me and read my earlier post.

I THINK they said the album comes out October 22nd? Is that right? I remember the 22nd for some reason, and it falls on a Tuesday in October. That's all I know! E-mail me on the 5th, and I'll let you know if I have it (and I'll play it just for you on the New Music Preview!!!)

You know what White Houses sort of reminds me of, though? "Shasta" by Vienna Teng (she's another piano player singer/songwriter; I think she has a thread somewhere buried on this board)--both songs have pretty upbeat melodies, but then the lyrics are rather contrasted against that...

Sounds like someone was struggling to make lyrics fit the music. Oh well, I think the song will do well and the bridge is only a small part of the song. Let's hope this pushes album sales higher than they were the first time around. It would hella suck if Interscope pulled the same kind of thing Sony did on Mandy Moore due to low sales. At the end of the song, when she says "I'm gone as the day is fading, on white houses," I think it might be her accepting that she is no longer innocent or pure. I dunno, just a thought.

I agree with that. Sometimes just the simple melody says more about where the song is, and what is going on than some hard punched out one. I am sure we will get some of those too... so not to fret :D

Well, this is unrelated to the whole piano thing, but my local radio station was just holding a vote for whose new song to play...they had White Houses, something from 3 Doors Down, and some other random new song...I called in and voted for WH, but it didn't win *SIGH* Yeah so I'm pissed off at them right now, but once they start playing it I'll be happy again. :D

to me, the voice has always been secondary and i like the piano to dominate the song, the voice should still be heard but the music is what makes it for me. thats why i write my songs the way i do. its all in opinion. not one set way.

As for those who complain about the piano part....
One of those things you learn as you get better and better at writing, arranging, and orchestrating is that less is often more. She isn't writing a piano part to be complicated. She is writing it to support the song as a whole. It is her voice and her lyrics that carry the song. Everything else is SECONDARY. This includes the piano.
Why does it matter if a piano part is hard? Sometime simplicity is beautiful. Think The Counting Crows' Colorblind and Richard Marx's Waiting for You. Those are two of the most beautiful songs ever in popular music to use a piano. The piano parts are also accessible to someone who has played for two years. Does that detract from their beauty, just because it isn't difficult?
well for me it's not that it's too easy, but the piano break sounds just like the decending line of ATM but without sixteenth notes. lol

The lyrics are great... They're very descriptive and I can picture what she's singing about easily which is cool.
The piano and melody are very simple... but i think it supports the song perfectly. The lyrics are so complex that the simple piano balances it. I think a complex piano part would be too much.
Her voice is awesome and has definitely matured!

It really sucks. One reason why I loved Vanessa so much was because she wrote her songs on her own. She even made it a point to say in an interview or something that it wasn't her to write with anyother person...that she likes to do it on her own. Something along the lines of that.

Jen Meyers played it on my radio station tonight and she goes "this is y98's music preview. this is a special one tonight. i'm playing this for Amanda who has been e-mailing me the past couple months about when Vanessa's new single is out. the album comes out Oct. 19 and the new single is called White Houses co-writen by her b/f who is about 30 years older than her... but anyways Vanessa even puts on her ballet shoes for the video and starts dancing! K...let me explain this to y'all. You're both sort of correct. Since there is no "official" sheet music for White Houses, one way to get sheets for it would indeed be to convert the mp3 file into an midi file. I'm pretty sure that what 1vcfan is referring to is not creating an midi file from scratch; rather, converting an mp3 to an midi as one would do wav to wma, mp3 to wma, etc. This method does not require the notes, duration, etc. to be known beforehand. Then, after converting to midi, one would feed the midi file through a program that converts midi to sheet music (something able to be done due the way, you're right m125 Boy, midis store information), and out it spits sheet music for the notes played in the midi file.
However, good luck reading it. NoteWorthy Composer is the most readable midi to sheet music converter I've yet used, but it's still a right terror trying to play what it gives you, particularly if you're using a track with all the little editing and mixing bells and whistles that White Houses has. You won't get just sheet music for the piano, you'll get it for the vocals and the violins and anything else that it picks up in the background...and it won't be separated into different staves for you. So my advice, just use Amanda's notes if you want to play it :)
On the "little bunk of love" "little bungalow" issue, amberbeads is right. It sounds like bungalow.

That's all fine and well, except what you describe is nearly impossible. There are no programs out there currently that can do this. I'm somewhat of an expert in harmonic analysis and the mathematics behind it are quite hairy, not to mention quite computationally expensive and not entirely worked out.
You see, it's easy to convert a wav to wma and such. Those formats are just various ways to define a waveform. WAV is pcm, mp3 uses discrete cosine transforms, etc etc. However, MIDI DOES NOT REPRESENT A WAVEFORM. Sure, you can convert a .fin to a .mid. That's because they represent the kind of data. Sure you can go from mp3 to wav. That's because the format is a way of describing the same kind of data. However, midi describes how music is played. mp3 and such describe a specific sound. The latter doesn't care what the composition of the sound is. It's just recording vibrations. The former is devoted entirely to such things.
As of today, the only way you can turn a raw audio recording into a MIDI is by recording a MIDI performance or arranging a version of it in a composition program.
Please have half a clue before chiming in on this stuff.
However, good luck reading it. NoteWorthy Composer is the most readable midi to sheet music converter I've yet used, but it's still a right terror trying to play what it gives you, particularly if you're using a track with all the little editing and mixing bells and whistles that White Houses has.

I think we're probably talking about separate things; or you're thinking reading too much into what I'm talking about :razz: ...there are indeed programs to convert wav files into midi files. Head over to download.com and search for them. However, they certainly don't give accurrate conversions of the original file; many sound hardly like the original thing. So I think what I'm trying to say is yes, you could turn the White Houses song file into an midi, but it wouldn't sound right and turning that midi into sheet music would not give you the true notes for the actual song.
I'm not at all an expert on sound files or what have you, but I do know that I've used programs that convert (though very poorly) from non-midi to midi.

Hmmm i just so get the feeling they're all girls, because the song is kind of about discovering boys- if you see what i mean. The 'pretty eyed boys girls die to trust' kind of implies the boys aren't part of her close group of 'five'.

I think the song is about growing up and being aware of the things that happen. Her whitehouses may be a memory of purity and innnocence though she can never go back to White Houses.

I noticed how they have been selling the DJ editions of the White Houses single on ebay. At first I didn't care, but now I'm kinda frustrated. Shouldn't the people who get the cds (presumably djs) being PLAYING them on the radio instead of trying to profit from them by selling them on ebay!?
I feel like VC and us fans who want to hear the song on the radio are getting ripped off..

i was freaking out! I got really excited and started singing along to the whole thing - the guy at the counter just kinda laughed at me and my friends *tried* to ignore me, but i just kept singing louder and louder - hehe. I think the official "go for radio adds" date was this week. But I still have yet to hear when the single is coming to stores. So far iTunes seems to be the only place to purchase it. I'm hoping a cd single comes out soon.

i called FYE, Samgoody, and only Samgoody has it in their system but none of them had it in stock.

I just checked mtv.com and White houses is back in the top 5 video downloads..It's at #4!

I was driving around with my friends the other day up near SF... and all of a sudden White Houses came on the radio! I was so excited! It's the first time I had heard it on the radio! :D

they play white houses here all the time on a tv station that lists all channels here, which has always music in the background
white houses gets played like once every 3 hours.
however i havent seen the video floating around on both tmf and mtv here so...

Just got an email from Japan: the single for White Houses has been pushed back.
The initial release was Oct 6th 2004, it is now scheduled to be released on Oct 13th 2004.

The song is the same version we already know.
Funny thing though: the disc reads "White Houses - Original Version".

well this radio station her 101.1 the River St. Louis at their site http://wwwwvrv.com has a 'New Artist' section and vanessa is under it and it says they're going to start playing her song September 21 for some reason

Well "papa" will definitely be on the the album, according to Vanessa's Z100 interview. But there's a chance "C'est la vie" might not be on the album sicne I have not heard her confirm that.

Remember how Twilight was on the ATM single? I would expect at least one track from Harmonium to be on the White Houses single, so that's probably Papa, and then I could easily see C'est La Vie being paired with Papa as an extra, if it's not on Harmonium...

Yeah, I don't know of any radio stations editing it. Only mtv seems to be editing it (I guess that when Vh1 plays it they would bleep "blood" too).

yeah my uncle --he lives in Albuquerque in New Mexico-- told me that he had heard it on the radio up there a couple of times before it hit the stations down here, and the first couple of times he heard it they bleeped out only the word blood, but then he started hearing it uncut.

So on amazon uk I read that release date for White Houses is 1/11 and Harmonium 9/11.
But on CDWOW and play.com it's 18/10 for Harmonium and on ebay.com White Houses is going to be available on 15/10.
Who is correct?
Is the UK release date different from the American?

Ok, so I stopped by FYE and Sam Goody today, neither place had the single. The guy at Sam Goody still seeemed to have the impression that Harmonium was coming out in October. Grrr. Anyone have any success?

I just received a reminder like yesterday from Sanity (Australian music store) that says the single is released on Nov 1st there.
I'll let you know when it has shipped.

I have to report that no copies of WH were delivered! The single has been
delayed again and Sanity have no 'release date' for Harmonium on master
lists covering releases as far off as Nov 29! Perhaps before Christmas? :P
