I personally don't like it, because her voice sounds incredibly harsh in it. There are points when she is almost shouting instead of singing. And I also don't find it nearly as interesting as some of the other songs.

i'm just bitter because it's best behavior's uglier cousin.

but i mean that in a way that means that i still think it's okay, i just wouldn't want to date it. best behavior should have been on the album over spring street or this time. and all as well should have been on there too.

Yeah I don't really understand why people would hate on this song either...this song is so beautiful. I would say it summarizes my life, although alot of Vanessa's songs do. I do agree with her voice sounding weird in it though. When I met her back in November, I almost wanted to ask her "You didnt really want This Time on the new CD did you?" She sounds very unhappy and unenthusiastic during the song. Makes me sad.
Anyway amazing song, its more wonderful art from Vanessa.

I liked it when she performed it live, but on the album, it's too slow, but i still like it.

p.s. Are we ever gonna get a studio version of Best Behavior?

I think its always going to be one of those tracks (given the difference in
the vocals particularly between the album and live versions) that is going
to be better live. Its like no-one is expecting V to perform Streets live lol

There's nothing terribly memorable about it, and it just doesn't have that Vanessa flair that makes us fall in love with a song. And I agree, I would have rather had either Best Behavior or (especially) All is Well.
Title: ha, i guess
Post by: iamcoffee on March 18, 2008, 04:24:44 pm
I like all of her songs no matter how she sings them, its really the way she wrote her words and how much those words at that moment meant to her. Honestly, I didn't like anything from her third album... It was just so different from Harmonium and Be Not Nobody (and I feel harmonium is her best.) But, if you listen to all of her songs you get a glimpse of how she was feeling and how she was living her life. Its sad but This time is a good song. I like it.

well i don't know it took some time getting use to it. I don't know it all sounded forced except for Nolita Fairytale and maybe thats why it was her first single on that album?

I like them now, but if you think about it all her words are so simple and full of her ex. Thats mostly what it's about. I'm not against it I just thought she would be different than that. But I guess there are times that you have to let it out before it consumes you.

I like the lyrics in the verses, and I've come to have an appreciation for the song after playing it through on the piano.

i just think it represents exactly what is going on in her life.. she's just like any other songwriter - she writes what she's feeling. i don't think it sounded forced, because this is clearly what she's feeling. i mean, fools like me? my best? the one (even though it was written while they were still dating).. they have THIS IS ABOUT STEPHAN JENKINS written all over them. because they dated for like, 5 years? or something like that, and he was a huge part of her life.

to each their own opinion.. just trying to explain mine. :)
Title: well hold on there
Post by: iamcoffee on March 19, 2008, 04:09:35 pm
I didn't exactly say that I didn't like her emo side... and i mean that in the nicest way possible. I love vanessa, and her words are awesome. I was just pointing out that she was just like everyone else even though I held her so high at one point. Even I have to admit that my little make-up songs are girly and about that one person... I just felt that she could also get passed it too. I also pointed out that she was writing to get it out of her at the moment. Writing songs and such.

just putting in my own words in there too...

I dunno. I'd pick This Time over Best Behaviour. I don't know why,but i don't really like Best Behaviour...it just doesn't sound like.....Vanessa. All is Well is a good song, though.

I used to really love This Time, but for some reason, by the time the album dropped, I started really disliking the song.

I guess cos the album version is slower? Or maybe I kicked it in favour of the "newer" songs, Come Undone (love it!) and More Than This.

Eh. *shrugs* [/end input]

I don't like This Time just like The One. These songs are so girly. I used to like all V's songs thoise two are the first ones I don't like. I like the way The One is arranged because somehow it gives away the spirit of BNN or Harmonium a little bit.

Maybe she felt an obligation to put it on the album since maybe Linda Perry went out of her way to help her produce the song... same with the One.. I personally don't like it with Stevie Nicks' voice in it, but she felt she had to since SN helped a lot and they went on tour together .

That makes sense.
But it also kinda sucks :(

I disliked Stevie's voice on The One as well. I was all excited when I heard Stevie was going to sing on the album (cos I love her so) but The One was a major disappointment. SIGH.

I don't "hate" this time, I like this song, but I admit that I prefer the original version! The new one is too slow like the one.
I like the voice of Stevie: it doesn't bother me even if sometimes it sounds bizarre: she has a very special and deep, low voice

Yes, i agree, SN's voice is "different" but i think it gives the song i nice touch....and it's only ONE song on the album with her in it...so its okay

What are you guys talking about?!
hahaha The One?! It's like..an amazing song. And Stevie Nicks just adds to the vocals seamlessly I think.
I don't know how to explain it, but I REALLY don't think she put This Time and The One because she felt bad about the producers going through all that trouble.
Like...this songs go with the story she was trying to tell.
I don't know how to explain it, but it's gorgeous and to have such an amazing artist as Stevie Nicks..it's such an honor.
And This Time...it's just one of those songs that you can listen to when you're just in that mood.
haha sorry.

Okay, quick poll. Of the people who actually like the song "This Time", how many of you also find favor in poppier, top 40 genre music. And of those of you who dislike "This Time", how many of you don't enjoy mainstream music and search for something more meaningful?

I promise there's a point to this, just answer and you'll see.

I think people are hatin' on This Time because they are the people who are more into Vanessa's deeper side, and all the music she wrote on her own was definitely deep. Now that Linda Perry is in the picture (who, by the way, writes for many pop artists like Pink, Christina Aguilera, and the like), the song  loses some of it's depth to Linda's commercial style.

That's just what I think, though.

'Everybody burns, when it starts to hurt, I cry'.

Meee too. It's so inspirational to me, and the lyrics just are me. I listened to this song so much when I was down about something. Especially when I was feeling regretful of a mistake or something I did to embarrass myself... This song really makes me think about life and stuff... How, in almost eighteen years of living, I've had the great misfortune of having the kind of life experiences of a thirty-year-old. =\ Yeah, I dunno.

I don't like This Time just like The One. These songs are so girly.

I don't know if you haven't noticed, but Vanessa songs are definitely effeminate. They all are "girly." Maybe you're just one of those macho-straight-guys that think that girly songs listened to by a man is gay, which I don't think is necessarily true... But if it is, you need to open your mind. Ghisy is straight as a lightning rod and still loves his girly music. Haha
