Yes, I'm sure we've all foolishly mistaken a lyric in one of Vanessa's songs before actually looking it up and feeling really stupid afterwards. Here are some of mine:
White Houses:
Little bungalow with some strange new friends
Pretty Baby:
Can you hold me and never let go / When you touch me is it me that you want
She Floats:
God knows secrets though I'm told
I'm sure there are a lot more; I suck at listening to lyrics. :P What about the rest of you guys?
-
well i used to sing : sneak into his cars cracked leather seat. for white houses...but i guess its black leather seat...
-
In Ordinary Day, the line "Time will not flee". I always thought it was "Time will not freeze"
-
well i used to sing : sneak into his cars cracked leather seat. for white houses...but i guess its black leather seat...
It's "cracked". I just looked at the album art.
-
well, some of the lyrics on nessaholics.com are still incorrect.
for example, the correct line in She Floats is "Got no secrets, though I'm told..."

When my brother first heard White Houses he thought Vanessa was saying, "WHITE POWER!" instead of "White Houses."
lol

lol
LMAO! omg wow that would stir up much controversy, AND definitely get the ban from mtv. hahahhaa
-
When I first heard 'San Francisco', I thought she said "I always like Steinbeck and those old men wrestling" :?
-
in white houses i thought she said this little bugger...something. i never figured it out til i listened the 10th time or so
-
I always thought the line in Who's to Say was "Do your trick, turn on the stars of Jupiter" and that always struck me as wtf. Plus I always heard the line "We need to grow / well speed's the key" as "We need to grow to speak the key". I just assumed they were "abstract".
Also, I always heard the line in Private Radio as "On a whim I'll leave this town", but every lyrics site out there said "If I don't win I'll leave this town", and that sounded stupid to me. And then I checked the liner notes and saw that I had been right the entire time. Woo.

-
in context, what does it mean? Did Steinbeck write a book about an old man whistling? Or is it a completly random side note?
-
All I know about Steinbeck is he wrote a book called "Of Mice and Men".
-
All I know about Steinbeck is he wrote a book called "Of Mice and Men".
agh I hated that book...anywho..yeah I have medded up lyrics oh jeeze I am the worst with Fall out Bot lyrics!! I look them up and as I read im just like....I sang the complete and utter oposite of that..not even close.
-

-
someone thought NOLITA fairytale was DON'T NEED A fairytale.
-
I first heard "Home" on the video at the WNBA thing, and when i heard "And some I have known
Have a ship where they sleep"
i thought she said "have a sh*t where they sleep" hahaha.

I'm confused about the statement, but assuming you mean these are the misheard versions of yours, I reply
For White Houses, you are correct on that lyric.
For Pretty Baby, I believe it is "Why can't you hold me and never let go / When you touch me is it me that you own"... Not sure on that one.
For She Floats, I always thought it was "God knows secrets though I'm told" as well, but I checked the lyrics (I own the CD) and it says "Got no secrets though I'm told"[/b]
-
someone thought NOLITA fairytale was DON'T NEED A fairytale.
haha. that's awesome.
My lyrical mistake can be seen in my avatar. *points* ...yeeeah.

LMAO

I always thought the line in Who's to Say was "Do your trick, turn on the stars of Jupiter" and that always struck me as wtf.
Wait, I don't get that line either. Is it "Do your trick / Turn on the stars / Jupiter shines so bright / When you're around"? Because for some reason it never clicked that way in my mind. I guess it's because the word Jupiter is so separated from the rest of the words.
-
White Houses
"This little bunk alone with some strange new friends."
Annie
"A day out from the county, I see you."
^^I guess I heard it right, but I didn't comprehend it.
Half a Week Before Winter
"I'm a child of the pleasure, Daddy brings before he runs."
^^I seriously thought this whole song was about her dad because of this lyric haha. When she says, "He sits behind a desk of mahogany," I was imaging her father sitting behind a desk.
That's all I can think of for right now.
Well, this isn't a Vanessa song, but I think it's hilarious.
Fallout Boy's song Sugar We're Going Down
Instead of, "Drop a heart, break a name," my friend was CONVINCED it said, "Trabajar, break a nail."
HAHAHAHA. Because trabajar means work in spanish... and she thought people break nails when they work. It just made complete sense to her.

haha, I totally thought that, too. Right up until I actually looked at the lyric booklet last year.

Annie
"A day out from the county, I see you."
^^I guess I heard it right, but I didn't comprehend it.
If you mean 'not comprehending' as not understanding in the proper way, as in Vanessa actually meant "I.C.U" like 'Intensive Care Unit', then yes, that's what it is. "I.C.U."

Haha, yea I know now that it's I.C.U.
That's what I meant by not comprehending. For a long time, I just thought she said, "I see you," not I.C.U.

Heh, yeah I used to think that too. Hmm...what lyrical mistake did I make? There's a lot on Twilight.
Twilight
Actual Lyric: "I was stained with a role"
What I heard: "I was stained with a roll
Actual Lyric: "I will never cease to fly, if held down"
What I heard: "I will never cease to fly, I fell down"
Actual Lyric: "Couldn't see beyond my own place"
What I heard: "Couldn't see beyond my own blaze"
Yeah... lots of 'em.

I totally thought the same thing. I never even thought it was wrong until you mentioned it. Are the actual words "that he"? I mean, sometimes the booklets are wrong.
-

yea, it's "that he."
-
MY mom thought the line in nolita fairytale was suck on my toes on the foot of my bed, it was funny i was like wtf no its i've got my toes on my pup at the foot of my bed.
-
i also thought in annie it was a day out from the county i see you, not ICU as in intensive care unit ...... lol

yes the acctual lyrics from what i understand are THAT HE brings before he runs
-
someone thought NOLITA fairytale was DON'T NEED A fairytale.
I actually like that better than Nolita, lol. Like she doesn't have to dream about having the perfect label anymore because *in a whimsical voice* it has finally come truuuuuue.

I had never picked that up until I was talking to her father and he was explaining the story. I always thought it I see you until he mentioned that she had been in the ICU and I was like, hey...is that what she meant, and he was like....yeah krystina... Haha just a little tidbit i thought i'd share

Rinse:
Missheard Lyrics: "And as the depth of oceans slowly become shadow..."
Actual Lyrics: "And as the depth of oceans slowly become shallow..."
More than this:
Missheard Lyrics: "you of the sea under the sky, you looking glass"
Actual Lyrics: "you of the sea under the sky, blue looking glass"
Here I was like: Wtf?! What does she mean?!
-
White Houses
"This little bunk alone with some strange new friends."

Yes, it is.
Misheard lyrics are so funny sometimes!!
-
Haha I Thought Ruby's in the afternoon was Grupies in the afternoon i was like wtf that cant be it..
-
"Take away my record deal, the one I don't need."
instead of,
"Take away my record deal, go on I don't need it."
small mistake... haha.
-
I actually thought it was "movies in the afternoon", which isn't very bad, considering it actually might have been movies in the afternoon, and she changed it to "ruby's".
-

I thought it was "movies in the afternoon" too. haha
-
I thought it was movies too, the way she says it sounds like a cross of rubys and movies ya know.
-
When my brother first heard White Houses he thought Vanessa was saying, "WHITE POWER!" instead of "White Houses."
lol
For some reason, I read "WHITE POWDER" which is almost as potentially controversial.
Sorry.
-
i remember when it was the summer before harmonium came out and we got the clips of the making of harmonium. i watched the dance rehersal one and i thought some of the lines from white houses were:
...feel so far where i could fall faster..
...and the modest five of us...
...it's a life and it's nice not to be so alone but i hold onto secrets....
...wrote my injuries all in the dust, don't forget all your hopes and dreams in white houses now....
this is the link, and to this day it still sounds like it

in hands on me i thought she said
"at first i knew about the video exchange"
like she was trying to say she found out about someone cheating on her lmao
-
what does "first saw you at the video exchange" mean anyway?
-
what does "first saw you at the video exchange" mean anyway?
It means she first saw him at the video exchange (a place where you can go to exchange videos).
-
oh, i've never heard of a video exchange before.
interesting...
-
^yeah. i have always interpreted a video exchange as like a blockbuster or hollywood video or something.
-
in hands on me, i thought it was "the summer radiates with heat", but really it's the "subway radiates with heat"... also in hands on me when she says "cargo across the sea", i thought she was saying "to go across the sea" but saying "to go" in the craziest way. when i played that song on the piano, i'd try to make "to go" sound like "cargo" and found it IMPOSSIBLE.
in fools like me... i thought it was "pools like me"... :roflmao:
-
I thought it was movies too, the way she says it sounds like a cross of rubys and movies ya know.
That combination could be "roofies in the afternoon" lmao

omg i thought it was summer radiates with heat too!! how weird!! hahaha. mostly because she sang about summer a lot in harmonium, too. haha. i mean, "the summer radiates with heat" does make sense.

yeah me and my sister were blasting it in the car and i said the summer raidates and she said the subway and we fought about it... so i said, ok summer is hott... "it's a fine day, the subway radiates with heat let's go touch it!" hahaha you had to be there

I think it did used to be 'summer' and 'to go', but she changed the words when she put it on the CD. Like "ordinary days" and "ordinary day" she changed the words.

To be honest, the very first time I heard "White Houses", I thought it was "Wait, How's This?"
-
For White Houses, instead of: "Beer through the nose on an inside joke"
i thought it was:
"feels like someone knows an inside joke"
for a Thousand miles instead of: "i, i drown in your memory"
i thought it was:
"i, i i'm done with your memories"
and for Sway: "precious ladies, love you, love me..."
i thought it was:
"precious gravy, love you, love me..." and i was like, what the heck?!
-
i thought in ATM instead of i, i drown in your memory
it was i, i dont want your memories
-
I started to mess around with the sheet music for More Than This today and my mother started singing her own version over the piano....
"Bagels and scones...."
-

I literally LOL'd when I read that, haha.

"Bagels and scones...."
I'd love to hear the full version of that
This thread is hilarious!
-
In The One I always thought it said "The songs plague me more than I can say"
But it actually says "The songs they play mean more than I can say"
mine's not that funny.
haha
-
I thought it was Hands on Knee
-
i remember first listening to Nolita Fairytale with my friend in the car and we both swear we heard "boobies in the afternoon".....
yeah, that was interesting lol....

i heard, "down the hall, there goes a past," instead of "down the hall echoes a past."

OMG! ME TOO! :D :D
AND EVEN THOUGH I KNOW THE REAL WORDS NOW...I STILL CANT HELP BUT SING IT "DOWN THE HALL THERE GOES A PAST..." lol :p
-
I started to mess around with the sheet music for More Than This today and my mother started singing her own version over the piano....
"Bagels and scones...."
k i was bored...so i made up some lyrics :P LOL
(hopefully u dont mind i 'stole' ur idea... or ur mom's idea LOL)
bagles and scones
but-ter on toast
as we sip on our tea
basking in the sun
the guests have arrived
and we're having fun
we'll never need more than this!
-
I thought it was Hands on Knee
This is almost four years back, but I still laughed. This thread is funny. ;D
-
wow i've never seen this thread, I mis hear a lot!
-
This isn't as funny, but in "Nolita Fairytale" I used to think it was "movies in the afternooooon." Like, I was CERTAIN.
Oh and "cuz I lose my way searching for state's rights." Again, I was TOTALLY certain that was right. Oooops. Bahaha maybe if Ron Paul sang the song... ;)
-

LOL me too! Maybe she could make a special remix version for Ron Paul's campaign? Lol
-
In Private Radio, is it "Find me out of my pillow" or "I'm finally out of my pillow"?
-

I'm finally out of my pillow ;)
-
Oh I thought she said, "And fly me out of my pillow." I've misheard so many of her lyrics it's insane.
-

Oh my gosh I don't even want to THINK about that hahaha
In Dear California, I thought up until *too* recently that it was "me and my pop and the open road." Like, road trip with your dad... fun?
Oh also in Hear the Bells: "Stone cakes, try to concentrate..." even though I know the real lyrics, I'm still fairly certain that's what she's saying XD
-
when i read this i thought there was a new song called "misheard" and this was a thread asking for the lyrics hahaha. a little heartattack.
