and Twilght as well. I was so impressed with Vanessa tonight! It was my first show and I just can't say enough. It was in total awe. It was the first official successful performance of Private Radio because she said last night was pure disaster! I will post more details tomorrow if anyone wants to hear them. I'm also so excited because I got to meet Vanessa tonight. She was so nice, signed my songbook, and talked to me for a minute.I took a roll of film at the show, hopefully it comes out semi decently lol. Her dress was a maroonish color and it had that lacey stuff underneath to make it poofy and those boots were great. Her voice was flawless. My favorite was Swindler, that rocked out. She was so glad I knew the song later on when I talked to her...She said she didn't expect many to know it. or something like that..anyways. ROCK ON VANESSA!

I shot video of the whole concert, and it turned out pretty darned well if I say so myself.  We watched it in the car on the way back to Memphis.  I am now officially off the deep end into my bout with Nessaholism and I need help.  It was everything I ever hoped it would be!  That, even tho so much seemed to go wrong for me.

First, we left off about a half-hour behind schedule, but we made it up easily since I had a radar detector in my car and we got into a jet stream of traffic that was enjoying travel in the 85-to-95 MPH range.  There were several "oh shit! 8O " moments along the way, however, but we arrived in one piece right on time (about 4:40).

We were all hungry (me, my sister, my cousin, and a longtime friend) so we ate at the Mexican restaurant right next to the Exit/In.  A line had already begun to form before we got our food, so I ate quickly, paid my share, and got outside.  I was so worried that I wasn't going to get a good place inside!

I had my video camera with me, and I spied Vanessa doing a soundcheck on "Private Radio" and later doing a meet-and-greet on her bus.  It was about 6:20 when they finally started letting people in and I picked up my ticket and headed in with my sister.  (The other two were further back, but they found us.)

I found a great spot right up against the stage on my left where I had a very good view of the piano keyboard and an excellent view of the Rhodes that she played "Fuck It", I mean "C'est la Vie" on.  Ari Hest played first, and while I'm not a fan, I think he did a really good job.  The crowd was tame, but they readily showed their appreciation.

Vanessa came out and performed, and it was just wonderful.  Her setlist is posted above, and I'll try to transcribe some of what she said later.  I absolutely loved her transitions from song to song, how she would run through her chromatics and talk about her songs and tell stories, talking while she was playing an extended intro and then having to stop momentarily to use her hands to express herself!  It was so totally live Vanessa, with the valve turned all the way open!

Of course her dirty mouth flew open a few times.  She dropped a GD bomb on VH1, immediately saying she was kidding, and offered her translation of "C'est la Vie" that I'm not going to retype, and called out to solid waste when she flubbed a lyric in "Swindler".

After she finished her performance and disappeared backstage, my sister and I hung around for a while till we heard that if we wanted autographs we needed to go wait by the bus out front.  So I waited out there with a few others for about 20 to 30 minutes in 40-something-degree weather till she got changed and whatever else and came to the door and signed stuff for all of us, inlcluding my 'Be not Nobody' cassette that I've had for over two years.  "I didn't know they made these!" she said to me, and I explained how we got it from Poland because I didn't have a CD player at the time.  "Well, hurray for Polish people!"  She smiled and signed it "Peace, VaCrlt" in a silver marker.  (Picture to come soon.)

We walked across the street to the car, and as we pulled off I beepity-beeped at the bus and we made a loop through downtown to see a couple of sights and take some pictures and we hit I-40 for Memphis.  We just got here about 40 minutes ago, and I'm dead-ass tired.  I hope to be able to extract the audio as soon as I get a replacement computer at home, and also the video I will make nice and neat and fit it onto an 80-minute VCD that I'll be glad to make a copy for anyone who wants one for only the cost of the envelope, postage, and disc.  Stay tuned!

It was the first official successful performance of Private Radio because she said last night was pure disaster!

I wouldn't classify it as a disaster... if she hadn't stopped the song herself I bet most folks in the audience wouldn't even have known of the error.

But the funny part was she said two curses and then stopped the song dead in her tracks to get it fixed, then backtracked and played it again.

While on the one hand hearing the song perfect is nice, I actually prefer seeing such mistakes on stage because it individualized the show for me and her comments and reactions were funny.

Glad all of you enjoyed the Nashville show.  Since its only 4 hours away, I was seriously tempted to drive up and listen to her again.  ;)

You know I'm going to want one. Gotta capture my first Nessa show video forever. That concert blew me away. I had no idea....she's just, well amazing. Totally. I'm an even bigger fan than I was before, if that's possible..and meeting her, brief as it was, was something I'll always remember.

She was awesome. Her concert was so great. She made a wise choice in Exit/In. There was one person between me and the stage. It was so cool. She said that to her, C'est La Vie meant f*ck it and this guy who would talk to her through an earpiece said "Seven Year Olds". It was easily the best concert I've ever been to. She seemed so comfortable and was having a good time which always makes a show better. She's SO funny! She was talking about how White Houses was censored by MTV and VH1 and she said "They can show ass, but they can't talk about it. I blame the censorship on Janet Jackson's left breast." It was awesome! She's so pretty. I wanted to stay around longer in case she came out and signed autographs. Does anyone know if she did?

Yes she did! About 20 or so people stuck around and her tour guy said he would bring her back out to sign if we stuck around 20 minutes, well we stuck around 40 and she came out and was so nice. You could tell she was exhausted, hey who wouldn't be after putting on a show like that. I loved how the audience was so appreciatve of the music and didn't talk, you could really tell that meant a lot to her. I have high hopes she'll be back to Nashville.
Title: The Video...
Post by: zurielshimon on March 13, 2005, 10:04:40 am
As soon as I get a new computer in here, I'll start editing post-production on the video.  There's really not a lot of editing I want to do, except to stick in some clips from the tuning of her piano, her on her bus from before the show (shot thru the windshield) and of her testing "Private Radio" before the show (thru the front window of the show - gotta see - she is so cute!).  The show itself I'm not going to edit as it was recorded non-stop from when she sat down till when she walked off stage the last time.  I'll have to fit this all into about 80 minutes so I can send it out on VCD 2.0 to everyone who wants one. 8)

Well those were her words, not mine lol. I was tempted to drive to B'ham the next day but I didn't since she didn't go on until 10. Yeah she did mess up during Swindler and it was funny..SHe's really, really funny, I wasn't expecting that....Just an awesome show.

It was great meeting you too!  You look so much better than your picture in real life.  (Well, now that I think

about it, so do most people... )  Looking back at the tape, I can tell that it was 50 minutes from the time

she left the stage until she started signing autographs.  That's dedication on our part! 8)
Title: Private Radio
Post by: zurielshimon on March 14, 2005, 08:12:47 am
I know everyone's wondering how this first successful live performance of "Private Radio" (as deemed by Vanessa herself) went off, so I'm offering this transcript from Thursday night's performance:

(Vanessa finishes "Swindler", on which she flubbed some lyrics, openly announcing it to the audience.)

Vanessa:  "I know I'm not supposed to tell you when I do something wrong, but I feel so close to you and we're in Nashville, so I should always tell you.  But actually, um, I'm gonna play a song tonight that, well, I'm gonna play this next, a song that I just played for the first time live yesterday.  And it was slightly a disaster, but in a humorous way because there's this background vocal, um, that comes in - don't be alarmed, though you're gonna hear two of me when I sing this song, but it's not - I'm not lip synching, this is not an, an Ashlee moment.  I, I, it's all real.  This is all genuine."

(The audience laughs and cheers.)

"So, um, I'm gonna, it's, it's part of the song that goes, 'Ba-da dop, ba-da dop, ba-da da-da da-da, Ba-da dop, ba-da dop, ba-da da-da da-da', and when it, when it, if it comes in at the wrong time, well let's hope it's not gonna come at the wrong time because, uh, Mark's gonna do a great job tonight.  I know he will.  Thank you, Mark.  But, um, which, yeah, he usually does anyway, but we had a little problem.

"So when you hear that, when you hear that part, you feel free to do the 'Ba-dop' thing."

Audience:  "Yeah!"

Vanessa:  "Oh, you're so obedient!  Can I tell you to do other things, too?"

Audience:  "YEAH!!!"

Vanessa:  "Just kidding.  There's children here.  Um, okay, so this song is called 'Private Radio', and, um, it's kind of about the, the, it's about insomnia and all the kind of secretive things that you, you do at night, which, you know... Innocent things, not like making bombs or anything like that, it's like...  I don't know why that came to mind.  Okay here it is:"

(She begins to play the intro to "Private Radio", but stops.)

Vanessa:  Now everyone is gonna be thinking that this song is about making bombs in the middle of the night.  That not what what this song is about.  It's about insomnia."

(Vanessa performs "Private Radio".)

(Listen for these new lyrics:
Keeping secrets at midnight
If there ever was a right time
I'd tell you everything on my mind
I'd tell you everything
)

(The audience starts clapping and cheering constantly.)

Vanessa:  "That was a moment because that's the first time we ever did that successfully and let's have a big round of applause for Mark who made it happen."

(Vanessa claps a few times herself.)

Vanessa:  "Thank you!  You have witnessed this successful 'Private Radio' moment!  I've been avoiding that for like a year.  Thank you."

(Vanessa then performs "Morning Sting".)

Someone posted some video of the Nashville performance on LJ and I was listening to "Private Radio" and all of a sudden I'm like "8O new lyrics!!! 8O" lol.

It sounded good though!  :) Those lyrics over that portion of the song is the hotness.

Good news!  I have found my computer and I should have it by next Friday! :D   As soon as it arrives, I'm going to drop everything I'm doing and get to work on that video!  I'll make both a Video CD (2.0) and an Audio CD, divided into tracks.  I'm going to put the entire concert on the disk and, depending on space, I will try to include on the Video CD some of the spy video I shot before and after the show.  I may set up a tree system (sort of like what we used for the demo tape) to get the video distributed, or I may handle all distribution myself.  It depends on demand.  I'll only ask for the cost of the disc, envelope, and postage.  My time and use of my resources are free.  I'll announce the "release" in a separate thread when I have it ready.  Everyone who has never seen Vanessa live is about to find out what they've been missing out on and why they should try to go see her as soon as possible! :D

I am somewhat amused though, as it seems that the person just to your right (or maybe a couple people to your right) was taping with a camera or something too, because they posted a bunch of videos on LJ that were just to the right a bit in vantagepoint. Was security that lax about cameras and whatnot?

There was seriously no security....it's just a small venue, nothing fancy about it....great place for the show though....someone could have set up a tripod in there probably (not that there was room)

Well, I am happy to announce that I have a new computer now, so I'm up and running.  This capture thing is just kinda tricky because I'm working with limited diskspace right now.

EDIT:  If this method is giving you trouble (and you have a broadband connection, please) I'll be more than happy to send it through AIM if you catch me at school during the day or if I happen to be on DSL somewhere else.  At home I only have dialup, so it'll take 3½ hours or more there, so I could maybe do it late at night before I go to bed and you just let it load while I sleep.

I click the link, click "Free" and get this:
"You have requested the file 01_-_Vanessa_Carlton_-_Papa.mp3 (2606061 Bytes). This file has been downloaded 36 times already.
IMPORTANT: Download-accelerators are only supported with a PREMIUM-Account!

You have requested 65535 KB in one hour. If you request a file and get a download-link, your download-counter is increased immediately."

and nothing happens, even after I wait for a while.

...I dont know how this website works or anything, but i did download private radio already this way, and I'd like to get the other songs too, but it doesnt seem to be working anymore.

could you please fix that so i can download them again, please ??  :(

If you can catch me on AIM Monday-Friday between 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Central Time, I'll just transfer them directly to you.  That would be the easiest way to do it in actuality until somebody will host them on HTTP.

Yes, there's a very good chance, as long as you catch me at school.  I'm online right now.

8 a.m. here is like 2 p.m. there.  Plus, just copy my AIM screenname from that link in the AIM button if it won't link you directly.  You have to have your AIM set up to handle the aim:// protocol as default.
