Yeah here in the UK there are many channels that play music videos all day but they're on sky tv (i think americans call it cable?) so not everyone has that. I deffo think they should be played more, MTV is a joke these days.

Well there's still TRL, it is on every afternoon showing the top 10 videos. I think if her video makes it to the number 1 spot on there, that will be HUGE. They usually premier new videos in a side segment of the show, so hopefully they will do that with NF... and hopefully people will vote for it.

I imagine that in the future, radios will have video screens on them like everything else does now, and you won't just listen to radio (unless you want to), but you can actually watch radio. It'll probably bring back the art of the music video as well as the popularity of publishing live performances through video channels.

I've tried it but I don't like the whole interface: it's too invasive to me.
I like Winamp better. Plus I don't have an iPod either (I use a Cowon iAudio X5L that works like a USB drive: I just drag and drop my music on it from an explorer window).

Aww. I don't think it's too downgrade ATM, just to say there is more to me than one song to remember.
Anyway, I really like that video and how it's playful but not totally immature. It's a good balance. I like the little fairytale aspects and especially how they weren't too much! I like the Victor shots (CUTE) and how they didn't show the bottom half of that one see-through dress. But the shots of her in that dress against the brick wall are good- prettiest face shots of the vid imo.
Umm... I also liked the spider! :)
I hope the video + song do well. There really isn't anything like it out at the moment that I can think of, and I hope that is a blessing rather than a curse for it.

A Thousand Miles is a blessing and a curse for Vanessa all at the same time. Naturally she understands that it was the cornerstone for her career, and put her in the spotlight. But she can never escape it. Even now when doing radio promotion for Nolita Fairytale she's still playing A Thousand Miles so people will recognize that it's her. So sure, the song did wonders for her, and she wouldn't be where she is today without it, but she's stuck playing that song for the rest of her goddamn career.
Try to understand how she feels as an artist in regards to that song. It's not a diss against us as fans who came to love her because of that song. She's just trying to move on.
The destruction of the piano and and mimicking of the ATM video in the begining of the song is symbolic of her trying to put ATM behind her. She doesn't want to be known as just the "ATM Girl" anymore. But you all know that already.

Yeah, the whole piano destruction thing is just a way for V to say "Look, I'm not JUST the girl who played that song, I'm much more than you know!" and damn right that she can say that lol. ATM was a great song but V has been called that piano chick and she's just trying to shed that image... :)
Ok, video, Love the little fairytale things, mushrooms, spiders, moving chessboard pieces, wings on some guy (weird)... so unique!!! And I love the little shots of her face dancing with the red dress, she looks so pretty! And Lord Victor, what's not to love, honestly? lol. I love all the various NY people on set, and the last one where they were all eating ice cream was cute. Oh! I really don't think it's a slight against her old label. I understand why you'd make that connection, but that's only because she was on her old label when she first achieved fame with ATM, and the connection stops there. If it was really a slight against her old label it'd make more sense if it involved a scenario from White Houses/Harmonium.

No, it's not exact. She looks way cuter in the original outfit. The top she's wearing is different. And in ATM she wears red sweat bands on both wrists, in NF she's only wearing one.
The expression on her face bothers me when she's getting off the bench for some reason. If I saw a taxi coming at me I don't think I'd have such a dumb looking expression on my face, but whatever. lol It's all good.

Ahh, I love it! Conan was a rerun so I went to my room thinking "There's no way AOL posted the video." and they did! And there's special effects! And production value! And it's good! The black lab is her family's dog, Maggie. Maggie's the one that used to bark everytime Vanessa got a good take on a demo so she'd then have re-record the song, remember? lol

Vanessa looks soo gorgeous not just becuase of the new style and make-up but because she looks happy. She looks like she's enjoying life and her accomplishments. I love how she's like a fan singing to her own song! I hope this tops MTV TRL and show all the "ass video" watchers (haha) what real music is. Or not TRL sucks. That video is amazing, it's one of the most real videos I've seen in awhile. Just compare this to fergie's big girls dont' cry video. Then we'll see who's fake and who's real. That smile is amazing! Reminds me of my sister, so real, and genuine!

the intro confused me as well, for a sec i was like "hey i was tricked this is ATM" but then the drums started and i thought "oooh vanessa is so clever" cus i knew what was about to come! i think its hilarious and will definitely get peoples attention. Theyll think "oh that ATM song is on i liked it" then be like "wait no whats this". Its genious. I dont see it as sticking a finger up at her previous success, just making it crystal clear shes breaking into a new era and take her as she is now.
Loved all the fairtale things! they worked so well in the city surroundings and played on the name of the song. My faves were the unicorn and the chess. WOOOH great vid VC well done!!!

No, it's not the same garage, the garage in NF is part of a shop in NYC, while the garage in A Thousand Miles is part of a house in a suburb. Just watch both videos and you'll see.
They tried to mimick ATM as best they could, and got pretty damn close, but there are differences, the stuff within the garage isn't exactly the same as the stuff in the original garage either. They still did a pretty cool job regardless though.
And as I said before, her outfit in the original is different as well, but she's pretty close in NF even though she's missing a wrist band and is wearing a different top.
I thought it would've been better if the taxi hit the piano while ATM Vanessa was playing it. And then ATM Vanessa would be lying dead on the street and NF Vanessa would walk by, look at the ATM Vanessa, and start singing. lol
But that would've gotten her censored again.

Vanessa is one of the few artist, who can make a video for a fast-paced song (or at least semi-fast-pased) without it looking completely cheesy.

I think it would have been better if atm was playing at the beginning and she jumped out of the way for a few seconds before the crash and the crash kinda interrupted the atm and then NF began at the beginning piano part. but that's the amatuer director in me. The vid was hot. V does need to smile more, she's really beautiful. The only wierd things that got me were the anorexic skinny kid with fairy wings (that was just kinda disturbing) and the mushrooms. But I know it adds to the fairytale effect. Great vid. V looked so much better. I'm happy inside now! lol

The video is just ok to me. I like the fairytale aspects but the quick cuts take away from it all. I felt like I was watching an 80's video with modern scenery. I'm not saying it's bad, just could have been edited more smoothly imo.

ok I'm gonna do a breakdown post for those of us who are confused with the different versions of Nolita Fairytale.
. first, we have the "Pre-Release "demo" version" around 3:18 in length
this is the first full length version of Nolita Fairytale released on the internet. very similar to the actual album version we have now, except the extended drum intro is missing
. second, we have the "Alternate vocal version" around 3:27/3:28 in length
this was originally released on The Inc. Records official website as "Nolita Fairy Tale". This is the first time we heard the extended drum intro to Nolita Fairytale, also, a noticible difference in the vocals, especially around 1:25 into the song, when Vanessa says "take away my record deal" more people seem to like it over the first recording.
. third, we have the official album version, (or at least so far the official Single version) (3:28 in length) originally released on iTunes, (and promo single CDs across the united states) also on Vanessa's official myspace page. This version is used in the music video. basically it's the first version, but with the extended drum intro as in the 2nd version. The vocal track seems to be the same as the first recording (going by the difference in the line "take away my record deal")
I haven't gone too far into investigating this, because it seems hard and complicated, but...

My favorite parts of it was the unicorn because I have a thing for them and seeing her twirling in the street in the red dress. I'd like to see her dance more in the videos.
I think it would have been cool if they would have had Irv run by pointing and screaming "you're da' shit!" while Vanessa was in the street. I enjoyed when he did that at the Roxy.

This must have been a crappy piano, or not even a piano. Just parts made to look like a piano.... The piano looked, when it blew up that it was fake, with out a soundboard, and strings.... almost as if it was filled with loose dry dirt... I am not sure, but it is a guess, I have see a piano explode, and you see a little more snap... IDK, I am not a professional at piano explosions or anything.. Just an idea..

Whatever dude. Maybe you should go find the pieces of it and examine it for authenticity. I saw both of them just like everyone else in the world did. It seemed to be the same exact piano to me. That piano can now be seen in parts, some of it in the grill of a new york city taxi. You should ask the taxi company if it was real or not.
Later the taxi will end up in another video and you will say, "But that is not the same taxi! Look there are no dents!"
Who cares! It was the same piano.

I was so thrilled today when I went to go check the Vanessa Carlton website!!! I hadn't noticed it saying anything about the premiere of the video, and so I had been searching on youtube for it a couple days ago :razz:. So I checked the site, and I saw the little notice, and I went straight to AOL!

I think it's pretty cool to play on the success of ATM and go from there..... i loved the beginning ten seconds of the video, and everything else was total crap except for vanessa's hair makeup and clothing. The video is too alternative and indie in its cinematography, editting, and just overall color tones. The beginning ten seconds was awesome because it looked like a great clean cut mainstream music video with an INTERESTING narrative. Now this video is neither interesting nor contains some kind of narrative, however small it may be. Even ATM had a story --- vanessa's travelling around the city (making her way downtown). It is a small story but at least it was something that was simple enough and easy to grasp for a lot of people. The video had very pleasing colors and a very metropolitan meets classical chic feel-- it was very stylish.... but nolita fairytale is a dissappointment to me... not stylish or interesting. It will be interesting to see how well this will be received later on but I will not be surprised if this ends up being a flop......... again :(

WOW.... finally (My internet had to stop functioning on the morning of the 22nd...right???)... Anyways I love the vid...
I knew right away it wasnt the ATM vid because of the cow on the fridge... The original ATM vid has this black n white cow on the fridge in the garage... this one has a dalmation cut out... :P(Over obsessed...I know)
But the rest of the video is very well done... incorporating the literal meaning of a fairytale... and metaphorically (you can see it in her smile... she has never smiled this much in a music vid before....:P)... its pretty much evident from the vid...!!!

JSBACH- - The dog in the park scene? I like that scene a lot!! I like how it's in sepia tone, too. I think it fits very well! The dog doesn't seem mean or angry to me. I thought of it as a playful dog running toward the camera as it would run after a ball to play fetch. And I really like the shot of it jumping off the guy's back (or whatever it was, I'm trying to remember). . . I think you might just be making the snarling dog connection because it looks like a pit bull . . .
And the video does tell a story, I think. You just have to listen to the song lyrics and then you'll realize that she's trying to show you what her urban Nolita life consists of. She walks Victor around the city alot I'm sure, and probably sees all these things she's seeing in the video on a daily basis- and the CGI fairytale elements are just a neat and visible manifestation of her imagination I'd bet. Plus they are fun to watch!
I don't see why this video would do badly. I like the "first ten seconds" too, but I definitely don't think it's the best part of the video. I was never the biggest fan of the floating piano (that's in no way realistic either, and that whole video looked bumpy to me- they tried to make it look smooth but it was obviously the thing was being pulled along on a trailer). I think it's a very cute and interesting video- most videos these days are cookie cutter or way too weird to even comprehend. I think Vanessa picked a good balance. That's not to say the song will do well. Nobody really cares that much about videos anymore and it will still mostly come down to promotion and radio play, I think!

A lot of people on forums/blogs seem to be loving the video and wishing Vanessa well, suprisingly ... Let's hope she just gets that little extra push from Irv so that she can be as big as she was (even bigger too, hopefully) back in 2002.

So true! I absolutely love this video! Mainly because I never thought I'd see another Vanessa Carlton video again, but also because it just makes you feel SO happy! She is so smiley and the fairytale theme works so well.

It was the same guy who directed "A Thousand Miles". Mark Klasfeld (or something like that).
I think I'm going to become a Mark Klasfeld fan. Does anyone have any info on him? Does he have a myspace account anywhere? What other work has he done? He really does have a great imagination. Even if you don't like the video, with the time between the shooting and the release it is pretty excellent. I was suprized on how soon it came out, I don't know about you.

I don't think it's as big per say, I remember it being a bigger deal and watching it a lot more a few years ago but it's still around.
I gaurantee they'll have a video "premier" on TRL with an interview. And then later on she'll appear for a performance. It'd be awesome if she had a band perform with her too, it'd be bad ass if she had a percussion unit from a Marching Band with her.

He used to be President of A&M records, but he is now President of Geffen Records, which really isn't much of a change, because it's part of the same music group. A&M and Geffen are owned by Universal Music Group which consists of the Interscope-Geffen-A&M labels.
He only made the switch to Geffen in 2006, so he was very much a part of the whole Harmonium fiasco. For someone who revered Vanessa so much in public, he really proved his dedication to her after Harmonium by dropping her. Asshole.

Those YouTube stats are actually pretty spectacular when you think of how many millions of videos there are on there!! What is 'success' these days any way though? It's hard to even know. In the UK, the charts are decided by downloads which would work much more in Vanessa's favour.
Marc Klasfield has directed some absolutely brilliant videos!! He has a very definite style.

Regina Spektor was in their "You Oughta KNow" Artists and she became really popular and then Brandi Carlile, A Fine Frenzy etc. with promoting albums and tours. I'd be very happy if Vanessa does a video premier type of thing on Vh1, maybe a couple of live performances.

Am I the only one who seems to think that the character of the taxi driver in the video must have been drunk? I mean, he swerved all the way over to the left to hit the thing! And that probably explains why Vanessa wasn't running for her life when she got up and abandoned it. Who would've expected the taxi to swerve out of its way like that? I think maybe she pulled it out there just hopeful that someone would hit it. But that leads me to another extraneous thought: Man, her insurance rates are sure gonna go up!
