Title: Last.fm and Vanessa Carlton (new Rabbits on the Run statistics inside!!![pg. 3])
Post by: KULPDOGG on May 02, 2011, 09:39:06 am
What is Last.fm and why should you care?
Please take 1 minute (seriously, there isn't much here) to read what last.fm is:
http://www.last.fm/about

Vanessa Carlton's Last.fm page:
http://www.last.fm/music/Vanessa+Carlton

----
Last.fm has become so huge recently, especially within the last year or 2.
It is integrated with a lot of websites already and more including Xbox 360 video game consoles.
Quite honestly, it's a huge database website perfect for promoting bands and musicians worldwide.
AND IT'S 100% FREE!!!!!!!!!!!

To help us Nessaholics promote Vanessa even more, I highly suggest that if we don't already have a way to scrobble our Vanessa Carlton plays, that we get in gear and do so now!

Today, as of May 2nd, 2011 Vanessa Carlton has 7,327,804 unique scrobbles (song plays) and  577,127 unique listeners scrobbling Vanessa Carlton.

I want these numbers to raise greatly. Especially the number of listeners.

Today (May 2nd, 2011) the statistics for the week of April 24th through April 30th (Last week) of Vanessa's Top 15 scrobbled songs are as followed:
1      A Thousand Miles (3,514 listeners)
2      White Houses (1,123 listeners)
3      Ordinary Day (967 listeners)
4      Nolita Fairytale (424 listeners)
5      Hands On Me (419 listeners)
6      Pretty Baby (416 listeners)
7      Who's To Say (363 listeners)
8      Paint It Black (322 listeners)
9      Twilight (307 listeners)
10      San Francisco (278 listeners)
11      Rinse (260 listeners)
12      Wanted (227 listeners)
13      Sway (216 listeners)
14      Private Radio (212 listeners)
15      Paradise (211 listeners)

and if you wish, you can see the complete list updated weekly here:
http://www.last.fm/music/Vanessa+Carlton/+charts

Honestly, I think these numbers are slightly embarrassingly low  :-[
I want all of our Vanessa Carlton plays to count! Please, help Vanessa out and download the last.fm scrobbler!
It's extremely easy and gets seriously addicting once you do it for a while (especially to compare with all of the other music you listen to)

Simply, the more listeners Vanessa gets on last.fm, the more people who use last.fm will have her music suggested to them, the more people will see of Vanessa on last.fm, and the more people will realize she actually exists and has a new album.

I want for Carousel to be as popular as ...say Ordinary Day... or...maybe even White Houses...
I don't expect it to beat out A Thousand Miles, OBVIOUSLY, but hell, it would be nice, wouldn't it??

We can all do our part.
Carousel releases on May 3rd, 2011 (tomorrow!) If we all scrobble our listens with last.fm, Carousel will gain more popularity and attention. This is what we all want.

You can check the status of Carousel here: http://www.last.fm/music/Vanessa+Carlton/_/Carousel
As of today (May 2nd, 2011 -- the week of April 24th through April 30th (Last week)
Carousel only has 1,127 Scrobbles (plays) and a low, low number of only 32 listeners.

These statistics will get updated next week, which will be after Carousel has been out for a few days.

I implore you all to PLEASE HELP! we just need your scrobbles. downloading the last.fm scrobbler is easy and it works silently and automatically while you listen to music, the only information it collects from you is who you listen to, how many times, and when.
You will need to register for an account (which is completely free and easy).

a few of us here already use last.fm and scrobble Vanessa's songs regularly. I want us all to!

Also as a side note, every artist, album, and song has its own page on last.fm automatically. it's kind of like a wiki site.
I've been on this website for several years now (since 2006 apparently) and I've been very active making sure the Vanessa Carlton page is accurate and whatnot..
but anyway..

every artist page has a system where you can upload images for the artist (you'll see, it's very self explanatory)
that works on a voting system.
the point of the voting system is to move an image up or down through the pages, the main goal being to have the picture you want (or what the general public wants) to be the default image (what gets displayed every time someone listens to a song by that artist on the website) -- this image gets displayed to a lot of places that take information from last.fm (and a lot of websites now do)

Vanessa's images page is here: http://www.last.fm/music/Vanessa+Carlton/+images
My goal is to have the newer promotional pictures for Carousel or Rabbits on the Run be the default (main) image to represent Vanessa Carlton.
...for a while we had it as this one: http://www.last.fm/music/Vanessa+Carlton/+images/51615331  (the heart image from late 2010)
but somehow that pesky Harmonium era image from the Best Of album cover snuck its way to the top... but we can change that with some voting up/down.
The new Rabbits on the Run images are already uploaded, you should be able to find them easily so you can vote for them.

I think it's important to have the new RotR images be the default images because if people see new images, they will know that Vanessa is up to something new, be curious about it, and discover Rabbits on the Run!

Last.fm truly is a very important medium for music promotion.
With a little effort from all of us (we just need numbers! people!) We can seriously help out Vanessa in regards to promoting this new album, which I honestly think is just so very important.  :)

If you decide to help out, let us know!
Here's my last.fm profile page: http://www.last.fm/user/kulpdogg  feel free to add me as a friend also, please join the Vanessa Carlton group: http://www.last.fm/group/Vanessa+Carlton
I want to see these numbers jump up!!! Especially Carousel!!!!

I think that's for the Last.fm radio part of the website.
you can become a 'subscriber'/paying member if you want to get more out of last.fm radio...
but scrobbling from your itunes or where ever (anywhere that isnt last.fm itself) should be completely free and unlimited.

edit:
You need to download the scrobbler.
this is what you're looking for: http://www.last.fm/download

update: Razor & Tie (at least I think it was them) added Carousel to Last.fm
the actual track. so now anyone can hear a 30 second preview of it anytime, and users who listen to Last.fm radio have a chance to hear the full song (if it pops up on whatever radio station they're listening to)

It should be in your iTunes library under the "Music" sidebar (if you're using iTunes on a computer), or already in your music section (if you downloaded straight from an iPod with wifi).

hum, on itunes, on the left sidebar under "STORE" it should appear a "shopping" or something else (mine is in spanish so i dont know). And it should be added automatically to you library. If not. Do a search on your computer or go to you iTunes Music folder, it downloads there.

I'm confused. Did you buy it on iTunes? It shouldn't be under "apps" at all. Which version of iTunes do you have? The song should be under "music." Is it on your hard drive? Do you have a Mac or PC? If PC, go to My Computer, then "C" drive, program files, iTunes, and it should be in the music folder, and you might be able to drag it into iTunes from there. If you can't play it, contact Apple and tell them your problem or ask them for a refund.

Oh, I think you misunderstand.  I have carousel, I am trying to get the last.fm thing to work in Itunes.  Kulp said it was free if you scrobble through there so I was trying to but nothing happens when I click on last fm.

in order to scrobble a song while you're playing it on your computer through itunes or whatever you use to play music, you need to download the last.fm scrobbler. this is not an application, this is for your computer.

^ There are applications for it though. There is an iPod/iPhone and an android one. The app sends the scrobbles to the last.fm servers and updates your account, provided you sign in through the app. It scrobbles the plays you make through which ever supported media player you use on your phone. I use Winamp on my android phone. Though I still use it on the computer software download scrobbler.

Oh, okay. I thought you were talking about the song itself. Last.fm, when you download and install it, should automatically open when you open iTunes (there'll be a colorful icon in the taskbar), provided you downloaded the software and put in your last.fm information (you can download the software from here: http://www.last.fm/download).

Step 1, download the software
Step 2, install and fill out everything, which includes your last.fm account (if you haven't made a last.fm account, you must do so at the last.fm website)
Step 3, make sure you select the iTunes option in installation. When you get it downloaded, make sure your account information is put in by opening Last.fm, going to "Tools", then "Options", then "Account."

Thanks so much! I thought I had done what I needed to do, but I didn't actually download the software I guess, just signed up to the site and was able to listen to things on there.  Thanks for the step by step.  I pride myself in being relatively smart, but sometimes I need those inch by inch instructions!   ::)

apparently the weekly stats are set to update for different days...
not sure yet, but I think it's safe to say the total for Vanessa Carlton in general is every Monday.

Carousel is a few days behind, but when it was last updated, the stats are:
6,128 Scrobbles
571 Listeners (really 661 listeners at least according to the stats below and that's only assuming EVERYONE who has ever listened to Carousel listened to it last week, so the number is possibly even higher. we have to wait for the next update to see)
http://www.last.fm/music/Vanessa+Carlton/_/Carousel

----
now here's how Carousel did within its first week with Last.fm users. (in relation to other VC songs)

------------------------

1      A Thousand Miles 3,531
2      White Houses 1,160
3      Ordinary Day 1,039
4      Carousel 661
5      Hands On Me 456
6      Nolita Fairytale 422
7      Who's To Say 421
8      Pretty Baby 411
9      Twilight 314
10      Paint It Black 296
11      Rinse 269
12      San Francisco 252
13      Heroes & Thieves 242
14      Paradise 231
15      Unsung 225

looking good! Carousel beat out Hands On Me! still pretty far away from Ordinary Day and White Houses, but not bad for its first week.
let's hope it'll rise more and do better for next week's stats  ;D

2      Carousel -- 1,347
3      White Houses -- 1,073
4        London -- 951
5        I Don't Want To Be A Bride -- 948
6        Fairweather Friend -- 943
7        Hear the Bells -- 874
8      Ordinary Day -- 853
8        Dear California -- 853
10        Tall Tales For Spring -- 805
11        Get Good -- 763
12        In the End -- 702
13        The Marching Line -- 700
14      Nolita Fairytale -- 418
14      Hands On Me -- 418

Carousel beat out White Houses!!!!!! woo!
I Don't Want to Be a Bride and London did real well!

of course, it's expected when listening to a new album, that the first few tracks will have a higher play count that the rest.
it happens sometimes that people will listen to only the first few songs.

Also, Carousel has had a lot of TV time recently, so I'm sure that helped out a lot!!
ATM also went up a bit, so at least people are seeing more to Vanessa and getting reminded of who she is and listening to ATM more.
That's good too I guess...

 ;D

I'm excited to see next week's statistics, this is exciting! Hopefully they'll go up...and not down...

You can definitely see that the new album is getting some attention though. Very good!!!

4   White Houses -- 1,051
5   Fairweather Friend -- 1,026

Carousel still kept the #2 spot, and surprisingly, even London surpassed White Houses! wow!
looks like IDWBAB fell a tiny bit though.

The new album is still doing really well as a whole though, I'm slightly surprised =)
YAY!!!!!
looks like in general this chart is better than the last one (meaning generally more listeners, a VERY good thing!!)
