Do any Nessaholics like METAL?
where's Kev222 when we need him??
I dont listen very often, but maybe like once a year I'll listen to some metal.
The rest of the year I listen to what my friend refers to as "old man music"
-
neva
-
I don't see a "no" option... but that would by my pick :D
Amanda
-
I don't see a "no" option... but that would by my pick
There is a "no" option... it says "no way", lol
I like "old-skool metal", old-skool thrash, and some black metal, melodic death metal, neoclassical/shred metal, progressive metal...
-
Frankly, I hate metal.
-
Metal in new forms more or less... I listen to some fairly heavy music but I'm not much of a fan of Screamo... well I like some but not when screaming completely replaces the singing... not for me.
-
I'm from AS I LAY DYING
I'M SO GOTH!!!!!!
-
I liked the book As I Lay Dying...haven't heard the band. lol
-
haha, I'm actually not a huge fan of them... though I do like some Underoath, Scary Kids Scaring Kids etc...
-
So if most Nessaholics don't like metal all too much, what is it about it that people don't like? Keep in mind, there are many, many styles...
-
The screaming for one. And I'm turned off by it's overall image: Slipknot wears those goddamn masks to the GRAMMYS! Dear God, we know how goth you are! Save yourselves some trouble and show us your faces at the most prestigious music award show in the world.
-
That's not what all Metal is like though, I mean, I agree, I don't care for those types of bands like Slipnot... but that's sort of stereotyping all metal, most actually isn't like that from what I know.
-
No I don't..I can't stand Punk, Ska, Metal and VERY VERY LITTLE rock..
-

Thankyou Gina. You're right. It's not all like that. That's like saying that all pop music is like Britney. I like metal, and I don't really like Slipknot. I don't have anything against them, I just don't like them enough to buy a Cd or download their music.
Dear God, we know how goth you are!
I think you are misunderstanding the image... it's not goth.

List of Heavy Metal Genres from Wikipedia.org
A number of overlapping heavy metal genres have developed since the emergence of heavy metal in the late 1960s. Even though metal genres at times are difficult to segregate, they usually show different characteristics in overall structures, instrumental and vocal styles, and tempo.
Sometimes a trait of a genre is common in several more genres however, and metal genres are normally grouped by their combination of these traits.
1 Heavy metal subgenres
1.1 Black metal
1.2 Death metal
1.3 Doom metal
1.4 Folk metal
1.5 Glam metal
1.6 Gothic metal
1.7 Grindcore
1.8 Industrial metal
1.9 Instrumental Metal/Post-Hardcore
1.10 Metalcore
1.11 Neo-classical metal
1.12 Nu metal
1.13 Power metal
1.14 Progressive metal
1.15 Symphonic metal
1.16 Thrash metal
1.17 Speed metal
2 Cross-genre references
2.1 Alternative metal
2.2 Avant garde metal
2.3 Celtic metal
2.4 Christian metal
2.5 Classic metal
2.6 Dark metal
2.7 Epic metal
2.8 Extreme metal
2.9 NWOBHM
2.10 NWOAHM
2.11 Rapcore
2.12 Stoner metal
2.13 Troll metal
2.14 Viking metal
Guess what? They don't all sound like Slipknot. They don't all wear masks.

EXACTLY! I'm glad someone gets it. So many people are so ignorant to the fact that Metal comes in many different forms/sounds/etc. And perhaps, you really do dislike all metal, and that's fine, but it seems like most are very uneducated and misled and do think Metal is all about bands like Slipknot. It's absolutely not, they're just one genre.
-
:D Yay! Someone to agree with me!
Gina, you rock my black, gothic socks!
-
Hun, I can't say anything about not being goth cause I usually dress in black. I'm not stereotyping any genre. I consider myself extremely aware of different cultures and types of music and I wasn't talking about all metal. I was talking about Slipknot, and only Slipknot. They project a generally bad image of themselves and I really don't care for it whatsoever. As far as I can see, Slipknot is trying to put a glaring neon light over the fact that they're a metal band, and that's why I have a problem with Slipknot. Why can't they just dress normally and act normally? (Keep in mind that I'm not criticizing people in general who dress differently and abnormally, because once again, I'm one of those people who dresses like that.) Nearly every metal band dresses the same and it just pisses me off that no person in metal (as far as I've found) can have enough self-confidence to dress in reds and blues and greens and still play metal music. Regardless, I don't find much metal original; about the only artist that I listen to that someone could consider metal would be Marilyn Manson. I like people who speak their minds, not what's in everybody else's minds.
I'm gonna pay the world for everything I just said.
-
RN, that's fair enough. I wasn't trying to offend you or anything. I just wanted to make it clear that there are many subgenres that fall under the umbrella of "Metal".
As for dressing in black, P.O.D is generally put under the "nu metal" label, and they wear whatever colours they want, not just black. Same for Metallica- they have been known to wear other colours. I'm sure there are other examples too.
As for all metal sounding the same, I guess that's subjective, and it may sound the same to you, but there really are big differences between subgenres, and there should be (but aren't always, unfortunately) between the bands that make up those subgenres. That's the same for any major genre though.
-
I respect your opinions RN. Slipknot really isn't my taste, at ALL! Quite frankly they scare me, but to each their own. I'm more into new types of Metal, that may not be "metal" to a lot of people who see metal only as it was quite a few years ago. That metal still exists but now there's so many more subgenres as megan said... I do disagree with you though on the fact that all metal bands dress the same, maybe the metal that you're speaking of when you think of Slipknot or bands like that does dress "goth" but I know plennnty of metal bands who wear color.
-
Also, wearing black doesn't make one "goth"
-
I'm very aware of the black clothes doesn't = goth thing, 'cause like I said before I usually dress in black and I don't consider myself gothic at all. I'm not limiting this to only Metal music; some of the most talented people on Earth are in that genre. Many metal bands wear only black, and there just so happens that there are a lot less who wear colors.
No offense taken, Megan (what should I call you, btw?). A lot of metal sounds the same, and for that matter a lot of pop and rock and jazz and contemporary sounds the same too. I'm one of the people who listens to the more unique parts of those genres, and metal just isn't one that generally interests me; once again I do listen to some metal. Not much, but some. I don't refuse to listen to anything.
I'm sure this has been enlightening for all of us. It's good to know that someone on the Internet can put together a meaningful paragraph. =)
-
A lot of it does sound the same. That is the stuff I don't listen to, because I like music with original elements. For example, I love Metallica, but if another band sounded like them, I probably wouldn't like them a lot because there is already one Metallica, and they are the originals.
-
I agree very much. A lot of metal bands DO sound the same, but as Megan said, those aren't the kinds of metal bands I'm into. And you're right, it is nice to have a friendly debate/discussion about something on here.
-
Yes, certainly. I enjoy discussing our opinions in a respectful manner, without anyone posting anything juvenile like "you're stupid"
:D So thanks guys
-
It's delightful, really. Try saying anything on the Saddle Creek Board (http://saddle-creek.com/webboard). It's horrible. [/url]

:D Many many boards are that way. That's why I only post on... two.

Do any Nessaholics like METAL?
Heavy metal is the perfection of music. The dawn of heavy metal rendered all other guitar based music obsolete. The only purpose of non-metal was to bring about the creation of heavy metal, mere stepping stones. Other genres are now superfluous. Other music is a waste of materials, human resources and time that could be better spent on heavy metal.
Although I dispute that nu-metal (or pseudo-metal as I like to call it) is a heavy metal genre. But I won't go into that rant or you'll never shut me up.
-
So, Vanessa's music is "a waste of materials, human resources and time that could be better spent on heavy metal" ?
-
I could think of plenty of artists on the spot who aren't Metal, play guitar, and far exceed the talents of many Metal artists. Conor Oberst, for one, is an innovative and eclectic guitarist; Roseanne Cash is a brilliant guitarist - not Metal. I really don't see either of them doing any metal in the future...

You are my friend :D
hehe. I do like genres other than metal- I mean, I'm posting on a Vanessa Cartlon board, aren't I?- but I really do feel an affinity for certain types of metal. Lots of people don't get it, but some of it I find, well, comforting. Somehow, it gives me a sense of belonging, like Metallica- I am devoted.
...also, James Hetfield is considered by many to be (arguably) the best rhythm guitarist of all time- not just in the metal genre. As for Kirk Hammett- he is amazing. The solo for One- wow. Also Fade To Black. I can play that one... it's awesome!
Kev222, which bands do you like? I hope you will like my music. It's kinda like metal x classic rock x alternative, with classical influences on the piano here and there. It's dark :)
-

Correct ;)
-
Kev222, which bands do you like?
I like,
Classic Heavy Metal: Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Dio, Primal Fear, Helloween, Iced Earth, UFO.
Thrash metal: Metallica :) (really only the first 4 albums, but they are 4 absolutely classic albums), Anthrax, Exodus, Megadeth
Death metal, Death, Children of Bodom (arguably they aren't death metal), Opeth
Progressive Metal, Dream Theater, Symphony X
Power metal: Dragonforce, Secret Sphere, Kamelot, Sonata Arctica, Gamma Ray
Neo- classical shred metal: Jason becker, Cacophony, Malmsteen
Some new stuff that I can't classify: Shadow's Fall, 3 Inches Of Blood
Basically anything heavy with ripping guitar solos. The more the merrier (like Dragonforce, 16 per song :D). I like operatic vocals too, but I can live with grunts and growls if the music is good enough :).
I hope you will like my music. It's kinda like metal x classic rock x alternative, with classical influences on the piano here and there. It's dark :)
Can I hear it anywhere? (myspace?). Piano makes everything better :)
Stay metal \m/

haven't recorded anything worthy of uploading yet. but I shall. I have a huge recording session lined up for early next yr, and before than I'll record at least 1 song.
Stay metal \m/
I shall.
"....it's how I live my life. I can't take it any other way."
If you know what song that is from, I love you.
-
I don't like Metal. I think the hardest rock type music that I could stand was Def Lepard, Whitesnake, and Twisted sister and that was when I was most of your ages now but I don't think they're considered Metal are they?
-
^... I'd say probably more like "hard rock"... but dude, "I WANNA ROCK!" *air guitars*
-
They were considered Metal in the 80s. Music genres are so polluted now that everything is everything and anything could be anything. Hilary Duff is so alternative.
-
3 Inches Of Blood
Dude! DEADLY SINNERS!!!!
Great track. I nearly saw them live before they were a very big band (pre-advance & vanquish), but we couldn't afford it in the end :(
"....it's how I live my life. I can't take it any other way."

Motorbreath ;-)
(p.s. I cheated and used google :( I'm hopeless with lyrics)
-
I think Leopard are generally considered more metal than the other two. If band likes Motley Crew are considered metal, then Whitesnake and Twisted Sister can be too. I just call it all glam shite ;-) But at least the solos were good.
-
I'm a guitarist and a lot of the stuff I like to play are sweep picked arpeggios and alternate picking, more commonly referred to as, Shred, by guitarists. Therefore, I love Melodic Death Metal such as Children of Bodom or Negrophagist. I don't mind other metal bands though that are more mellow such as Opeth.
My favourite shredding guitarist is Yngwie Malmsteen. He is a heavy metal guitarist, famous for making neoclassical music what it is. Metalheads will know who Yngwie is - "that egotistical bastard". Yes, he is very egotistical but he made the genre what it is. I love how he plays purely classical music on electric guitar using alternate and sweep picking.

Yay! I am going to see Dark Tranquillity Sept. 16th!!!
-
i have trouble saying that i like an entire genre of music (such as metal ) because so many bands get categorised/labeled and i mean, every band is different so it isn't really fair, you know? I might like one band that is classified as metal, but not a whole bunch of other ones :)
i'm horrible at deciding which category a band should fall into, so.. according my itunes, these are "metal" bands i like :) .....
A perfect circle
Deftones
The Mars Volta
System of a Down
Taproot
Tool

i love metal, metallica is my favorite band
-
what would be considered old skool metal? metallica back in the 80s. well my love for them died out during their load and reload phase.
did anyone hear of Metallica & Friends
KSJO FM Radio Station - San Jose, CA - 18.12.1998.. it was put on Bit torrent
but i guess there was no album made of it. its called Metallica - The Golden Unplugged (1997)
-
i love metal, metallica is my favorite band
aw, mine too. I adore them. I'm obsessed. I love all their music, from Kill 'em All to St. Anger, although Reload is my least favourite album. Load is a great album (Until it Sleeps and Bleeding Me are astounding) but stylistically oldskool Metallica is my favourite era of Metallica.
-
I am not a fan of Metal.. but what could be worst than Rap?
but I like Dream Theather 8)
-
I used to love slipknot, like 2 years ago  so i put occasionally.
-
Occasionally...
I have friends who are in a metal band, Sudden Epidemic, so I go and see their shows and I have to admit it, I can get pretty into it sometimes.
-
Being a guitarist, I don't mind metal but I don't really like screaming. The only metal I like is Melodic Death Metal (minus the screaming) such as old Children of Bodom, Dark Tranquility and In Flames. My favourite type of metal is shred (guitarists playing really fast), although shred is a genre in its own right although it can be called metal such as Yngwie J. Malmsteen (one of my primary influences), Dream Theatre (Prog Metal, arguably). I don't mind Prog metal such as Opeth. I can't stand Metallica.
Other metal that I occassionally listen to?
- Necrophagist
- Arch Enemy
-
-
:D Haaaaa!!! Fuck yeeeeahhhh!!! I loooooove metal!!! Every sort of!!

Of course, I grew up on metal. It will always be a part of who I am and the cultural background I grew up in. Neo-Classical Metal is probably one I'm more or less interested in. I'm interested in neo-classical music in general actaully. Progressive or New Wave has never been my favorite for some reason though. :?
-
not forgetting Zakk Wylde - Black Label Society
just dont lose yourself in the music, keep it real

I don't really consider dragonforce metal, just rock.
I love metal, it's soo intense, I just want to, well, I won't say.
I listen to disturbed, killswitch engage, some of dope, stone sour, SLIPKNOT, fear factory, divine heresy, and Through the eyes of the dead.
Metal>All other music genres

Haha, just joking about their long, epic songs. :)
The tab for that song is about 16 pages long, lol

I don't keep up with developments in this genre anough to know where an
act like Def Leppard would be categorised by current standards - suffice to
say no collection of 'classic albums' would be complete without a copy of >
