AIM Virus
« on: November 14, 2003, 07:31:22 pm »
I posted this on the other board as well.  I wanna give you all a heads up.
There is a virus going around that's being passed through instant messenger. If you see a link in your buddies info that says "woaaa...look what i found, click here" and nothing else is in the box, DO NOT CLICK! I fell for it today and it took over my info and I lost my buddy list and away messages. Uninstalling and redownloading AIM will not work. I do not know the fix to this virus, so if anyone does please post and help out people who have the virus. thanks!

I don't know if it'll help getting rid of that virus you have, but you could try to install Avast
( go to this page and pick one )
I had virusses too, and that's what Pete (Logikal X) recommended to me.

Herre's something I've noticed...

Porno bot's on AIM will come read your subprofile..Leading to their screen name being left on the list of people who have viewed your profile, Example: "Supersexysteph45" and then you click their name to IM them and if you read their profile, it looks like they have a subprofile...But it's text that they've linked to their site,  so it could be easy to fake:

Subprofile: Click To Continue

See?

Plus people do that kind of thing on message boards where it looks something like this:

http://www.LinkinPark.com

Ya see, you think your clicking to go to LP's site, but in reality it is NESSAholics forums...

People are sad.

hmmm...... just clicking on a link cannot give you a virus. There has to be something else going on there......

you click on the link...and one of those download boxes pops up. Then it gives you a really hard time saying you need to click the box to see it. It's really hard to unclick out of the box then. But you can click the link if you want to. Just don't click YES on the security box.

you're right, it was spyware.  You just have to click control alt delete and end the task.  It's usually a letter or number followed by .exe, in my case it was B.exe  all fixed now though!

Ah. Makes more sense now.  Yeah, if you click YES to a download box or a permissions box you are asking for trouble unless you know EXACTLY what you are downloading/installing.

Even if I get a non-descript email from a friend that says "haha, this is sooo funny" and has a download on it, I NEVER download it.  Unless it has something in the e-mail that shows me that this e-mail was actually composed by my friend.... it's too easy for a virus to compose and e-mail and send itself out.

Good universal advice when dealing with the internet.

well the rediculous thing is that when i clicked no it wouldn't stop.  I got a box that said "download incomplete, must click yes to cometinue" and there was no x-out button on the top.  It was such a pain.
