Thanks again for all the amazing feedback guys!

your support has actually won the video some dubious youtube honours haha!

Honors for This Video:
#87 - Most Discussed (Today) - Music - United Kingdom
#83 - Most Viewed (Today) - Music - United Kingdom
#41 - Top Favorites (Today) - Music - United Kingdom
#43 - Top Rated (Today) - Music - United Kingdom

This is flattering indeed. We never saw the finished product as a masterpiece and it was quite a bit away from the perfect product i'd envisaged, but im relatively happy with the way it turned out. There are some shots that I hate and others i love. I didn't like the location for the cafe and it would have been nice to have spent more time and money on it, but we had deadlines and a very small budget so we had to do what we could with that.

Thinking about doing This Time or Heroes and Thieves next. We had a pretty good idea for Heroes and Thieves and a fantastic one for More than This. The More than This idea was far too lavish for us to afford though, and trying to do it on no budget would have been impossible.

Hopefully getting a better camera for the next video i make anyway.

I should point out im NOT generally a director. I don't want to direct long term. I think its a fun hobby and I enjoy doing it but can't picture myself in that career and think you need to be more totally gripped and motivated by the creativity of film than I am for the job.

I am usually a producer. But im heading into film marketing and distribution longterm. Hopefully if im on the right salary i can also keep making films in a few years time. But i've got the equipment of my university at my disposal for another two years ish so im going to try and do some more videos while i still can!

Yeah i agree that she was rude here.
It's clear she hates PRing, but coming across as thinking she is better than the system which is essentially used to communicate with fans and potential music lovers is dangerous.

Oh, and P.S did anyone notice the Heroes and Thieves cd in the title image?

Hey guys, thanks for all the positive feedback! So glad you guys enjoy it. Im waiting for the bad response, its gotta be there somewhere!

For me i liked both the scenes you guys mentioned. I had an actress rehearsal before hand and made sure she was aware i wanted her to look down then straight to the camera for the truth.

Anyway, we have our first (very dubious) honour!

why is universal involved? her label is the inc?

The Inc is owned by Universal Motown, owned by Universal Music Record Group

Thanks again for the kind comments! So so glad some of you have enjoyed it. Makes it feel worthwhile.

its obviously not a $100,000 music video, and we had shorter shoots than a usual video would have with much less manpower and equipment, but for a student video for a song like that, im quite happy with it. We could have done a really artistic experiemtnal video for a different song, but im glad i chose vanessa.

yay im glad you like it!

Very short sample? Ew.
Better than nothing, though. I look forward to seeing it.
So you're getting profit from it, then?

No, the law says you can only use a short sample if its non-profit. We aren't getting anything from this video apart from good relationships and pride. You are legally not allowed to sample a song for profit unless you pay royalties to the artist.

Well those people do it in their bedrooms, this is a career path for us, and what would my producer be for violating record label law? A bad producer!

We are going to try and do this the legal way. There is nothing to say we will get a flat-out no, but copyright is important, and i have yet to upload anything other than non-copyright content and images to my youtube account and hope to keep it that way!!

The video is done. It looks very good and even though its not the most aesthetically beautiful work we could have done (my cameramans own video for Sigur Ros is an amazing fishtank based video about two people meeting through a fish-tank, its gorgeous) but the shots do look really nice, and the story is great.

There is a chance we can legally upload a very short sample of the video to youtube. I think the rule is you can use like less than 20 seconds of a song for non-profit legally.

Thanks for the cover feedback guys.
The video edit is going well. Very slow, but its going well. I like it so far, im harshly critical of my own work , so this is a good sign. I wont get cocky, its still a student music video, and I dont want anyone to expect anything more than that if we get the right to show it online.

The difference between my school in the heart of the english lakes and big US film universities is that US universities for film are heavily equipped with industry standard equipment, and students usually get budgets and grants to film their shorts with. We have to pay for it all ourselves, and our equipment is laughable when compared to UCLA and the sort. But we make do.

Of course i so wish we could have all the things UCLA and NYFS have, but thats life i guess.  We had decent photo lighting, but nothing like the big softboxes they get for big budget videos which is why people always look so amazing in film. We had decent cameras, but they werent fantastic or super useful.

I also wish i could have filmed on 16mm. Film stock is very important in making a video change from cheap looking to expensive looking. Its the chemical proccess involved. Unfortunately, 16mm costs thousands of dollars and our budget was like  $250. Vanessas music videos are likely to cost anywhere from  $100,000 to $750,000. I think Hands On Me was probably about $20-55k. It looks very simple, but the director, the lights, the cameras, the studio, the sets, all of the elements needed = expense.
(Look up "World on Fire" by Sarah McLachlan for more on that)

All of this said - Student videos tend to have loads of super dark hard to make out shaky footage. Ours is all nice and smooth and well lit. Our actors were great. The lead wasn't actually an actress but a journalism student, but she was fantastic. Better than many actual actors ive worked with. Most of our locations rocked. The stuff in the theater is beautiful - candles all around a piano and a Victorian looking set behind her.

All in all, its the smoothest, most fun shoot any of us involved had worked on. Everyone had so much fun on set, and we are all very proud with what we've got so far.

You guys pidgeonhole vanessa carlton as some innocent beautiful teenager when infact shes now a young woman who has every right to explore her sexuality and be sexual. One day shes gonna do some video where shes naked or something and there will be an uproar that shes selling out, but I believe everything shes done in relation to sex has been very artistic.

One more potential dvd design

Thanks for all the comments. Might be able to upload without audio, but technically the lyrics are her copyright too, so someone lip syncing them may be a breach as well.
