This summer, I'm hoping to take a piano course at one of the local state colleges, and I wanted to know...
...what's one of the easier Vanessa songs to play? I'm not expecting to learn so quickly that I'll be able to play a VC song right away, but I really want to try at least one. I still have to learn how to read sheet music and everything, so it may take a while
-
twilight
-
thas and red ditty :D
-
Playing songs you know at first can be harmful. You'll learn to rely on your ear and not what you see on the page.
After a year or so after good habits are built, go for it.

Thanks for the tip. :) I imagine I'll start learning with simple songs and then once I can build up my skills, I'll attempt a Vanessa song.

thas and red ditty :D
the fast part for a begginer is not easy, I tried teaching that to my cousin he though it was hard, but twilight was easy
-
Pretty Baby, at all
-
ordinary day
the first song i ever learned on the piano
-
definitelyyyyyy ordinary day
-
Ordinary Day. That's the first Vanessa song I learned.
-
white houses and so for its the only song i know besides half of whos to say. 8)
-
Ordinary day was my first song too :D ... Definetly start with that or twilight... (Vanessa even says twilight is easy)

[your siggy is rather creepy...] :D
anyway, i'll have to disagree with you on that one, b/c i HAVE to be familiar with a song in order to learn it more easily. but someone did say that if you listen to a person's music a lot, when it comes to composing something yourself, you're more likely to PLAY like that person.
but Ordinary Day is gonna be the first song i learn when i get Van's songbook. then i'ma move one to the harder stuff.
but the first song i 'officially' learned is Alicia Keys' 'If I Ain't Got You', and i'm currently learning it. it's not the easiest song to learn, but i have the beggining and ending down pretty good.
but then again, you sometimes have to get accustomed to playing some of the stuff by ear, [like the afformetioned song] b/c the sheet music doesn't always have it like the song is really played, [in terms of what's missing] which is a bittersweet thing, b/c it's frustrating, but gives you the opportunity to put you creativity to good use by putting your riffs in it. :)

I dont play piano, but i can play Twilight.
Very basic.
Good luck!
Vanessa seems to have a lot of "pinky-age" in her songs.
-
Twilight is definately the easiest!! :D

Why? I wuv my Mandi. :)

You're still building bad habits.
You need to read and play what is on the page, not what you can hear in your ear. If you never master this PERFECTLY, you'll just end up like another one of those dime a dozen pianists who can't count rhythm fast enough and can't keep time. The ability to play by ear is indispensable. But not at the expense of good reading skills. Starting off playing by ear simply makes this so much harder. When you do want to go back and get technical prowess, you pretty much have to start from the beginning and unlearn EVERYTHING you taught yourself. Sure, it is easier to learn music this way. That doesn't mean it will give you the best results. It's a crutch.
Artistry is important. But, if you don't have everything else down, you're gonna have a muddled, unattractive, pile of music to deal with. What's worse is that so many people can't even hear how BAD they sound.....

I think the easiest song to learn is Last fall.

Last fall? Is that another one of Vanessa's "demo" tracks?
-
Little Mary?????? cuz i wanna learn it  pweeze!!
-
i personally found wanted to be the easiest.
maybe its just cos its my favorite song ever and i wanted to learn it so badly that i self imposed it on myself to be easy. =-)

wanted was very easy for me too... actually, now that i think about it, it was the first Vanessa song I ever learned...
-
how hard is it to learn piano and how to read sheet music?
-
I personally didn't find it hard to learn piano, but I'd been reading sheets since fifth grade (I played trumpet).
-
hmm...i think it'd prolly take me a good while to learn, but its something that i'd love to try and learn.
-
I think reading sheets is harder than actually playing.... I've been playing mostly by ear since I was about nine but only learning how to read music for a little over a year, and it's still hard for me.

but even to play by ear i'd need to learn the keys (or are they called chords? i'm really not all that musically inclined  )

You need to learn both. I don't know how anyone could mix the two up.

pardon me for not knowing
-
Ordinary Day. It was the first I learned and I got it down quickly. The middle is sort of...icky...but yeah.
-
Afterglow was the first Vanessa song I really learned. It's pretty easy. Actually, I first learned the riff to A Thousand Miles, but that was a long time ago, and it was with Afterglow and White Houses more recently that I actually started playing well.
I learned Ordinary Day recently. I really like to play it, the chords are so inspirational. But yeah, that middle part sucks to me. The way the book does it isn't the way Vanessa does it I don't think. And I do it my own way, and it takes me too long to find the right keys...maybe I should write out the music.
-
When I first bought BE NOT NOBODY songbook, I worked on Ordinary Day.... then I learned a bit of Paradise (can't get past the second choris though...), and I know some of Twilight... but I think I'll have to get my piano teacher to help me with all the ...well I can't tell whether the last two pages or whatever..are in a certain key, or if they're supposed to be sharps...
-
i don't have either of her songbooks, but i did learn part of SWAY, and AFTERGLOW and part of WHITE HOUSES [in B and C Major]. White Houses is the easiest, so far.
-
The key change in twilight is a *bit* icky. Took me, like, 10 minutes to get it down (along with vocals).
-
.. I know pretty much all of them and Ordinary Day is by far the easiest & the first one that I learned. The only tricky part in the middle is all the chords and after that you're all set.
-
twilight
Most definitely.
Took me one play through to learn it by heart.
Plus it's a beautiful song...
-
Ordinary Day
White Houses
-
ordinary day/after glow
-
anything in the key of C is really an easier song to play
-
Twilight is quite simple.
-
I think Twilight is the easiest to learn and play well.
-
definitly!
twilight is the easiest song!
-
Whoever said White Houses... I would definitely beg to differ. The song isn't "difficult" but I wouldn't say it's one of her easiest either. For a beginner who isn't used to corresponding bottom and top hand yet, it might be a little tricky.
-
well, since i own neither one of Vanessa's songbooks, i would say the easiest song that i learned was 'Afterglow'. the song i learned the fastest was 'A Thousand Miles'; i learned it in 2 weeks just last month, b/c i've wanted to play the song for years, but didn't get the chance until recently. now i can't get enough of it! after all, i've heard it a gazillion times ever since Summer of '02.
-
well, the only songs i know from BNN is 'A Thousand Miles' and bits and pieces of 'Wanted' by ear. so far, WANTED has been one of the easiest song to play. at first it was really difficult, b/c i didn't really know how to use the pedal [it requires half-pedaling]; but then it just came to me.
-
I think that Ordinary Day is the easiest because it was the first song that I learned.
-
well, WANTED is also a fun song to play. it's also a song that you would play when you've had a bad day; punch the 'ivories' instead of someone else instead.
-
Ive just learned how to play PAPA. OMG i love that song!!!
its hard at first cause of all of the weird melodys but once you get it, its like second nature
PYHOM i learned recently too. Its really a fun song to play with or without singing along to it
i never even attmpted to play WANTED...i should do that now...
-
SUPERHERO! Seriously, its pretty much the same 5 notes over and over and over again. Its a hidden track though, if thats ok. I posted sheet music for it on the Piano Music thread, on page 64 its on I think.
