I'm getting toward the age where I need to start figuring out what I want to be when I'm older. So I was wondering, if you guys could possibly post what Job you currently have, or what you want to be, etc.
I'm looking more towards the medical field.
I think being an anasteseologist would be fun.
They make alot of money, and it has alot of importance towards surgerys and stuff.
Anyone? :D

You're 14. I wouldn't worry about it yet.
Also, anasthesiology is supposed to be very very stressfull.
-
I want to major in premed and become an infectious disease specialist
-
My grandfather is a retired anesthesiologist. He had six kids and lived in a HUGE house in New York, but yes, he did say the job was very stressful because of the responsability you have and there is no room for error.
I suggest being a starving artist  . That's my future! (I can't wait...)

Ah, yes. But my I'm going into 9th grade (begining of highschool), and down here in Louisiana, each highschool is like a different academy. Like medical, arts, financing, etc.
And I got into the medical academy so that's where I'm going.
We get to take lots of classes and learn about the different medical occupations.

I'm going into a Communications program. I'd like to work in Journalism part-time and teach English. And get published! Help me get published if you're an agent or an author or have connections! Please!!

Been there, done that. I never figured out a major, so I decided to be a starving artist. It's actually working quite well for me. :D Good luck to you! Don't be afraid to take chances. Just make sure they're not DUMB ones.

It is true. I know that schools pressure students to plan their whole lives by the time they finish school, but you may need more time and that's fine. Nothing is definite, and you don't have to commit to one thing for the rest of your life. You're allowed to change your mind. Find out what you're good at, and what you enjoy. I don't think that one should choose a particular career because of the salary.
-

Mmhmm. Especially if you have no interest in that career.
I want to write. Can I be a starving writer?

Honestly, I would take the liberal arts path till you hit college. Then worry about a major.
-
Ah, thanks for all of your opinios and suggestions.
-
you'll always have a job in healthcare or education

i'm an art major! graphic design mainly.
i've also toyed with the idea of double majoring in music.
but i want to graduate in the near future haha so that might not be a good idea.
i work at web design office where i sometimes get to do graphic design (mostly business cards or editing graphics for the web) but i pretty much do everything. right now i'm doing sales. don't get into sales. it's very boring and clients are mean.

I looove working there, I've been working there for 8 months now and wouldn't change...well, until I have to go back to college, heheh
-
i considered going in to geriatrics. I love hanging with old people, but like Jess it just made me so sad...I can't handle being so attached to a person and watching them deteriorate. So I give you all the credit in the world Jen!
You should be a librarian like I'm going to be :-P Reference librarians make the big $$
-
They'll certainly get my money. Reference is always my spot in the library, and the bookstore. 8)
I just don't do fiction too well. :?
-
haha well there's all kinds of librarians....school, public, reference, etc. the grad school program is three years plus more if you want to go on to do something specific, like medical research or law research, etc. I really want to be a public librarian, but I think I might go reference first because they make more money. My dream job would be Rosie's mom's job!

You're a few years too late to be that.

You don't have to be old, distant, and unfashionable!!! Silly, just wear some Gucci loafers or, for a woman, a Versace gown.

Ps- Anthropology is the best major ever.
My bro is an Anthro/Archeology major. Graduating in August. He's doing an internship right now... with a professor at his school in Texas. Going to grad school somewhere in Texas, ohh I forget where. He loves it though.
and jess, you crack me up. I give you lotsa credit, people who go to bingo can be rather fiesty. watch out! hahaha
-
you laugh gina, but it's true! I only had three lap boards and won a game, and everyone around me had anywhere from at least 20-50. The looks of death I got were exponential :-P

One of my friends from Anthro field methods did an ethnography at Oneonta Bingo. It was quite interesting.

I have seriously thought of being a librarian myself, but in most places you need an MLS (masters of Library Science) and I'm not going into grad school anytime soon (if ever). So we'll see.

yeah there's no undergrad for Library Science...I'm doing English Lit. right now for undergrad. I considered doing Education as well so that I could be a school librarian, but I don't want to do education since I have no desire to be a teacher. So, public/reference librarian I shall be.

I feel for anyone who is trying to figure out what to do. The job market changes so quickly! In 4 years for a college, or even 2 for a trade school, the level of demand can be entirely different from what it was when one first chose a school. These days, one sees many people in their 20's and 30's re-training themselves, which bears out my observation.
It's really a lot of work to decide. The only advice I have is to do what you love. A long school day gets replaced by an 8 hour work day, so you'd better dig whatever field you go into.
Way back when, I took a look at the music biz, and saw tons of talented people that went unnoticed. I thought, "There is no f-ing way I can depend on such a full of crap business. I will starve!" I got a day job after college, ha ha! I'm thankful every day that I have a roof over my head.

I'm thinking of majoring in Computer Science with a Minor in English.
-
I love my major. Well dual major. Childhood/Special Ed. With a minor in Spanish. I plan on being a Teacher for children on the autism spectrum. Last summer and this summer... I work as an aide in a classroom for children with autism. Love it!
-
erm .. medical huh?
I tried that .. Med Sc. but didn't wanna do pure research, so I did a Biotech degree too .. now I'm a molecular biologist .. if I had my time again I possibly would have done sthg that paid more money .. :-)
Prostitutes nah don't do that .. exotic dancers get paid HEAPS! :-)
I wonder if i'm exotic enough ;-)
-
oh, you are, z.
I am majoring in something that doesn't pay much. *dances*
PolySci...but I intend on going to law school afterwards or something.
-
I love my major. Well dual major. Childhood/Special Ed. With a minor in Spanish. I plan on being a Teacher in an Autistic classroom. Last summer and this summer... I work as an aide in an Autistic classroom. Love it!
I know someone who teaches special needs students. I don't know how she does it.
Of course, she does more than just Autistic... she actually teaches children with terminal diseases and such too. I couldn't handle that. It would be too emotionally draining.
Edit: Joey - If you want to be a successfull Lawyer, be prepared to work your ass off. I mean, top 5% of yoru class. Because the market is so flooded, you gotta land the good internship ASAP and hold onto that job.
Unless you want to do public defense or something like that. In which case, I have no idea why you'd want to spend 30G in law school to make 40G a year in salary.
-
my dad teaches special needs kids at BOCES...it pays pretty well, but you have to be cautious of some autistic children because they can be extremely strong. Every year my dad gets at least one guy in his class that he has to physically restrain or tackle because the student gets so angry he tries to hurt other students. In that situation, I'm pretty sure I would die :-X
-
I minored in Philosophy, mainly because everyone got to the classes I liked before me and I got locked out. I kept taking them, and before I knew it, voila!
I could always sit around and think about why I didn't have a job.

Yeah, but I want to be a lawyer in order to fulfill a more outlandish goal: politician.
:) Yeah, I'm full of big dreams, but all I can do is try.
-
I am still trying to figure out what I am going to do with my life
-
I'm thinking of becoming a photographer or landscape architect..

Don't tell anyone, but deep down, I keep wanting to run for office of some kind. I've always said that once I'm rich, i'll retire from my job and either teach or go into politics or both.
-
Andrew- yeah that would be incredibly challenging. I've worked with students other than ones with Autism, but nothing like that as of yet.

I work for the good ol' BOCES too! As does my Mom. I work there as an Aide during the summer. I also volunteer for the Special Olympics when I can. Last summer I had a student (for boces) who was just what you described. When he came to the program we knew nothing about his history so we learned as we went along. Aweful. He bit, hit, pulled hair, scratched, you name it. He was extreeeemely physical, and he'd sometimes go after the other students. It was really sad, we had to physically restrain him, which was.... aweful but there wasn't any other way to deal with it at that point. He also is non-verbal and not potty trained. What an experience that was! This summer should be a bit different though.

yeah I give you a TON of credit Gina! I like working with the special ed. children, I always loved going to school with my dad for the day, but I honestly don't think I would be able to deal with kids like that. i mean, the fact that i'm 4'10" doesn't help either, the average autistic child could probably break me in half :-P
