Title: V's new label, Razor & Tie??
Post by: eclv on February 28, 2011, 07:36:09 pm
So Vanessa's Twitter mentioned that ROTR will be released under Razor & Tie. I don't see her listed under their artsts.

She was listed as being on Razor and Tie at the Sunset Sessions performance too, so it appears to be legit. I don't think they've rolled out the promotion for her yet, though.

IAMSOEXCITED!!!

LOL If Warner Brothers doesn't act like the douche bags they always are, that's the month Michelle Branch's CD comes out lol.

“It’s inspiring to be working with such a vibrant talent like Vanessa Carlton,” said Beka Tischker, Razor & Tie’s Vice President of A&R and Music Publishing. “Vanessa’s latest album harkens back to the art of making records that take you on a journey, it’s refreshing and something you don’t hear a lot of today. The music showcases her depth as a composer, sensitivity as a lyricist, and her skills as a pianist. At Razor & Tie we pride ourselves with being a home that nurtures artists to grow and explore so that they can reach their full potential.”

In fact, the whole thing is interesting.

Razor & Tie is excited to announce the signing of singer-songwriter Vanessa Carlton. Her fourth studio album and first for Razor & Tie is set for release on June 21st, 2011. The album, titled Rabbits on the Run, was produced by Steve Osborne (U2, B-52′s, KT Tunstall) and was recorded in the UK at Peter Gabriel’s world-renowned Real World Studios.

Vanessa Carlton’s Rabbits on the Run is a 10-song set of gorgeous, haunting melodies and finely-crafted stories. The album was created in collaboration with Steve Osborne, Patrick Hallahan of My Morning Jacket, Ari Ingber of The Upwelling (all playing on the album), a two-inch tape machine, and a stone house in the English countryside. It was in part inspired by two books: Richard Adams’ Watership Down and Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time. Songs include the 70′s-sun-drenched “Dear California,” the lush “Carousel” and the bold “I Don’t Want to Be a Bride.” Rabbits on the Run is by far the most honest and uncompromised album she has recorded to date, revealing a striking departure and an exciting snapshot in the evolution of Vanessa Carlton.

Carlton explains, “It took me thirteen years to return to the vibe of my first cassette demo and ten years to muster the courage to go it alone and create something that is pure Arts and Crafts. It was written and arranged over two years, and put to tape.” Watch Vanessa discuss the album HERE or at www.vanessacarlton.com

Three Grammy nominations, three studio albums, platinum sales and a collection of hit songs are some notable results of a fruitful career thus far for Vanessa Carlton. She first exploded onto the scene in 2002 with her stunning debut Be Not Nobody, and world-wide hit single”A Thousand Miles.” Vanessa Carlton first began playing the piano as a toddler, continuing on an artistic road with her attendance at the School of American Ballet in New York, a path she would eventually abandon in favor of songwriting. While studying at Columbia University in New York City, Carlton was signed to Interscope Records and has since released three albums featuring songs such as “A Thousand Miles,” “White Houses,” and “Nolita Fairytale.” Carlton’s music has resonated with audiences of all ages world-wide and she continues to inspire an increasingly loyal fan base. Vanessa Carlton is managed by Career Artist Management (CAM).

Vanessa Carlton joins the leading independent label Razor & Tie and the diverse and acclaimed roster that includes such artists as Richard Ashcroft, Nicole Atkins, Angelique Kidjo, Dave Barnes, All That Remains, Norma Jean, Dweezil Zappa, Dar Williams, Chelsea Grin and The Summer Set. The New York City based label is one of the fastest growing independent record companies in the United States, and has garnered both Platinum sales and Grammy awards in its 20 year history.

In the video on her website there's also another coat that looks even more made of animal. I'm kinda shocked. I can't imagine V wearing fur. Wasn't she part of the PETA association? And she carries her dog everywhere.. Animal lover and animal wearer doesn't fit together.

LoL.  I think the key there is that they are stuffy old women, most like rich and most likely hypocrites who don't think about things like that.  I'm sure V would be careful not to offend animal supporters especially because of all that crap with the pitbull incident.  I'm not sure she would intentionally wear fur because then that fact would get people in a huff and distract from the fact that she has recorded a new album and it's release is this summer!

What were the sales for 'Heroes & Thieves' in the US?

Hopefully she'll be with this label for a long time because sale expectations aren't as high on an indie label compared to a major label, and quite frankly I'm getting sick of her jumping from label to label, aha.

She should make money on ROTR. Since she financed it herself, the she gets more "points" for the album and therefore makes more money. The record company has to front the money for distribution, promotion, video, etc., but Vanessa gets songwriting (and producing? did she help produce any of the songs?) money.

I have no idea what the sales were for H&T, but I assume the Inc. gave her an advance, which she then had to earn out before she received royalties from sales. Since she went with an independent label, she and the label should make a lot more money than H&T and the Inc. did. And I doubt Nessa went all out with the budget, since the entire thing was self-financed. It's the same way with Tracy Chapman, who hasn't really had a hit album since 1995 but who still makes records every couple of years with the same record company she started with: the budget for the albums are so low, the label and Tracy automatically earn money, no matter if the CD goes gold or platinum or not. It should be the same way with Nessa. Now, if it were someone like Beyonce or Britney, then yeah, they have to sell a bazillion albums just to pay back the budget and make money.

Um...sorry, I kind of didn't answer your question. ???

They use very expensive equipments, producers, also touring & appearance costs are through the roof. Not to mention the music video budgets and fashion choices would no doubt cost millions.

Heroes & Thieves sold around 540,000 altogether, I believe. And as a reply to Lydia, yes I think this was a great decision for her! Is is just me or did Irv Gotta just seem extremely fake?

540,000 worldwide? Is that figure real? That's a lot more than I expected.

I do think Irv appreciated Vanessa. I think the problem was he didn't know how to promote her. Promoting an artist like Vanessa is very different to promoting the typical artists he's used to promoting (Ashanti, Ja Rule, etc). For what it's worth, they're still friends but business is business and the two parted company ammicably.

Well its good that they're still friends! Maybe he wasn't really 'fake' but Idk. Sometimes he came across as such.

And well, I got that figure from Wikipedia, but as good as that album is, it should have sold millions! But, yeah Wikipedia isnt the most credible source so I cant be for sure.

Razor & Tie has a great reputation as an artist-oriented company.  They have done pretty much everything.  As luck would have it, I've worked with someone who used to be on R&T.  That name supposedly refers to being anti-corporate(having to shave and dress up for a job, get it?).

Hopefully, Vanessa has paid for the album herself and will now lease the master to R&T.  That way, she owns the master and not the record company(yippee!)  She must be doing well if she can record at Real World and use 2" analog tape.   That bucks the trend of recording in someone's basement with a Mac and Pro Tools.  Plus, the price of reels of tape versus hard drives is astounding, around $200+ for around 15 minutes last I checked.  I've worked mostly with PT recently simply because I cannot afford analog!

I know that she has tracked some things onto tape but has done mostly PT.  Analog tape can make drums, bass, and yes acoustic piano sound huge.  In theory, this should sound different than the last 3 albums.  Very excited!

The only thing about R&T is that they are smaller and I'm not sure how they do radio.....or if radio even matters anymore.

Since he and Vanessa are reportedly still friends, I don't think he's fake (she wouldn't keep someone like that in her life?).  With that said, I think he's one of those people that ACT larger than life on camera/in public, ect. because they THINK they are larger than life and try too hard to be such. Seems like he has to be the center of attention, thinks he's the alpha male.. ( I have a brother in law like this...)

From what I hear, Irv is really cool. I guess there's a certain image he has to keep up (what with him being the frontman of a major record label), but behind that image he's pretty decent. I remember when he logged on to the official forums all those years ago, just after news had broke that he signed Vanessa, and he seemed pretty excited and even had a small chat with the fans. There were big plans for that album, and from what my friend told me, Vanessa didn't really seem interested in them. Not saying she wanted the album to be a commercial failure, but I mean ... I think Irv and Vanessa had different ideas of what success would be with that album - he wanted her playing at big award shows, scoring hits on the BB charts, etc, etc and she cared more about the critical acclaim and touring.

I think it's good they both realised their BUSINESS relationship wasn't going to work out but their personal friendship remained intact. You hear stories where artists usually leave their label on bad terms and it's all a big mess.

Exactly. Vanessa knows that the money is in touring, and not in going on random award shows (which, admittedly, can lead to more record sales). Irv wanted a star, the next Joni Mitchell or something, and he saw that in Nessa. I think he's too used to dealing with major labels and striving for the NEXT BIG THING, instead of letting Nessa be the artist she is. (Yes, he did refrain from butting in too much, as he knows we Nessaholics would revolt if he made her Britney.) They two just had different visions for where her career was going to go, and Nessa isn't the type to let people tell her who to be.

Not to mention the millions of people onboard to write one song. All that money has to be divided up between the three--or four, or nine million--songwriters...if there's anything left once the label, producers, and good old Uncle Sam snatch their share.

Well if you remember, there was that two year push Irv was planning for the album and he said to the fans on her board that he had huge plans for her - including a small tour in Europe. In interviews, he imagined her at the Grammy's performing "Home" and stuff. I don't know why Vanessa wasn't enthusiastic, but she's never struck me as someone who cares for all that. I think the most she would like to see is bigger album sales .. and possibly a bigger tour, too.

Yeah I do remember that, wasn't ever sure when it never happened, though. I would have loved to see it! That album is one of my all time favorites and theres no reason it shouldn't have seen a lot of success. I just believe its due to her.
