Completely Off-Topic / Live 8
« on: July 02, 2005, 05:15:34 am »
Sounds pretty cool .. it's nice when there's a united effort.
Just like they did for Tsunami which albeit was a more urgent reason ...
Some good bands ... Mariah Carey meets Madonna meets U2 meets coldplay annie lennox greenday ... a bunch of recent and older acts ...

U2 in London is singing Beautiful Day they changed the worlds to see the orld to include all the venues of the Live 8 and their mission for Africa .. nice ..

You sense that each act feels like they're playing for a greater cause not just to promote their music or to entertain or sthg ... it's nice ...

Of course Australia isn't making too much noise about it becuase we're so far removed from everything and everyone else in the world ... it's not on free to air TV but it's on cable .. and it's good to see the rest of the world making noise!! :-)

:-)
Lame I know.
It a kids show I know.
It's aimed at an audience between 12 and 15 I know ...

But it's so damn funny!!!
It's very cute ... and innocent!
It's about Raven (remember the girl from Mr Cooper, yeah she's the star) who is psychic (sp?) and gets glimpses into the future and her 2 trusty sidekicks ...
it's funny and cute and silly and I think i'm too old to watch it, but i can't help it :-)
Sometimes if I get home late and miss the 6.30pm show, it repeats and I stay up til 1.30am to watch it ... gosh i'm so lame LOL :-)

Does it show in any other country?

Completely Off-Topic / Queen Mary of Australia?!?!?!
« on: May 13, 2004, 09:32:08 pm »
Of all the fairytales, the truth is often the most unbelieveable ...

Well, once upon  time in a place far far away ... also known as the ass end of the world ... there lived an ordinary girl called Mary. There was nothing particualrly special about Mary ... but there was something about this Mary that would intrigue a very handsome stranger.
Juan Antonia Samaranch the then president of the International Olympic Committee uttered the fateful words on some day in 1993 ... "and the winner is Sydney Australia" and the stage was set for ordinary Mary to become the future Queen of Denmark ...
Seven years later ... on a VERY exciting night when all of Australia was hudled around their television waiting for their "son" Ian Thorp aka Thorpido was racing in his beloved 400m event, Mary decided to head over to watch the event at a very ordinary bar ... a bar that I've frequented on >1 ocassion. It was there that Mary caught the attention of a very handsome and very Royal man ... who was there pretending to be low key ... playing it very cool, and pretending to "blend in" as he sipped Australian BEER ... he was also known as the Prince of Denmark ... this last bit of information was unbeknown to Mary, and she began to flirt shamelessly and show much interest in our very handsome stranger ... but being an Aussie woman, she thought that's as far as it was going to go... she'd tease him one night, and not call him again!
Howver, towards the end of night, when the celebrations had ded down and the drunks bounced out of the bar, he took her back to her house, and he professed his undying love for Mary and told her how he could not manage another day without her. How he had fallen in love at first site, and how it would not be worth living if he weren't living for her. (i'm not sure if that really happened, but it did in this story) And the rest as they say is history.

Tonight, Denmark is getting a Queen, and Australia is adopting a King.
And ordinary woman from the ass end of the world has in reality met her prince who swept her off her feet, and she in turn completed his life ...

aaahhh such a romantic story. Almost makes you believe in love ;-)
My friends and I are having a Royal party because we are so sad LOL :-)
I love weddings LOL :-)

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Huge compliment to Vanessa!!!
« on: September 20, 2003, 04:07:26 am »
So I bought Instyle magazine ... September issue ...
There was an article in it about Vanessa Carlton and Michelle Branch ... and their respective inspirations and yeah ... just read damn it! :-) LOL

Title ...
You're the inspiration
For each of the six young musicians on our pages, there's a fellow artist who strikes a chord. Here, they get a chance to sing their idol's praises (and hear a little feedback)

List of ppl
(1)Fan: Shirly Manson (Zena: you know! Lead singer of Garbage???)
Idol: Deborah Harry
(2)Fan: Norah Jones
Idol: Etta james ...
(3)Fan: Michelle Branch
Idol: Stevie nicks
(4)Alison Krauss ... (Zena: who???)
Idol: Dolly Parton ...
(Zena: it's so sad how I know the idol and not the fan ...
sigh ... first sign of aging ... losing touch with the "fan" and being able to sing at least 3 songs from the "idol" :-) LOL
(5)Vanessa Carlton
Idol: Carol King
(6)Fan: Kelly Rowland
Idol:Patti LaBelle

Article ...
The Fan:
Singer songwriter Vanessa Carlton (VC), whose 2002 debut CD BNNB, earned Grammy nominations for both song and record of the year; she is currently recording a follow-up. (Zena: We knew thtat already though so ner :-))

The idol:
Carole King, whose Tapesty sold more than 25 million (Zena: OH MY SHIT!!! 25 million!!! That was obviously before we could get music off the net free ;-)) ) copies and who recently re-released "Love Makes the World" on her own label, Rockingale reconrds.

Carlton on King
"My mother used to listen to Tapestry from beginning to end. The song that struck me was "Natural Woman", and I knew every word. When I sang along to it, I would do this sexy dance. I just felt so empowered. And I was nine! (Zena: how does/did she know it's sexy ... wait a better question is ... how did she know about sexy at that age O_o ...) Carole's music has the power to do that. The thing about her that is so exciting is that she has always gone with her own instincts, and that inspires me the follow mine and create my own path."

King on Carlton
(Zena: This is the compliment bit I was talking about)
"When I was the age of this generation's crop of singer songwriters, I didn't even know that I was a singer-songwriter. I just did what I did. And the fact that it's being carried forward by talented people as Vanessa is very satisfying. Her music is free, it's exciting, and it has a big emotional range. She's not copying something else, she's influienced by many different things and prople, I turn out to be one of them, but she's an original."

so there :-)
That's a big compliment.
I really like Carole King, like Vanessa's mum, my mum has all CK's albums ,including Tapestry which she used to play every single Saturday while doing the housework.

But I've always loved Fleetwood Mac. Yes such is sad I know, but it's something about Stevie Nick's voice. I love their song Seven Wonders.
So heres what Nicks says about Michelle.
(come on ... you know I love Michelle)

The fan:
Singer songwroter Michelle Branch, a grammy winner for her collaboration with Santana. Her 2nd CD Hotel Paper was released in July.
The idol:
Stevie Nicks, whose combined album sales from Fleetwood Mac and solo projects total more than 60 million ... Zena: 8O  8O  8O SSSSSSSHIIITTT!!!) (the groups latest album Say You Will, was released in April)
Branch on Nicks
"I grew up listening to my mom's (Zena ... that's MUM in Australia!!!)Fleetwood mac's records. I remember hearing Stevies voice on Rhiannon for the first time. It just sucks you in. She was my favourite part - in front of the whole band, carrying it with her voice and songs as a female, as a writer, as a musician. I'm from arizona and she's from Arizona, and as i got older, it was kind of like, "Wow, someone actually made it out of Arizona and did this?" I admire her for being strong and living thru' it ...(Zena: Thru' what exactly? What does "it" mean???) She's a rock chick, one of the girls you're always jealous of because sh'es hanging out with the guys ... a living
Nicks on Branch.
"Michelle's got a funky thing going on. I can see she want's to be kind of what I wanted to be like: able to kick butt in order to have ppl take me seriously (Zena: talk about delusions of grandeur.... O_o). I didn't want to be too beautiful (Zena: Good job LMAO! :-) It's not true, but comeone I had to say it :-)). As far as being a music maven goes, I'm still doing this, and I want her to see that the road is unending if you get into your craft and fight for it. It's alot about your attitute - your attitude to not give up.

Good stuff.
Thanks.

Other Musicians / El Canto Del Loco
« on: April 09, 2003, 06:31:53 pm »
Once upon a time a girl called Nerea suggested this really cool song to another girl called Zena ...
Now Zena was only used to listening to songs in a language she understood, however, she was amazed at the ability of this song to bridge the whole language barrier/what the fuck are these ppl talking about thing, and instantly fell in love with the song ... Oh sure she had no idea what the hell they were saying ... but it was the overall mood of the song that she fell in love with!
Infact she loved the song so much, she made poor Nerea write out the words and even translate them for her!!! (Nerea you're such a dear ;-))

So then Zena checked out the bands other songs, and LOVED them!!!
Now Zena says "language barrier ... what language barrier???"
And has now taken to listening to tonnes of songs she doesn't understand (Actually I guess it all started with Snow's song - Informer (remember that??? ;-)) ... (and yeah right as if that's in english ... and even if it is ... don't tell me you actually understand what he's aying ... )

Now you can find Zena rocking out to El Canto Del Loco's songs on the way to uni at home on the way to work ... basically anywhere Zena has a CD player ...

Zena is now in a lovely place ... promoting ECDL for the good of music and wherever possible ... and recommends you first download ...
Puede Ser ...
and Contigo
and Son Suenos
Una Salida
A contracorriente
and Aquellos anos locos

The end.

brought to you by the letter

I made it :)
Introduce myself is it ...
My name is Zena, and i'm a Nessaholic. Have been one for about a year now ... I 'm still not in the least tired of ATM or OD or SH or Wanted and  consider the skip button on my CD player when BnN is playing Ness-phamy (blasphamy Vanessa style)
Other artists i'm "obsessed" with include Michelle Branch and uh  ... yeah other ppl ... :-D I like Irish music ... :-/ (I shouldn't say that say that out allowed should I ...) and Vanessa Mae, Slava Gregoriavian ... (contemporary classical guitarist)

uhh I did a Med. Sc. degree (pre-med) but decided against Medicine (what a bad choice that was) and ended up instead doing Biotech degree ... uuhh all i's got left is a work-experence component so ner ner to all the ppl still having to put up with tests and assignments and reports and stuff :-D (I am also very mature can you tell??? (forgets that she's enrolled in a Programming in Java course ... is scared now that she's remembered :-/)) Oh and if anyone can hook me up with the name of a biotech company so I can haul ass to any other country that'd be just swell :-) LOL

uh I play guitar? play ... I define play as a technique where-by a "noise" is made by the guitar, whether plesent to the ears or otherwise ...

I say uuuh a-lot ...
I have 2 sisters ... one older & one younger ...and I am living proof middle child syndrome exists ... *twitches* so that make 4 women in the family ... *remembers to feel sorry for poor father :-)* I can imagine my neighbours at a particular time of month all sitting around their windows with munching away on their popcorn :)

I'm from Australia ... Which a former prime-minister affectionately called once the "ass end of the world" :-) but it's all about your point of view and perspective really because ... seeing the world is round, I believe Australia is on top ... No I don't have a Kangaroo as a pet, we don't say crickey and G'day mate ... but if I have shattered your illusion of Aussies then I will humour you and edit my post to say I do ...

what else ... if you have read this far ...  I apologise ... I will pay for any psycological trauma suffered ...

quick shout out to Katia and Joe ... guys these boards are freaking AWESOME!!! Not joking ... You've done a FANTASTIC job ... and it's such a pleasure to be back among family. HOLLA! :)
