As most of you know, there are currently two forms of the U.S. dollar in general circulation. They are as follows:
The Sacagawea "golden" dollar, first issued in 2000:
The Washington dollar note, first issued in 1928:
Most countries, such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, no longer have a note for the $1 or £1 denomination as it has been completely replaced by a coin. My question for my fellow NESSAholics is, which do you prefer, and what would you like to see done in the future? (Please indicate in your reply what country you're from.)
-
*cocks shotgun*
Get out and take your Sacagawea dollars with yah!
You got to the count of 3. 1.. 2.." *boom*
[/Moe from The Simpsons]
I'll always prefer the bills.
-
I have no problem with the gold dollar except this: it is not accepted currency in like vending machines or copy machines or anything. Plus, there's not a spot for it in cash registers. We'd need a total retooling before I'd accept that as mass currency.
I like my greenbacks.
-
I vote for Keep the dollar bill, ditch the coin...which seems to not be any of the choices....
Who would want to walk around with a bunch of clunky coins in their pocket!?
I don't...I did it once when a friend of mine got change for a 20 dollar bill from a postage stamp machine...he owed me 8 bucks and he paid me back all in Sacagaweas...
That's just my 100 cents..hehe

Same here. The coin is just really annoying. I dunno, but I am so one of those people that HATES coins. And I've made the mistake of doing things like buying train tickets and metrocards from the machines in nyc with large bills and then recieving change back in all dollar coins. Very annoying.
-
Personally, I don't like dollar bills much because new ones stick together and old ones get raggedy and don't like to stack. The dollar coin doesn't weigh nearly as much as it once did. Before 1979, it was HUGE! (Does anybody remember the Eisenhower dollar?) Also, the dollar coin in its current size and weight has been out for 25 years, so a lot more vending machines accept them than you might realize (not just the ones that have that sticker on the front).
Am I biased? Perhaps. Inexorable? Hardly! I also prefer the metric system, but I haven't jumped full-off into it yet because I'm still surrounded by people who use the American system (I can no longer call it English since they, too, have abolished it). Likewise, I'm not going to stop accepting the dollar bill just because I don't like it. It's money! I like that part of it. But I'm either going to pass it off on my employer's till or trade it in at the bank.
-
THE DOLLAR bill!
-
THE DOLLAR!
huwah? they are both dollars
-
I think gold coins are cool...they have this sort of arcane, ancient feel for me...but a stack of $1 bills is considerably lighter than the same amount in coins...so I'd say stick with the system we have right now, with both, and if people decide they want to change, it will happen without abolishing a particular type of currency.
-
People actually use the gold coin? *laughs* One time at lunch I gave the lady 2 dollars in the coin(my dad likes coins...we collect coins :S) and she looked at me and asked me if that was a chuckE cheese coin...
-
I've always liked the dollar coins better. Not sure why, but that's not important.

A ChuckECheese coin? What an idiot. Lol, at lunch... was this a school lunch lady then?
-
They should make the $2 bill again :(
meh :?
i thought they stopped making the dollar coins? i have few and have been saving them.
it would require a lot of changes to delete the $1 bill and keep the coin.
and as shown by that whole metric system thingy, USA doesnt like change very much :-\
i dont care really.
-
well, there were previous dollar coins that they did stop making, which I heard was because they looked so much like quarters that people kept mistaking them.
Thats why these sacagawea dollars are golden colored, so you wont mistake them with any current coins.
-

They did put them back into production for the 1999 series to replenish the the supply. (Before that, they had not been produced since the 1976 series, when the reverse was redesigned for the Declaration of Independence Bicentennial (as, of course, its author is pictured on the front).) They're still easy to find at most banks, but they don't circulate much.

Yep. The Susan B. Anthony dollar coin was silver and had the reeded edges. Bad, bad mistake! So the new one is copper-colored and smooth on the edge. I guess you could say we learned a lesson from the Canadians. ;)
-
well im Dutch so it doesnt really mather to me.....
But i think the coin is really pretty!!!
-
Coins are just generally more fun. The pound is bloody wicked here- SO nice to hold in your hand. Its the perfect weight! Never mind those silly, easily forged dollars.

I agree!! (never held a pound in my hand but on the coin thing)
on the other hand if you have 5 bills it looks like you have more then when you have 5 coins
Still think the coin is pretty!!
-
I love coins...they have some weight to them so they're not as easy to loose as coins!
-
I like the coins alot. It is nice to have something that is not so easy to damage. Here in Reno when you go to the casinos they have dollar coins for gambling. It is nice to just throw a few dollars in your pocket instead of having to get out your wallet for just a few bucks. If you don't like having a lot of coins in your pocket just exchange for a five.

Are they one pound in weight? :?
-
I've always wondered as to the origin of the term "pound" for money. I know the proper name is "pound sterling". Does this mean that, once upon a time in Merrye Olde Englande, it actually meant that it was a pound of sterling silver?
As for a two-dollar coin, I don't think we should ever try it in the States; our two-dollar bill is too cool! But I love staring at a Canadian toonie. :D Has any of you ever stared at a toonie for about 30 seconds, and then glanced over at a solid white wall? Wicked, eh? 8O
For reference, here are the Canadian "toonie" and "loonie":

And here's the U.S. $2 bill:

Heretic!
Two pound coins are evil. No machines accept them and it's like carrying a brick around in your wallet. What a waste of time. Worst idea sinse the 5 pound coin.

2 pound coins are great Scum! What are you on about? They're a really nice weight too, but alas they don't fit in the palm of your hand so well (well...maybe if i had a bigger hand that wouldn't be the case). I do agree about the vending machine thing though.
Scott, post a picture of the Queen side too! Then i would be super proud. hehe.
P.S Coins are also the best for when you're bored and you can play the 'who had the oldest coin?' game. Genius.

I <3 2 pound coins, but what I love more are 2 euro coins. They're much much cooler cos we have 12 different versions. Fun to collect

On more than one occasion in Italy I or the someone I was with was given discounts for paying in 2 euro coins.
I like the $1 coin though I never use it.
And Rosie, I love the "oldset coin game" too! :D

yeah it was a lunch lady...and it was rather amusing because we had a drink vending machine in the cafe that took the golden dollars and if you wanted your money back gave you the golden dollars back instead of quarters if you had a dollar or something in there. So...that's the intelligence level of the my lunch lady

I'd be interested to see those, actually. San Marino is soooo weird. The city I am in right now has a bigger population than their entire country.

Wow, those really get around, huh? Are they all minted in their respective countries or do they just pass around the design? I just looked through my left over Euros and I have a Germany, Holland, Italy, and France. I only went to Italy (well and the layover France but I didn't buy anything.)

Back when the UK had capital punishment, I thought the proper execution method for commoners convicted of treason was drawing and quartering.

And to think my dad teaches that subject. Scum, you need to read some Horrible Histories! They're the best- i swear my brother knows everything he does thanks to those books.
In my city we have the city walls, and there are gates into the city where they used to hang the heads from. Oh yeah.

Sure, they don't circulate, and that doesn't bother me. We don't really need it. It's not that it's too heavy because it is the exact weight as two quarters or five dimes - they all have the exact same composition - but rather it's too big around! For a vending machine to take them, it would have to have one hella-big slot!
-
dollar coins are too easy to lose (at least for me). give me a dollar bill any day. :)

Hanging, drawing & quartering remained the lawful punishment for High Treason until abolished in 1870. It was not used often as it was considered so barbaric. Governments of the day were concerned about public opinion even in those days. Ordinary hanging (until dead) replaced it, although the Monarch could still order beheading and quartering of the body, but the cutting down of the prisoner whilst still alive and the disembowelling and burning of his organs ceased. It was not until the Forfeiture Act of 1870 that all reference to drawing and quartering was removed from the Statute Book.
So Britain still had capital punishment but not always H.D.Qs

That is so true. I've had some pretty large bills totally disappear because they (probably) fell out of my pocket when I was getting something else. A coin is easily heard and a lot more resistant to wind!
-
There is NOTHING more uncomfortable than a pocket full of freaking coins.........the unnecessary excess weight of it, the excess bulk of it, the annoying rattle it makes when you walk, it's horrible and THAT should be abolished!

I like the note because they're easier to stuff into g-strings. LOL

hardly any casinos have coins coming out anymore. Most machines spit out friggin tickets now.
-
I have noticed that the ticket thing is growing too. I noticed it has even spread to Reno (I was there in Sept.) I first noticed it at the Indian Casinos. Is it in Vegas? I haven't been since last, last August.
Just give me some good ol' coins.

Most of the ones downtown are now and my favorites at MGM are. I don't go to a lot of casinos on the strip aside from MGM now.
