Title: How do you pronounce . . . ? Part 3
Post by: zurielshimon on August 20, 2003, 01:45:01 am
Okay, my turn, and I'm going to make this multiple choice.  All the choices are actual ways I've heard them pronounced by different people. :?

1. Talk : TOCK, TAWK, TALK
2. Lawn : LON, LUW-un, LAWN
3. Frog : FROG, FRAWG, FRUW-ug
4. Lever : LEV-er, LEE-ver
5. Iron : I-run, I-urn, IRN, AH-yurn
6. Oil : OH-ul, OH-ee-ul, ULL, URL
7. Diamond : DAH-yah-mund, DIE-mund
8. Didn't : DID-nt, DINT, DIH-int
9. Whale : WALE, HWALE, WELL
10. What : WUT, WAHT, HWUT, HWAHT
11. Roof : ROOF, RUFF

Once everyone is done, I'll post the correct answers.

1. Talk, I definitely pronounce the L really a lot, for some reason.
2. Lawn, and I carry it out for really long so it takes me 10 minutes to say "Mow the lawn," 'cause it turns out "Moh thuh lawwwwwwwwn."
3. Frawg
4. Lev-Errr
5. I-urn . . . DUH!
6. Oyy-Uhl, my Dad says "Arl . . ." what a loser. :P
7. Die-Mund
8. Dihdnt, it's all one syllable (much like orange), honest.
9. Wale/Wail
10. Wut . . . But that reminds me, when I say "want," it's not like "wunt," like most people say it, it's all like "wahnt." Very weird.
11. Roof

I'm the only one who speaks correctly, thank you very much. :D

I think I understand ya.  And also keep in mind that British R's are more silent or indistinct than Irish or American R's.  So for Americans, the OR in her pronunciations sounds a lot more like a long W to most of us.

(TORK = TWWK) or (LORN = LWWN)

 :D

I'm sorry - it's beugel.  Trek aan de beugel.

Om te opennen, draai naar links en trek aan de beugel.

Does that sound better?

Well, I think that's about enuff.  I have to say of all the people who posted, it was actually someone from NEW ZEALAND who appears to have the least accent. :P  And you others claim to speak English!  Here are the correct answers:

1. Talk : TALK
2. Lawn : LAWN
3. Frog : FROG
4. Lever : LEV-er (LEE-ver acceptible for the soap)
5. Iron : I-run
6. Oil : OH-ul (only one person got this right!)
7. Diamond : (technically, neither is correct, but DIE-mund is closest)
8. Didn't : DID-nt
9. Whale : WALE (HWALE acceptible in select regions)
10. What : WAHT (HWAHT acceptible in select regions)
11. Roof : ROOF

You're wrong on IRON and OIL. Just because the R in IRON s before the O doesn't mean you pronounce it like that. OIL is OYYY-ul.

Why is there a correct way to pronounce something? It just doesn't exist. Oh and plus, if anyone was going to win it should've been me (mwhaaha) because i live in Wessex- where English was suppose to have originated.

I'm just not good at phonetics so I don't know how to type them out... plus, to me those sounds would be spelt differently, which to you English-speaking ppl would be weird to read even if the sound of it is exactly the same thing... er, does that make any sense? :?

I guess I'd pronounce things similar to the British way though. So, yeah the way Rosie posted it. More or less lol I have this British-y accent. Those of you who've heard me speak in English might be able to explain better than me.

And... Yes, yes, yes! There IS a correct way. The British way. Always. ;) You Americans only distorted the sound of it (lol J/k I just prefer the British accent, that's all. Well the standard one anyway)
