any thoughts?
please add your thoughts.  ???

As usual, I'm in a tricky predicament
Weather in my thoughts, on the roof sneaking a cigarette
Dear California, it's been nice to know ya
Tell me will you miss me when I'm gone?

Cause he loves me as I leave, so I'm gonna go
When I'm not in company is when you feel it most
And you keep my memory, I hope ya keep me close
Would you love me as I leave?

This alchemy is making me suspicious
Oo, as if I slipped you some belladonna
That I crossed town to get, didn't you notice
My grand French exit?

Oh he loves me as I leave, so I'm gonna go
When I'm not in company is when you feel it most
And you keep my memory, I hope ya keep me close
Would you love me as I leave?

Ever changing as the sea, it's my only hope
It's just me and my pup in the open road
But your face is like a paper cut to the heart
Slip away while you sleep

It's easy, it's easier
Than it seems
It's easy, it's easier
Than it seems

Just go, I'll go, don't cry
I don't know, I don't know, we'll be fine
Hey
Paper cut to the heart

Oh he loves me as I leave, so I'm gonna go
When I'm not in company is when you feel it most
And you keep my memory, I hope ya keep me close
Would you love me as I leave?

Ever changing as the sea
Would you love me as I leave?
Dear California
Would you love me as I leave?
Dear California
Would you love me as I leave?
Dear California
Would you love me as I leave?
Dear California

ok, ill try to help. putting my two cents, this is what i get. mostly from the itunes song.

Cause he loves me as I leave, so I'm gonna go
And I'm not in company's when you feel it most
And you keep my memory, hope ya keep me close
Would you love me as I leave?

This alchemy is making me suspicious
As if I said "dear son, better luck on it"
And across town to get, would you moan?
At least my grand plan checks it
(anything in this paragraph doesn't make any sense so ill leave it like that)

Well he loves me as I leave, so I'm gonna go
And I'm not in company's when you feel it most
And you keep my memory, hope ya keep me close
Would you love me as I leave?

And I've been changing as the sea is my only home (what?xD)
It's just me and my pocket little notes
But your face is like a paper cut to the heart
Laying while you sleep

It's easy, it's easier
Than it seems
It's easy, it's easy
Than it seems
Just go, I'll go
(??)
Don't cry

lol, so lame.

I like these lines...

And something's been happening between V and the sea.... Remember the lines from The Marching Line?

Will you miss me when I'm gone
Cause he loves me as I leave
So I've gotta go
I'm not in companies when you feel it most
When you keep my memory
I hope you keep me close
Would you love me as I leave

This alchemy is making me suspicious
As if I slipped you some belladonna
That I crossed town to get (reminds me of the witch doctor lines from HTB)
And you know, yes, my grand friend chugs it (?)

Oh he loves me as I leave
So I've gotta go
I'm not in companies when you feel it most
When you keep my memory
I hope you keep me close
Would you love me as I leave

I'm as changing as the seas
It's my only hope
It's just me and my pup and the open road (Kerouac and Charley pup tweet, remember?)
But your face is like a papercut to the heart
Fileting (?) while you sleep

It's easy, it's easier
Than it seems
It's easy, it's easy
Than it seems
Just go, I'll go
Don't cry

I sort of like this, it's different from the other tracks on the record...most likely a grower. It has a Beach Boys-y vibe to it.

This is such a summer song, I can't wait to just chill out on the beach to this one.  I love that it's a send-off song, yet so light and chill.

It's so catchy. I think it would be a good single at some point.

"Carousel"
"I Don't Want To Be A Bride"
"Dear California"

Although, I wouldn't mind this being second. It's quite different for Vanessa.

I wonder what it'd be like when V performed this live...  ::) I'm eager to see how she'll deliver such sunny song.

I have a feeling this will be a Spring Street on this album aka she isn't gonna be performing this live unless it actually is released as a single.

But what I LOVE is how she incorporates this weird witchcrafty lines about belladonna and alchemy (No wonder she keeps using it in tweets)?
AMAZING.

I've always considered it to be a magic drug ;-)

I also just found out it is the name of a Stevie album :P "Bella Donna" ;)

To take things quite literally, a belladonna can be a homeopathic substance. Thinking of California though, I'm pretty sure it's some drug (pot maybe?). :P

I love the Belladonna reference :)

and the lyrics "your face is like a paper cut to the heart" are instantly a favourite - I definitely know that feeling, just seeing someone you love/d is a painful sting about what you've lost and what you miss.

It's this "whether" not "weather," right? Unless if she's being poetic and describing her thoughts as jumbled.

I don't see why it can't be "weather" tbh. It makes sense, since she's standing on the roof in California.

at first I was thinking weather ? that makes no sense.  Then I listened to it and weather in my head is very poetic.  could be stormy thoughts, or sunshiny happy thoughts, while smoking a cigarette on the roof .

For some, I find that after quitting but then having one every once in a while, it makes me all jittery.  My other thought is, if someone says "whether" they usually follow that up with two statements connected with an "or" like, "whether in my thoughts or sneaking a cigarette" (which makes no sense and i know that's not what she says, just using it as an example of what one would say using the word whether (which i know is misspelled anyway))

I find that too Sara! (btw, nice name :))

If you smoke often, then yes, they have the affect of being "calming" (although cigarettes themselves don't make you feel calm, it's more that they relieve the anxiety associated with you craving one - so going from anxious to feeling normal is a relatively "calming" feeling)

But yeh, if I haven't had one in a long time, just like Sara, it hits me quite hard and I feel a bit jittery too.

(PS. trying to quit right now - anyone have any advice??)

Well we know she smokes weed occasionally (or not-so-occasionally when she's on tour).
I get the feeling that she might also be an occasional smoker as well.
I can't see her as a pack-a-day regular smoker, but maybe she will have a cigarette every now and then, like when she's stressed or drinking or something (like me)

Not that I'm judging, I would have not place to judge that, I've done plenty worse in my day.  I actually think it would be quite an experience to smoke up with her.  She is probably a lot of fun not to mention the conversations she must have with her enormously smart brain.

I think she's talked about it jokingly. But nonetheless, I wouldn't judge her. I think it would actually be an experience. And yeah, any conversation with her would seem great. She really seems like she could hold a strong conversation.

Lol... That's often the way I smoke too... When I'm drinking/stressed... But I can imagine V maybe doing the same. I mean...  I'm sure she isn't any teetotaller :P

To answer your question about quitting, I've tried doing this once when I found myself staring at an entire pack one day (during a REALLY stressed out time) I actually smoked two of them and then tore each one up and threw them from my balcony... It was creepy but also a bit liberating...

Yeh I know, I don't smoke much (a couple a day), but about once a week I'll throw a half empty deck out and be like "that's it, I'm done, I'm quitting". That moment is liberating, but it unfortunately never seems to last long *sigh* :-\

was curious about the plant so I looked it up! (from wikipedia):
Atropa belladonna or Atropa bella-donna, commonly known as Belladonna, Devil's Berries, Death Cherries or Deadly Nightshade, is a perennial herbaceous plant in the family Solanaceae, native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia. The foliage and berries are extremely toxic, containing tropane alkaloids. These toxins include scopolamine and hyoscyamine which cause a bizarre delirium and hallucinations,[1] and are also used as pharmaceutical anticholinergics.

It has a long history of use as a medicine, cosmetic, and poison. Before the Middle Ages, it was used as an anesthetic for surgery, the ancient Romans used it as a poison

Atropa belladonna, along with related plants such as jimson weed (Datura stramonium), have occasionally been used as a recreational drug because of the vivid hallucinations and delirium that it produces. These hallucinations are most commonly described as very unpleasant, however, and recreational use is considered extremely dangerous because of the high risk of unintentional fatal overdose.[29][30][31] In addition, the central nervous system effects of atropine include memory disruption, which may lead to severe confusion.[32]

In the past, it was believed that witches used a mixture of belladonna, opium poppy, and other plants, typically poisonous (such as monkshood and poison hemlock) in flying ointment they applied to help them fly to gatherings with other witches. Carlo Ginzburg and others have argued that flying ointments were preparations meant to encourage hallucinatory dreaming

I remember watching this movie 'Practical Magic' starring Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock where they play witches. In the movie, they use Belladonna to make a guy tipsy (and end up murdering him).

I mentioned this earlier... It seems like a definite witchcraft ingredient ;)

She's so occult ;)

LOVE LOVE LOVE that movie.  I err on the side of her also being occult! Maybe that's just my projection though :)   she is definitely open minded when it comes to cultures and religions outside of the "normal" ones.
I noticed, most especially in this album, she makes a lot of celestial references - moon, sun, stars, weather.
In regaurds to how belladonna is used in this song, I think she means it to be more on the poison side than the drug side, or she would use more hallucinatory references rather than saying the alchemy is "suspicious".  if that makes any sense.

Maybe it's still personal, but not as very personal as 'Rinse.' I don't think V is not like Regina Spektor who write totally unpersonalized songs. I think there's still personal attachment to the song, though not as intimate maybe.

Oh yeah i get that! i mean she still has some real feeling in the song, but it just really doesn't fit with the image of her that i have in my head. I don't really know why lol. Yeah she's not like Regina Spektor at all (with the unpersonalised songs) Which is what surprised me so much with dear california. Still think it's a good song, just not an immediate favourite.

And as she has mentioned - she has waken up. She's more alive than ever. I think that her positivity just radiates even in her new songs. Everything just sounds more hopeful and brighter.

Well we know she smokes weed occasionally (or not-so-occasionally when she's on tour).
I get the feeling that she might also be an occasional smoker as well.
I can't see her as a pack-a-day regular smoker, but maybe she will have a cigarette every now and then, like when she's stressed or drinking or something (like me)
Lol... That's often the way I smoke too... When I'm drinking/stressed... But I can imagine V maybe doing the same. I mean...  I'm sure she isn't any teetotaller :P

So in the LiveStream session she admitted to "drinking a lot of whiskey and smoking a lot of cigarettes" to try and get her voice to have that "leathery sound".
That made me laugh - she's so quirky, and just so... "vanessa"

I didn't know she smoked weed..?  Is this just speculation or ..?

she's confirmed it many times.

Just going to ask that too.

I think the lyrics could be either honestly, depending on what line i want to hear when listening is usually what i get. I think i prefer the 'grand friend checks it,' but i've only listened to the Livestream one, as i'm not downloading the album, so i really couldn't tell you. As with the ;ortune tellers...' i suppose we'll just have to wait for the lyrics in the booklet.

I think that the "grand French exit" mentioned is the manner how she took the belladonna across the town. It could also pertain to the way how she leaves California.

I hope that'd make sense.

...let me get this straight. She killed her former lover by slipping belladonna in his drink, killing the guy, ("Slip away while you sleep"), leaving without a word, starts a new life on her own as a fresh beginning, being "easier than it seems" as she tries to hold back regrets ("Don't cry")?

The fact that she was able to mask such a devious and dark action with happiness from the deed with cheery instrumentals is just nothing short of amazing. I never even understood that until that second verse was cleared up. It's official. This is probably now one of my favorites on the album.

From memory, in the movie doesn't she put belladonna in his tequila to make him go to sleep so she can get away?

That's also the same message I get from the lyrics in Dear California. She slipped him some belladonna (that she crossed town to get), so he wouldn't notice her "grand French exit" (ie. so she could leave unnoticed). I don't think Vanessa's saying she killed him.

Hmm... I think this is too much of a coincidence, and that maybe she is making a reference to the movie.
I hope so, I love the movie :D

Once upon a time when John Mayer first came on the screen, I checked him out because people said he was like DMB, who is my fav band.  In his first album there was a song, I don't even know it because I only listened once, that was cheery music but sad lyrics.  I was like WTF this makes no sense, he's awful, nothing like DMB, and I boycotted him (unfairly? Maybe. But that's the choice I made at the time).  Now, Vanessa does the same thing and it works.  Hypocrite?  Maybe.  But what she does with lyrics and melodies just WORKS.  She sounds amazing.  Her lyrics are clever and witty and it just WORKS.

Reminds me of a school project I had to do: We had to theme our project after music, TV, etc. Naturally, I chose ATM because people would be able to follow it, and its V.

Also, for meaning of the songs, she doesn't actually sing that she gave him the belladonna -- she says "as if I gave you some belladonna"  so I"m not sure how that plays the theories..

Didn't V say that C'est la vie was about John mayer?
Hehe... She did say it meant "FUCK YOU"... right? It makes sense ;-)

BTW, we are discussing a WHOLE NEW topic over here. :P

fuck it. (in the Nashville performance anyway).  ha, sorry for the departure, I was just setting up how I felt about the song with an example :x

Also, for meaning of the songs, she doesn't actually sing that she gave him the belladonna -- she says "as if I gave you some belladonna"  so I"m not sure how that plays the theories..

Maybe it's just a fantasy? How you may think "I really want to slip some of this belladonna in his drink because I hate his guts..." That's another idea.

Okay, don't think I'm stupid if you've all already figured this out, but I just realized the other day "Dear California" is like "Dear John" --the quintessential break up letter.  People refer to break up letters as a  "dear John".  I also think there was a show or a song for a tv show once that started "dear John, dear john, by the time you get this note, I'll be gone"  With this in mind, she's not saying goodbye to the state, but the person who she is leaving in that state (this I already knew but thought I'd add here anyway)

based on last night and rewatching her livestream session, sometimes she sings "when i'm not in company you feel the ghost".

in varying places, depending on the performance. but in the studio, i think i hear it in the second chorus and fourth chorus.

On the first pages of this thread, attempts to post accurate lyrics actually get good. Dear California from the digital booklet is 100% accurate at least  :D

Peace

I'm really SORRY for being off topic but did V really date him? That's kind of funny. Every famous woman under the age of , let's say, 35 (well that's not true Aniston is like 42 I believe) goes on and on about how he's such a jerk, yet it seems like every single one of them (and clever ones!) has slept with him (Taylor Swift, Michelle Branch, etc.)

I'm (sort of) working on a transcription sort of blending the piano and guitar so it sounds close to the record when played. So far I came up with.

E is the first chord, I toggle between octaves on the bottom hand and play the melody starting out with B, E, Ab and then a trill between A and Ab.

The verse chords start with A, B, E

I play by ear so I don't really know how to explain it very well. If I figure out the whole thing and record it I'll post it, but I'm really lazy lately so that might not be anytime soon!

Here's the chords for the guitar. It's the same on piano.
