I've also ordered 'The year of magical thinking'. The way she described it sounded amazing so i'm very eager to read it.

I'm reading it right now! It's a mourning book; it's beautiful and really sad.

Ahh such teases. I wish they were all recorded to have the quality of Harmonium/H&T. Of course with the details effect (hissing, rain, oceans) still included. Analog sounds not good enough for me.

This exactly. I don't know.. I think the sound actually ruined some of the songs.

Fairweather Friends remains my favorite, even though the original lyrics in my opinion were the best. </3 It's produced great, though.

It's sad, but it's almost a letdown to see some of these songs recorded on analog. Some fit, but others were clearly meant for a higher method of recording.

Music - I play viano, violin, guitar and flute, as well as sing. I love a lot of recorded music -- I've been listening a lot to Florence and the Machine lately.

You can argue technique all day long, who has more training or more experience or even a wider range, but it all comes down to whether the performance moves you or not.  Vanessa may not be the best singer of all time(I think it's Ella Fitzgerald, actually), but she is amazingly consistent, having seen her live many times. The sound of her voice stirs something in me, and has since day one.

Over-use of vibrato can create pitch problems versus the rest of a track.

For what it's worth, I once did a vocal on a track and at one point I managed to sing with vibrato.  And you know what?  My voice sucks, so vibrato itself doesn't mean anything.  Ever hear Maroon 5's "She Will Be Loved" where all of Adam's vibrato is autotuned out?  Friggin' creepy.  Point is, vibrato has its place but it isn't everything.

This. In singing and violin, vibrato is used to add depth to a pitch. However, a lot of people use it to eliminate tone and pitch problems.

In vocals, it actually deteriorates the vocal folds if it's not used correctly. Scary? D:

I think I like Vanessa's voice more without a lot of it. I'm listening to Heroes and Thieves right now, and in Hands on Me she uses it very, very lightly. C: It sounds nice that way. Her way of singing sounds really natural -- it's not the most fantastic voice I've ever heard, but it's up there because it conveys emotion.

Also, am I even allowed to post it here? Like these are the album versions of the songs. When Carousel came out earlier in different countries everyone threw a fit when we asked if they could post a download link because the song needed to be bought. Obviously we are all going to buy the music but how is posting the album versions of the song different than posting Carousel earlier before it was released in other countries? Again, I'd be glad to do it but I don't want to get in trouble because these songs do need to be bought.

These stations stream to all Starbucks shops, right?

I'm not sure, but I think they'll have a radio url that's common to all of them, that you should be able to take and use on any computer. That's what I would look for first, because it's free and pretty easy to get normally.

Other than that, I would suggest getting a voice recorder (they're not normally expensive), some earplugs, and blasting the music after closing. That's a desperate move though. xD

If anyone here listens to Kimya Dawson, the folks over at her messageboard did something similar to this except they all contributed in creating a cover album for Kimya's songs. I think we should do something similar to that, it'd be really fun and it'd possibly bring us all closer. Plus we'd be able to share our gifts with each other. I'd suuuuper be willing to help organize it or anything. Lemme know what you guys think.

I think that this is cool too. (: I can imagine beautiful colors for the covers of Bride and Carousel.
