Title: English Snow, Thunder, Lightning and top up fees
Post by: rosieposy87 on January 28, 2004, 10:22:22 am
WOOOOAH! There was a massive flash and i thought someone was taking a picture through my window, and then there was the loudest rumble of thunder- and then it started SNOWING! Its snowed at least 2 inches in only half an hour! ITS AMAZING!! My mum has been in London all day and she says its like the apocalypse. Everything here is orange and weird!!

I know there is a thread on snow but this is TOO special to go on the 5th page of a thread! We never ever ever get snow, my dad said it was "Collectors weather" LMAO. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

and top up fees won, views!? I can't take a gap year now! i was planning on going to America!

EDIT: Piiics!

Me trying not to be hit by a snowball from my brother! (Yes those are my dad's shoes that i'm wearing which make me bear a scary resemblance to Santa)

Me looking doubtful at the 'snowman' me and my brother just attempted, at one point we decided it was going to be a snowbunny, can ya tell? No.

We had snow and I got to leave work early because of it :) No orange, but I have seen that before, it is weird.

Soon everyone in this country will have a degree anyway. They're too easy and as a result, they're completely devalued. Even a 3 year old could get a degree in this country. Soon they'll be no point paying for a degree at all. Raising the price (i.e. top-up fees) will only make it worse. The problem is that the government's goal of "Getting more people into uni" isn't a good objective, it can only ever lead to a saturated market. Universities burn money. I say we scrap top-up fees and let some of them shut down, the market will pick up for the ones that stay alive (the most cost efficient ones), then they can afford to make their courses harder which will only increase the value of a degree. The government pays for those who attend, but they can afford it because not everyone with a pulse is going to uni. Genius!

I do also wonder if ministers were voting on the actual policy or (unprofessionally) on Blair himself.

-Kev

P.S. I was joking about the genius thing, I have no idea if my plan would work (which is why I don't work in government ;-))

*Wearing a bowler hat, pinstriped suit, a newspaper under the arm and carrying a long unopen umbrella* Why yes Andrew, that would be splendid old chap. Although I do apologise for my terribly common tea, I have just recently run out of earl grey and haven't had the time to ask Jeeves to buy any more.

Eek. I wouldn't go that far. Degrees aren't worthless quite yet and certianly masters degrees and Ph.D qualifications are still valuable. Besides, at the high end universities the standards are still relatively good (in other words, the courses are still difficult).

i dont really mean just "dont go to uni" it's just that Tia is 13 at the moment and a lot can happen in the 5 or so years before she is eligible for uni. Besides I go to Uni myself. Its great but it's not the be all and end all like a lot of people try to make out.

im studying digital media.....its like media but more boring....reading sterio instructions instead of a paper sort of thing  :D

I think he was? I was the one who said i wanted to go to america?

Hmmm anyway now there will be so much competition for uni places next year, and if i want to go to Oxbridge its going to be so much harder. But i do also agree that not everyone should go, 50% of the population aren't clever enough. It pisses me off, and really disadvantages the middle class.

P.S SNOW!

Today was the BEST! I went in and my pyschology lesson was cancelled so we just ran up the hill in the college grounds and made snow angels, and had snowball fights and mucked around until we couldn't feel our bums anymore and then we had hot chocolate in the canteen! Its SO funny seeing everyone trying to look cool and not fall over, it was a most chuckleworthy journey to school.

Colchester! I've been there! Hehe if you drive up a bit, then east, right next to the sea, in the middle of nowhere, is where I used to study! (it's in Suffolk though, but very close to Colchester)

Anyway, Rosie, Kev, and the rest... I actually wanted to ask you about top-up fees (and the Hutton inquiry, but that goes on LJ). I've been watching the BBC almost non-stop these days you see... and I was wondering, what do exactly top-up fees mean? And why did Tony Blair have so much trouble convincing its very own MPs to vote for him? I eve heard Gordon Brown had to convince the Labour MPs who support him to vote for Blair, cos they apparently didn't want to. I'm sorry if those are absurd questions, but I'm an ignorant human being who's been watching far too much BBC lol

Well i'm not completely informed about the details of top up fees- but for the most part i do know whats going on. Top up fees allow universities to add a certain amount of money to pay to the course you study (up to 3000 pounds)- for instance it could be argued that while someone who goes to a community college pays roughly the same as someone going to Oxford- and that clearly isn't fair. The government also wants to expand the number of people going to university to 50% (a stupid target in my mind) so thet need extra money for that. So in relation to the course you study, you pay extra money. LOTS of MPs didn't agree with this, for many many different reasons that would take hours to explain.

It also became an issue of the government's authority, Blair did the old "back me or sack me" because so many were planning to rebel. Quite why Blair made such a big deal of what was just a contraversial piece of legislation i will never know. A lot of MPs were planning on rebelling just on the basis that they didn't agree with the principles (and because in Labour's manifesto they stated they wouldn't introduce top up fees), not that they wanted to insult Blair. But anyway, it was down to last minute consultations etc etc and they won- 5 votes in it and 9000 quid extra if i take a gap year.

I must admit that I'm not at all informed when it comes to politics. I don't buy newspapers on principle because 80% is either unfounded allegations, lies or simply not news (nothing to with celebrities is news!). The BBC is at least celebrity free but, as amply demonstrated by the hutton inquiry, there are still lies and unfounded allegations to content with. I never have any idea who to believe, the media will say whatever the public wants to hear and the government will say whatever will get them more votes at the next election. So I usually don't bother to follow politics :-\

From what I do know I probably can't tell you any more than Rosie has. I did get the impression that it wasn't just a vote on top-up fees but that it was also being used as a vote of no confidence in Mr. Blair, hense the rebellion.

It was so unusual but then it all looked so pretty as it feel on the drive! I can't believe it's all gone now! But, it was the first time we'd had snow in 10 years so I was so happy!  :D

And yes this deserves to up on top to celebrate Englands rare occurance of snow!!!
