Nolita Fairytale
The One w/ Stevie Nicks
White Houses
Heroes & Thieves
Fools Like Me
A Thousand Miles
Home

Who's To Say

Katia fed me the setlist as it happened, haha. Nicole called me so I could hear a couple songs. V and Stevie doing The One together was hot! V sounds on tonight and hit some nice high notes in White Houses and Fools Like Me, too.

so my review - i will keep it uber short

in one word to sum up the show - classy
in one word to sum up VC - humble

all of y'all talking about how she has become some diva - are on crack...
i think some of my fave moments were when you was so into the songs that she wasn't paying attention and played some wrong notes on the piano - she was all "opps, that wasn't right" and she laughed

she said it was her fave show she has done
it was my fave show of her's i have seen

the stage was intimate set with a curtain black with twinkly lights like stars behind her and two very beautiful crystal chandeliers above her (which she brought in - the roxy doesn't have that stuff)

stevie beamed how proud she was of vc - like a proud mother
and VC beamed about how much stevie changed her life
Irv came on the stage in the middle of the set (after his intro) just to re-itterate how great she is.

irv was standing like a giggly kid on the side of the stage the majority of the show just shining and oozing love for VC and her music

irv came out after the show and talked to all of us and took pics with us - as did VC

irv said he really just wants to honor us "NESSAholics" he wants to do htings Vanessa's way because he is one of us... he was so sincere - and she sincerely seems so proud to be part of his "family"

i will share pics when i can - and i'll put some vids on youtube - but it will probably be a day or two

i loved seeing all my old friendly nessa friends and getting a chance to see some new kids as well

my old school peeps that were there

Let
Nicole
Holly
Manda
Jessica
Steve

<3 you Guys!
as always keep in touch

I really hope when she tours for the album
she plays small, beautiful, intimate shows just like this
so, you guys can share the special moment we shared tonight
xoxo

That was an excellent show. For my first time seeing Vanessa live, I thought that was one of the best shows I've been to. And now I have to say that I don't feel as stupid for waiting in line since NOON. Even considering how nobody else showed up until about 5:30, haha. But it was definitely worth it, now that I think about it. :D

My favorite songs of the night would have to be "The One" (it made me think about things, for some reason, & I kinda got emotional ) and "Who's to Say," because of what she said when introducing the song - how it's for those who are in a relationship not approved/accepted by their mother, or George Bush.

Vanessa is far more talented than a lot of artists out there. I can't wait to see her again. And a special thank you to those who I met with and talked to at the show, that truly made the experience better for me.  :)

Before I write my little review, I would like to thank Katia and Let for bringing me with them to LA. I am just another poor, unemployed engineering student and I would have never have been able to afford this trip on my own. I'm glad I got to go on such a wonderful trip to see my first V show.

We got to the theater a bit before 6. We were second in line (xxbehindhazeleyesxx was the first) and waited quite a bit. You could hear the sound check if you stood in front of the door. I later discovered that you could see in through the glass door and view the stage if you blocked the glare with your hand. I saw and heard V working on The One with Stevie. Steveau brought a radio so we heard V's radio appearance on there. Since it was going on at the same time as the sound check, it didn't take Sherlock Holmes to deduce that the whole thing was prerecorded. It was kinda weird to hear a recorded version of one of her songs on one side of me and her doing a sound check with another one at the same time. :-p Doors opened at 8ish (tickets said 7:30) and the curtain rose at 9ish.

Irv came on at the beginning and introduced V. It was pretty much a lovefest. The crowd cheered when he said he'd shut up and bring V on stage. It's nice that he has such a great sense of humor.

Vanessa kicked all kinds of ass, as always. She started out with Ordinary Day. If you haven't been to a concert of hers or haven't heard many bootlegs, you might not know that she almost always performs this song with the "divide and conquer" lyrics. Next, she played Hands on Me. She introduced this song with a short little story about how the title irked her mom. She introduced Nolita Fairytale by explaining how moving to Nolita and being mentored by Stevie Nicks motivated the song. After Nolita, she introduced Stevie Nicks and played The One. Stevie brought lyrics sheets onto the stage and said that it was the first time that she had ever used them at a performance. Apparently she just came up with the harmony part a week ago and lost her recording of the song when she dropped her iPod in the pool. Stevie's voice was soulful as always and the texture played off of that of V's voice rather well. She introduced White Houses not with a narration, but with an improv mini-overture of sorts. When she introduced Heroes and Thieves, she said that there were quite a few heroes in the theater and named a few people who had helped her. She introduced Fools Like Me by explaining that it's about love. She said that we're all fools. We fall in love, get burned, and then fall in love again like we've never learned anything from our prior experiences. She introduced ATM by thanking Ron Fair, who she said really helped her with that song. She introduced Home by talking about all the stuff she's done in LA and said it was a premiere (she forgot playing it at NY or WNBA?). She played Who's To Say, with the standard intro "This is for those of you who are in relationships that are not approved of by your mother or President Bush."

Up until this concert, my only exposure to Vanessa has been through her recorded stuff or boots, albeit on some rather impressive sound systems. All the recordings lack something, though. The albums are overproduced to hell and back and get rid of all sorts of interesting things. The boots, while having the raw emotion and energy that the albums lack, still kinda suck as the recordings are of poor quality. It was an entirely different feeling being right by the stage and having the amplified bass notes just shake your body and her voice engulfing you. I am now a firm believer in the idea that Vanessa is best enjoyed live. It was amusing when she messed up and said little things like "it doesn't go like that."

Somewhere during the set, V told the story of how she first played for Irv. His reaction was "you motherfucker! that's the shit!" (or something like that). The song after she told that story, Irv came on to the stage, hugged her, and yelled "you're the motherfucking shit!" She said that stuff like that is why she loves Irv. "If he feels like rushing the stage, he will." She also said that she expected him to do that after every song that night, lest she believe that her subsequent songs weren't as good.

The only thing that was bad about the show is that it was far too short. I wasn't timing the thing, but the entire set including encore and talking was about an hour long. It was still worth all the money and travel, but I would have really liked to have heard more, especially some songs from the new album that we haven't heard yet, or perhaps some songs that didn't make the cut for the album.

After the show, Irv came out and talked with us. He was really chill and told us that we (the NESSAholics) were the ones he cared most about pleasing. He said he understood that some people had concerns because acts like V's have been "urbanized" (e.g. Nelly Furtado). He told us that there is really nothing to worry about as he strongly believes in letting her do her own thing.  Let told her story of how she was the original NESSAholic (if you don't know, you might want to ask her sometime) and he seemed quite interested.

V came out to do pictures and signing stuff about 30 minutes after the show. I got a picture taken of me with V, Manda, and one of her friends.  When I was posing for this first picture, she told me, "wow, you're really tall." We also got a pic V with all the NH.com staff in LA (me, Kat, Let, Nicole). She signed my ticket and I'm amused that her signature is pretty similar to mine: a scribble.

That concert was amazing. It was my first Vanessa concert and she was so amazing. I love Fools Like Me and Home. Those songs are sooo amazing. She changed some parts of White Houses and Who's to Say to make them better, and they really do. I wish she would rerecord them that way haha.

Anyway, it was wonderful. Thanks to Let and Shane for letting me in the bubble. haha=]

But, I'm very disappointed that no one told me about the signing and the thing with Irv afterwards. I would have liked to been there.

We didn't know that it would happen, we just hung around and hoped that it would. I'm sure you would have been pissed if we had you waiting there 50 minutes for something that never happened. :-P

The concert was the most beautiful simple and mesmorizing experience ever.

I was diagonal from her piano and so the piano was blocking my view of her except for her eyes, which were so full of emotion and gave life to each of her songs. Vanessa Carlton live is so much fun, singing along with her and other fellow fans was the best.

also glad to made friends with people i was in line with

especially Will, thanks for talking with me and passing time as we waited

and that star 98.7 promoter guy said he would put the pictures of all of us on this website

it was good times in deed! So awesome to see all the old holics (even if V doesn't call us that) Steve, Jess, Holly, to be having a drink with you two... How the time has flown.

So awesome to meet newbies, glad you made it to the forum, Shane, Tonks, Maira.

Cavin, glad you made it too.

The show was awesome. V really seemed happy and greatful.

Irv is cool, it was nice to tell him in person how much we appreciate him supporting her.

Big love to Steph, Nicole and Katia.

I think everything was covered so I really didn't have anything to add, sorry.

I had an unsteady hand cam but I think you guys will get over it, if not we know Kulpy will rip it and there you go.

More later...  it's only at 36%

Ok, here's the link, not sure if it's ready yet, I am going back to bed.

It was great seeing everyone again! Lunch was fun! I wish I coulda hung out more at the show! I wanted to stay after but my friend was exhausted from work so we left.

It was an awesome show as always. Will pretty much described the show so I will just talk about my experience. First of all, I had told Kaysha that I was recording the Star show but when I checked it I found that it didn't record so sorry for not having that. I'm glad I had my radio so we could listen to her there.

It was great seeing everyone again. This includes Let, Kaysha, Nicole, Venti, Steph, Jessica and some new people like Will, xxbehindhazeleyesxx, Tonks, and Manda (I'm assuming it was you from the black dress) by the way sorry for bumping into you after the show.

I was kind of under the piano so my view wasn't great but I had a great look at the shoes Steph was talking about

I liked Nolita much better last night and Home was really good too. The One is my favorite song and Heroes & Thieves was awesome live. I'm undecided about Fools Like Me.

I managed to get a setlist from the show and I guess it was the setlist from the Bowery. I got it signed by Irv and Vanessa and got a picture with them individually. Vanessa wrote "I adore U Steveau!" on my setlist which still makes me smile today.

From my experience at the Roxy, every act I've seen there eventually comes out to see some fans if you're willing to wait but some only meet fan club members. Vanessa seems to always see people after playing there.

Can't wait for her next event!

Steveau its okay about bumping into me, unfortunately I'm anemic (recently found out) and I haven't really taken care of my body the way I should, which is my fault and being in a crowded room, with no iron supplements which my body is lacking very much...made me get dizzy to the point of passing out twice. I literally pushed through the crowd to sit down or else I was going to be a heap on the floor.

It has never gotten this bad, so now I'm scheduling an emergency visit to the doctor to run some tests and such. But I know she's going to tell me I need more iron and it needs to be done asap.

---Aside from that drama, I had a really great time yesterday. I cannot express how grateful I am to have had the pleasure of meeting you all. Katia, thank you so so so much for helping me out with my car trouble (I had to replace both my front tires btw), lunch was good wasn't really digging the pancakes too much but I hope Stephanie's friends or whomever she passed them onto had more of a sweet tooth than I do and enjoyed them.

As for the show, I wish it would have been longer but I was honestly content. I think she completely blew me away as usual with her personality and of course extraordinary voice!

It was great meeting you all especially Stephanie, Katia, Will, Holly, Let, Steveau, Cavin...My cousin said "The One" was her favorite, she's a little shy and (she's a teacher too!) doesn't like to mingle much with people she doesn't know. Otherwise I would have been around all of you more. But We weren't that far from each other in line or in the venue.

oh thanks so much! They're both so down to earth!

their voices blend really well together but they're both really different at the same time... Stevie has that sort of soul, gritty sound and V has that "it" sound, so pure and they just... blend! musical talent at its best!  :)

Edit: did anyone catch that Stevie had H&T album on her iPod before she dropped it in the pool? So it must be really close to being done. Now we just have to go to her place in LA, try and get it from her pool or break into her house and try to retrieve the songs...  8)

hello-
i just wanted to say -that though the sound is super loud on your mic on your camera - you were at a great spot for good room sound... I love the way the one sounds - in fact i feel like the harmonies sound better from where you were standing then where we were and we were directly in front of her... so, thanks for sharing your vids

I think this show at The Roxy might be the best Vanessa show I have seen thus far.  I have so much respect for Vanessa and am really happy to have had the opportunity to observe her for the past 5 years.

Vanessa has always seemed very introverted but for the first time ever, i watched her shake the hands of fans from on stage and even sign something for a fan!  I don't think she is even remotely close to acting like a diva, in fact i think the opposite... she was very humble.

The highlights from the show for me were...

 - The new songs... Nolita Fairytale, The One, Hands On Me, Fools Like Me and Home were awesome.  It is so amazing how much Vanessa opens up through her lyrics and music.  Her courage to put herself out there is amazing.

 - Her vocal range in the new songs and how White Houses and Who's To Say were changed blew me away.  The added lyrics in Who's To Say was really hot.

 - The duet with Stevie was truly touching.  I thought it was so cute how while Vanessa was playing she was looking at Stevie and visa versa.

 - Irv watching Vanessa from the side, knowing all the lyrics and singing along.  I think they’re a match made in heaven.  More than anything, I want Vanessa to be very successful and from what I’ve seen, Irv is going to make that happen.

 - Irv running on stage yelling at V that she is the f'ing shit.  Followed by V saying that he needs to do that for all the songs or else she will think the other ones weren't as good as that one.

I can’t imagine what it must be like to handle the stress and popularity she received in 2002 with the success of A Thousand Miles and the fiasco with the label in 2004 with no promotion and no support.  I think Vanessa has a lot of courage to get back out there and open up so much in the new songs.

I don't think it was awe. I think it was more just being moved by having Stevie there and talking like a proud mom. I definitely saw her eyes welling up. It was a unique moment I'm glad I was there to share it as I'm sure everyone else there was too.

I agree with Kaysha that she seems very comfortable now with the spotlight. For a time she would never smile for pictures with fans and now her smile is back and brighter than ever. It's great to see!

I really loved the performance and I got choked up too to see them both sharing that moment and her choking up, trying to hold back tears and even taking a few seconds to start off the song.

But...I have to address this, Stevie didn't even know the lines well you can't deny it she even told the audience and she had papers scattered trying to figure out what to sing. When she was singing it was kind of just, all over the place in my opinion. It was nice to see the reunion-reaction/love going on, but as for Stevie Nicks I'm not a huge fan of her at all she's  on my list with Bjork someone I don't care for and I think doesn't have much singing talent, especially when all she was mostly doing was humming or kind of moaning. "to each his own."

I do agree with you that Stevie didn't really add anything to the song that night because she obviously didn't know the song at all it seemed. That's probably why Vanessa played it over and over at soundcheck. I'm sure it will be better on the album because they can make it perfect during production. I've never been a fan of Stevie or Fleetwood Mac and I'm not crazy about the sound of her voice. That's just my taste.

It did seem like a very "impromptu" performance, but I quite enjoyed it.
And with all due respect, you can't really judge a persons singing talent just by how they "hummed" or "moaned"  background vocals on one song.

Look, don't get snappy with me okay? I said that I wasn't a fan of Stevie Nicks. I don't care for her music, like Bjork. That is why I said, "To each his own" everyone has their own musical tastes. You may like her, you may have liked the performance, but I did not. Stop being a child about it and snapping at me because I stated something I didn't like about the performance that you happened to like, there are others who probably liked the performance too. As an artist you can't please everyone, and I wasn't very pleased with the performance, but she's also not my musical preference.

Title: better late than never.
Post by: vcfan on August 15, 2007, 10:53:26 pm
so i'm kinda way late on this, but i went to this show and it was the CRAZIEST night of my life.

there was 5 of us who went so clearly we made shirts that said, "in my heart it's the 5 of us". cute, i know. hahaha.

anyway, we wanted to get there at 6:30pm to give us an hour before doors opened. things didn't exactly work out that way.

we were driving in the carpool lane (one of those stupid carpool lanes where we're right next to the center divider with no room to breathe) and a car in the lane next to us started merging toward us. my friend who was driving was completely caught off guard and she swirved left... and we slammed into the center median. we were kinda dragging along it and she turned the wheel back the other away and the car went out of control. we were spinning in circles and the next thing i knew, we skid to a stop 2 lanes over. the front of our car was completely smashed in and it was smoking. we were all crying and i was seriously waiting for a car to hit us. by some MIRACLE, we didn't hit any car during this. i don't know where they all went but we were all completely fine.

while we were all crying, one of my friends was not phased at all and she turned to me and was like, "are we still gonna see vanessa?" it kinda lightened the mood a little haha.

so a car pulled up to us to help us. we had to call the cops a couple of times (THE LINE WAS BUSY OF COURSE!) and finally a motorcycle cop zig zagged the freeway to stop traffic while we pulled the car to the shoulder. it was kind of embarrassing/funny that there were 5 girls with matching t-shirts standing on the side of the freeway haha.

we had to get a tow truck and my friend's dad drove out to take us to the concert (YAY!) but by this time it was like 8:30. i was convinced we were gonna miss the beginning of the show and get sucky spots. when we got to the doors, one of my friends realized her ticket was missing so we told the guards everything we went through and he surprisingly let us in without her ticket AND we didn't have to pay for the drinks! we even managed to get decent spots on the side of the stage.

the show was nothing short of amazing. i LOVE vanessa.. she is so insanely talented and her lyrics are genius. as she was walking off the stage at the end, i ran over to the side and yelled, "vanessa, look at my shirt!" and she smiled and was like, "i'll sign it!" so she signed my shirt and i didn't even have to ask her to. :) she was sooo nice.

then we were all waiting around to see if she'd come out and stevie walked by and for some reason i felt like i could act as if we were bff or something and i was like, "oh hey stevie!" and she was like, "hi, how are you?" and i was like, "i'm really good!" hahaha she loves me, obviously.

then vanessa finally came out and i spilled my heart out to her about how i think she's absolutely amazing and i had waited so long to see her in concert. we took pictures and she was so nice. and she loved our shirts! we went outside and we saw her friends who thought our shirts were really cute so they asked if they could take a picture of us.. it was pretty funny.

i can't believe how incredibly lucky we were that night. my friend's car was totalled and the next day we found out it had to be demolished. it was seriously a miracle that none of us were injured in the least bit. ESPECIALLY in LA where traffic is crazy. the cars seriously disappeared. but other than that, our night ended FABULOUSLY because vanessa is just THAT amazing at life.
