Fairweather Friends lyrics!!!
------------------
Say you see through the folly
But you do it for the fame
I'm fighting the jet stream
Drinkin' cheap wine on airplanes
You're in L.A., not Chicago
Key under mat, I walk the dog, order in, home alone
Found your letter on a full moon Sunday night
On your knees in ink you offered a ring, a real life
Pour the vodka, and it dulls sharp knives
Beautiful poetry, but the letter isn't for me
And you didn't really mean it
So I don't have to believe it
If you didn't mean to do it
And magical thinking gets us by
You sing for the after show, those candy colored lips
But your age is showing, and you gotta work harder for it
It's always easier with freshman
I'm just as clever, it's not technically cheating if
I didn't really mean it
So you don't have to believe it
If I didn't mean to do it
And magical thinking gets us by
And you're fragile as porcelain
fragile as porcelain
If you didn't really mean it
And I don't have to believe it
You didn't mean to do it
Then magical thinking gets us by
Gotta get by
Gotta get by
Whatever get us by
We're fair-weather friends

:D this song is one of those songs that just paints an interesting image into my mind. I love it it's brilliant. Despite the fact that she sounded sick that evening her singing talents have devloped so beautifully. V you are amazing!
-
Love this song...
Thanks for the lyrics Kulp...
But this Magical thinking thingy is kinda cool... something about how our minds having the ability to affect the physical world...
-
I get a strong "fools like me" feeling from this song.
very powerful song.
-
this song is hilarious to me. the second verse especially. take that SJ!!!!!!!!!!!
-
this song is hilarious to me. the second verse especially. take that SJ!!!!!!!!!!!
LOL those were my thoughts exactly. When I read the lyrics I thought this song has definitely got to be about him :D
-
mmhmm that def. could be the intention! I can't wait until she *I Hope* plays more shows and explains the songs more.
-
totally a big fuck you to stephen.
i agree with the fools like me vibe. i thought of that as well.
-
I think these are some of her better lyrics. Love it! (And Stephen is an ass.)
-
LULz... I mean the guys age is REALLY showing...
And yeah I second the Fools Like Me thought. But I really hope it remains the same... I know its stupid but some of her songs sound so amazing raw and I don't like the "unintentional" over production.

i agree, i listen so much more to her live songs from heroes and thieves than the record itself, they are so good they don't really need anything adding to them!
and HA sj. those lyrics are amazing...'it's always easier with freshmen' muah ha ha
-
Excuse me. But THAT WAS THE FUCKING SHIT!
Sorry. Loser fake-Irv moment.
But seriously. This song is amazing. And the recording is great. Kudos to the videographer and kulp for the lyrics.
I wish I'd been there. I feel like crying about that. Haha
-
This song is sooooooooooooooo amazing. I'm blown away. Can't await the arrival of a new record. This song just blows me away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
This song is awesome. The melody of the song along with the lyrics really get stuck in your head.
The last time I was this excited about a new song V did in concert before we heard a studio version of it was "She Floats" with the whale sounds, lol.
-
oh my gosh i know i might have said this already if not well someone neeeds to be super awesome and start the music for this and london and the waltz
-

I don't understand what you are saying. ???
-
I'm guessing they mean sheet music. :)
-
sheet music silly lol that's what i mean
-
Shell never seize to amaze me!
Its such a wonderful song and it made me so happy, idk why, I guess because its a new song and she was sso happy when she talked about it (neuro science is so interesting).
I love the lyrics and references in it. Its amazing
-
"I'm just as clever, it's not technically cheating if I didn't really mean it"
I wonder if that means she cheated too? Plus the bit about the letter, which sounds like a proposal to someone else, I wonder if that actually happened or if it's just for the song?
The lyrics are amazing, I really love this song.

I think, and I'm not sure, but I THINK she's just saying that to make a point, to show him that it goes both ways, that she can cheat too and do the same thing to him. Does that make sense? Not really, I know, lol, but it's the best I can do. Maybe if someone goes to a show and gets the chance to talk to her, they can ask.
I would bet money that the whole letter thing is true. Ever since Harmonium, she's been getting more and more candid and personal with her lyrics.
-
"I wanna be your crystal baller
I wanna be your diamond ring
The one I never gave you
And the promise that it brings"
This was written while Stephan was dating Vanessa but was clearly about his ex Charlize Theron, as was the entire Out of the Vein album.

Omg, that's so sad!
GO V!!!
Those lyrics are awesome. Luv it.
the letter part made me think about my ex bf when he proposed. He used the same verses as he used with his old girl. :(

I agree with the un-intentional overproduction! But is the freshman thing referring to her flop sophmore alblum? Or am I stupid and its something else?

Yeah, I think you make sense, beautyofspeed. I think you're saying that she's trying to tell him that if she did the same thing he did, it would still be wrong. Like, let's say, she found out he cheated and she confronts him about it. But he argues back that he didn't have any feelings for the woman he cheated with (he "didn't really mean it") and so what he did shouldn't count as cheating. But then Vanessa's like, "Well, okay, great, now I can have an affair with someone as long as there are no feelings attached. Fair?"
Is that what you were saying? Lol.
I initially was thinking that too BUT, upon further inspection of the lyrics (lol), I think she is saying that she DID cheat. Why? Because of the word didn't in that line. It's past tense, and implies (I think) that it already happened. If she hadn't cheated, but was just just trying to make a point about cheating, she would have instead said "it's not technically cheating if I don't really mean it."
Does that make sense?
-
Fuck it.

I'm fairly sure she is referring to college freshmen. The young type that would definitely be down with having sex with Stephan because it's "cool" to sleep with famous people.

Stop posting!
You're about to have an ampetamine-induced stroke! lmao
Bitch.

Edit: Fuck that.
-
What a beautiful song, I loved it(L). Don't you adore how she says Chicago? hahha. I love it. her high notes r incredible... Thanks 4 the lyrics, love them also...
Nessa keep on rocking!!!

-
im so glad vanessa is still writing new songs. i love this one. it seems the more i llisten to it the more i love it.
-
This song is simply amazing. I can't stop listening to it on YouTube.
CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEW RECORD.
-
I know. Fair Weather Friends is one of the best new songs. Actually, it's turning into one of my favorites. The rithm is so full of life, and the lyrics are amaaazing: "on your knees you offered a ring a real life" I love that part. And the ending is awesome!
It's a really cool song. I hope to hear many similars to this one in her new album ;D
-
I can't wait for the song to come out. Slowly, it's growing on me more and more. It might overtake London as my second favorite from the 3 new songs she's performed live.
-
I love it.
The second verse about Stephen is hilarious.
-
Can anyone tell me what shes says at 1.00 to about 1.10. She mutters something and people laugh but i can't hear what she says..
-
She puts on a London accent saying "in London".
-
I really love this song. I love the riff in the intro, as well as the chorus, especially the lines, "Magical thinking gets us by; Gotta get by"
-
ok guys, I'm actually going to try this from that one recording we have hahaha
...making some guesses, in which case I'm leaving a (?) after the line.
trying my best, lyrics as of 10-09-2010
----- Fair-weathered Freinds ------
Say you see through the folly
But you do it for the fame
And I'm fighting the jet stream
Drinkin' cheap wine on airplanes
And you're in L.A., not Chicago
Key under mat, I walk the dog, order in, home alone
Found your letter on a full moon Sunday night
Another girl, and you spell, guess he's back for a night (?)
Pour the vodka, and it dulls sharp fights
Breaking words, a diamond band ring
And you didn't mean to do it
So I don't have to believe it
If you didn't really do it
And magical thinking gets us by
You sing for the after show, those candy colored lips
But your age is showing, and you gotta work harder for it
It's always easier with freshmen
And I'm not as clever, if she needed a ride (?)
And you didn't mean to do it
So I don't have to believe it
If we didn't really do it
And magical thinking gets us by
Fair-weathered friends
Fair-weathered friends
Say you see through the folly
But you do it for the fame
And I am fragile as porcelain
Drinking cheap wine on airplanes
And did I ever leave Chicago?
I got your message, glad you're doing well
And you didn't mean to do it
So I don't have to believe it
If we didn't really do it
And magical thinking gets us by
Oo, oo
Say you see through the folly
But you did it for the fame
Say you see through the folly
But you did it for the fame
Say you see through the folly
But you did it for the fame
Say you see through the folly
But you did it for the fame
My fair-weathered friend
-
hey kulp, i can clear some of these up; i was listening quite closely to the lyrics changes once i realized she'd changed the songs.
"pour the vodka, it dulls sharp fights"
and second chorus, which i am absolutely sure of: "and i'm as fragile as porcelain, drinking cheap wine on airplanes / and did i ever leave chicago? / got your message, glad you're doing well"
-
Thanks!
also, do you think she's saying "don't have to feel cheated" instead of "don't have to believe it" ?
I kind of think she does...
-
I think the new version sounds like White Houses somehow.
-
I'm pretty sure it's still just "fair-weather friend" rather than fair-weathered. At the end of one of lines in the new recording it sounded a little like "fair-weathered" but all the rest of them lacked the "ed" sound I thought. Also, "fair-weather friend" is an idiom, so I doubt she'd change it to "weathered" unless she was trying to play with the word in some way to give it a different sort of meaning, but I'm pretty sure that isn't what she did here.
Also, I know you said you were absolutely positive, but it sounds like she said "now you're fragile as porcelain" which I also think adds a more ironic tone to the song when she follows with "drinking cheap wine on airplanes." And in the other recordings she said "you're fragile as porcelain" as well. I do kind of like it saying that she's the fragile one though, and that version definitely suits the tone of the latest recording of it.
I liked the dreamlike quality of it, and liked the changes she made to it a lot! But I think that this version was much more somber and lacked some of the fire it had in the other versions. I hope she maintains a little of her previous ferocity in the album recording.
I love this song. :)

I agree with you about the ferocity. The new version lack the force and power from the debut of the song. The second version is, IMO, much sweeter.

I hear the -ed each time she sings it. perfectly clear. I'm certain it's there.
also, I can't see why it can't be "weathered"
Alanis Morissette says "fair weathered friends" in her song "Knees of My Bees".
-
I agree. I can hear the past tense of he word too.
-
I only heard it maybe the first time she said "fair weather friends" but not at all with the second one. It is possible you're right, but it just doesn't make sense to me. I'm just really am not hearing that "-ed" at all except for on the first time she says "fair-weather" and even that is iffy to me because of all the background noise. Who knows, perhaps my hearing is just off--- we will find out eventually! haha.
-
I love it.
The second verse about Stephen is hilarious.
LOL THIS.
-
That's what I thought too, though I'm wondering whether he is the one that V's pertaining to.
-
I'm kind of bummed she changed the lyrics, they don't sound as natural now.
-
I agree that they aren't as natural, but I think that my favorite new line would have to be:
"I got your message, glad you're doing well."
-
Same here. I like how she seem to send message to somebody through her songs.
Personally, I also like the premier version cause I think it's more candid and honest and creates a more vivid scenery.

I agree, it also just sounds way more natural and fluid. But still love the song of course!
-
When are we going to get a better version of this? :(
-
Soon, I feel. That is, if V will have another show before she release her record. But in the mean time, I am keeping my fingers crossed.
-

Didn't she tell Nicole after the Enlow Hall show that she isn't going to have any more shows until next spring?
:(

:(
Yeah, V did. But hey, miracles do happen. (: I still try to be optimistic about it. But if she won't really do any other shows until spring, then I'd just look forward to the album version of the song.
-
I like the first version better.
I can't get into this new one. Same with "London".
-
I don't have the other version of the song, just the first one and I thank you so much for the lyrics because I was having iusses figuring out a few words here and there. Just by reading the lyrics the flow does seem a lot better with the first one. I Love the way she tells stories and I can picture it all. She is an amazing writer and I also love the glimpse into her life. I have always loved how she writes from the heart and is totally relatable. Love you V!
-
i know this is probably posted somewhere on here already but could someone tell me where i could listen to the 10-09-2010 version?
-
ok, so let's try this again.......
Fair Weather Friends (live 2/14/2011)
please keep in mind she did mess up several times, so these lyrics still may not be the final-what's on the album-lyrics

Thanks for those! I was thinking she just said "friend" though instead of "friends" and it would make more sense since she's just singing about one person in particular..
-
I am sort of feeling the changes to the song. I do prefer the previous version, though I still like the song. I guess I shall see when we get the studio version.
-
The new lyrics are going to take some getting used to for me. It's kind of like the lyric changes in Hands on Me or the dramatic musical arrangement change from live She Floats to album She Floats. We'll have to see how the album version sounds. :)
-

which lyrics she changed in hands on me?
-
which lyrics she changed in hands on me?
The early versions of HOM had "all the constellations shine down on you and me" which was later changed to "shine down for us to see." Small change, but I liked the old lyric better. :)

ooh, right. i've heard she singing those lyrics before. actually i prefer "on you and me" too. hahah
-
I'm REALLY loving the drop in the note she brings to the "believe it" in the performance.
Very melancholic.
-
The new lyrics aren't fantastic.. the "fragile and porcelain" part should have stayed as that two line almost-ending.
-
"Diamonds on your nose?" :/
-
I'm REALLY loving the drop in the note she brings to the "believe it" in the performance.

Absolutely Joey! I hope this stays in the studio version!
-
Wow, it seems to be really mixed reviews on the view on the new version. I love them though. The new version seems to start very low but as the lyrics progress, it gets deeper. I feel like the new lyrics have more emotion in them (more so than the usual amount V puts in her songs), and it hits closer to home with her. I'm really excited for the studio version of this song, and Rabbits On The Run in general.
-
Yeah, I'm just gonna wait until the studio version drops to decide whether or not I like this. For now, I'll stick to the first version. I think it's just the lyrics I'm having a problem with. I don't mind it being more "dark". I just can't take to the lyrics. Same with "London".
-
After listening to the song more I think:
Pour the vodka and you doubt your lies
Breathe the words, diamond's on your nose
might be:
Pour the vodka and it dulls sharp lies
Read the words, diamonds on rings
I still miss the "gotta get by" portion. :( haha
-

I hope that still gets a part in the song, perhaps some backing vocal or choir will chant it on the album..
although Ari didn't sing it when they performed it on V day, who knows... it's still possible.
-
there's not any line with "fair-weather friends" in those lyrics. i think she really should keep the bridge like "my fair-weather friend. my fair-weather friend."
-

I think it will still be there.
it sorta sounded like she was humming it a little maybe. and also right when she was supposed to sing it she messed up, so i think she just stopped herself.
I donno...
-
i hear "pour the vodka and it dulls sharp eyes" (which makes sense in the context of reading something you don't want to believe?)
-
I distinctly remember us getting the lyrics to the song cos divasteph had gotten a photo of the lyrics on the piano!http://forum.nessaholics.com/index.php?topic=12327.60 (http://forum.nessaholics.com/index.php?topic=12327.60)
So I'm gonna have to say sharp knives. :-\
EDIT: Just read the older posts and realized that alot of people are still figuring this out and are not that young to this forum to already know the above information.
But still.
Yeah. I'm sticking with the knives story. It's believably poetic for Vanessa. ;-)

those typed out lyrics were just for that day =P she's dramatically changed the lyrics since then.
I'm going to say it MIGHT be "diamonds on rings" however with everything else I'm still not convinced. haha :P
-
I always sing it as diamond band rings. Ahhh I need a studio version of this song now!
-

I've given up. I don't even have the newer version downloaded yet because I like the older one better. So I'm just going to wait until the studio version comes out to sing it!
-
I know this is really random, but I was listening to the new live version of this song (which I LOVE btw) along with the lyrics, and I just have one little insignificant correction: I'm pretty sure the vodka line is: "Pour the vodka, and it dulls sharp lies."

I'm still using the original lyrics. They were the best, in my opinion. D; "Dulls sharp knives" sounds more poetic than lies. Much more figurative. xD

Ehh, nope.
-
I like the idea of vodka dulling sharp lies and sharp eyes. Things seem less important (lies) when you're drunk, and it also blurrs our vision both figuratively and literally. I think it fits, but as I've said before, I'm not going to make any guesses as to what she is actually singing until I get the lyrics from the official CD in my hot little hand.

I agree haha. but yeah, ill just wait for the lyrics booklet :P
-
Everyone's discussing the 'diamonds' line, I believe it to be 'diamonds on leaves' and hear that when I listen carefully, also backing this up is the introduction from the University performance when she's talking about her friend/aunt moving and writing a farewell speech including a Sylvia Plath poem :)
So yeah
Diamonds on leaves
-
Everyone's discussing the 'diamonds' line, I believe it to be 'diamonds on leaves' and hear that when I listen carefully, also backing this up is the introduction from the University performance when she's talking about her friend/aunt moving and writing a farewell speech including a Sylvia Plath poem :)
So yeah
Diamonds on leaves
That introduction was for Get Good though, not this song...
-
Blushes like a fool* but still, I think it sounds like diamonds on leaves ha :P

eh, no big deal! I hear lots of things, that's why I decided not to guess anymore, lol!

I haven't heard 'Fair Weather Friends' in a really long time. I've mostly been listening to 'Carousel'. I can't wait until the album is released and I get to hear the studio version of it!

Say you see through the folly but you do it for the fame
Im fighting jet streams drinking cheap wine on airplans
Your in LA not Chicago
Key under mat, i walk the dog order in home alone
Found your letter on a full moon sunday night.
Some other girl that hes found has these plans a real life
Pour the vodka and it dulls sharp lies,
Breathe the words, Diamonds and Pearls
I got from the first segment. I prefered dulls sharp knives. I think the first draft of the song was better but maybe vanessa felt it was too close to the bone
-
I know this is really random, but I was listening to the new live version of this song (which I LOVE btw) along with the lyrics, and I just have one little insignificant correction: I'm pretty sure the vodka line is: "Pour the vodka, and it dulls sharp lies."
actually it's fights.
lol :)
Really? Damn, I really liked the sharp lies line too.
I'm still using the original lyrics. They were the best, in my opinion. D; "Dulls sharp knives" sounds more poetic than lies. Much more figurative. xD
I totally agree with you. "Dulls sharp knives" is better because it's better imagery than the more literal versions, AND it's obviously a metaphor for something somebody said to her - whether it's a lie, or an insult, or the letter she found, etc.
I think from now on I'm going to stop listening to really early live performances - because it seems like she tends to change the lyrics around a lot, and it's hard to get used to sometimes.
-
I have to admit I never liked this song until now! WOW!! amazing! ;D
-
album version: (posted before complete high quality album version was heard, or seeing official lyrics)
I think I got it though =P

Say you see through the folly
But you do it for the fame
And I'm fighting a jet stream
Drinking cheap wine on airplanes
And you're in L.A., not Chicago
Key under mat, I walk the dog, order in, home alone
I found your letter on a full moon Sunday night
Some other girl in your spell casting plans for her life
Pour the vodka and it dulls sharp fights
Breathe the words, of diamonds on rings
And you didn't mean to do it
So I don't have to believe it
If you didn't really mean it
Then magical thinking gets us by
Oo
Sing for the after show, those candy colored lips
Your age is showing and you gotta work harder for it
It's always easier with freshmen
I'm not as clever, it should bring you to life
And you didn't mean to do it
So I don't have to believe it
If you didn't really mean it
Then magical thinking gets us by
My fairweather friend
My fairweather friend
Live for the folly
But you did it for the fame
Now you're fragile as porcelain
Drinking cheap wine on airplanes
And did I ever leave Chicago?
I got your message, glad you're doing well
And you didn't mean to do it
So I don't have to believe it
If we didn't really mean it
Then magical thinking gets us by
Gets us by
Gets us by
Say you see through the folly

Yep. Actually, the whole record just incorporate this certain technique, as if the clouds gathering for a storm.
Especially in Hear The Bells
-
I think they say "You're not as clever, but she brings you to life"
im not sure any more! lol
also definitely diamonds on rings.
-
Anyone know the new key for fairweather friend? i've just put it down a third but i'm not sure that it's right. Also, i was really surprised how much i liked the preview. I thought i'd be too attached to the first version i heard but the studio version sounds amazing.
-
It's in the key of A. major.

I've only heard the Amazon preview of this song (mostly since I don't want the album experience ruined for me because of extra long snippets, etc... but I did listen to the premier waaaaaaay too many times XD) and I noticed that the instrumental part right before the "Got your letter..." stanza sounded familiar.
Is it just me, or does that part sound a bit like the chorus of Ameriteen?

Yeah! Good spotting!

Thanks! I think it's pretty interesting how that worked out. I don't think she'd recycle her old unreleased work, though. Probably just a coincidence.

have you ever been drunk? pour the vodka and it dulls sharp eyes.
meaning that you don't "see" as well both literally and physically after drinking. things that you care about while sober, you don't care about or notice when drunk. or it's easier to pretend you don't see things in someone. Alcoholics usually drink to dull pain as well. if you can't see your pain then it's gone, so drink up and you'll have no pain
-
wow Sara you're awesome for knowing that. I'm not much of a drinker and I'm not well versed with alcoholic beverages at all. So, no, that knowledge totally escaped me haha. That seems to make a lot of sense though. :)

lol, glad to be of help. I am not a big drinker either, but I used to in high school. It's easy to lie to yourself while under the influence too.
-
I'll keep that in mind!! I have low alcohol tolerance, so I'll try to see how that works next time ;) -- oh, meaning I get drunk easy. so I'll experiment lying to myself lol.

NOOO don't feel dumb! I could be wrong. I'm not the be all end all. Hey, I'm the one that thought she wasn't saying "thunder" in Carousel, which she clearly does. so, you know, I'm not an authority. It just sounds like it to me, and if that is the case, then that is what it means to me

Yeah, I'm hearing sharp eyes as well.

I know this song isn't "new"... but wow, it just hit me what a beautiful song it is!
Sarah xx
-
IT's probably my favorite song off ROTR. Although, I am sad about some of the changes. The "gotta get by" part was sooo good.
-
This is the only song I've heard so far that doesn't do it for me. I don't know why, I just can't seem to get into it and it seems disjointed to me lyrically. Maybe it will grow on me, who knows.
-
Okay.. So I get the full meaning of the song
My only question is WTH is a Fairweather friend?
Someone who is only with you in the good times?
:-[
no hablar mucho ingles :P

I just listened to the Hollywood Cafe version of this song for the first time in forever, and while I like the lyric changes, she had so much passion in her voice in that version, and I miss it

As previously mentioned, I love this song. But something really bothers me about the studio version. In the first verse, it just feels unnatural to have the guitar strums lead into the short piano bridge. Also, I feel like the chords don't match up evenly; the guitar seems to come in a fraction late after the piano chords kick in. Being both a guitarist and pianist, I feel like the first verse could have been arranged more artistically. From second verse on, however, flawless. :)

where can i find the older version of Fairweather friend and Hands on me? :O can't find it with the original original lyrics. :/
aaaaand can anyone tell me what she meant by "You sing for the after show, those candy colored lips
But your age is showing, and you gotta work harder for it"
Thanks! :)

Said person "entertains" girls, young girls preferably barely legal, as freshmen in college are usually 18-19, after a concert. The age is showing part could be because he is aging and not as attractive to younger girls, or that there are younger men to compete with in the music world (going on the assumption this is about Stephen) so he's got to work harder for their attention. Also, the band is older not as mainstream (though they have a very large loyal fan base) so they have to work harder for that. Also, if we go a different route, he's got to work harder to maintain his boner because he's old. ha! Half joking on that one.

what is the meaning of ' magical thinking ' I saw a video where Vanessa is explaining it but cant find it.
-
what is the meaning of ' magical thinking ' I saw a video where Vanessa is explaining it but cant find it.
The Year of Magical Thinking is a book by Joan Didion about grief and getting through a great loss.
I think magical thinking itself has to do with the brain and that we have these neural pathways that we use over and over in the way of our thinking so that if start to think in a different way we create a new pathway in the brain. If you think it over and over then it becomes a new neural pathway. I think.

Yea it's like telling yourself everything is ok even if it isn't but because you've told yourself over and over, you actually start to believe it.
-

used in this song, I believe it's referring to either not being able to stop loving someone anymore, even though you want to
or... just your mind's way of telling yourself that everything is ok, ~he's still a great guy even though he did all these terrible things, our relationship can still last if we both want it to because i still love him dammit.
he didn't really mean to hurt me when he cheated on me, I didn't really mean to cheat on him, our relationship totally isn't falling apart, we'll get though this, everything is ok......
=P lol
Vanessa has said about this song "I don't want to feel that way anymore"
making magical thinking in the case of this song... a bad thing. In terms of healthy relationships.
-
In the book, she uses magical thinking to get through her grief and loss. While she knows her husband is gone, she doesn't want to throw out his shoes because he may come back and then what would he wear on his feet? so to me, it's more of the loss of the relationship

"Dulls sharp knives" ?
I listened to it the other day, and I remember hearing "eyes" instead of "knives". Does anyone else agree?

dulling the knives...the pain of knives dulling it with vodka to make the pain go away? haha

But with Vodka, if you drink enough of it, your 'sharp eyes' would begin feeling 'dull'. I can't state this, because I'm still underaged, but I know that eyes look glazed after consuming a particular amount of alcohol.

yes, I have the same explanation somewhere else with a little more ..somewhere ..
-
It used to be knives (I saw her perform it live and it was definitely knives) but I have the book and she changed it to eyes. I liked knives better, to be honest - I just thought that was such good imagery.
-
I just listened to the premier version of FWF (the one in LA, where she talked and explained the song first). man, it sounded far from where it is now. What I miss from the old version is the power in the vocals and the strong strings in the verses (which sounded like it's a chugging train).
-
for some reason it never clicked with me that she had read a letter to someone else. I had always thought it was a letter to her (like a breakup letter) until at the Buffalo show she said "never read letters that aren't intended for you." I don't remember her ever saying that before in any live performance I had heard. I connect with the song on a different level now because I too once read a letter that wasn't intended for me and found out my boyfriend at the time was cheating (he went to a different high school so it was very easy for him).
I should go back and listen to the first version again. I'm guessing this is one of the songs that KT tunstal said was too dark!

Why hasn't that one occurred to be before? (but I think that that song was somewhat related to lavender or something)
I think that the candidness of the lyrics here, the rawness of it, is something I never expected. But the best thing about the premier, I must say, is how V threw the words - with power and force. Maybe, there was even a tinge of anger... Or bitterness. Or maybe it's just powerful, not the sweet approach in Rabbits.
-
Maybe I'm completely making this up but I thought it was a letter that she found from Uma Thurman, who Stephan used to date. And they were talking about getting married blah blah blah but Stephen never wanted that for them.

it's funny you mention the power and force and the tinge of anger or bitterness because at the last show I went to there was subtle bitterness and kind of.. smirk/smugness when she sang "your age is showing and you gotta work harder for it." i wish I could get the video up for everyone to see but Im not sure you can tell in the video.
I'm not sure what the gossip is around the letter, just what's come from her mouth. My musing is that it might be a younger woman who was writing to him talking about marriage -- and maybe he indulged this other woman and they were dating while he was still with Vanessa. I liken it to my own experience which was I found out my then boyfriend indulged this girl who he said wouldn't leave him alone. so he planned on "dating" her for a week or so then he planned to break up with her (all this while still being with me).
-
You can heard her saying very clearly and with so much emotion the line " got you rmessage glad you are doing well. " I have noticed it in almost every performance of the song.
-
Isn't it possible that FF may not even be based on a relationship of hers? Who knows, she could be writing about a specific experience of some young woman that she imagined. I try to avoid thinking this is about Stephan now, because once it's playing out loud on shuffle, I immediately think "the stephan song". :P So now, it's just about some chick who found a letter that her lover wrote on a full-moon Sunday, to some other girl with his spellcasting plans for a life. Heheh. ;)
-
It's such a lovely song. I wasn't too into it at first, but I've really started to like it a lot more than I did before! I always find myself humming the beat of the song, it's rather catchy.
I have a question, what does "Fairweather Friend" mean?

I totally understand your initial attitude towards it. If you watch the vid of the premiere of the song, you might fall in love with that version instead :) The ROTR version is still beautiful, but seems more toned down, even a little less passionate than the previous draft.
From what I pick up whenever I hear the term, "Fairweather Friend" refers to a companion (friend or relationship partner) that sticks with you through circumstances that are good and benefit him/her, but drops you like a ball once trouble stirs. I'd say this one of the worst types of friends, merely because he/she is not a friend (by definition) ! Hope that clarifies :)

I'd like to see that one.
And about the gossip, well, there wasn't much about it aside from the lyrics in the first verse before:
Found your letter on a full moon Sunday night
On your knees on ink, you offered a ring, a real life
Pour the vodka, and it dulls sharp knives
Beautiful poetry, but the letter isn't for me
And of course, the second verse, which said it all...
It's always easier with freshman
I'm just as clever, it's not technically cheating
If I didn't really mean it..
It must had been so hard writing candid words like these...
You can heard her saying very clearly and with so much emotion the line "got you rmessage glad you are doing well. " I have noticed it in almost every performance of the song.
...And yet, it's equally hard to write this line too.
I wonder what's in her mind every time she sings it. But I'm happy somehow that she changed the lyrics. I mean, it must be a sign of moving on.

And thank you for the information. I was not sure what the word meant, but the way you described it, it makes a lot of sense now.
