Multiplatinum recording star Vanessa Carlton is getting critical acclaim for a record she collaborated on with Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind, her former boyfriend. That sounds like a bittersweet victory, but she insists it's not like that.
"We're still friends and so very proud of this record because it's our child," says Carlton of her new Heroes and Thieves album. "I think this record was the whole reason we were together in the first place. In some ways, it was like the music was always most important, and in the end, that's probably why we evolved into being friends."
The singer/songwriter/pianist says The Inc./Universal Motown Records' release is her most introspective work yet.
"I'm 27 now, and the past year for me has brought up a lot of questions that come from evolving into a real woman, and the theme of the album is deciphering the heroes from the thieves in a very black-and-white way: What kind of life do I want to lead and carve out for myself? What kind of characters do I want to surround myself with?"
She adds, "I call my songs chapters, and the last chapter, More than This, talks about: What if we could declare right now that I don't need any more than I have - the person sitting next to me, the shoes on my feet, my dog, my career? If I just kind of declare that, in theory, I would experience this bliss. . . . Every song on the album involves those kinds of things."
Carlton just headed out on a limited four-week promo tour. She plans to "shoot the video for the second single Hands on Me in December, then next year, I'll take the band out and do a bigger tour."

I love the way she talks about MTT aswell, this description is cute.
-
i can't breath!
How could many great news come in one day?!!
-
YES!!!!!
DEFINETLEY the right choice.
-
YAY!!!Another tour!!!!!!!
-
Heeeeeell yeah! I can't wait! :D :D
-
cool, thanks for posting!
Another tour with a band sounds great, can't wait!
This is a great interview, i love how she describe More Than This and I like this blurb about evolving and now having to determine who the heroes and thieves are. I like her mentioning things being black-and-white, that is very much how i see things and choosing the people I want to be around based on who *I* want to be. Cool :)

The video should visualise the song though. A video exchange, a subway. Maybe a cruise.. no no just kidding.
But some constellations, or her having a picknick and watching the stars lol.
Some lil' kids chanting 'nanana' would be nice.. and a big bald guy.
Some accurate storyline, dark and telling.
-
Yay, I'm really pleased.
I get the feeling that Nolita Fairytale was never meant to be a big success. It was an internet only release and though it was promoted quite well, it could have had more and was released well before the album came out. I think it's purpose was just to get her face out there a bit more, because it's been so long since she was properly in the public eye. Preparation for the main event, sort of. Now when HOM comes out, which I think is the best "single" on the album, it'll have a bigger push.
I hope bigger tour means the UK too!
-
I hope Vanessa shoot a great music video for HOM...
OMG, HOM will be a HIT! 8)
i bet the album will sell millions of copies after they listen to HOM :D
-
*crosses fingers*
-
HOM and a bigger tour next year!!! Hell yeah! :D
-
AHHHHHHHH!H!H!H!H!H!H!!!!
-
Sooooooooooo freakin awesome! :D

Great news! HOM has a good chance as a single.
Sounds like a full band tour! Honestly, I'm so bored with the acoustic show. Yesterday was the 5th anniversary of my seeing her in LA at the House Of Blues. That's right, it will be half a decade since VC has played a full live show with a full band. I'm confounded as to what she is waiting for, but I am psyched nonetheless.

I've always assumed that money was the issue there. The more people you bring on the road, the more people you have to pay. I could be wrong, though.
-
Yes! HOM is great for second single. I hope she comes to FL for her tour. Enough promotion and I can see H&T going platinum. A tour definitely will help. It's just a shame she can't be a VH1 "You Oughta Know" artist, cause this is her 3rd album.

I know what you mean. She must have her reasons. It certainly is more expensive, but shouldn't be prohibitively so. Having drums is vital. Maybe I'm biased, 'cause it's my instrument of choice, but there's no pulse without drums. NF just doesn't groove without it, IMO.
Crap, I'll play......for free! V....Irv......y'all hear me? When do I show up? :D

I agree. I almost always prefer full band stuff, especially for songs like Nolita that need the drums. I'd really love to see V with a full band! Hopefully that'll really happen next year, like they're saying it will.

this is freaking amazing news!
I just saw her like...last week.
But I'm already excited to see her again.
I hope she does a show in San Diego, since her last one was cancelled.
Screw the full on band, as long as she's there:)
-
yay!! greAT TO SEE it is confirmed as the second singlle :)
-
Enough promotion and I can see H&T going platinum.
don't think so, getting platinum these days is really hard.

mmhmm It is harder to go platinum these days, unless your Justin Timberlake or one of those people. Not saying I don't like him, just saying if your really popular, its really easy. But for V...its really hard bt you never know.
-
Vanessa isn't even wood yet, so all this talk about her going platinum is a bit optimistic.
I'm really interested to see how things turn out after "Hands On Me" is sent out to radio & the promotion for that kicks in though.
I'm really rooting for her.

not necessarily. Pink isn't a huge artist and she went platinum. Corrine Bailey Rae didn't even have any hits on her album, I think. "Like a Star" maybe. Being certified platinum isn't necessarily selling 1,000,000 copies. You just have to ship that much. I think it is better to have false hope than to have no hope at all.
-
Indeed.
-
It is way harder to go platinum these days. Even double platinum. In fact, Pink should have sold way more records after having two #1 pop hits in a row.
-
New video,New tour, me seeing her again, o so happy natalie,
-
ya. im glad to see there is new tour coming. i thought thiswas a bit of a short tour. :D
there is still hope she'll come to canada. :D well at least my area of Canada.lol
-
I still think the video for this single needs to be shot in Tibet. lol
I'd like to see some great inspiring cinematography in one of her videos for a change. :/

White Houses !
I really don't like the White Houses video, and it doesn't feature anything that I'd call amazing cinematography, the set is boring and ugly imo. :/ I find Sophie Muller to be really hit or miss with her work.
I also hate it when they do close ups of her face while she's sitting at the piano and everytime she's making a weird face because she's in the middle of singing. lol It's really unflattering.
Edit -
I'd love to see her work with the director who worked on this music video -

Kazuaki Kiriya is a famous music video director in Japan, he worked on most of Utada Hikaru's videos. He's fluent in english as well.
The song's in Japanese, but it has amaaazing imagery. If he directed a video for Home I'd freak out. lol

Really? I loved the White Houses video and the set. To me it was dead on for the whole Harmonium aesthetic, but I like most of Sophie Mullers work.
There is some amazing imagery in the video you posted. I wouldn't mind at all if V worked with that director. :)
I'm really looking forward to the release of HOM. I think Francis Lawrence(directed What You Waiting For?, Goodbye To You, I'm Like A Bird), or Marc Webb (directed Dare You To Move, Helena, and Fidelity) could make a great video with her. I'm hoping for the video to be dark and haunting; I've always pictured the vid to be at night. :)

Marc Webb is great, he'd be an excellent choice for HOM. :D

I was honestly listening to that song on my iPod 15 minutes before i clicked on that link. I didn't know you were into Jap music.
It's good to know that i'm not the only one who hated the White Houses video. With so much imagery in the lyrics, it could have turned out amazing, instead, we ended seeing her in a brown room, and the outside of the room looked very amateurish. I don't see why a lot of people are in love with the video.
This is another Jap song called Precious, by Yuna Ito. The video is simple breathtaking, don't know who directed though.

But I have nothing against the NF music video.

I love Japanese music! Well... namely Utada, she's my favorite artist. lol She's working on another English language album, which is awesome. So she'll be hitting Western air waves again in the future. :D
-
cool. cant wait to see the video
-
I read on Pulse, that the song is going for adds in February?! Are they nuts?! The song should get send to radio next month for real!
-
Ahh, I agree about the White Houses video. That song is so great and I was extremely excited for the video. It was a bit of a let down.
I can't wait to see what this video's gonna look like.
Oh and question. In the Nolita Fairytale video, when the red piano was smashed or whatever, that didn't really happen right? I mean she wouldn't ruin that piano? I hope it was like a "stunt double". :o tehehe.
the 'piano' was fake.
