I guess because it's about a girl who leaves home early, gets pregnant by a friend (that's why the: "it's hard to know that u're a part of me...") and then realizes what her mom tried to warn her about life, ever after.
I guess that's what spring street is about. At least that's what I interpreted of it.

I just thought the daughter symbolized the cycle of life and learning; having a daughter (as well as the other experiences mentioned in the song) made her understand what her mother told her when she left home.
