Title: Reccomend me a new artist or 3...
Post by: Moogs21 on January 02, 2008, 01:33:22 pm
WANTED: A new artist(s?) for me to listen to.

Vanessa-like... I would prefer it to have decent piano music, possibly with any classical instrument. Doesn't matter if it's a guy or girl.

I like... Vanessa (obviously). I like some Ben Folds, but he sometimes annoys me with all his cussing... I don't mind cussing, unless it's in excess where it's not necessary. I think my favorite songs by him are "Zak and Sara" and "Landed". I used to kind of like Michel Branch, but I hear she's headed country. Oh well, never a huge fan. I semi-like Graham Colton. However, a lot his music seems to sound the same... It's okay, he's new. I do like "Forget About You". I liked Sara Bareilles's "Love Song", but I barely enjoyed the rest of the cd. I liked old school Nelly Furtado. I've been trying out Regina Spektor, but I haven't made a full decision on her. I'm leaning towards no..

Can be upbeat or not... Poppy is okay, as long as the artist has more than just that... Variety is good. I don't care if they are popular or not, and I don't care what era. I have tended to like single artists as opposed to bands, but if they are good, I don't care. However, bands I have liked include (old) Goo Goo Dolls, Yellowcard, (a little) Coldplay.

I do NOT like R&B, rap, or extremely twangy country. I like music where people sing... Sounds funny to say, but I guess one must specify these days.

Anyway, I have been searching for a few months, but I just cannot find anything. (Why can't there be more Vanessas out there?)
Please help me! Thank you.
(yes, x posted, but I figure I'd get a bigger span of people.)

Here are my suggestions (which I am making because I think your taste is similar to mine):

Imogen Heap
Charlotte Martin
Aslyn
Eisley
Meg & Dia
Hanson (seriously, give them a chance)
Shannon Thomas (that's me, haha)

Oh, and Michelle has definitely gone country (the band is called The Wreckers), but still writes really good songs that are barely country at all sometimes.  The only thing that pisses me off about it is the fact that apparently now she has a fake country accent when she TALKS - wtf?!

Well, I sort of like Sara Groves, and she's compared to Vanessa Carlton (it's Christian music, so I don't know who would like that.)

ah Nine Inch Nails! Trent Reznor uses some piano....not all the time. But he does once in a while. Try to find the song La Mer. Its def. piano as well as The Frail. Those are more like insturmentals but there are a few songs that are like songs that feture some piano in them. oh oh def. listen to Something I can Never Have.

A Fine Frenzy was described as having a "Vanessa Carlton like quality" in a magazine. So, i dunno. A Fine Frenzy is sorta dull at times, but she has a few good songs.

Teddy Geiger is also pretty good. i've only heard of VC in that list, but he has a very good voice, and his songs are like a breath of fresh air.

Title: Okay, this is killing me...anything similar to BNN?
Post by: MetalSubstance on May 05, 2008, 06:16:49 am
Hi all,

I fell completely in love with the Be Not Nobody CD when it first came out in 2002.  The melodies were some of the most passionate, emotional, and compelling that I've heard in a long time! The only other CD that was able to even remotely compare was Tori Amos's Little Earthquakes.

Unfortunately, Vanessa's other two albums did not move me as deeply as her first one, as she seemed to abandon her style to become more lighthearted (especially on Heroes and Thieves).  At the same time, Tori Amos changed her style as well since Under The Pink -- even though I loved all her works between that album and To Venus And Back, none of them packed the punch like Little Earthquakes did.  (Don't get me started on Strange Little Girls and beyond...)

So, are there any albums out there as powerful and emotional as the two albums that I've mentioned?  I know that there are a bunch of female-fronted heavy metal bands today that play in that passionate and compelling symphonic style, but I'm not looking for metal bands.

Thanks,
--Metal Substance

BNN est BNN est BNN... but if I was to pick the closest thing I know it'd be;
