i totally agree. i still think white houses was her best video and that was sophie muller. all the videos mark and vanessa make together tend to be a little boring with little emotion.

I agree as well. Sure she likes to collaborate and stuff but I mean he did not direct WH and I loved WH its my fav! I think they should have gotten a fresh mind for this vid, someone who is not used to vanessa themes and stuff.

i wouldn't say "just" a pianist envying a dancer, it really is more than that. Seeing that you're a nessaholic, I would think that you would understand the true symbolic importance of that video!

As long as it's not as indie looking as Nolita I'm fine with it. But please no odd colours and all that like in Nolita. It fit the song.
But HOM needs to be as mainstream as possible, Nessa needs to breakout. It's time for some recognition.

I think the average music video turnaround is a week, two maximum these days. So Vanessas vid should be out within the month.
Id imagine theyd rush it out for Valentines day. Get some momentum in song requests for dedications.
If they dont release the video a week or so before valentines, then they will have lost a big tool in generating gumption.

Don't underestimate it. The problem with Nolita Fairytale was that it was an oddly constructed song which had no vantage point.
Hands On Me is a deeply romantic song that will have much greater connection with both men and women. It's the first Carlton single since A Thousand Miles which has possibilities to appeal to both sexes.
Ordinary Day was about a girl's story.
No song was ever as feminine as Pretty Baby.
White Houses was a girls story again.
I wish Afterglow and Who's to Say had proper releases, they could have taken off. But Hands On Me, Fools Like Me, Heroes and Thieves and More than This all have huge single potential.
I truly think if anythings going to take off for her, This is it.

I think people bring it up so often because they want to see Vanessa succeed. If this album stays under the radar like it currently is, who knows how much longer she will be able to stick around in the industry. So I think people just CARE which songs get released. And sometimes people DO state legitimate reasons they think a certain song should be released. For example, I said I think Spring Street would do better than Hands On Me because it has a more catchy hook and lyrics that are easier to relate to. Honestly, not that you care, but I think once again HOM is going to weigh in on the side of too much specificity (talking about temp work/ indie show / Dali Lama) and not enough general relatability. Same thing with Nolita Fairytale. Know why ATM did good? A great hook & pretty much generic love/life lyrics. It's not saying these are her best songs or anything, just what people think will sell for her ... which in the long run means what will get us more songs in the future.

Thats a good statement but i dont think that Vanessa is looking for the sales and catchiness that many other artists think that a song requires. I think Vanessa is about her true experiences and making her songs stories [like the theme of H&T takes after German Folklore and fairytales] and chapters in a book as she described them in concert, she is one of a kind and a true artist.

I understand what portions.for.foxes is saying because it really seems, in any thread you go into, there is some discussion about singles and after a while it gets extremely repetitive. I think it is much better to kinda stay on the topic of the thread, especially if there is an existing thread for that topic already.
But, I completely understand what you're saying too Noelle. The reason why we're all talking about singles is because we care so much about the
success of this album. I think most of us feel a deep connection with V's music and we want her to keep making records for a long time.

I agree that there is way too much single discussion. It also annoys me when people are like OMGGGGGGGG THIS SHOULD BE THE SINGLE CUZ IT MY FAVE!!!! If there was intelligent discussion about the single based on what would honestly be the best fit for the radio, fine, I wouldn't be so annoyed. But teenies are running around yelling about how their favorite song should be the next single because it'sthebestsongi'veeverheardomg... anyone who thinks that More Than This is going to be on the radio because it's the "best" is sadly mistaken. Same for Home. The single is not chosen based on what is the "best" song on the album, it is what is the "best" song for RADIO.

i love vanessa dearly and her music since i first heard ATM. but, she is so over commercial images with this album. im just worried that if she doesnt come out with another good single she will be another one hit wonder and her songs will be released on those info-mercial compilation cd sets twenty years from now and she will only be remembered for a thousand miles...
i think fools like me would have been a better single

Anyway, it's true that ATM was V's biggest and most memorable hit but Ordinary Day was a hit as well. Some people know her for OD more so than ATM, obviously not the case for most but still.
On the topic of the video...Any guesses as to when we'll see it? I wonder if they'll put up a banner on the official site like they did for NF. I hope it's not too long.

I think the reason so many are worried about the Hands on Me single and are voicing their choices for singles is because Hands on Me just doesn't seem marketable to any audience, yes the lyrics are awesome but the music is just something I feel would put off many mainstream music fans. I hope the video is able to catch the attention of many, I really do, but at the moment I'm just not optimisitc.
My personal choice for a next single would be This Time, the music composition is heartfelt but also a bit attention grabbing and I do think the song can connect with a lot of adults. While all of Vanessa's songs are written well, her music composition is just too different. But regardless I just hope we get a next single.

I agree your thought about HOM being somewhat not marketable to any audience, but I prefer Fools Like Me to This Time coz the cathyness of the song and it's radio friendly as well...Either way, any next single would be just great... :)

HOM is one of the catchiest songs on the record. The melody just grabs you.
It will for sure make a better impact than Nolita.

I'm a huge fan of both Emily Haines and Metric, and I enjoy Broken Social Scene, but I'd like to point out that they are indie artists on indie labels. Thus, their sales barely make a dent in those of many major-label artists. Vanessa is a major-label artist, so you can't really compare her record sales to some of the artists you mentioned.
I do think Vanessa would do extraordinarly well as an indie artist, though.
Anyway, I'm dying to see the HOM video and hear about any progress made with it. I wish I'd found out about the casting earlier; my brother and his wife (both extremely attractive people) live in LA!

I think that V has a lot more of a chance of blowing up today, because look at Feist! 1234 was just in this commercial and it suddenly caught fire. If V becomes one of those Vh1 you oughta know artists, she'll be so popular. Ingrid michaelson also got so much popular and she's not a dance/club pop artist.
So, V definitely has a real chance to become so popular again. just keep pushing with a lot of adverts and stuff.

It's OK. Not a blockbuster. I'm beginning to wonder if the "video exchange" refers to You Tube or even a dating site(witness all the different couples at the end).

This has got to be her simplest and lowest-budget video ever :(. The first half is amazing but then in all the scenes she just stays in one place and that's really boring. When she reaches to the light, it would be nice if someone pulls her out of that room and into the forest. Again, the idea of people touching each other would be more interesting if they are in somewhere else.
I love the grass, forest and the taking skirt part :D She sings the "oh-eh" thing herself, amazing!!!
She looks like Alanis Morissette when the guy first touched her.

I really loved the outdoor parts where she reaches into the grass and when she has her hands up to the light and everything. i thought it was beautiful. and the video really got to me at the end where they have all the couples. i think that made the video absolutely fantastic. i loved it.
this better be on VH1. it deserves to be.

I can't decide which video I like best, but I honestly really liked it.
I could feel what she was feeling through the video, it really grabbed me from the beginning, very well done.
