So I've listened to hands on me like a billion times... I knew it was about a love story and that jazz, but I did realize this until now.
HOM is about buddhism!
Like reincarnation of a couple throughout different lifetimes. That's so ingenious... it's like when Third Eye Blind wrote Semi-Charmed Kind of Life about crystal meth. It was so obvious but no one even processed it.
Not saying that Buddhism is comparable to crystal meth.
Or that this whole thing wasn't completely obvious to everyone from the get-go.
Or if this even makes sense.
Okay I'm done. ha

I didn't understand :-/

I think the only thing that relates to Buddhism is the fact she says "I see the dalai lama, i feel him blessing me".
Or something like that.
I dont notice anything else with it.

Me neither.

me neither....

I do understand what you mean migmitch :D

i understand. hopefully the music video will show some of this to make it clearer for those who dont understand it.

Yeah, I made that connection, too, but it's not EXACTLY all about Buddhism, for me.

same here!

I kind of see what you are saying. It does sound like she is talking about reincarnation:
"We cross the deepest oceans" Some marine mammal
"Constellations shine down on" Maybe a star in the sky?
I dunno, that's all I have for now.

I think the weirdest line is "cargo across the sea." She IS, saying that, right? To me, cargo kinda implies that they snuck on to a ship together...

same....it does have a theme of buddhism throughout the song, but i dont think its themed around it.

Ya. I don't even know what Buddhism teach about life or anything. But I think Vanessa could relate the song to it in some way, coz she did mention about the Dalai Lama. She wouldn't have written something if she hadn't had reasons for that, right?

If you think about it, HOM appears to say a lot about faith, both religious and interpersonal. Faith healers "put their hands on" the sick to heal them. Similarly, faith goes a long way in relationships. It's as if the character in the song is asking for someone to have faith in her and that the relationship will work, just as someone has a religious faith, get me?
I seem to remember reading some quotes from the Dalai Lama about interpersonal relationships; maybe that is where the song inspiration comes from.
I like juxtaposing the two kinds of faith; in a higher power and also romantic love or a relationship. There are many parallels.

Very nice! And the video even played out your theory, with the changing "couples."
Interesting.
