FitCeleb, singer and songwriter Vanessa Carlton, 27, recently spoke with Shape Magazine about her lifestyle as an avid runner, jogging up to five miles six times a week.
"I have only so many hours in the day, so when I exercise, I want to sweat hard. But I also think it's helpful to relax," says Vanessa.
Here are some of Vanessa's strategies to keep both her body and brain in top condition:
Let your environment inspire you: "A few months ago I went to India to learn how to meditate. But because I'm used to moving all the time, I found it difficult. So when I got home, I compromised with walking meditations. Everyday I wander the streets with my dog, Lord Victor, pausing to jot down lyrics to songs in my notebook."
Take on a challenge: "In 2005, a friend of mine who volunteers with Musicians on Call, a nonprofit organization that brings music to hospitalized patients' bedsides, asked me to run the New York Marathon for the charity. I knew training would be hard, but I decided to go for it. The race itself was as much a mental test as a physical one. It helped me see what I'm made of; I'd definitely do it again."
Share your experience: "It's hard to find mentors, but when you do, it can pay off big time. Mine is Stevie Nicks, whom I met a few years ago. She taught me to reach out to younger female artists and help them find their way. I'm a big advocate now of women helping each other and exchanging ideas. It makes everyone better in the end."
:] just more V presence on the net these days.

I'm to embarrassed to run, I've always been an shy person and when i tried in the past i feel like everybody's watching me. So i guess i'll just have to stick to dancing in the living room .

I feel the same way!
Besides, I hate running. I'm jealous of the people who actually enjoy it. How do you enjoy such torture?!

I'm embarrassed as well, thats why i do it at like 9 at night so no one will see me.

Hmmm night runs? I've never even thought about that...It just might work~ :D I'm sick of not being able to wear the clothes i want, im 5"3' and 158 it sucks. But the excercise has always been the problem it's pretty easy for me to loose weight but i just can't do as much as i want to so i just end up gaining it all back.
-
I am about 196 and I am 5'7 I don't want to like lose weight were I am super skinny I just want to be a good size. I like how V can run so much. Just last Monday I went running on the mile path right outside my house thats in the park. And boy was it hard. The last time I ran a mile was December for P.E.... so I most def. have to get back in shape. But I hate running when there are people outside which is like always b/c there is always at least someone also running/walking or is there with their dogs and what not. I hate running when there are people around.

i feel so bitchy and skanky when i say this, but i am finally getting to be the weight i want! I need to lose like 15 more lbs and ill be there. im like 6'1 and i want to be 135. and i learned some bad news, the high fashion men's models are getting skinnier, nooooooooooooo!!!!!! now i have more pressure. and my mom thinks im anorexic.
-
wow... an actual post cofirming that she DID come to India...
-
I'm glad to know that she did, i put a thing about it on my site a few months ago.

I run with my dad and we run for five mintues, walk for one, etc for 3 kilometres, and we'll be running for longer and faster later once I get better. It's a pretty slow process, but we usually run 3 times a week or else it's like starting over again. You also have to stretch before and after the run.

This just got even more excited for TRACK SEASON! Yay! Im still nervous though becuase I was doing middle school track for 3 years but now its highschool... I think im going to do cross country.

I hate running. I would prefer to walk, but I don't do either. It's horrible. As a kid I did gymnastics constantly and was so fit, now I'm skinny but I am not in shape at all and I wish I would get motivated to do it but last time I started doing some Yoga last week I pulled a muscle or pinched a nerve or something, so now I am recovering lol
