Heroes & Thieves released today
Tuesday, 09 October 2007
Vanessa Carlton's new album Heroes & Thieves with Stevie's cameo on the song "The One" was released today. If you're expecting a thunder-stealing backup vocal (like the one on Marilyn Martin's version of "Sorcerer" from 1984), you'll probably be a little disappointed with Stevie on "The One." The vocal is a little understated and gravelly, but the harmonies are warm and fuzzy. Vanessa has a voice that's more suited towards musical theater (not my favorite genre), but I can appreciate what Stevie sees in her. Here is a girl who can sing, write and play a musical instrument. In the production-driven world of today's recordings, she's clearly the outcast...and the underdog. So I'm rooting for her, even if I'm not a big fan of her music.

this isnt cool....poor Vanessa...she is trying her best....she is not an 'underdog' or an 'outcast'
-
well if you do it in terms of like sales, she is the underdog. But if you do it in terms of talent, she is most def. not an underdog. But we are bias b/c we are her fans. Outsiders that are not fans, might not appreciate Vanessa as much as we do.

yeah...i get ur point...but still we dont say bad things abt Stevie now do we? :?

I think you took the comment about being the underdog all wrong. Vanessa is the underdog cause clearly she is more talented than what mainstream 'music lovers' like and can appreciate. I don't think the comments made above were at all negative...basically saying that Radio and Media don't appreciate real talent, and because V is so talented she doesn't get the credit she deserves...

I agree with that and the terms of sale making her an underdog, her talent doesn't.

I know. I was just saying. =]

I'm not saying that what they said isn't true, I know we're more biased towards Vanessa, but those were kind of personal opinions and they kind of had a negative connotation.

Thats what I got from it.

i actually think this is quite positive. :]

I dont think her voice is musical theatre. Musical theatre has alot more vibrato and i appriciate it becuase i do theatre though I wouldnt listen to it on my ipod.
-
I've done musical theater my whole life, that isn't Vanessa isn't that, she could be if she sang differently, but her voice is a different style naturally.
-
Vanessa is a far cry from musical theatre. I also have done it for many years, and...haha she's just...nothing like that.
-
As a huge Stevie Nicks fan myself, I'd have to say that the online group is torn half and half.
There's the group who loves Vanessa (like myself) and there is the group who does not understand what Stevie sees in this girl.
As far as the comment made above, I'd take it as positive. Heck, he critisized Stevie, (nasally voice on The One) before he said anything about Vanessa. Calling someone the underdog is not a negative comment. If anything it's something nice, in a way saying he hopes she pulls through and gets the recognition she deserves.
-
We also have to understand that Stevie's music is different from Vanessa's. And some of these people are die hard fans. haha

Are you kidding? When H&T came out this board was flooded with people saying that her vocals on The One were terrible and that they ruined the song and that she sounded like a goat, etc. etc. etc.
People are allowed to not like Vanessa and I think what that poster on Stevie's board did was nice.

VERY TRUE! Oh my god, we're hypocrites. Well actually..not so much...WE. Not everyone didn't like Stevie's vocals. haha
-
Yeah we ripped it apart when it first was released

Heck I ripped it apart. lol. To this day I still think it's much better without Stevie on back up.

I LOVED HER VOICE AND STILL DO...SHE'S GREAT AND SO UNIQUE! :D

Same here dood, I thought Stevie added an element to the song that is way better than when she just sings it by herself. It's such an honor that Stevie was even in able to be a part of that song.
-
It took me a while to like her input on the songs vocals, but it has grown on me. :D
-
To be honest I didnt like her vocals on it at fisrt... But I now think that they are great. :)
-
I'm the biggest Stevie fan alive, and I still love Vanessa, too!
It's just two different styles. The older Stevie fans don't seem to like how Vanessa sounds so youthful, and writes 'naive' lyrics, and prefer Stevie's rough rock and roll sound. I personally think it's the best of both worlds. Stevie's my faaavorite person in the world, but I like how I can listen to Vanessa and get music that's easy to listen to, and just lay back and relax with.

Whenever I force my mom to listen to Vanessa, she always says that she sounds like she would do well in musical theatre. Although I think it has more to do with the fact that she uses a lot of string instruments in her songs, rather than her actual voice (my mom has actually cited the instruments she uses in her songs as one of the reasons). I happen to be a big fan of musical theatre and I don't think Vanessa's voice would fit well on broadway. However I can see why people would compare her music to musical theatre.

We talked about this on a different thread I like musical theatre and do musical theatre but Vanessa is far form all the Vibrato and stong voice.
