Title: Recommendations for movies?
Post by: charmedguy18 on February 14, 2009, 05:08:39 pm
I want some movie titles to download tonight to watch tomorrow so any suggestions?
Here's the list of movies I've liked a lot in the past to give you an idea, but I will say that I do love foreign films (ones that aren't pointless, which many are), "deep" films (ones that just stir up your emotions), psychological thrillers, non-stupid-non-overly-violent horror movies. Scary movies are my absolute favorite. But I can't stand a stupid scary movie (examples: Saw, Hostel, The Unborn). If the premise and story lines are compelling then I'd probably like it. I also love gay love stories haha. (Brokeback wasn't THAT great compared to a little-known movie called The Bubble, but they both were just phenomenal)... Yeah. I just like really really good movies. A violent, yet compelling horror I DID like, for example, was The Hills Have Eyes (the sequel was mediocre, but really badly done), though it's not like one of my favorites of all time.

Here's my fav movie list (Look up some if you don't know them. Trust me, I know good movies. I will bold my all-time favorites.

    Children of Men
    Brokeback Mountain
    The Abandoned
    The Forgotten
    When a Stranger Calls

    Juno
    Mighty Heart
    Requiem For a Dream
    The Last Kiss
    50 Pills
The Craft
A Home At the End of the World
    Pulse
    Transformers
    1408
    A Tale of Two Sisters
    Pan's Labrynth
    Cecil B. Demented
    Freedom Writers
    Harry Potter
    The Omen
    À l'intérieur (Inside)
    The Girl Next Door
    The Happening
    The Strangers
    The Bubble
    Dorothy Mills
    Blindness
    Aparecidos (The Appeared)
    2:27

I'm sure there are others. But I probably just didn't list them all.
Thanks my darling loves!

Pi (by the same guy that did Requiem for a Dream)
Pan's Labrynth (foreign film w/ subtitles)
Fight Club
The Wrestler
American Psycho
Sin City

Those are just the ones that I can think of off the top of my head.

I rather like Mirrormask and the 1999 made-for-tv-movie of Alice in Wonderland starring Tina Majorino. Such an awesome movie. I agree with anyone who says Stranger Than Fiction is good. It is.

Um..oh, and Igby Goes Down. I'm just glancing through my DVD collection and I realise that I own a lot of movies that I like, but do not really love. Also I have a lot of television shows. :S

EDIT: ack! I just read Ms.Arwen's first post on this thread: YES Pan's Labyrinth is SUCH AN AWESOME MOVIE how could I forget it. Seriously, y'all should watch it.

Memento was the first one I thought of, too. If you haven't seen it you will love it. It is such a great movie.

Umm...

Hard Candy (psychological thriller / sort of horror / REALLY well acted -- the girl from Juno when she was a few years younger, awesome performances)

Once (Really good, moving and not at all cliche love/friendship story set to some also really good irish folk/indie music)

In the Valley of Elah (Just saw this come on HBO. Slow at first but really good acting from Tommy Lee Jones & Charlize Theron. Addicting, definitely worth watching... sort of a mystery / suspense / drama with a military backdrop)

Hansel & Gretel (Can be found under foreign *korean* films on watch-movies.net. A really neat, surreal horror/suspense type movie. Not gorey or dumb. Wacky at times, the end is really worth watching. Some VERY good child actors and a really inventive story. Subtitled but very good quality)

El Crimen Del Padre Amaro (A drama about a spanish priest who commits some... er, hefty sins. The young priest is Gael Garcia Bernal. I first saw this in my college spanish class. WOW what a good movie. Def recommended. Also subtitles)

El Orfanato / The Orphanage (A really cool little ghost story sort of reminiscent of The Others. It is also a Guillermo del Toro film (aka Pan's Labrynth). Very fun to watch)

The Devil's Backbone (Another really good Guillermo del Toro film. One of his earlier movies. Both of these are subtitled. Both ghost stories. Fun stuff.

The Pianist - about a Jew in the holocaust. Subtitled (the best films always are!). So sad.

Amelié - again subtitled, about a French girl fascinated with love.

You guys are fabulous!
I am going to download a number of these movies for sure!
I saw a movie called La Habitación de Fermat or Fermat's Room recently, and it is EXCELLENT. I recently have realized that IFC films are usually pretty good!
Not all of them, but every one that I've seen except one have been absolutely phenomenal.
2:27 is probably my favorite movie and no one has ever heard of it. Highly recommended.
If you have Time Warner Cable, then I'd recommend looking at their IFC films. The ones I've listed (except the one I JUST mentioned) should still be in the selection that they have.
I love that I started this thread.
Keep posting great movies you guys!

Oh yeah, I've seen Perfume. Really strange film. I'd watch it just because it's interesting, but it's pretty disturbing and I'm not sure I loved the end.

I can imagine it being like a bit gross... But I caught it on cable... and it was censored. That is if they did make it "uncensored".

I loved the score for the movie though.

it has an official imdb page.....its set for release sometime in 2010 and its staring naomi watts.

wack!  ill still see it but if its anything like that shiteous physco remake they did with anne hech....yikes.

i can't believe they are also making a scream 4...pretty rediculous that all the main characters(neve cambell, courtney cox arquette and david arquette) are only making small cameos.......

the scream trilogy is fine the way it was...another one ruined by hollywood.

im glad that the original producers and POSSIBLY wes craven(director) might sign on in the near future....but some movies just need to have an ending....the 3 films were great...everything came full circle..ya know.

I loved it. It was a bit dragged-out, though. And the co-star... I forget his name, but he was Milk's boyfriend for a while... He is really fucking hot. Haha

Edit: James Franco.
Sexy.
Mine.

Okay I have a suggestion for a movie for everyone else, then.

There's a movie called C.R.A.Z.Y. that I just saw the other day. It was absolutely AMAZING. It's a gay-interest movie, but even straight guys that don't like watching gay guys making out and stuff would like it. The reason being there's no homosexual contact throughout the movie, although it's insinuated. That was the only thing I really wish it DID have. But really, it was one of the best movies I've ever seen. It's a French-Canadian film. I didn't know that before I watched it because of the title. But if you decide to watch it you'll understand why it has an English name...

Good, goood, GOOOOD movie!
