Looks like an album called "Icon", wtf?? lol

Okay so I believe I do know the answer to my question. I realized the label was A&M which was her ex-(ex) label. I noticed that there's a lot of "Icon" albums which basically are "greatest hits" from artist under contract with A&M like Bryan Adams, Janet Jackson. Sheryl Crow has one coming out January 4th also... Looks like we'll have a greatest hits album by V... How weird! Do you think we might get some extra tracks??  :D

hmmm, do you think it could possibly contain unreleased songs such as Best Behavior or Wave Goodbye?
....what about the first single off of Rabbits on the Run?

well, I'm excited to find out!!  :)

^ I don't think so. If it's being released by A&M, then surely they don't own the rights to use those songs you just listed seeing as they were written & recorded after she left the label?

http://www.onamrecords.com/New_CDs_DVDS.html (http://www.onamrecords.com/New_CDs_DVDS.html)
If you scroll down to the bottom, it says it's a "Best of Vanessa Carlton" E-album.

I wonder how much of her work A&M has rights to, and I wonder if Vanessa has any say in this release.

This site gives a bit more detail on what we can expect.

http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/icon-series-launched-by-universal-music-enterprises-100254019.html

it says they feature 12 tracks. I am sure we can expect A Thousand Miles, Ordinary Day, Pretty Baby, and White Houses. So thats 4 songs. I hope the rest are not just live/acoustics. We pretty much have some of those already. I wouldn't mind more, but we all know what we want the rest of those songs to be : )

Which means new Nessa stuff almost like now! I mean... NO WAITING!!!

Post by: Rabbits_on_the_run on December 04, 2010, 12:14:48 am
Thanks for posting that there will be 12 songs! If they only use albums tracks it will have half if each record, ridiculous for a greatest hits record... Since A&M don't own masters of V's songs after 2005 we could still expect to see some previously unreleased tracks like Quail Dude Squaw or Wave Goodbye but sadly I don't think it will happen. We'll probably have a majority of BNB tracks with like 3 remixes/live versions from
both ATM and OD then White Houses, maybe Who's To Say, Private Radio..

I wish they would be an encore version of the songs.

What are we talking about here? Do you people really think the album it's entirely Vanessa? Or it's just a complilation cd with the best of A&M? Cause tbh, the first thing does not make sense to me, i would love to tho, of corse.

Martin. this http://www.jr.com/product/music/pm/_1697805/ is the Sheryl Crow one, it has the same typography, so idk, it may be?

Huh that's neato! I do wonder, if it will be only songs from the first two albums and not the third? :/ Meh I dunno how the whole record company thing works but I'd think that her first record company won't be able to have the rights for the 3rd album right? Not sure who she was with for the 2nd.

A&M and the Inc are both part of Universal so it wouldn't surprise me if they could slap a few H&T tracks on the album. Regardless I'm really excited! If we get that 'unreleased EP" we've been waiting for by the frickin' fourth I'll just about DIE. : )

I really hope there would be unreleased songs.

It's our only hope that we hear those unheard songs.

Quail Dud Squaw/Quailude/Morning Sting/Wave Goodbye.

Gahh. There's just a lot.

morning Sting is one of my favorite Nessa-Songs and it's from the A&M-era. We know there is a studio version (with brass OMG o.o) and I'd die of happiness if we get to hear this song on this Icon-thing. I keep my finger crossed that they pull out all the stuff they own the rights of and we never got to hear ^^

I might email them and see what the deal is. Ask them to put some unreleased stuff on. Doubt they'll respond and if they do, I can't see them doing it unless they're planning to. But it's worth a shot.

It's kinda sad, we're getting all sorts of blotchy info about the album.:-\

Guys, trust me: there'll be no unreleased things. This is just a way for A&M to get all the cash they can from the tracks they legally own. It's basically a compilation of her songs, it's not an official greatest hits. She won't promote it (probably doesnt even know it exists) and she won't release anything new on them.

I'm kind of surprised that V hasn't tweeted about this, but you guys might be right in that SHE doesn't even know about it. I don't see how they could make a "Greatest Hits" Album from just the two records that they own. They definitely need to put some unreleased material on there. Oh, you know what bugs me about the cover? It doesn't even have V's signature Victorian lettering. It's just so..... generic. Plus, it basically just reused Harmonium's picture. Ughhh. I want to be optimistic about this, but in reality, I think it's just going to be recycled tracks from BNB and Harmonium.  :-\

I agree. It really shows that V doesn't have anything to do with this record. None of her creative markings are evident.

And I agree with her not twitting about it. I guess it's just a way for the record company to make money?

But hey, this would promote her too. And the timing's right, since it's being released just a couple of months before ROTR.

Vanessa doesn't need to know as far as they're concerned. They own the rights to the songs, so they can do whatever the hell they like with 'em. The good thing is that she'll get paid in royalties, so that's cool.

Maybe will include som unreleased songs from BNN and Harmonium, like morning stings and that kind of stuff, I mean, she don't have a lot of singles out, just 7 if we count private radio, so I believe that the company could include 3 songs from each album and 3 unreleased or include 4 of each album and still with the same stuff we have.

I think everyone is over thinking this release.  They are throwing out little 'best of' releases for nearly artist. I believe it's going to be in eco-friendly packaging and probably cost like 5 dollars.  V's will probably get releases digitally only.

She has no control over this and probably has no clue that it's being released.....I could care less about any 'greatest hits' they put together...it's a $$ plow for sure.

What are they going to do?

Include 3 songs from BNN and 3 from Harmonium?  I don't think they would release anything that we haven't heard yet.

This is a waste of time..let's just look forward to ROTR.

These are the kind of crap releases you sometimes see for $5.99 in drug stores and gas station mini-marts.  A few obvious tracks, maybe a forgettable live version of a hit track rather than the studio one to rip you off further.  Next to no artwork, pics are usually outtakes from photo sessions with cruddy graphics that any one of us could do a better job at.  No liner notes.  Compiled by some unpaid intern who probably could not care less/knows next to nothing about VC.

I'd like to think some unreleased stuff might be on there, but I'm guessing they might maybe.....maybe....throw something like Swindler on there, but that is wishful thinking.

Something like this concerns me, because in the age of the vanishing physical CD, for Vanessa this release could effectively replace BNN/Harmonium in 99% of stores altogether, but what are you gonna do?

Just my opinion, this is probably nothing to be happy about. Vanessa, if she knows about it at all, is most likely not jumping for joy at the idea of her catalogue being consolidated, and in any event, her future lies in her next release, not some retro record company cash grab.  And, like a few of you, I hope this does NOT delay the new album.  Record companies pull this crap all the time.

And, what genius of them to release these in friggin' January, when these budget compliations would probably have sold better now, during the holiday season.

Whatever.

Why would it delay the new album? Vanessa + 'Rabbits on the Run' has nothing to do with A&M Records. And as far as I know, isn't she unsigned at the minute? Or certainly not signed to Universal anyway?

Nah, I think the new album will be fine. Knowing Vanessa, she probably doesn't really care (if she knows about it).

It's just one of those things, sadly.

Correct.  She is done with A&M.  I wasn't saying that. What I'm saying is that VC's other label or even her management may feel that the one greatest hits release will compete for shelf space or public attention with the new album, you get me?  And since it will be appearing first, the label may want to wait till the hits CD has been out a while before putting out the new one.

I'm hoping that this is not the case.  It's not unheard of for label #1 to screw label #2 by trotting out a greatest hits package and stealing the thunder from the new album.  But....this is happening *before* the new album is supposed to come out.  The worst case scenario is the hits CD dropping a few weeks after the new one.

Keep yer fingers crossed.

Post by: mixedanthony on December 12, 2010, 07:23:05 pm
Okay, so I noticed something with the new Vanessa Carlton album, the greatest hits album called "Icon." Well, it has songs from Heroes & Thieves on it which could mean shes back with A&M because I mean, how did they get the rights to those songs if she wasn't with that label during that album? They had to have her approval I'm sure, and knowing her history with them, it would be odd of her to do so. Perhaps she worked out some sort of deal, they reconciled and shes back with that lablel. What do you guys make of that? BTW, this is the setlist:

BTW, I saw this on V-Carlton.net.

Title: Re: Vanessa back with A&M?
Post by: Joel on December 23, 2010, 01:33:54 am
I strongly doubt that Vanessa's back with A&M. Universal Music Group is composed of the largest collection of subsidiary record labels. This includes A&M Records (responsible for "Be Not Nobody" and "Harmonium"), as well as well as Universal Motown Republic/The Inc. (responsible for "Heroes & Thieves"). Basically, all three records were released by the same "parent company," so I imagine releasing a compilation album would be no problem. Also, I wouldn't count on seeing any unreleased/new material. "Icon" seems to be a new line or greatest hits records released for many artists by UMG. It's most likely just another way for the record labels to make money off of fans. It's likely that Vanessa had no say/control or even prior knowledge of its release.

Also, I went into FYE at the mall today and there were a ton of new "Icon" albums by tons of artists. No new material, just compilations of songs we already have.

I'd keep my eye on what's going on with "Rabbits on the Run." This is definitely exciting and I'm curious to see who releases this album... doesn't seem like there's been any official talk about an official record deal or who's releasing the new album.

Edit: I just noticed Martin's post. Now I feel dumb. =P

aw, don't feel dumb.  You are posting your thoughts and feelings unbiased by others and that is commendable!  Plus, being a newbie myself, I want to get as many posts out there and to voice my opinion whether or not others agree or if it's been said already. 8)

The chances of Vanessa going back to A&M are quite slim. She hated how they promoted Harmonium, so why would she go back?

I agree. Vanessa is one quite stubborn woman.

Thanks for posting this topic  :)

Would loved to have seen a couple of unreleased tracks such as All I Ask, All Is Well, Superhero, Dark Carnival.

That said new album cover, hopefully a booklet inside, will almost certainly buy it.

Title: Have you heard about this? (ICON)
Post by: Giuliana on January 03, 2011, 08:28:10 pm
Hey guys, first of all, happy new year!

I hope you all, nessaholics had a great start! And I also wish a happy new year for Vanessa! My wish for this year is to hear more of her, and most of all, of her music, so let's pray Rabbits On The Run comes out in 2011, right?

Anyway, I came across this info... It seems Vanessa is realeasing a new album, named ICON with 1 or 3 new songs, and all the other songs are compilations of her three previous albums... like, the best of Vanessa Carlton, or sth like that.

My question is, have you heard of this? Is this true? Does this has anything to do with ROTR?

For further info here's a link: http://www.amazon.com/Icon-Vanessa-Carlton/dp/B004D2GMV2

Anyway, best wishes! And see ya around!

Yes, we know about it.

It has NOTHING to do with Vanessa and/or 'Rabbits On The Run'.

The 'Icon' album is a waste of money (from a fan's point of view).

Interesting..I'm surprised they're promoting V even if she has left A&M.

Does anyone know what other songs are on there? Just curious to see what they consider her "greatest hits" :P

Yeah, I know, weird.
I don't think there are new tracks though, 'cause she left A&M in very bad relashionships... but, who knows right?

I just hope ROTR is released soon!

Did anybody purchase the album?
Which songs are on it?

xx

That would have been nice to get unreleased songs on there! :)

Personally, I am not a greatest hits or best of person D: I'm picky lol.

lol, me either.  Half the time the songs that people swoon over and are popular with the masses, I rarely listen to.  Such as ATM, WH, OD, and NF.  I tend to skip them, or start the cd after those tracks.  Not that they aren't amazing songs or dislike them...I just want to experience something different than the masses.

Decided to buy it, so pre ordered it over Christmas, still haven't got it yet, obviously no new tracks on the cd, but hopefully it will come with a booklet and I love the CD cover. Will let everyone know when I get it.

Me too! My favorite song is Home, but when I tell my friends that I like Vanessa, they automatically think my favorite song must be ATM, so they start singing it or whatever, and it kind of annoys me that people automatically think that that's my favorite song. I think ATM and/or NF might have the lowest play count in my iTunes of all my VC songs. I wish my friends would like more of the music I like, because our music tastes are pretty dissimilar, but I also don't want to force my preferences on them, because I don't like it when people do that to me. Still, I wish I could spread the Vanessa love! <3

Sometimes I wish friends shared my love because then we could enjoy the music together while hanging out.  On the other hand, I love that I have this private experience.  Home is my all time fav, I used it in my wedding for my bridesmaid processional. I wanted to use it as my processional but the part I wanted was too far into the song and I wasn't sure if the timing would be right, so I used Michelle Branch's "It's you" instead.  Everyone LOVED Home.  My photographer then used it on her website for awhile, I'm not sure if she still is.  I made sure to print out my music selections in my program so that I could share the V love.

I couldn't agree more. I hate it when people immediately refer to 'A Thousand Miles' whenever Vanessa is brought up. I don't even like it all that much anymore, to be quite honest. Whenever I have the radio on, it's always either that, 'Pretty Baby' or 'Ordinary Day' that are played. Lately, I've mostly been listening to upcoming ROTR tracks. I also try my best to spread the Vanessa love without being too pushy. I do love 'Nolita Fairytale', though, and 'White Houses' is my all-time favorite song.

For a SPLIT second I thought you meant ROTR, I was about to die. LoL!  Let us know if it's worth it (CD inserts, ect.)
My take on pretty baby - loved it.  I didn't even realize it was a single (because I RARELY listen to radio) until I had to re-purchase the CD (as mine was all torn up and scratched to high holy heaven and could no longer listen to most tracks).  I did not like the revamp or "radio version" as it says on the album.  Pretty Baby was one of my favs because I had a "relationship" like that at the time and it was like she was read my diary to write that song.

Can see where people are coming from, that when you mention Vanessa, most people who don't know her music think A Thousand Miles, when she is so much more than that,

Having said that, in a way it is kind of a complement that people still remember the song, and it is an all time classic, I never tire of listening to it, and allows Vanessa to carry on making albums.

Actually, that's the only Vanessa song my mother likes! She has it on her iPod and she plays it all the time! I think she'd like some of V's other stuff, but refuses to give her a chance, just because I like her so much and play her all the time.

I got mine today! It came on the day of my exam results so that was a nice treat.

Anyway, I wasn't too disappointed. It's doesn't come with any inlay or additional Photography except for the tracklisting and credits, but I didn't expect anything. It adds to my collection, so Im really not too bothered.

Exactly! It is so painfully obvious that Universal are milking her music for all it's worth.
