Title: Parts of Vanessa's songs that give you goosebumps
Post by: Rabbits_on_the_run on February 11, 2011, 07:52:07 am
I was listening to Vanessa in my car this morning, as usual, and was thinking about all this parts of V's songs that give me chills everytime I listen to them. It can be only like 1-2 or seconds or maybe a whole song. I'd be interested to know if we fans share the same favorites :) So here's my the list, with no specific order, I'm looking forward to read yours :)

1. The very end of "Spring Street" when the voices singing "na-na-na" fade and for a brief second, the last "naaa", you only hear V's voice.

2. The part were Vanessa double tracks herself on "This Time" when singing "It just seems I should confess / Who am I to pretend"

3. The screaming/fake choir part in "She Floats"

4. Every single high note in "White Houses" and "More Than This"

5. The moment in "The One" were the song kind of re-starts after a few seconds of silence (starting with "But you'll always be my golden boy"

6. Still in "The One", at the end of the song, the second "I don't need you to tell me I'm the one" that she sings without Stevie Nicks.

7. The choir part in "Hands On Me"

8. The choir part in "More Than This" - "Let's make this our story...."

9. The beginning and re-start of the song in "Annie" (piano part).

Well, I probably have tons of other I just don't think of at the moment, cause I gotta go... Sorry if Im bothering you with another thread... again... :(

- At the end of San Francisco, I'm totally hooked on her background vocal after each "you tell me I am home"
- The last words of Home: "I'm coming home, coming home"

I don't get goosebumps, but the second verse in "My Best" (I know it's been so long, I can't ever seem to forget, etc...) always touches me for some reason.

"I know it's been so long, I can never seem to forget" in My Best,

"Key under mat, I walk the dog, order in, home alone," and "Sing for the aftershow, those candy colored lips, but, your age is showing and you've gotta work harder for it" in Fair-weather Friends,

Most of She Floats, Hands on Me, and White Houses, and that Naaaaaaaaaaah she does before the bridge in Nolita Fairytale,

All of her version of Where the Streets Have No Name,
and

"You say you're scared, you're too close, come let's see how it goes. You see me now, at the show, the seventh in the seventh row. Now you look at me, and see what I've known for so long, sad that you could be so lovely and so wrong" in The One.

And also Come Undone and the piano parts of Home.

and like a dozen other ones.

-Your #5
-The instrumental part of the bridge in Paradise.
-The Home Outro.
-The part in "Who's to Say" where she sings "we won't fade to gray-ay-ay-ay-ay" haha, I don't know how to spell/describe it, but it's pretty sounding.
-The bridge in "Half A Week Before the Winter" and "Afterglow"

I like the "Who we are, Who we are, Who we are, Who we are, We are, We are" part on the encore version of Who's To Say.

"Let's make this our story; Let's live in the glory" of More Than This.

Outro of Home.

"Maybe you were all faster than me" from White Houses.

The last instrumental part of Ordinary Day.

The bridge of Hands on Me and Heroes and Thieves.

I think there's a part that gives you goosebumps in every Vanessa Carlton song. She talks about this transcending moment in songs where you feel emotionally connected to it.

Carousel.

"i know I made a mess of things, and I'm sorry for all that" London

Beginning of Annie, actually, most of the song

Wreckage.

"Don't pretend to hold it in just let it out
Don't pretend to hold it in just push it out
Don't you try to hold it in just let it out and
Don't you try to hold it in you hold it in" -Paradise (made me burst into tears driving home from high school one day.  It was a very emotional time for me and each song on BNN resonated with me, especially Rinse and Paradise).

intro to San Fransisco

HOME. Entire thing.  Start to finish.  Favorite part is "for me, it's a glance, the smile on you face.  the touch of you hands, an honest embrace.  for where I lay it's you I keep, this changing world may fall asleep.  for me all I know is I'm coming home, coming home." (building piano is just AMAZING)

that's all I can think of for now!

Wreckage.

Totally forgot about "The Wreckage" for some reasons it's been a while since I haven't heard it. It's one of the songs that most affects me emotionnally, though.

1.) The ending of "San Francisco": "And I know what you did in San Francisco." I like how it fades out.
2.) The beginning of Papa: the "hard" part. From time to time, it's a nice little break from other stuff I play.
3.) The bridge of "Afterglow"
4.) Not really a goosebump effect but just a little pep: the intro of "Nolita Fairytale"
5.) The "With you all I know is I'm coming home"~Outro of "Home"
6.) The bridge of "All I Ask"
7.) The beginning of "London" (The one from the Hotel Cafe performance)
8.) The intro and ending of "Carousel"

It's one of my favs.  One of the many songs that she has written that I think "Did she read my diary or something??"
Call me weird or morbid, but I think about just crashing my car all the time.  It really could be so easy... >:)

In More Than This the part when she sings: "The trees grow so thick you can barely see through/But the forest bestows the simplest of truths"

The introduction to 'Come Undone', the entirety of 'Half A Week Before the Winter', 'The Wreckage' and 'She Floats' - especially the end, the bridge of 'All I Ask',  Also, the 3:27 mark and onwards from 'More Than This'. I also really, really, really love the introduction to 'White Houses' that Vanessa does live. It's absolutely beautiful.

There are plenty of moments in vanessas songs that give me chills but some are just over the top:

the end of rinse (when the orchestra and the band are rising up to there full strength)
the bridge of morning sting (cover me now ... (sounds angelic  ^^))
more than this -> and the trees ...
sway (the entire song (can't move while listening to it))
the chorus of Faces
HAWBTW (the whole song)
.
.
.

She's incredible. The more I think about in which songs I am blown away I realize that it happens in almost every song at least once ^^
she's the best ^^

1. Fools Like Me: the bridge, "I always knew, somehow always knew."
2. London: when she sings, "Wait for it, wait for it, oooh."
3. Where The Streets Have No Name: the beginning piano instrumental.
4. Wanted: at the end when she starts singing all the lines beginning with, "More than you'll..."

Probably tons more I just can't recall right now.

The One: "...some melodies are best left undone.."
All I Ask: "No one lent a hand, no one laid a look upon me
Invisible to everything but blame
No one cared to tell, no one dared to believe in anything
And left me to drown in this pain."
Private Radio: "..there's a part of me no one will ever leave be."
Rinse: "And if she runs away she fears she won't be followed
what could be the worse than leaving something behind
and as the depth of oceans slowly become shallow
it's loneliness she finds...
if only he was mine"
Paradise: "As darkness quickly steals the light that shined within her eyes,
She slowly swallows all her fear and soothes her mind with lies.
Well all she wants and all she needs are reasons to survive.
A day in which the sun will take her artificial light, her light."
Best Behavior in its entirety.
Morning Sting: "Picture perfect, she'll follow his icy politic."
