So i am watching MTV eariler today and Vanessa comes on... It is a half an hour episode with her and Anastasia (sp?), the lucky fan to sing ATM with her.
The important piece... SHE PLAYS AFTERGLOW!!!! Not all of it, but part... i was in my kitchen and i heard it... i almost went crazy!
So, she arrives at the place where they will be practicing, two baby grand pianos... little bit later she's playing a new song... it's Afterglow!
It was on today at 5pm EST for me till 5:30EST. I think there are a few more times... but check tvguide.com!

TRY!?!?! You gotta do better than that!
-
I heard it.Then the chick came in and said is that a new song? and Vanessa siad umm yeah.It was REALLY AWESOME!!!!
-
LOL Yea... and the chick called the one "One Thousand Miles"
d0h! i find it REALLY funny that you can be selected to perform with Vanessa and not really know the song inside and out ;)
She has a nice voice though, it's just really strange to hear someone ELSE singing parts.
I really respect what Vanessa said about playing the piano though... how "this is the part where the piano sings" and how each note is there for a reason ... etc
-katia
-
She shoulda picked matt!!!!
did you see the poll??? he got more than 70% of the vote!
and thatt song he did sounded really pretty, but its not on his
website, so i don't know what its called. :(

The chick was like oh cool.If i had won that thing i would have died.she didt know when the "do you think time would pass US by" she sang it like in the first chorus.
-
I loved the duet show. I didn't realize Vanessa was playing one of her new songs until it was mentioned. When Vanessa said it was she seemed kinda hesitant to say yes. Did anyone else notice that? Well anyways, the girl did not know the freakin words, I was like argh! lol
I actually liked the girl that played the classical piano, I think she was the one with the blonde hair, she was really good. And the guy was pretty good to, I loved how he played his own song.
-
She was like that girl is sexy!! hahah That made me crack up! :)
-
Yeah I couldn't believe she didn't know the words, but she was cool, good pianist. I think they picked her because they wanted someone who was a little innocent about the industry. I noticed they kept saying that Matthew was the pro amongst them and could do anything. He was without doubt, the best performer, but I think that's why they didn't pick him, they wanted someone less experienced.
I loved that song that Matthew sang. Does anyone know what it's called?
I noticed he won the MTV poll by a huge percentage.
-
WTF?!?! Punk'd is on!!
-
can't believe she played a new song! oh that was amazing.. the whole thing was. im so happy .. i got my dosage of Vanes!!!
-
eeekkkk!! Rachel does not sing "Pretty Baby" better than Vanessa does!! What is she thinking!!
and grr to "One Thousand Miles"
go Katia, picking out the "Afterglow"
It was a cool show. I enjoyed it but I didn't really like that chick's voice. She should have picked Sonya or Rachel.
-
i loved the show.... especially cuz she was playing afterglow!!!  *wishes i coulda done a duet with v* oh wait i can hardly play at all haha
-
duets rocked, lots of familiar faces. And hearing afterglow again was refreshing i loved it!
Mike
-
Its was a cool show.
-
DRRRR! I caught the tail end of it this morning. *Wishes she could have heard Afterglow*
-
OMG...this show is cracking me up.
-
If anyone could make caps i would be eternally grateful, there isn't a chance in hell it'll be shown here.
-
I thought the show was great, but that Anastacia girl was awful. I think Vanessa was thinking the same thing, and was just trying to be nice.
And she was truly not a big fan of Vanessa. If I would have walked into a room and Vanessa was playing Afterglow, I would have either:
A) Died
B) Died
C) Died
or
D) Just freakin' listen. Why the hell do you interrupt Vanessa Carlton playing a song that very few have heard before?!
Oh well, I didn't think any of them were really that good. I liked the chick from NY myself.
-
when afterglow came on, i was like "awesome!" and i was screaming...lol i knew what it was called and all the lyrics, i was singing along, not like anastasia. "oh, is that a new song?" geez! its called AFTERGLOW .she didnt even know the song, im sorry, but if u get picked for something as big as this was-a once in a life time thing, then c'mon, at least learn " One Thousand Miles" lol she seemed like she hardly knew who vanessa was...in my opinion.
-
they probably filter out all the psycho fans...
-
I think MTV picks casual fans on purpose... it honestly makes for more tv friendly responses... when you put a die hard fan with the artist, it changes the interaction. Imagine if like Let was on there, the interaction with Vanessa wouldn't have been that "everyday" common fan feel. The majority of fans who watch MTV and go to TRL and watch the crap MTV spoonfeeds people is meant for the common fan. The CASUAL fan... so MTV picked the person they thought would portray that fan...
run on...
-
........but still........ lol
-
Plus she's from the Ukraine. Of course she's not going to know a song that's only been played live twice. Give her a freaking break. She doesn't hardly speak English, so sue her for saying "One Thousand Miles".
-
Its times like these that i wish i lived in America
-
so sue her for saying "One Thousand Miles".
ah ha! not a bad idea...
but really.... i'm not trying to bag on her, i'm just very diff.
didn't people submit tapes for this contest? wouldn't you know the song is "A Thousand Miles" if you had done the time to research the artist or the contest you're submitting your tape to? *sigh* i'm just saying, with the world of the internet, i would have made a point to know the name of the song, purchased the CD, read the name of the song and listened to it a couple times prior to submitting to do a duet
If i was going to do something, i would make sure i researched Vanessa, her songs, and everything prior to submitting a tape... then when Van was playing Afterglow instead of saying "oh hey, is that a new song?" i would say "Hey, you're playing Afterglow... very nice!" :-P
I enjoyed how real she was tho, getting frazzled trying to learn her part and how she said she had to just stop for a bit. Her compliment to Vanessa when she noted how Vanessa knew exactly what to say to help her learn her part was neat.
/ramble. i watched it again today, this time from the beginning. i dig how they showed her listening to each person and how she recognized the other gal was playing Chopin and she noted that it was a hard piece! Go Vanessa with her classical style as well :D
-
word, Katia!! There are mad resources out there. I would have been all over everything I could get my hands on about Vanessa.
For real mad impressed with the Chopin knowledge. But there you go, just like we would have known that was "Afterglow" she knew Chopin.
Nessamoron, Charles? if I remember correctly...nice comment. Unfortunately I cannot sing and can all but play the radio so yeah...no tape from me. I leave that to the pros, which Vanessa so is!!

you know what I meant though, like how much you like nessa, and with you meeting her a lot and stuff.
-
I got ya!! Did you have your name in your sig before? I totally didn't see it until now, but I am glad I was right.
-
actually yeah it was there Let :p
-
Was Ron Fair interviewed? Because i have seen caps and it seems like he was, if anyone could give me any information i would be eternally grateful! I don't think you can blame someone for having bad English, i think sometimes we take it for granted that everyone will somehow learn English and we don't have to make an effort (thats certainly the British point of view and it pisses me off!).
-
Yes he was
-
That man is such a legend, what did he say Tricia? (if you don't mind summing it up please.)
-
He just sat and arranged the piece with Anastacia and said that her biggest problem would be if she got too nervous and didn't practice enough.
-
Its times like these that i wish i lived in America
yeah, ditto
-
YAY! I finally got to see the whole thing today. Afterglow sounds amazing, I can't wait to have the oppertunity to hear the whole song. I thought Anastasia did an awesome job, i can't imagine all the pressure and what she must have felt during the whole thing.
-
Even though I'm somehow with everyone who thinks she should've chosen one of the others, I really enjoyed the show, too. Some people have bashed Anastasia a little for misquoting the title of the song and flubbing a line in the bridge, but it's difficult thinking in a second language! (English is one of the very few languages in the world with separate words for "a" and "one".)
Vanessa obviously saw something in her, and I did too once I got to hear her. Very few people can perfect a recording in one take, but I could tell she was dedicated to doing what she had to do to get it right. I really hope this isn't the last time we hear of her, and perhaps it won't be. To be on MTV, on a show that's reairing several times, that's major exposure! The other final three got some exposure, also, so there's always a chance that they're going to get to work with somebody who can take them places in the industry. I'm not promising big contracts to anybody, but with work and patience, any of them can succeed!
My congratulations go to everyone - even the ones on the tapes we all giggled at - because at least they made a move, which is a far greater thing than a truly talented person's doing nothing. I just hate that they had to pick only one and that they were limited to 22 minutes of airtime. There is so much more I'd love to see!
-
I totally agree with with zurielshimon. I think I understand why Nessa picked anastacia. Rachel was a really good singer but didn't play as well as the others. sonia was an awesome player but her singing wasn't as good as the others. Matthew, much as i wanted him to win, was pro, so it probably wasn't fair. Anastacia did everything well enough for the duet, she just wasn't the best at any one thing. So congratulations to everybody. It was a cool show.
I went on matthew's page and found the song he sang. It's called "Close." You can hear it here but it's a Real Player thing not an mp3. It's a REALLY pretty song

Okay well... I gotta big test tomorrow. gotta study :(

Hey Aimee, thanks for posting that link to Matthew's song Close.
I just love that song. If Matthew released a CD with that song on it, I would buy it.
I agree with pretty much everything that's been said here. I really enjoyed the show, and also agree that the other three will get enough exposure to further their careers.
