Title: The Mets vs The Giants?
Post by: rosieposy87 on June 16, 2003, 10:11:23 am
I was wondering if any of you yanks (oh and Ghis, lol) could help me out? When me and my family go to New York we have booked a box at The Mets vs The Giants.

Are these teams big? or are the Mets like the crap second rate version of NYC's baseball team? Any information (and advice on cool things to do in NYC!) would be greatly appreciated!

Rosie :)

Find Nerea a Magic 8-ball to help her make important life decisions in moments of doubt and utter confusion. :P

LOL.

The Giants played in the world series last year, and the current record for most homeruns hit in a single season is owend by one Barry Bonds.  Who plays for the Giants.  Thats arguably the most significant record in baseball.

The Mets USED to be good.  They are pretty much 2nd rate now, but they did play in the World series... what, 3 years ago?  Last year was  Anaheim, 2 years ago was D-back, the year before was when the Yanks beat the Mets?

I don't know if "second rate crap" is the right way to describe them . . . .unless you're me

Let's put it this way, New Yorkers love em, New Yorkers hate them . .  .

Here ya go.  You make your own assumptions, dear.

The Mets are sitting at 31 wins, 36 losses at the moment.  But they are 16-16 at Shea stadium.

The Giants lead the NL West with 42 wins and 26 losses.  They are 21-13 on the road.

The best thing to watch will be Barry Bonds (if he plays--he sits out a lot, especially now that his father is sick).  If he plays, and the Mets pitch to him (a lot of teams are scared shitless so they walk him all the time), you have a good chance of seeing one of the best players in MLB history to hit a homerun.

Shea stadium isn't a GREAT ball park, but I guess it's decent if you have good seats.  Did you say you had box seats?  If so, I've been there and box seats are pretty good.

All in all, I'm jealous.  Anytime I get the chance to see a baseball game up in NYC, I go.  Just listening to all the wise-ass fans up there is reason enough for me.

yeah, we have got a box? But it was kinda cheap so i am wondering if 'Box seats' are as posh in baseball as they are in football here.

I am really really not good at Baseball and basically i have no idea of the rules (you played rounders? thats the only understanding i have of it).

so a REALLY BASIC explanation would be much appreciated because all we ever see here is people falling over as they run for a base. lol

EDIT: Yes, i know i'm being a typical girl but UGH i know the offside rule in football! LOL

Never played rounders.  Here's as brief as a baseball fan can possibly go.

The defensive team puts 9 players out in the field (normally 3 outfielders, 4 infielders, a pitcher, and a catcher).  The pitcher throws to home plate, where a batter for the other team will try to hit that ball in play.  If he misses, it's a strike.  If he doesn't swing but the ref says it's a good pitch, it's a strike.  If he doesn't swing, and the ref says it's not a good pitch, it's a ball.  A foul ball (a ball not put between the white lines) is a strike, but a batter can not foul out.  If a batter gets three strikes, he's out.  If he gets four balls, he "walks" and automatically gets 1st base.

The runners will try to go all the way around the four bases, back to home where they started.  That counts as a run.  The team with the most runs wins.

If the defensive team catches a ball hit in the air, it's an out.  There's a multitude of other ways to get a runner out, too many to divulge into.  Basically, if the runner is tagged while he's not on a base, he's out.  If he is being forced to go to another base (eg. the runner is on first when the ball is put in play, the batter must take first, the runner is being FORCED to go to second) all the fielding team has to do is touch the base while in posession of the ball.

That's enough I guess.  Hope that's basic enough.

HAVE FUN (You will)!  Baseball could always need a new fan!

P.S. If (and when) you become a baseball fan, just remember a Braves fan planted the seed.  You should join us Braves fans!

Oh yea,

P.S.s.  Three outs ends a team's turn at bat.  In your case, the Giants will bat first, the Mets will bat second.  After both teams have taken their turn at bat, that completes an "inning".  After nine innings (or if the Mets are winning 8 1/2) are over, that ends the game.  If it's tied after 9, they keep playing until an inning ends with a team in the lead.

Scratch that. Todd's description is good enough.

The one thing I would add is that a homerun is when the ball is knocked out of the park and stays fair.

a grandslam is when there are runners on all three bases and someone hits a homerun.

Also, there are times a runner can "steal" a base, so if you see someone running without their being a hit, thats usually a steal (unless the ball is dropped on the third strike, but thats another issue entirely).

After you get back, ask me about the infield fly rule

And the Braves suck.  Go Reds.

One of the best (or craziest, depending if you like it or not) is the fact that Shea is right next to the airport.  They fly over the stadium all the time--nice lil' feature.

Whenever the Braves play there Skip Carey (play-by-play man for the Braves) will always try to guess where each plane is going whenever it leaves.  "747 on it's way to Albuerquerque (sp?), New Mexico."  I've heard he actually prints out the plane schedule and is half about 85% of the time.  Skip Carey is my idol.   :)

Todd and Andrew did a good job explaining the game of baseball, so I'll just chip in my two cents ;)

The Giants are one of the better teams in the National League, and the Mets, moreso due to many of their star players being injured this year, are not.

The Mets best player right now is probably Jeromy Burnitz, who is an outfielder.

That said, watch for flying balls / bats. Depending on where you are sitting, when the ball is hit foul, it usually ends up in the stands.

and that said... have fun  :D
