Musician Vanessa Carlton says her hip quotient is quelled by her "grandma-like" qualities, like coming home early to watch "bad TV."
"Just give me reruns of old 'Perfect Strangers' episodes," she says.

At least she didn't say, "and I hate when people share my concert bootlegs . . . . "

i think she has a right to say that stuff. it's the people that are doing things illegal that will think this uncool. seems fine to me. just buy the album.

I got no problem buying her album, but when you can get sued for the 80 other MP3s you cant get on any album, thats when I have a problem with the system!

Well true, but i am with kev...I have BnN...I enjoy listening to rare tracks too...And most of the time commercials and touring gets a lot of money...
Also, people should really be money hungry all the time.
think of those people who have to promote them selves and have no record company to back them up, if that is the case, I try not to download their stuff, but if they are commercial and are signed, I don't see the problem.
(of course if i get famous and see things first hand i could change my mind :?: who knows.)

i know, but just think about it. that artist's living is mostly from her album sales. it wouldn't be fair to the artist if you downlaoded the music for free off your buddy. that's the way i see. i know if i had my own album out and everybody was skamming me like that, i'd be pretty pissed off too. lol

i think you sign an upfront deal, they pay you a certain amout...i guess after that they pay you per album, but they people that get the album money is manager, and producers, bands and song writers....and so on.
-
I think the RIAA is within their rights when they sue people for sharing stuff. What I hate is how they do it. I recall a college professor was served an DMCA takedown notice because a robot tagged a file named usher.mp3. It was really about the story by Poe.
You will see on my site, I only publically host mp3s of songs that you can't get on any album. If they want to sue me because of that, that is hella screwed up. I'll take it down, but they will have pissed me off.
This is better than all the "right to hack" stuff that they had been discussing earlier..........

I love Perfect Strangers!! :D I used to watch that show every single Friday when I was little. I don't remember what channel carries reruns, but I see one now and then. That and Dukes of Hazzard and a few other old shows like that I remember from "back in the day" I'll always tune in if I see them on. Vanessa just got 5 more cool points in my book for that comment!
And as for all that RIAA bullshit, I'd be more than happy to mail a check to Vanessa for the unreleased songs I have (if she asks me personally herself, that is).

They re-run them sometimes on the WB network. :)

The way I see it is this: The artists and songwriters get about 2% profit on each CD sold. The rest of your, give or take, $18.00 goes to the CD manufacturing companies, lawyers fees, contract fees, promotional fees, and everything else that falls under the concept of recoupment. I figure that I spend anywhere between $15 and $200 for a concert ticket which is so much more worth my while than a CD (which I do buy as well). To me downloading and sharing songs that are rare and unreleased is not a crime. I honestly have no qualms about not giving a lot of my money to to the big CD monopolies, and supporting artists like Vanessa in other ways.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I seem to remember reading a Nessa interview in which she said that she doesn't care when her fans download her music, just so long as she sells enough records so that A&M will allow her to keep making more CDs....
So now she comes out and saying that downloading songs is unfair... hmm... and we all just read *points above* about who REALLY gets the money from CDs... anybody else think that people from her record label perhaps... convinced her to speak out? Not that anybody would be pulling her strings, because we all know that she wouldn't go for that... but maybe with the new CD coming out, they strongly suggested that she make certain comments on the issue? I just find it interesting that she would change her tune...

nuttin makes nessa uncool...lol

Nessa is cool!No question but most young ppl prefer the "bad girl" image.
Maybe thats the reason.
-
I really only download music if it's either a rare song that is hard to find anywhere else, or if it's a song that I really love that's on an album that won't be released for a while. Of course, in the latter case, I will buy the album when it comes out. I believe that it's totally wrong to download all of someone's music (screwing them out of album sales).
My philosophy is if you have the time to download all the music off the internet, then you certainly have the time to run out to the store and buy the album.
Oh!! and what makes Nessa uncool?? NOTHING!!! Totally 8) 8) 8)

Another agree from here. She was probably pressured into those statements anyway but I love my VC like the rest. It's just business crap ya know?

Vanessa will always be cool to me, no matter what she does. Except maybe, marry Stephen Jenkins.
