Title: The "T" in often is silent
Post by: PIBby on August 12, 2003, 09:39:37 am
That's right, children. You definitey DON'T pronounce it. Also, in Xavier (as in St. Francis Xavier, St. Frances Xavier) the X is said like a Z. So, it should be pronounced Zay-vyur. Understood? Okay.

I am telling the truth! My I'm-13-resolution is to tell the truth, and not be cynical and sarcastic and other . . . stuff. :\

OoOoOo, AND it's the WHOLE truth. Not just sorta the truth, but it's true, all of it.

Eye off-ihn wun-dur ihf St. Zay-vyur ayte cheeze and koo-kuh. ;)

See that example sentence? It should be pronounced EXACTLY like I say.

I have just read this entire thread and I think you are all STOO-pid.

While I usually say "OFF-ten" (not OFF-tin), I will sometimes say "OFF-en" if someone I am talking to pronounces it that way just prior to my saying it.

And there are Donuts and there are Donut Holes.  The Holes are the little balls that are, theoretically, the part of the Do that was cut out to make the Hole in the Donut, though they are usually made separately. :?

"(U)GH" is really unnecessary in many places: THRU, THO, ALTHO, JONESBORO, etc.  It should be left in words like THOUGHT, TAUGHT, and CAUGHT because it adds a drawl to the A and they shouldn't be pronounced like THOT, TOT, and COT.  Likewise, DAWN, LAWN, FAWN, and YAWN should not be pronounced like DON, LON, FON, and YON.  Conversely, DOG, FROG, MALL, and CALL should not be pronounced like DAWG, FRAWG, MAUL, and CAUL.  And definitely look out for TALK and CHALK for they are certainly not TOCK and CHOCK!  Be careful around foreign names too:  SHANGHAI, CAIRO, and ZUIDER don't sound like SHANGHIGH, KYRO, or ZYDER, especially if you're from the South.

But do feel free to connect to me on AIM (same as my name here) and send me your sound files so I can make fun of you. I'll even share some of mine, but I don't have the bandwidth to post them on the web.

I've heard of Tim Horton's, but I've never been to one.  I've only been in the part of the countries where they are a couple of times, and we weren't in the market for donuts at the time.  And don't diss tha Kreme! :x

You've never been to Canada then because Tim Horton's are everywhere here....Their's 3 or 4 in the town I live in and its not a very big town

I've never been to Tim Horton's . . . :(

Timbits... hee hee, Z- there is a coffee spot called Tim Horton's... They have Donut (and I must add I do love you SO MUCH for spelling it correctly!!) Holes ... which are called Tim Bits, Timbits, TimBits... However they spell it out.

Tim Hortons+Donut Holes=Tim Bits

;)

Yep and Tim Horton's=Canadian=Great.......unlike that crappy American coffee shop chain whats it called Krappy Kreme????

EXCUSE YOU! ok lets clear something up Krispy Kreme is a doughnut shop that has coffee but is not a coffee shop! also KK are really good, they are from where i am from (well a few cities over but the same general location)...

a coffee shop chain would be starbucks...not too bad by the way....

I've been to Canada, but only once and for a few hours for a little souvenir shopping on Ouelette Avenue.  As soon as we were done, we went straight to Hell.

(Hell, Michigan, that is, for more souvenirs.)

I quite possibly did, but we weren't there to eat anything.  I don't know why, tho.  The next time I'm in Canada, I'm definitely going to eat something!

Sure enuff was.  Looked in every shop for an Ontario flag, but no one knew where to direct me.  Everyone had Canadian flags though, so I got one of them.  My favourite Canadian experience was going into a drug store and buying a 600mL Coca-Cola and handing the cashier a Twoie. :D

Well, I think perhaps there are more differences between the Northern U.S. and the Southern U.S. than there are between the Northern U.S. and Southern Canada.  I've known people from New York and Detroit coming down here and having culture shock. 8O

I just thought you guys should know, not that any of you really care.

Ah!  So you do have an accent!  I'm with you all the way up to Ant.  At no time do I pronounce AU as either the A in Bat or the O in Got.  Aunt is Aunt (unless it's my Aunt Deborah, and we've always called her Ain't Deborah for some reason).  AU is AU, except in some foreign words where it can be pronounced like OU in Out or O in Ode.

It's confusing though, 'cause . . . Like . . . The coffee pot doesn't measure well, so if you want 18 cups of coffee, you're only gonna end up with 6 or 7. It doesn't measure EXACT cups. It's horrid.

I have that, but it's my Mom's and I think she purposely put it in the HIGH cabinets so couldn't reach it 'cause she's afraid I'll break it. I'm sure of it.
