these specialist who think they know all...and saying percent of students doing their homework has dropped...Well lets give them a hint. You give more homework, people are NOT going to want to do it...and many will not do it....
boo.
-
I am a boob.
I hate homework.

I am a boob.
I did not write that
-
Yeah ya did.
-
ahhh... i HATE homework!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
so far what i've learned this year is that i'm a senior and i can do what i want. that includes not doing my homework.
-
I've found that doing homework in college actually helps me.
-
college rule of thumb: for every 1 hour in class, there's 2 hours of homework.
-
our school says 1:3...
-
eww lol
-
I have about 4 hours of homework a night. Less than 5% of the stuff that I'm given actually should be given. Most of it is time consuming fluff. How the heck am I going to learn anything about history by coloring a cartoon? And this is in a friggen AP class!
It sucks. But hey... I'm taking eight classes, four of them with an extra grade point..... I got myself into this mess.
-
Get used to it.
I'm with Tricia... at Georgia Southern, we're told that for every one hour of class, expect three hours of homework.
-
i have atleast 5 hours a night. :(
-
boo.
It is halloween.
Okay, I don't do homework.
1. PE doesn't require homework, I do run though, because I like too.
2. History hardly give homework-Although I should study but don't.
3. Math (Algebra 2) Is just like a waste of time now, because about 90% of the class are, or near 1% from failing. I'm already going to fail-their putting me in stupid people math next semester. So he gives homework a ton and LOTS of it. I don't do it.
4. Newspaper/Leadership- (those classes go through the year, and so we go basically everyother day, rotating friday though.) Newspaper is homework, quaranteed. Leadership can have some homework, and those are the ones I do, just that, except I do history if it's easy. :D
I have a life and I don't care, after school is my time to chill/relax/and talk to friends, they don't let me talk to friends during class, so I'm gonna talk to them after school, not do more work.
[/stupidity]

i get 2 hours every other night in worl history...and that is one honors class...next semester I get 3 in a row (and my world history teacher then becomes my english teacher...) luckily for me all the same people are gonna be in those classes, so we'll complain...A LOT.
-
I always do all my homework.
And Joey never said that, Cece....
-
I don't think you know the bloody half of it! One of the NESSAholics (who shall not be named!) was complaining about doing a 500 word essay-to coin an american phrase, CRY ME A RIVER!
At my last school we were expected to do a minimum of 1000 words for each essay. For geography i had to solely devise a 3000 word piece of coursework with data collection methods, statistical analysis and uuuuugh evaluation. Now i have to do a 3000 word essay on evolution and the bible and at the end of each topic in Philosophy we are expected to do a (at the least)5 page essay. At my school now we are expected to do 16 hours of homework every week as a minimum, 4 hours for each subject we take. ARGH! And you thought you had it tough!? hee hee
-
Yes.
500 words? Wow, that's nothing.
My friend's dissertation for History was only 217.
No, not words... pages (single spaced).
-
The only homework I ever do is for English or History. That's 'cause those are the only ones I understand. :) Oh, also . . . I never write the expected amount of words on an essay/paper. It's too much. 8O
Oh my God, you know what? I'm so bad in Math, it's terrible. The only things I know how to do are the fractions 'cause I can use pie charts. :D I swear, I don't even know how to use a damn calculator. (Which - I've never understood how using a calculator helps you to bcome better at Math.) It's all much too confusing. I always end up drawing pictures on my scrap paper. So, I never do homework in Math. Science, too. And Vocabulary.

Woah! You can be serious pages!?
By the way...What is a dissertation?

2 a week in religion
1 a week in physics
3 a week in film studies
oh... and then i have like a dozen college essays i still need to do!
theyre not too long tho... anywhere from 250-1000 words a piece. but there's SO many!!

In my opinion, i don't really count those as essays at all- 250 words is less than half a page! But i guess they have to be called essays, because what would they be called otherwise? lol, oh and you get LOADS!

By the way...What is a dissertation?
A dissertation is the piece of work you do at University that goes towards your final result (i don't know how you grade degrees there?). It is one HUGE piece of work that researches an area to do with your subject that often has never been studied before. You get years to do it usually. They are usually at least 10,000 words long.

i cant stand homework

a lot of colleges also call it your "thesis paper". i think my sister started hers when she was a freshman in college, but i'm not sure....
Rosie - the dissertation is for undergrad school. that's where you get your Bachelors degree (i'm pretty sure at least, but someone correct me if i'm wrong).
-
His dissertation was for his doctorate--not his undergrad.
He started the actual research his sophomore year in college... took him quite a few years to complete.
Admittedly, I've never read it--never will.

The way we work things in good ole California at good ole CSUS:
1) 3 hours of homework/outside classwork for every UNIT you take. I'm taking 15 units, I'm expected to be doing at least 45 hours a WEEK of homework/outside classwork so everyone else can STFU cause I actually NEED to spend that much time a week on homework. Not counting the fact that I also need to work.
2) We get a bachelors degree once we complete the necessary requirements (of which there are a crap load which the university is not fully aware of how to implement...besides the fact that there are budget cuts so the enrollment in most classes has been cut sometimes in half meaning people can't get their classes meaning it takes forever to graduate).
3) A Masters Thesis is required to obtain a Masters degree. This is a VERY long paper based on an original idea and research and must be approved by a Masters committee (consisting of school faculty) befor you are given a dgree.
4) A dissertation is required of those wishing to obtain a Phd. This is generally an EXPANSION on the aforementioned Masters Thesis. A Phd will not be given unless the dissertation is approved by another faculty committee.
Once I finish steps 1-4, I'll be a happy camper...until then...*dies*

I think she just gave a pretty damn good explanation of what a dissertation is. I don't know if Kyle's (my friend) dissertation was an expansion of a "Masters Thesis" or not--but I do know he had to have it approved by some kind of committee.

Wow!
If I ever make it through high school. College is going to be a pain.
217 pages still seems insane! Atleast they give ya time, I was thinking it was like a 2 month assignment :?
-
Tricia- you have SO much work to do! Its weird because when my dad was at Oxford he only studied for about 2 days a week. He had one essay a week, whereas others had 2 a week (not fun!).
-
wow... masters and phd seem really complicated!
i dont know if i want to go that far tho... i think i'm just going to get 2 bachelors degrees. or one bachelor and one minor... i'll see. i dont think i need to go that high to be sucessful in what i need to do.
what i want is 3 degrees (business, music managment business/music industry, and communications)... lol, but that doesnt seem possible to me!
i'm soooo happy! my homework load is going to be so light this week! cause half of my senior class is leaving for karios (a type of retreat) tomorrow (i'm going in spring)! so my teachers arent allowed to give us homework. so the half of us who arent going on retreat get to do community service on wed and thurs and then get friday through monday off! i need this break to do college stuff!!! lol. and work on long term projects in school. but the bad part is i have to write 20 letters to my friends who are going on the retreat... so that takes work too!
-
miss trixie!! how do you get it all done??? I would die...
I think i am only gonna get my bachelors...in what I have NO clue...

I believe that is how it is at UWM too. They expect you to do like 9-12 hours per week outside of class, PER CLASS.
That said, between all 16 of my credits (most of which are 300 level or above) and me being a lazy ass I usually end up doing things the night before they are due / night before the exam . I really need to quit that, I haven't been burned yet ::knocks on wood::, but it is still a bad habit to get into.
But yes, it is hard to find time to study for school, attend classes, work, and sleep. That is why I am always zzZZzzz and :microwave: about things having to do with school.
As for the stuff about grad school, in psychology we write up these lab reports and that, and our TA was telling us how in one of her reports just the introduction section (which is usually 5-10 pages for us at this stage) was 47 pages and was almost 60 until they made her cut it down lol.

Is it true that to really be legitimate you have to take 2 degrees there? That is what i have heard anyway, i've heard that american degrees aren't really counted as legitimate over here. *runs and hides*
-
I've never heard such a thing.
I know that according to me there are a LOT of worthless degrees people get here. I won't name names since I don't want to be offensive, but some of us have to work A LOT harder for our degrees.
-
College sucks. I'm going through this thing called planning my future, and I reeeeally don't like it. My undergrad degree is in anthropology, a dicipline that I love and I'm good at. But I'm also very involved in student life and student development, which I also love (and i think i'm a pretty hot RA). So I am torn between going on for a masters in anthropology with no money and limited jobs, or getting a masters in Higher education administration, which is NOT being a principal like everyone thinks, but being able to go into the field of student development or student life at colleges and universities. That's where there's lots of oppertunity and the big bucks.
It's hard trying to figure out what you wanna do. Any advice out there?

That's simply the English "We think we're better than America" attitude.

Someone we know who went to a university in North Carolina said it was ridiculously easy (sorry Limey!) and the level of GCSE examinations here (i took those this year!!) or maybe at the hardest A-levels (the ones we take at 18 ). Maybe NC just has a rubbish university?American education here certainly isn't regarded as good as ours- but thats probably just us being snobby.

Really? They must be getting more strict there. Everyone I know that went there was always talking about how much GSU was a party school and the more serious schools were Tech and UGA.
Homework sucks. I always skipped out on it in my high school classes, or did it in the breaks between classes. :D But I had college leverl chem last year, and it was such a mistake to blow it off... x_x

I said that's what we're told to do. We don't actually do it.
Yes, Georgia Southern is the best party school in the state. Yes, if you want to have fun, you come to Statesboro.
But college is what you make it. If you came to Georgia Southern with the mindset of getting good grades and learning--you can do that here. In fact, in MANY departments (business, education, Kineseology) we are BETTER than any school in the state.
If you come to Georgia Southern to party, it'll be a party school. If you come to learn, it'll be a great academic institution.

No sorry Limey lol there are tons of school in NC so which one is the key factor....but we do have some of the best schools (at least for the medical field) in the country...

WELL
Kentucky is the 2nd most illiterate state in the country! What now, bitch?
