Me too!

Who would pay for a site just to put that picture?!

The world is sad.

BSD? Maybe I'm slow again.

BSD= Berkeley Systems Distribution, a free genetic UNIX. It is probably one of the oldest operating systems in use today. The source code is public and anyone can use it. Windows even borrows code from it.

The first TCP/IP stack was written for it, and for years operating system designers would use that stack in their own OS.

Uhh.. yeah.. BSD rocks!

Uhh.. no. The pengin is named Tux. He's the mascot for the Linux kernel. I have to add that Linux is neither a genetic nor a licenced UNIX. It's merely a clone. And a superficial one, at that. Combined with the GNU userland tools, it's a unix as far as the user is concerned, except better in some cases (the GNU tools ROCK!). Once the user wants to access the system at a lower level however, the differences are stark.

It's like saying that Windows ME and Windows 2000 are the same thing. There are similarities, but as a developer, you know they are fundementally two different operating systems. Sure, some programs will run on both (POSIX on unix/linux, win32/whatever* on me/2k), and some won't.

LINUX IS NOT A UNIX! TUX IS THE MASCOT OF THE LINUX KERNEL!

* I'm not a Windows developer and I know next to nothing about programming on it at more than a superficial, basic level. I hope I'm accurate. If not, you can correct me Andrew.

I believe the politically correct term for computer geek is, "computer knowledgable person" thank you I made that up! haha

I think you're right Daniel, a computer geek and nerd are two completely different things.

LMAO @ all of this.  As a Computer Science major, this stuff is just hillarious.  I guess that makes me a nerd too.  As if that fact was ever in question.

Take heart. Alternate OS's are among the nerdiest topics out there.
