I have just currently finished a book called life is funny by E.R Frank. It's about all these different teenagers lives that tie together at the end. It made me realize that there is a bigger world out there other than the little town that I live in. It's a kind of odd book...kinda dirty at times. If you can't take the occasional fuck here and there well this book is not for you.
Also I am reading a book called please stop laughing at me which is about a girl who got bullied so badly at school. I haven't really gotten that far in it but the book is supposed to be good and is to make people think twice about bullying.
so those are my recomendations if you read...
-
no i read, i just don't know what to read. but you've got me interested in the first one. i like books that pull things together from different stories. kind of like Holes you know? so i think i'll check that one out. thank ya
Amanda

Ohh I loved holes. I had a read it a few times to grasp it. but when I finally figured it out I thought it was the greatest book!!

yeah. i read it in 5th grade. and then in 8th grade my english teach made us check out books for our 'free read time' so i just checked out holes all year and pretended i was reading it. *shrugs*
i thought it was cool though how the book told a story that took place 100 years ago and a story in the present and then tied them together in the end. that's my fave part about it.

ick...i hated holes, and i went to see the movie thinking hey, it's gotta be more lively then the book! and it was the EXACT same...I was like ick...I about fell asleep.

OMG!! how can you say that!! that book will always be a cherished book in american literature. The movie was wicked awesome even though it was a tad different...if I do believe in the book it said stanley was fat...in the movie he was not fat....that makes a biiiiig difference...and in the book it said that he was always being made fun of...see biiiiiig difference...ok whatever... I dragged my dad to the movie theater to see holes and he fell asleep and when I said to him wow dad wasn't it so sad when staney and zero died from being bitten from the yellow spotted lizzards he said yes I teared up!! haha it was wicked funny.

Wow. I just finished Please stop laughing at me by Jodee Blanco and it was amazing. My hurt was filled with pain for her and happiness at the end of the book. It was a great poor. I personally thought this was an extemely powerful book which took a lot of courage for her to write considering it was about her own experiences. If you haven't read the book you should go pick it up from the library.

I'm reading Rise To Rebellion by Jeff Shaara and 1984 for school....ugh. I hate reading books for school. I'd rather read stuff I wanna read.

At the moment I am reading book called go ask alice. I'm not too far into it yet but it's about a girl who gets into some trouble or something. I'll let you know when I get father than page 15. :D
-
ooooh Go Ask Alice is a creeeeeeeeepy book! But really really good.
Its the reason I'm petrified of being buried when I die. I'll let you read and find out why though.
-
i really enjoyed the book "holes" but i found it kind of creepy.. well not creepy in terms of scary, just odd i suppose.
i am currently reading three books.. one for school ("guildenstein and rosencrantz are dead" i think is the title.. i just started that one today after reading "hamlet"). then i'm am almost done with "eva moves the furniture" which i really, truly, recommend. Finally, i'm reading some scary dean koontz book my dad got me for christmas.. something about a doll..
i really love reading- it is very relaxing and so fun to go into another person's world for a little while. i specifically enjoy detective/scary/horror books.. but i hate horror movies.. i'm not sure why.
anyone read "eva moves the furniture"?
haha enough rambling for today..

My teachers always tell me to stop reading so much.
I have only two favorite authors, I love love love Christine Feehan and Nicole Jordan.
My favorite book by Christine Feehan is Dark Fire, but I also love another, Dark Guardian.
(part of the dark series....)
Then Nicole Jordan, my favorite book by her is, The Prince of Pleasure.
Right now I am currently reading a new novel by Christine Feehan, "Shadow Game" I'm not really into it yet, but I'm hoping it gets better.
-

I HATE THAT! I just wanna read the book, I don't want to dissect it and all that crap, I just want to read. If we could just do that in school, I would have no problem. They make you find all this symbolism and stuff, and I swear sometimes they make it up. OK, I think I'm done venting now.
-
My favourite book of all time is "Stargirl" by Jerry Spinelli. That book changed me. Its SO amazing! You ALL must read it!
And '1984', we read that at school but that is an amazing book too. We had to read 'Of Mice and Men' for our English exams and we dissected it to death- but it made me understand it a lot more i suppose.

exactly. they just go crazy over it. i'd rather just read it and take a test on it
Amanda
-
I don't, I find sometimes it helps make the book better...give a new "life" to it...
-
half the time i don't even understand it til we do analyze it haha... especially SHAKESPEARE
-
oh boy shakespeare...icky I get to read more of him this year, last year I read romeo and juliet, lmao and to get through it i would act out the parts instead of just reading it...*weird I KNOW...*
-
there's this Romeo and Juliet version where it has the original print on one side and the 'translation' on the other side. lol. it's halarious but the translation side comes in handy. lol. i'm reading it this year in English one. i'm a freshmen
EDIT: hmm, my thing says i'm 15. lol. i'm pretty sure i'm 14. lol
Amanda
-
yea my book was like that, i didn't pay much attention to the translation...
my favorite part was the intro...forgot what that is called...prologue or something like....
-

uh I tried reading that but I couldn't get past the part where she got up in the cafe and started playing her banjo or whatever. I thought it was corney...but my english teacher(who is a guy) said it was a wicked good book. It just wasn't my style.

that's how my romeo and juliet book was too. I didn't pay any attention to it. My english teacher was wayyyy better translating the book to us. He made it soooo funny. lol
-
Romeo and Juliet wasn't terribly hard to understand but now we're reading Hamlet... eep, not so fun. Oh and MacBeth-- another fun one :?
-
I wanna read Tuesdays with Morrie 8)

You just gotta get past the first 'corny' bit. Maybe its just the style he writes in, i guess it isn't for everyone.
Oh and at my school some English Lit classes do Shakespeare with sock puppets to make it clearer! Ahhh, my friend did one of Hamlet the other day.
-
I finished 1984 today and it was...interesting...has anyone else read it?

Hell yeah! We read it at school, with a very inadequate teacher, but it was so good nonetheless. I love that book!

do many of you here read a lot? types of books are you into? fave authours? and do u all love harry potter like me? :)
yea i like to read. i dont have a book on the go at the minute. i did have stephen kings dreamcatcher but that was way to not for for me.
i am a big fan of fantasy, horror, comedy, what ever. i tend to like most books if i just knuckle down and read them.
reall like stephen king and terry prachette. also i really heart <3 harry potter. im not ashamed to say i was on the point of tears on the last book. harry is so brave <3
I merged your topic into a similar one for you, there is also a Harry Potter thread if you want to talk about him with other fans-Let-[/size]
-
I enjoy Harry Potter as well milf, you're not alone.
Right now I'm reading a lot of books for school. I've been reading Dancing Skeletons by Katherin A. Dettwyler which is a beautiful book about life in West Africa.
-
anyone read Lord of the Flies? i've been bored in my english class (i've read all the books for this year) so i've just been picking up some that we're going to read next year. but i've heard this book is good..
oh, and yes, i love the Harry Potter books. but i didn't like the 5th one as much, it was still good, but i'd have to say book 4 is the best.

STOP! PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR AND STEP AWAY FROM THE BOOK!
8O
God, that book was dreadful...I got to where I only had 11 pages left in the book, skipped 10 and red the last page...
I read it because in 8th grade I needed a book for Eng. and my teacher suggested it...horrid.
but that is my opinion.
Books I have read since this thread
-Night
-Medea
-Antigone
-A Doll's House
and some short stories and sections of other books.
-
ohhh I need a book to read for my English class....I have to have read 3000 pages by the end of the term...I'm like somewhere around 1200...:S haha oops...
I tried reading the da vinci code but got a little bored with it...I'll go back to it...maybe it is my ADD. :S
Any books that are easy to understand for my mind?? :D
-
*ahem*
The Prince of Pleasure by Nicole Jordan.
You'll learn someting from that...and more!

bleh, i share joey's opinion. one of the worst books i've ever had to read for school ever, as well as one of the worst books i've ever read.
Right now i'm attempting to tackle The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. We're not reading anything in Ap English, which is weird, so i figured i'd pick something up to fill in the void :-P But if my friend who works at the library can get me a copy of Lucy Maud Montgomery's journals, then that's what i'll be switching to.
-
lol jess-the sad thing is I wasn't forced to read it...I just did. wow *what an idiot I am*
-
I work at a bookstore
I read all the time...
-
I'm just finishing "The Hobbit" for the 2nd time (but in English this time, woohoo!).
Then I'm not sure what I'm gonna read. I bought "Hyperion" and "Fall of Hyperion" a couple of months ago but haven't read them yet. They seem to be good though.
-

lol, well it's probably good that you did. chances are, you'll be made to read it sometime in school. And it's supposedly considered one of the great works that a lot of people in college will be familiar with.

yeah, i've read to like page 41 and it's soooo boring. gosh. it's like something i would read in 5th grade. not too challenging at all. i don't understand why we're reading it in honors english next year. plus i've read like a million "cast away" novels. *sigh*
anyone like Sci-fi novels? i love em. i've read this one series... i forgot the author.. well, the first book was called Ender's Game. it was really good. then Xenocide. i forgot the other ones. but they were good. i have to look up who the author is...

I'm reading Hamlet (for school)
and I amm really enjoying it..
I hate this year.. I dont get to read for pleasure..for I have too much work.
I CANNOT WAIT for summer when I can sit on the beach with a book and just read and relax!.. how nice does that sound right about now? when it's march 16th and SNOWING. blah!
-
reading for pleasure....ay yi yi...i mean fun.

Oh no oh no oh no! that is one of my favorite books ever! THE SYMBOLISM PEOPLE THE SYMBOLISM!!!!!
i absolutely loved picking "the lord of the flies" apart- it's one of those books that i feel shouldn't be read until junior or senior year of high school because when i had to read it for school in 8th grade, it was on the literal level... it's so much deeper than just a story about boys on an island.
oh i love it.
:-)

would you rather my saying reading for fun?
oh whatever.
lord of the flies..'tis true about the symbolism.. the only thing that got me through that book was looking at the big picture..

the "i mean fun" was my touch of sarcasm...
and Lord of the Flies is just so boring...

Amanda
Orson Scott Card.
Speaker for the Dead, Children of the Mind, Ender's Shadow, Shadow Puppets
The last two are spinoffs that focus on Bean.
That is the only Sci-Fi series I was able to read. The rest lose me right away.
I had to give up the Sci-Fi section the day I got it because I looked at all the books all "o_O" and started freaking out. They gave me classics, foreign language and all hardback fiction instead. Much better.
-
gah! I just got "Waiting for Godot" "The Stranger" and "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" to read for english, all due within the next week! *hits head against the wall*
guess i won't be looking for an outside book read anymore. *throws "The Foutainhead" away*

yes! that's it! i've read most of the series. then there was this other book that wasn't an Ender series book... i can't remember that name either! lol. i read them all last summer and i can't remember the title. it's funny, i can remember like what happens in books but i can never remember the titles, and like hardly ever the author. lol. yeah, i haven't read many Sci-Fis. they get really complicated and start using big words and they're not even real english words. lol.
i'm reading Romeo and Juliet rigth now in english. it's actually a pretty good. i always thought it was Tybalt who was the peacful one... boy was i off. lol

Existentialism sucks my balls. the only time it's good is when it's in the title of a Straylight Run Song.
I read the first half of "Waiting for Godot" last night.....quite possibly the weirdest, most confusing thing i've ever read. I think i might have to hit up sparknotes when i'm finished to see if i can make sense of this thing
