Kanye West is the newest member of Roc-A-Fella, he is a producer/rap artist. His song "Through The Wire" kept growing on me, and today he was on the local hip hop/R&B station for about an hour because he was in town this weekend for Twista's release party. He is actually a really interesting dude.
He says he wants to bring "the love back to hip hop" and wants to be associated with the likes of Andre 3000, Talib Kweli, etc. who are trying to be innovative and that in the game. I didn't know that he helped out with production of such songs as Jay-Z "H to the Izzo", Ludacris "Stand Up" and Alicia Keys "You Don't Know My Name". And of course he is also out there on the song with Twista and Jamie Foxx, "Slow Jamz", which will be on his CD College Dropout which comes out on Feb. 10th.
He seems like a pretty cool guy, just trying to do his thing and that. Not trying to be all ghetto and whatever, but just doing his thing. He has pretty good beats and samples too. I was thinking about buying his CD, but the odds of me buying it have increased tenfold by hearing him flow and talk about his stuff on the radio today, so I figured I'd make a thread for him here.

my hearts a flutter....I ADORE Kanye.
-
yeah he is very talented...
one of the best new producers today...
he has also done alot for the ROC...lots of production for them and
others....yeah I love the beat to "get by" ...one of his best works.
I am looking forward to his LP and his future productions.

As always, Best Buy will have Kanye West's CD College Dropout for $9.99 this week when it comes out Tuesday. It sounds like it will be good, it features appearances from Jay-Z, Common, Mos Def, and the Harlem Boys Choir, and of course "Slow Jamz" feat. Twista and Kanye's current single, "Through The Wire."
-
I went and got Kanye's CD today. People were straight tearin' it UP. I got there at 1:30 and the front display was damn near empty, lol.
That said, the CD itself is pink, LOL. I was like "Kanye why is your CD pink!?!?!?!?!?!" ... and he's dressed like a red mascot bear on the cover of the CD, so he looks like that dude who always wears the Tigger suit on Rap City and calls himself the Real Big Tigger, lol.
-
i love the "i gotta dark skinned friend that looks like Michael Jackson, I gotta light skinned friend that looks like Michael Jackson" part. LMFAO
-
yeah overall the album is pretty good...
it could of been better but hey ...
still good enough for you to pick up and support real
hiphop music..

Yeah it is pretty good. There are too many little skits, but Kanye has some good songs on there. The song with Kweli and Common is the shiznat. The dopest song on the CD.

Poor Kayne...

Screen capin' by me..haha
And if you don't get it, look at the This Week, Last Week, Weeks on Chart.

i Love that song "spaceship" the first two lines of that song sum up exactly how i feel about my job LOL. and i like "workout plan", becuz kanye did a good job producing that one, but i don't like the synthesized voice he put in at the end hmmmmm what else..... i like the first song cuz it's just straight goodness
-
All falls down is my FAVORITE song. I never thought I would love a rap artist as much as I love him. I need to get his cd...once I save up enough moolah I'm getting his cd.
-
Yeah, he's been behind the scenes for AGES hasn't he? I'm glad he finally has a chance to shine because he's really talented. 'Through The Wire' is a really good song, that has a message behind it too- i expect you've seen the video, hehe.
But yeah, big up Kayne West because he's straight forward and not awfully silly like the rest of hip hop seems to be at the moment.
-
i love that cd

Ok, I saw him tonight and was totally blown away by his performance. I went to Pepsi Smash and saw him, Switchfoot, Sugarcult, Alicia Keys and Christina Milian and he was probably the least of the people I wanted to see... but I came out a new fan of him and he was BY FAR the best performance tonight! He's awesome live!!! He performed "Through The Wire" (that violin girl was there), "Jesus Walks" (one of the top performances EVER on Pepsi Smash I think) and that was supposed to be it... but even though we were all exhausted was wanted to hear more! I have never seen fans at Pepsi Smash want to hear another song from an artist this much in all of the 9 tapings I went to! We caused a mini riot screaming and banging on things... so we got him to do "All Falls Down" as well. Then we started another riot (and can I point out that we had been there for like 6 hours and before Kanye came on all we wanted to do was go home cause we were exhausted) to get Kanye to perform again cause we still hadnt had enough. He talked it over with the piano player and looked like he was going to do something... but then the producers came out and started taking the equipment out so they couldnt. I guess they had to have us out of there by a certain time and we had run over...
anyways, yeah, there's something about him live. He's GOOD!!! [/b]

He's cute as hell.
I say fuck the police, thats how I treat em
We buy our way out of jail, but we can't buy freedom
We'll buy a lot of clothes when we don't really need em
Things we buy to cover up what's inside
Cause they make us hate ourself and love they wealth
That's why shortys hollering "where the ballas' at?"
Drug dealer buy Jordans, crackhead buy crack
And a white man get paid off of all of that
But don't even get me started on all that bullshit.

Its cos it was written by Lauren Hill (i think?) and she is SO racist.
-
I know! She "[hates] white people!" What is that?! If some caucasian girl got up there and said she hated ANY other race, she'd be SO uncool and hated.
Double Standards are retarded.

Yeah, its shit i know. My friend told me there's not a song on 'The Miseducation' where she doesn't make a racist remark. But whatever, its what the majority does to include the minority in society- be curteous to it.
-
But they're not the minority! Ahhhh! So much bullshit.
Honestly? What about the few white families in black neighborhoods? They're technically the minority, and no one gives a shit about them. Ughhh
-
I guess what they do now is just pent up rage for how poorly they were treated in the past. But people like Lauren Hill just make things worse... We want to grow together, but she's just ripping down any chance of us being truly equal one day. If that ever happens... I hope it does and race isnt a factor anymore.
But ANYWAYS... we're a lil off topic here, lol.
Kanye West rocks!!!
-
I guess what they do now is just pent up rage for how poorly they were treated in the past.
How badly THEY were treated? No - How badly only HALF of their ancestors were treated. And if that's the case, you don't hear me and almost every other person I know complaining about Indians' mistreatment and actually being HEARD. The Indians, Catholics, and now whites are being treated just as unfairly as blacks were. Hell! The Jews were opressed more by Nazis than blacks by whites and how often to you hear a Jew complain? But you're right, Holly, people like Lauryn Hill only make it worse.
PS I'm not yelling at youuu :D I'm just saying that.

Okay lets not start this. You face barely ANY discrimination in comparison- don't fool yourself. Have you ever been a slave? Umm NO. So stop this shit about the fact that you're a catholic means you're persecuted. Whites aren't being treated HALF as bad as blacks EVER were, so get that into your head, okay? All i'm saying is that its clearly hypocritical of Lauren Hill to say racist things- not that we're being discriminated against on a large and incredibly unfair scale.
-
When Catholicism was first around - How many Catholics were executed? How many Indians were killed in the prcoess of having their land stolen from them? How many Jews were killed during the Holocaust?
Lauryn Hill's statement is one good example of how whites are discriminated against. Besides that, there are hate crimes (which are only said to be committed against "minorites"), scholarships for "minorities," programs for minorities (solely because the government thinks kids like that are the only one with problems), government funding for minorities! I went to kindergarten with kids who lived in the ghetto but had nicer clothes than I did because the government bought their clothes. Whites have faced discrimination, but it's just been too subtle for us to realize 'til now.
I'm not racist; I'm stating the facts.
EDIT: Has Lauryn Hill ever been a slave. Exactly. She and I are in the same place to discriminate against each other. I was never a slave, neither was she. But - her skin's black, so that puts her in the place to pretend like she's been discriminated against. Hey! My skin's red, where's my publicly insulting John Smith and his bitches?
-
Whites were slaves--think back to Roman times. The whole slave thing is b/s now anyways. CeCe is correct, no one in America is a (legal) slave. There shouldn't be all these special programs for "minorities." Everyone should have to work equally to gain the same advancements.
The whole slave thing is blown out of proportion in itseld. That does not mean I am saying it didn't happen, but why it happened and how it happened should be look into as well. Native Americans were slaves, in fact there are not many left because of that reason. That's a partial reason that Blacks were made slaves.
Also, one of the strangest things to me is, the idea from using Africans as slaves came from Africa. Tribes would defeat other tribes and use those people as slaves...
There is no excuse for racism no matter what happened to whom 200 years ago.
OH! And my favorite thing in the world: other races are racist too. It's not just white people, though it sure feels that way.
-
Lauryn Hill didn't write those lyrics AT all. what happened was Kayne took the "When it all, when it all falls down" sample from one of Lauryn Hill's songs. He didn't get premission to use it, so instead he got a another singer named Sylenna Johnson to sing that hook. I've never heard anything about Lauryn Hill being a racist. She is infact very spiritual, religious person.
and i'm not even gonna get into the whole slave argument lol

it`s not Lauryn Hill singing on that song? The voice is identical!
And yeah, I never heard bout her being racist either :?

Oh okay, i just heard Trevor Nelson say it was written by her- thats all. She is racist corey- she was said to be part of the 'Black Panthers' organisation and has insulted white people before- that doesn't stop her from being a 'spiritual and religious' person but she does have racist tendencies.

I don't see the racism. People are forever taking rap lyrics out of context and concluding racism, violence, etc, but that's never the inteneded meaning with intelligent rappers like Kanye, Talib, etc. (Although I make no defense for most of the childish hip-hop crap that's out there at the moment.)
The reluctance of poor black communities to support themselves and bring themselves out of poverty has always been the inspiration for socially aware rap. The point is that what little money exists in the community is sent back out because of drugs, jail and market fashion trends. The black community doesn't make those trends, clothes, drugs and they don't make any money off of those things. Instead people who are already rich outside do. So the people stay poor because they won't support their own. That's what he means, it's a wake up call to the black community, not a blanket accusation directed at all white people.
At least that's my interpretation of it.
-Kev
P.S. Being a member of the black panthers doesn't make a person racist.
-
She can't be too racist anyway because she did a song for the rosie o'donnell christmas album.
But we'll never know what a person is truly thinking.
-
Alright, so I lied about not getting invovled in the race argument....
She's black panther, SO WHAT. I have a very close family member who was a black panther, and he is NOT racist. The black panther movement was our way of fighting back! I cannot even begin to name some of the atroscities we've gone through. One that sticks out of my mind is the case of Emmit Till. He was a young Black man that was ACCUSED of whistling at a white girl. ACCUSED! off of that accusation along a gang of white men beat this poor kid to death, shot him in the head, and hung him off an ACCUSATION. So what are we suppose to do against Not being able to sit where we want on a freakin' bus. Or not being able to eat at the diner of our choice, or having hoses sprayed on us. Or having dogs relased against us for defending our rights? well we have the black panthers to stand up for us. I'm not sayin' the message of the black panthers is right, but i fully understand where they come from.
So don't call her a racist until you know where she's coming from. I don't think she's a racist at all. She just simply believes in protecting herself, and standing up for our race
-
It's a song, it's a cool song, WHO GIVES A SHIT?!
Get over it and get a life. There's no point in arguing it, especially when the writer isn't even envolved in the arguement! Stop ruining a perfectly good thread for a good artist.

Yeah- i mean this was partly the point i was trying to make- that i have NO idea what it is like to be discriminated against and if CeCe and Joey think they've been discriminated against on the scale that blacks have then i really question that. . So yeah, i can also accept that being a member of the Black Panthers does not entail being a racist. But you have to admit there is a fine line between 'standing up for yourself' and expressing racist views about another race, just like there is a fine line between being proud of your country and being a nationalist.
As for Scum's point, i do get that point- and you're probably right, but that doesn't mean LOTS of people aren't going to take it the wrong way. If a white person even THOUGHT of releasing a record which had similar comments then they would be shunned.
As a Catholic CeCe- you recieve relatively NO discrimination (if any) whereas black people, even these days, experience regular and daily discrimination. Your point about slavery is invalid- despite the fact that black people are no longer slaves they still recieve discrimination on a FAR greater scale than you will EVER recieve in your lifetime.
-
So what are we suppose to do against Not being able to sit where we want on a freakin' bus. Or not being able to eat at the diner of our choice, or having hoses sprayed on us. Or having dogs relased against us for defending our rights?
YOU can sit anywhere on a bus. YOU can eat the dinner of your choice. YOU have never been sprayed by a hose LEGALLY by someone of authority. YOU have never had dogs released against you for defending your rights.
You are just as much the victim of that, as I am of the oppression of Indians by the English, the persecution of the Catholics by the Romans (and in the earlier Church by the Jews).
And Lauryn Hill PUBLICY said: "I hate white people."
That, in my opinion, is a bit on the racist side . . . But you know.
As a Catholic CeCe- you recieve relatively NO discrimination (if any) whereas black people, even these days, experience regular and daily discrimination.
Discrimination . . . UGH! Discrimination is giving scholarships to blacks BECAUSE they're black. Giving a job to someone BECAUSE they're a woman, or BECAUSE they're black or Asian or WHATEVER. It's ALL dsicrimination. I'll face probably MORE discrimination being a white Catholic in my lifetime than a HELL of a lot of blacks will. And that's BY the government. I'm just as tired of being discriminated against by the government as blacks were as tired of being discriminated against by the government.
-
Discrimination does still exist today... Cause of some people who can't stop living in the past. But I really don't think race matters AT ALL!
But yeah... I like Kev's interpretation of those lyrics. It's the truth, that really does go on and it sucks.
-
As for Scum's point, i do get that point- and you're probably right, but that doesn't mean LOTS of people aren't going to take it the wrong way.
You're right. Because of the fine line you mention, people will take it the wrong way. But only people who don't understand what they're listening to. That's their fault, not Kanye's 8)
If a white person even THOUGHT of releasing a record which had similar comments then they would be shunned.
Agreed. And rightly so. White people have no cause for similar lyrics. In America at least, they're not a minority struggling as a side effect of a (largely indifferent) majority's prosperity.
But yeah... I like Kev's interpretation of those lyrics.
Well I had to learn something from Chuck D's autobiography :)
-Kev
-
to Cece's point (and i'm not yelling at you either, i just want to comment on this) :)
Yeah... every race has had their share of discrimination. Christians and Jews were persecuted by Romans in early times, Jews were killed by Nazis, Indians had to move off their land because white people forced them to, Japanese were sent to internment camps in WW2... and many other tragedy's in history. But African Americans were kidnapped and taken from their home in Africa, treated and sold as property, and had no chance for a long time to rise above that for a LONG time only because of their skin color. Only in the middle of last century did they get all the rights that white people get... So being that that wasnt too long ago, a lot of them still feel the sting from it, so I guess that's why they're still bitter and rightly so.
Luckily, things have been getting better between races, but we're still not where we should be... but I think if things continue improving, one day race wont mean anything but what you look like.
-
I got "The College Dropout" today. Haha, the guy who sold it to be carded me before I could by it to make sure I was 18. I have never been carded for buying a parental advisory CD before, even though I think you're supposed to.
Then I got a whole talk about how I shouldnt buy it because it's bad music and I dont need to listen to it.
I bought it anyways....
-
It's still discrimination, nonetheless. And apparently - according to AA's point of view, it's timeless. So I'm going to dwell on what happened 1900 years ago, and what happened between 50 and 600 years ago just as they're dwelling on what happened 40+ years ago.
-

It is a matter of time though, and you know it. I would call you plain stupid if you carry on saying you're discriminated against because of something that happened 1900 years ago. You feel NO effects from that today apart from being taught it in a biased history class. 30/40 years- thats not even a GENERATION CeCe- if you were black both of your parents would've suffered such abuse, is it any wonder they're still bitter? I'm not bloody suprised!
-
Yeah... Rosies right, you feel more hurt by something if it actually happened to someone you know! And you hear the stories directly from them who expirienced it, not history books.
Like for African Americans, if their parents weren't alive, their grandparents definitely were!
here's some Kanye West lyrics:
"I get down for my grandfather who took my momma
Made her sit in that seat where white folks ain't want us to eat
At the tender age of 6 she was arrested for the sitins
And with that in my blood I was born to be different"
make sense?
-
Wow, i borrowed his CD from my brother and it is AMAZING. Its so admirable what this guy is doing for rap, turning it back into what it should be. I adore 'Never Let You Down' and 'Family Business'.

Hey Rosie! I agree with you! I got his CD and it took me like 2 weeks to open it lol just cuz I forgot but hey, it's a very good one! =]

I saw the new video yesterday on TRL and it was a very well made/produced video. You can tell they took extra time to make it. 2 thumbs up from Alecs and Alecs.
