Title: Joss Stone
Post by: Grakthis on February 06, 2004, 06:22:23 am
16 year old british soul singer who sounds like shes got 25 years of smoking, doing drugs and drinking whiskey under her belt.  An amazing soulful voice.

Her only release right now is entirely covers, but you're not listening for the songs (which are all good songs anyways) but you are listening for her VOICE.  It's really a throw back.  Much like Norah Jones did, I think this girl could start a mini-revival.

Check out a few songs from her release 'The Soul Sessions'.

I'm already sick of hearing her current single. But she does have an amazingly soulful voice.

I saw the video.... was thinking... damn this sounds familiar!

It's the most fuckedup cover of the White Stripes debut single.

For your first single, be original.

Just because its not all fast and stupid, and you can actually hear what she's saying.

I really like Joss Stone, i'm not sure how much stage presence she has- she's very shy and it seems weird that she's my age. But anyway, i like the single- but it has been overplayed to sheer nastiness here. I am fed up of hearing "aoooh aw oh" again and again. But she is great, and she has worked with a shitload of soul legends for her album.

I've heard her, she's so good!  Was she the girl who sang at the Kennedy Center Honors for James Brown?  I didn't hear the name when they introduced her.

I wonder why her record company waited so long to give her a push?

Just got her album last night.. great album! I recognized every single song- I love "the chokin' kind" "dirty man" (my favorite LOL) "some kind of wonderful" and "all the king's horses" (also a favorite). She does great versions of those songs in my opinion.

I can't get her version of "fell in love with a boy" out of my head!!

I would say that since you have a Blazin' Squad custom rank it is actually mandatory to d/l some of their songs. I recommend such genius songs:

*Flip Reverse It
*Here 4 One (particularly good!)
*Crossroads (a shameless cover)
*And last but not least "We Just Be Dreamin"- the Squad's contribution to the world of sentimentality.

It was a great show. I got to watch some of the sound check and meet her. I got my cd signed and took a picture with her. She did Jet Lag, You Had Me, Don't Cha Wanna Ride, Spoiled, Right To Be Wrong, and Don't Know How from her upcoming album. She was so cute on stage because she was embarrassed by the cheering. I'm definitely getting her new album it's gonna rock!

It's similar in vibe to the first one. You Had Me and Don't Cha Wanna Ride are upbeat. Spoiled is kind of like a ballad like Chokin Kind.  Right To Be Wrong is slow. It's a nice mix. If you like Soul Sessions I'm sure you'll like Mind, Body, & Soul

September 9, 2004 - World Entertainment News Network
Dirrty singer Christina Aguilera is set to record a duet with British soul sensation Joss Stone.

The Soul Sessions star, 17, has spoken on the phone to the Aguilera about working together in the future but won't confirm when the collaboration will take place.

Stone explains, "I spoke to her really briefly the other day.

"I was talking to photographer David LaChapelle on the phone about my video and he said, 'Someone wants a word with you.'

"It was Christina. She told me she liked my voice and I asked her whether she'd like to do something together."

----------

BBC News Online entertainment staff

Stone has collaborated with Jagger on two tracks

Teenage soul singer Joss Stone has teamed up with rock legend Sir Mick Jagger to perform a Christmas duet.
The 17-year-old Mercury Music Prize nominee and 61-year-old Rolling Stone have recorded Lonely This Christmas, a 1974 number one by glam rockers Mud.

The pair have worked on the track at London's Abbey Road studios after coming together for a film project.

Stone also sings a version of Alfie, the title song of a remake of the 1960s Michael Caine movie starring Jude Law.

Alfie, written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, was a top 10 hit in 1966 for Cilla Black.

Stone's recording is said to be markedly different from the original, swapping its lush strings for contemporary beats.

Stone, whose debut album The Soul Sessions has been widely acclaimed, became involved after Jagger invited her to work on the Alfie project.

Hailing from an east Devon village, she has been described as "a white Aretha Franklin" and has two nominations for this month's Music of Black Origin (Mobo) awards.

Jagger has collaborated on the Alfie soundtrack with Dave Stewart, the former Eurythmics musician and a friend of the Rolling Stones singer.

Jagger sings vocals on the soundtrack's key song, Old Habits Die Hard, which the pair co-wrote.

They have also composed the main theme for the movie, which stars Jude Law in the role of the womanising lad-about-London made famous by Michael Caine in the 1966 original.

The remake, featuring Law's girlfriend Sienna Miller as well as Susan Sarandon and Marisa Tomei , is due out in the UK on 22 October.

A spokeswoman for Jagger said she could not comment on whether the Stone duet would be released as a Christmas single.

I got my Japanese import today and I love it. There was a bonus track and a hidden track to my surprise.  8O
I also went to buy an American cd because she's doing a free in-store performance with purchase of the cd at the Sherman Oaks Tower. I went at opening time because there were only 350 wristbands being given out with purchase to enter the show and I didn't want to miss out but it was surprisingly light traffic for her cd.

I think Vanessa should do something like that for the Harmonium release since it would probably create more sales for her. *hint hint* Plus it'd give me another chance to see and talk to her (obviously I want to get something out of it.)

Apparently her song for the Alfie soundtrack is to be released 10/19. I don't know if I'm buying it though. I might go see the movie to hear it first before I decide. I have a hard time buying entire CDs for 1 song. Singles maybe but not CDs.

Check out a few songs from her release 'The Soul Sessions'.

WOW, I DIDN'T KNOW SHE WAS only 16!!! DIES!!!
She's brilliant, I didn't much like the first song ...
But, she's only just starting to pick up here in the ass end of the world,
you had me is VERY radio friendly, so it's gainging momentum here .. it helps that Joss Stone is pretty!!!
Though they're promoting her with Katie Melua ... who's ok as well ...
I like Joss her albums great ... too much good music right now!!!

*dances crazily with Zeee* eeeeeeeeeeeeeee gud music :blob:

I love the first songs on her old album, but is the new one better?

I loved the new album, I bought  it last week.

her voice is amazing adn the songs are about all sorts of relationships, one time she´s after the guy, the other she wants space, then she brakes up, ya know....my favorite song is "right to be wrong" :D

Joss Stone at Seventeen

24.10.2004 By RUSSELL BAILLIE
Joss Stone is on a roll. She's somewhere in Los Angeles. Last night it was the Late Show with Jay Leno and tonight she's just come off the set of the Late, Late Show when we find her at the end of the phone, still buzzing.

Effectively she's released two albums in this part of the world in less than a year - the covers collection Soul Sessions and now the original set Mind Body & Soul. She's a busy gal and as she chats flat out, it's hard to reconcile her girlish Devon vowels with that terrific singing voice. But maybe that's because we're talking to the person that "Joss Stone" becomes off-stage ...

Sounds like they've got you working very hard.

Ohmigod. Yeah but it's cool.

But you'd be used to the hard work by now.

Kind of. You expect it now but you can't really get used to it. My head has got used to it but my body hasn't. I'm young and I'm growing at the same time so I get so tired. But I have to do it otherwise people wouldn't know I have an album out.

Down this end of the world Soul Sessions didn't come out until February or March and the new album is out now, not that long after.

Right it's mad. The Soul Sessions wasn't really meant to be an album. The idea when we went into it was to basically do an EP for which we'd have to do hardly any promo, just carry on making my album and chill out while they have that one. Just underground, with a little buzz. It was cool that people liked it.

It seems that 2 1/2 million people liked it.

Yeah it's kinda crazy.

Were you worried after Soul Sessions went, how the next one would be received. Did you think maybe you should wait a while?

No I didn't want everyone to think I was just a covers artist because, really, I'm not. I have things to say and I just so much wanted to do my own stuff.

The albums aren't a whole lot different soundwise.

I tried to make Mind Body & Soul a little bit more contemporary - not so, so, so old school. I liked that it had a Soul Sessions vibe because it wasn't, like, over-produced. It was done like it was in the 70s, that is how exactly we recorded it.

There was no auto-tune on anything, there wasn't on my second and there never will be on my third. I like it real. If you're not perfect - and I'm so far from perfect - I kind of like that.

You're credited with co-writes on most of the songs on the new one. Are you a natural songwriter?

I hope so. I'm just working it out right now. I love writing but I do get a little bit shy. When it's like the first time and let's say you're with Lamont Dozier [Motown songwriting legend] or Beau Dozier [his son], I was so shy man, I was like a little kid. I was just stupid. Because they are just amazing and I felt so stupid. But I tried and I put in my two quids worth and we definitely worked together on it, but I think I was a little bit too nervous.

What's the difference between Joss Stone and Jocelyn Stoker?

I don't know who this Joss Stone girl is. I don't know who the hell they are talking about ... ha ha.

Was it Joss Stone or Jocelyn Stoker who wrote the songs?

It was definitely Jocelyn Stoker. Joss Stone is the girl who turns up on stage and sings. The girl you are talking to right now is Joss Stoker. You know, I don't want to be Joss Stone too often. It's kind of bad. I find that some people turn into the artists they are trying to be.

If I went on stage and was like myself I wouldn't sing. That's who I turn into in between songs. I'll sing and I'm, like, I'm into my song I don't give a damn who's there, but when the music stops I'm like, "Oh shit what the [expletive] am I doing on this stage?"

If I had me now and me like five years ago - if they both met I swear to God me five years ago would slap me around the face and go "Joss get the hell off that stage. How embarrassing, what the hell are you doing?".

So you had to overcome stage fright?

Yeah. I would cry in between my shows "I don't want to do it Mum. Everyone is going to think I'm stupid", because that is what kids are like. When I was at school if I got up and sang they would knock me down so quick.

That's why I didn't, because I was so nervous and I didn't think I was a good singer. But my mum said "you just have to put on a different hat and be like 'this is what I do' and be confident with it, otherwise you are never going to be anything."

And what else can I do but sing? I don't want to go back to school. Don't make me go back to school. So I have to just get up there, stop being such a wuss and do it.

But I don't want to take that personality with me. That person has to be really over-confident and I find that over-confident people can be a real pain in the arse.

So maybe Joss Stone is more American than Jocelyn Stoker ...

Ha ha ha. I don't know. I've met some arrogant people in England too.

You're still just 17. Do you think it might have all happened a bit early for you.

No I don't think so. I think it would have been nice to chill out and be 17 and not do anything. But if I had carried on I would have got into a lot of trouble so I'm glad I've had something to occupy myself.

I'm glad that I can sing and somebody recognised it early because I know that I never would have gone to college. I hated school so much that I was just going to chill right out and that's not a good thing. I get bored real quick.

You've met a lot of famous people. Are there any that you are still impressed by afterwards?.

Yeah definitely Lamont Dozier. And there was James Brown - Ohmigod I was scared. I walked into the room and he's like a little guy. He's so cute, he's like a cute little man. I really liked him and he was so nice and I was really nervous to be in there with him. I do get a little starstruck but it only really lasts for a couple of seconds.

Does it worry you at all people might not take you seriously because of your age and that you're a white girl from England singing black American music?

No. There's no point in worrying about that. I can't change that I'm 17 and that I'm white and that I'm English, but the thing is I don't want to change it and I don't want to get old quick. I'm cool being 17.

I think people who care about image and don't really listen to the music - they really look at those things but I know the people who just want to listen to music don't really give a damn. So it really doesn't matter to me.

I heard on the radio here a few days ago that she´d need to take a break cuz if she kept singing like she does now she would get something ( I forgot what) in her vocal chords, so she´d take a li l vacation....was that just a rumor then?

no that's true, they said she might get nodules if she kept singing so much and I was concerned that she would cancel but she still did the show. I think she did tune it down a little. I think she'll probably reduce her schedule now.

STONE TO BE NEXT GAP GIRL

JOSS STONE

British soul singer JOSS STONE will model clothing company GAP's autumn range in a series of TV, magazine and billboard advertisements.

The YOU HAD ME beauty will follow in the footsteps of MADONNA, ORLANDO BLOOM, SARAH JESSICA PARKER and MISSY ELLIOT in promoting Gap.

Stone says, "I'm really excited. I'm supposed to be taking some time off. But I'm still writing and I have this Gap advert lined up."

Stone fills the Gap

(BANG) - Joss Stone is the new face of GAP.

The teenage soul sensation is following in the footsteps of idols Madonna, Sarah Jessica Parker and Missy Elliot, as a star model for the clothing chain store.

The move will see the 17-year-old advertising the shop's Autumn range on billboards, magazine and TV.

The beautiful blonde, who was nominated at the prestigious Grammys earlier this year, said: "I'm really excited. I was supposed to be taking some time off but I've got so much to do."

Meanwhile, the star says she still finds it weird that people recognise her when she's in her UK homeland.

Joss, who has been a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, says she accepts she's famous in America but can't understand her fame in her native country.

She said: "I spend a lot of time in America and I definitely feel quite famous there. It's strange but I always assume no-one knows who I am in my homeland."

She's cool... I like her songs... liked her new video SPOILED or something, but the thing is.....

Tipow, para mim, ela parece uma garota bem nervosa.. no tom de brincadeira, mas a aprencia que ela dá é essa para mim...

It's the most fuckedup cover of the White Stripes debut single.

For your first single, be original.

The whole album is covers......

I just found out I was able to capture these so I did. These performances are different from most of her others because it's not with her current band and there are no backup vocals. I have 2 links for each since some people are limited to one or the other.

I went to the Yahoo taping Monday and it was cool but Joss has bronchitis so it was a bit short. Joss looked awesome and seems to have lost weight.

Joss sang 5 songs and answered 6 questions. It should all be up but I don't know exactly when.

Her songs were Music, Tell Me 'Bout It, Girl They Won't Believe It, Right To Be Wrong, and Jet Lag.

I really like Music after hearing it live.

During the question portion in between questions when they were getting the cameras ready she remembered me and had a small conversation with me. Basically asked how I was and asked me if I missed her.

Here's my recap of the show at the House of Blues Wednesday.

I got there early and tried to watch soundcheck again but I only got to see a few minutes of the band playing until security made me leave so I went upstairs to have dinner.

Joss looked great and was wearing a Tina Turner type short sequined dress that was white with some silver, red, and yellow designs on it. The dress was almost too short considering how high the stage was. She could've flashed the whole front row if she wasn't careful. She came out wearing high heels but quickly decided she couldn't wear them safely and took them off and gave them to the 2 women beside me.

The show was pretty long considering Joss was really sick 2 days ago. Here's the songs she sang (in order):

Girls They Won't Believe It
Head Turner
Music
Put Your Hands On Me
Super Duper Love
Jet Lag
In The Arms Of My Baby
What Were We Thinking
Tell Me What We're Gonna Do Now
Tell Me'Bout It
Baby Baby Baby
Right To Be Wrong

There were a couple of times during the show when she sang a portion of a looking directly at me which was really cool.

I don't have pictures but I was right in front slightly off center and there was a security guy within 2 or 3 feet of me the entire show so there was no way to get a picture. The good thing about having security so close was that I asked him to get the setlist after the show and he ended up getting me the setlist that belonged to Joss.

It was a great show and the only bad part was I didn't get to meet her again and get a picture with her new hair color.

I went to the show last night and I got the setlist so here were the songs:
Girl They Won't Believe It
Headturner
Baby Baby Baby
Jet Lag
Arms Of My Baby
Super Duper Love
Bruised But Not Broken
Tell Me What We Gonna Do Now
Music
Big Ol' Game
Victim Of A Foolish Heart
Tell Me 'Bout It
Right To Be Wrong

It was a great show and Joss looked great. Her ankle apparently has healed fairly well because she moved around the stage with no signs of pain and even jumped up and down on it a couple of times. The wonders of youth.  :P
I stayed around after the show waiting to see Joss and as I was waiting the backup singers came out and I got pictures with them. Later on Joss came out, gave me a hug and signed my setlist and I took a picture with her with her new hair color. It was a great time.
