Title: Diets
Post by: loveplasticlove on February 14, 2004, 12:51:38 am
Anyone on a diet?

Has anyone tried any certain diets?

I'm on atkins right now and its not too tough for me to do.  Its my 12th day.  I hope to stay on it for several months...

Diets are bad for ya...

BUT! if you're on Atkins, remeber to exercise, because all you're doing is losing muscle. (or at least that is what we learned in Foods class.)

Speaking of "muscle," my Dad decided to get his stash back out and do crack again, 'cause it's baseball season/softball for me, and he got my weights, and he was all showing me how lift them different ways to work different arm "muscles." It was so weird, he's never done that before. I was like, "Do you want to leave, now?" Then he was showing me how to throw a punch - O_o

But, sorry for that being a bit off topic, Nicole. :X

The Atkins diet is stupid.....

all you eat is like beef and vegis and then you lose the weight twice as fast because your body can break down meat and veggies faster than carbs......but after you lose the weight once you start eating carbs again you gain the weight twice as fast...so you need to stay on that forever... or until your artires clog and you die. That's what happened to Mr. Atkins, no? Nice diet.

I'm on this diet where you eat 6 breads a day....6 meats....all the vegs you want....3 milks.....3 fruits and it's a healthy diet....add with exercise and you should lose 2 pounds a week...

and I heard that the points diet was really terrific too.

Really????Yeah..ok he did....but in the diet you can eat a ton of bacon and food and beef and meat and stuff and doesn't that clog arteries? if he didn't have a head injury he would have died from a clogged heart.

Holy christ almighty you are a MORON.

Normally, I have you on ignore so I don't have to read this kind of stupidity and just flat out misinformation.... but this time I wasn't logged in.  So I HAD to read your message cause they aren't blocked.

And then I HAD to respond... BECAUSE you are SOOOOO amazing misinformed I really don't want people to think this is even close to being true.

Here's the break down on why the Atkins diet works the way it does.

Your body burns sugar first.  Why? Because it is easier to burn and is a faster energy source.  Fat burns slowly and is easier to store.  The problem with sugars though is that when your body burns them it gets a short term energy boost and then when it runs out of sugars you get tired and yous tart getting cravings for more sugars.  So typically you eat more sugars to wake yourself back up.

If you remove sugars from your diet, then your body is forced to burn the fats and protiens instead of the sugars.  This means your body maintains a constant energy level instead of a flux AND it means your body consums its own fat and protien sources when it runs out of new sources.

This means muscle and fat.  Normally, it's fat first then muscle.  So while Joey is correct, his statement is kind of misleading.

The atkins diet itself, however, says VERY CLEARLY that you should NOT maintain an all fat and protien diet long term.  In fact, you are specifically instructed to slowly phase a limited amount of sugars and carbs BACK into your diet.  You are also instructed to take breaks from the diet every few months.

Therefore, the atkins diet is not JUST a short term diet to lose weight, it is an entire lifestyle change and it something you can maintain your ENTIRE LIFE.

When done properly, there is no evidence that it in any way contributes to heart problems.

Edit: In before "sayyouwould" responds with a stupid "yeah, we'll your a meanie" post.

Edit Edit: FATS ONLY CLOG YOUR ARTERIES IF YOU DONT BURN THEM!

Have u read "The South Beach Diet" ?
My dad is doing that and he lost some good amount of weight. And he's a cardiologist specialized in nutritology, so I count his opinion   and he said that except about some things, like the way the Dr.Agnston disss carrots lol, it's a really good option. I read that, and I'm still worried bout the FASE 1 of that diet, it has loooots of restriction, but in a simple way what can I say?, it really makes ur blood healthier :)

But the most recomended is I think the good old 1200 calories a day is the best diet, eat the right amount o food accordin to the food piramid, cut the bad fat  ;) put that and some exercices like walking for an hour or at least 30 min everyday and u'll loose regularly weight, not fast, but constantly, and u'll b healthy.  ;)

I have a lot of friend's and family friends on atkins, it works well!
I dont have the self dicipline to go on a structured diet... but I am trying to cut back and eat more healthy. So far I've been pretty good! I had to put my weight down for my graduation gown, and I put 10 lbs less than I am, that way I have to loose the weight by June! It's a way to drive me... lol.

hmmm south beach diet? I don't know what that one is about!

And Atkins died because he slipped and fell on an icy sidewalk....
I wondered why so many people dog on this diet... and then someone in livejournal made an interesting point that I will include below...

Quote
I thoroughly believe...
that the reason that there is such 'bad press' about the Atkins diet, all these tv/news specials about it, and constant slagging of it is: IT's FREE.

Sure, the food choices may be more expensive than the convenience garbage we used to eat, but that money didn't end up in Dr. Atkins' pocket. Yes, some supplements we choose to take can be costly, but you don't *have to* take them.. and again, no more money in Atkins' pocket. Money off his books? Sure.. but you can get the info for free easily enough.

I've noticed that a lot these tv news reports and specials are sponsored by weight watchers and other diet plans/pills etc. As per usual, it's 80% propaganda and 20% 'selected' facts.

People need to think for themselves, do their own research and wise up a bit.

/ rant, sorry.

Both of my bosses are on Southbeach. Its like a toned down version of atkins. you can have some carbs after the first two weeks, and it stresses healthier meats and fats. My bosses are physical therapists and very knowledgeable in physiology so I respect their opinion when they say its a good system. It worked for them.

However, I personally am sick of hearing about how evil carbs are. I looooooooooove carbs! They are my friends.

Anyway, i have weened myself completely off fizzy drinks and junk food (well almost the junk food!)- and now i drink only water, and i feel much better for it. I get really tired and i find that stopping junk food and fizzy drinks has really helped. I also east celery when i want junk food cos it has the same crunch you want from that craaap.

the hardest part about atkins for me is the no fruit juice and almost no fruit (other than strawberries) --- i only drank juice before - it's the most painful part -

but crystal light isn't that bad --- the strawberry kiwi is the best - too bad the grocery store i go to stopped carrying it - URGH!

I love the atkins candy - low carb russell stovers - it is so yummy - i think yummier than real candy --- however the rest of the brands taste like garbage....

the ice creams aren't bad - just stay away from "le carb" - yuck...

the atkins muffin mix isnt bad at all - just be aware it has 8 carbs per muffin ... and i am on 20 carbs a day so thats a lot for one little muffin...

i guess thats all i have to say now -

the atkins bagels made me ill --- and i heard that other people have gotten upset stomachs from them too

the muffin mix was a pass down from a friend that went off atkins - i am not sure how much they are - but pretty sure they aren't eight dollars

the atkins brand ice cream bars are yummy the vanilla and fudge ones are my fave -- i also love carb smart strawberry ice cream and carb smart fudge bars .... the bars are better than the cartons because you know the exact amount of the portion you are eating and dont have to measure anything

Be careful, 'nicole'.  The induction period is what it is, and is the length it is, for a reason.  it isn't healthy long term.

Eh.... fruit is healthy because of all the good stuff that comes with the sugars (vitamins, iron, etc).  But fruit is still a LOT of sugar.  That being said, if you are gonna eat sugar, it's the best kind.

People used to say grains and breads were really healthy too.... but they are actually nothing but pure sugar.  Yes, fat free and all that.  But still pure sugars.

People used to say fat was bad for you, but then we discovered there are like 5 different kinds of fats and some are good and some aren't.

Vegetables, however, are still good for you :)

Now i have had more i think i like them more. They tasted weird at first because i was like "my teeeeeeeeeeeeeth"- my dad was sure they'd explode in the fridge. But yes, a healthy alternative to me eating bowls and bowls of Lemon Curd ice cream *dies*.

I know i go on about it, but i just actually couldn't believe the size of the portions there- it was just absoloutely mad. Like why would you want that much to eat!?

Anyway, i have weened myself completely off fizzy drinks and junk food (well almost the junk food!)- and now i drink only water, and i feel much better for it. I get really tired and i find that stopping junk food and fizzy drinks has really helped. I also east celery when i want junk food cos it has the same crunch you want from that craaap.

lol, the girl from Bend It Like Beckham, Parminder Nagra, her character on ER mentioned that about 'Americans and their large portions- everything is "supersized" ' and it's true with like 60% of the populaytion owerweight. -_-

"You might wonder why we use Splenda® brand sweetener in our products. The answer is simple: we prefer Splenda® because for us, it doesn't produce the "intestinal distress" that is common with many products made with sugar-alcohols!"

Stephie,  This is not a "disagree" vs "agree" thing because this is not my opinion.  This is something addiction specialists will tell you.  I am not a diet expert so I have no actual opinion of my own on this.  I just have regurgitated info I have read over the years.

That said, this notion of using something that is off your diet as a "reward" has been pretty well decried as bad for YEARS.  For example, if an alcoholic goes 6 months without a drink, does he or she reward themselves with a beer?  When your toilet train your dog do you reward him by letting him pee in the bedroom?  Why do these come across as "duh" but people think it is ok to reward themselves on their diets by eating outside of the diet?  This is counterproductive.

Using food as a reward is listed on almost every website you find as a sign of an eating disorder.

As soon as you start rewarding yourself with foods you know you aren't supposed to be eating then you are also demonstrating that you are on a temporary diet and not an actual lifestyle change.  This is bad because it strongly suggests that you will just go back to eating poorly as soon as you hit your target weight.

Rewards are ok.  But the reward should never be counterproductive to the goal.  That is  motivation theory 101.

I think that out of everything I've tried (and I have tried just about EVERYTHING) WeightWatchers is the best.  My mom joined when it was still free and the points system was just starting out.  The best part is, you can eat whatever you want!  Just budget what you eat so you don't go over your points.  Like, if you want a Grilled cheese sandwich and chocolate cake, you can have it, it just cost you 20 points though.  So, if you are allowed 24 points a day, you only have 4 points left ot eat foods worth 0 points (like veggies and salad).  It's easy, if you can add, you can do it.  Mostly, it's common sense and eating in moderation, only tailored into a better system for people like me.  It really does work.

Truth.  But most people who NEED to diet can't limit themselves like that.  If they could, they wouldn't need to diet.  And there is the flaw in the entire system.

Post by: loveplasticlove on February 24, 2004, 06:01:16 am
I'd have to say that I agree with Andrew on the whole reward system.  I have not cheated so far and I don't want to because I know that I might end up feeling bad and eat my whole kitchen OR I will realize what I'm missing out on and again eat my whole kitchen.  If I want to reward myself... I'mm going to MAC or maybe even buy smaller clothes once there is that difference!

And if you eat a major carb like that... your body will hold onto it because it knows it might not get more carbs like that for a while and you will gain water weight.

yep, she lost so much weight, and she's been able to keep almost all of it off! The important thing to remember is that you have to excerisce. have to have to. you can diet till the cows come home, but without movement you can still not be fit.

And i have to agree with Steph that just because you 'reward' yourself doesn't necessarily mean that you're starting an eating disorder. My mom rewards herself with doughnuts every once in a while, but does that mean she has an eating disorder? no. i think that it depends on the case and on the person. you know? like, if a person is really obsessing over what they eat and it's all they think about then fine, but if it's someone making healthy, conscious decisions about what they eat, then it's fine to say they're rewarding themselves without assuming that it's the first sign to an eating disorder. just my opinion though

weight watchers counting points seems just like what i do - only with carbs --- I can have 20 carbs - so if i eat 18 carbs at lunch by eating "whatever has 18 carbs" - then for dinner i can only have meat and carb free veggies
same deal - i can have whatever i want

popcorn in one cup of pop corn there are 14 carbs - so i can have half a cup and limit the rest of my carbs --- that way i don't crave the things i miss because i can eat them in small portions (except like french fries - that's an obvious no)

Lost two pounds! and i haven't even done my pilates dvd yet! i have gym now though, so that could be why :-P

anyways, i've decided to do 10-15 minutes of pilates every morning before school to get me started and give me more energy, and 10-15 every night after school, every day, or as consistantly as i can!

i'm starting this new diet today... and it's my first one, so wish me luck! i dont think i'll stick to it, haha, but we'll see!
i forgot what it's called... but it's:
3/16 - 3/19: fruits ('cept banannas)
3/20-3/23: Vegetables + baked potatos
3/24-3/27: Vegetables + fruit ('cept no baked potatos or banannas)
3/28-3/31: ONLY banannas (i'm not a bananna fan, so if i'm irritable on those days... you know why, haha)
4/1-4/4: beef + tomatos
4/5-4/8: only beef
4/9-4/12: only rice (i can pretend i'm on survivor!)

Ehhh... seems bad... But it's REALLY worked for my mom and my grandparents, and Ive got their genes... so it'll probably work for me too! *crosses fingers*  :?

hmmm... easy? lol, i dont know, nothin but fruit and veggies for half a month will be hard for me... and then no fruits of veggies for the 2nd half will be hard too

hmmm... true... but what i meant was at least there's no  recipies to follow or anything. you know exactly what you can and can't have.

Post by: Holly on March 16, 2004, 06:30:58 pm
yeah... true!
eh... i just tried only eating fruit and it didnt work!! I ate a huge pile of strawberries, blueberries, and mango, thinking that if I ate enough i'd feel full! but nope... now i just feel naucious and hungry, lol. and if i feel this way on the first day... how am i going to feel later?
so i dont think i can do that strict of a diet without feeling sick all the time... but i figure that if I only eat those foods i listed and cut out the carbohydrates, sweets and fats it'd be ok. I'm not looking to loose ALOT of weight, only about 10 pounds.

New Years Day I hopped on the scales and was 2.5kg lighter than my twin
brother :o but I still need to get into shape so I've got back on my bike

Unfortunately on Monday I came off and skided along a concrete sidewalk
for almost 5 yards 8O I was doing about 15mph and still had another 45%
of my ride to complete! Perhaps I'll stop at the Baskin Robins next time :D

The customers there seemed to be enjoying their ice cream despite my off
right in front of them  I even used a Baskin Robins sundae spoon to put
my chain back on  I hope to be back in the saddle again this Monday 8)

I was really afraid of the freshman 15 (everyone says that most people gain 15 pounds their first year of college.) so I wanted to be careful. I was 150 when i started college... i wasn't careful at all about what i ate. i was shocked when i came home from xmas break and found i lost 15 pounds. I hadnt weighed myself in a few months. i definitely like the results of it, people have noticed and tell me i look way better. so i decided maybe a diet and working out would be good. I've lost 3 more pounds since i came back! hopefully i can keep that up next semester. I rarely eat fatening food and just eat less in general... i can't stick to a diet with strict rules, so we'll see how this goes.

I gained weight. Sux because I enjoy being a totally active, outdoor person and winter just kills me.

I need to move...
and you can read that to mean I need to live in a place where there is no winter
or I need to find some time to exercise

Australia? Australia = no winter!!

Me = on a calorie diet ..
yeah yeah .. i'm on a diet .. I reallywanted to be skinny for once and for all ...
.. I was 59kg, somehow lost weight went down to 57 .. liked the feeling of feeling thin continued on a calories diet ..
5000 kilojoules .. or sthg like 1200 calories ...
It's all balanced .. as in no one core food type ...
I eat carbs ... in the form of cereal or rice mostly ...
and HEAPS of VEGETABLES!!
breakfast is cereal, and fruit
when I get hungry (if I get hungry .. I just don't seem to get hungry like this) I eat heaps of cucumbers and carrots and tomatoes, which also supplement lunch usually about a handful of some rice type dish
and dinner usually more rice and a bit of meat ... more salads etc
During the day there's some fruit and yogurt ... and heaps of coffee ...
ah and no food after 6.30pm ...
I'm now almost down to 53kg's .. only 3 more to go ... then I'll stop ...

I have to watch out for that as my parents often forget how long foods have
been left out before being refridgerated, and don't appreciate how short the
shelf life of Chaud Froid really is :? ...550 days w/o a sick day for me so far :D

Sadly I've gained weight. I can't help it.

Since I got a job at a Dairy Queen/Orange Julius I eat like everything there
I will never stop because I love soft serve ice cream not to mention other things....

but with practice hopefully I'll lose some weight again.
