Title: Windows RG (Really Good Edition)
Post by: Blake on March 25, 2004, 07:38:58 pm
This is probably one of the funniest things I have ever seen online.

A kid showed me this when we were supposed to be working on the newspaper...It's a flash site that makes fun of windows and it's crappyness. I laughed sooo hard! It might not be funny to everyone, but if you have a crappy computer with windows, I think you'll get it.

Go to word when you click it, and make sure to read the instructions, it's crazy funny!

In my time ive watched Mac, Linux, Unix, and Windows...all fail, all succumb to viruses, all have been hacked.  The real computer is in your hardware setup, not your OS. (and as always, the user!)  benchmark this  :P  1337

Errrr... name a Linux/Unix virus in the wild? Mac virus? Just about the only Mac viruses you will find date back to the system 7 days. The rest are Microsoft Office macro virii, which work well on any platform. Linux has never had a virus in the wild, to my knowledge. No Unix virus has been out in the wild since 1989.

BTW... if you are refering to Mac OS 9, nobody ever hacked it, despite a $10,000 reward for doing so.

And I disagree with your hardware comment. I have a K6-2 350 running FreeBSD acting as my firewall. It is far superior, in my opinion, to the 2.4 GHz P4 ISA Server at work.

You dont think there is a linux virus?  Linux is even less secure than Windows.  I couldnt even name all the viruses that affect linux, the amount is ridiculous.  OSX will become vulnerable as script junkies continue working.  Windows XP was untouchable for the first few months it was out, and is still pretty strong with security, My business fell over from nachi but not one XP machine was afflicted.  I have a  few OSX machines here and i had to re install OSX on one of them because it was CRASHING.  Im running a solid checkpoint firewall at my work, but a firewall isnt a standard user OS so i dont see what the heck that has to do with your ordinary windows, mac, or linux user.  Unix is unstable and lacks proprietary components.  I could go on all day.  I dont really give a crap what someone likes or uses, every system/OS is flawed somehow or another.  Maybe you just need more experience to start seeing this stuff

This is from Mike McCan who has written some linux script in his day:

An outright lie in the cases of someone who refers to various worms that
affect Windows machines (eg, much of the stuff you've been hearing about
recently) as 'viruses' and then tells others that Linux doesn't get such
'viruses'. If viruses includes worms (and by popular definition, it does),
then Linux has many worms in the wild that attack it, such as ramen,
adore, etc.

The only truth of the matter is that Linux gets *many fewer* 'viruses'
because:
* New files created on a Unix system cannot be executable
* More secure defaults (more ports blocked off by default, default users
not having root privileges)
* A general culture of technical awareness amongst its users
* Its less popular than Windows (not a main reason, but this is true).

I could go hunt out articles ive seen on tech websites trashing linux and debating the loopholes in linux infrastructure.  But this is something i would expect you could do yourself since you are so technically advanced.

You are right that there are Linux viruses, even though I stated otherwise beforehand. However, they are all very old and there haven't been any like them for a long time. That, or they target Red Hat, which is probably one of the least secure distributions out there. Check out Debian's track record and you will see that it is significantly better.

Running Linux or BSD, I have never encountered anything like Stammer or Nachi. In fact, I've never ran into any security problems at all with my *nix boxen. I can't say that for the 2k/XP/2003 boxen I work on.

Also, in the quote you gave after your original post, you outline many of the reasons why Linux is significantly more secure than Windows. However, the final point is not relevant in the server world, where Apache on Linux makes up about 60% of the web server market.

Mac OS X has been out for fifteen years in one form or another and as of yet, there has not been a single virus for it in the wild. NT is slightly younger and the number of viruses numbers in the hundreds of thousands. This is, of course, ignoring the many viruses that were written for Windows 9x.

I have a  few OSX machines here and i had to re install OSX on one of them because it was CRASHING.

I shall then provide you with a counterexample. I have had this laptop for nearly a year and it has been running the latest versions of Mac OS X. It has only crashed four times for reasons I couldn't attribute to my own hacking of the OS.

Regardless, instability is not directly related to security. Most of the time, instability on Mac OS X is related to users modding the system. If you don't install crap that changes out core parts of the OS, you're fine.

It doesn't. You said that computers were all about hardware. I was stating that hardware is only important in that it provides enough resources for good software to do its job effectively.

Unix is unstable

*ahem*

[khristine:~] wlewis% uptime
 7:46PM  up 42 days, 20:10, 1 user, load averages: 0.01, 0.05, 0.00

That is only because I had an outage and this server isn't important enough to me to have a UPS.

and lacks proprietary components.

How is that a good thing? Security through obscurity?

Quote from: "Logikal X"
I could go on all day.

As can I.

every system/OS is flawed somehow or another.

Agreed. Some, however, are more flawed than others.

I could also go hunt down articles debunking those articles.

Trashing an OS is easy to do. Big deal. I did it to Windows and you certainly hold a different opinion of it than I do.

Loopholes in Linux infrastructure? Such as? Flaws in NUMA? Scheduling? ALSA?

Most of the objections to Linux are based on the dislike of certain archetectures, such as an intense hatred of monolithic kernels. As far as implementing these designs goes, the code is rather good.

LOL!

That song is awesome. And you stole from me.

I also have an enlarged sig for the LPU and other boards like the VCMB, although I don't really use it much on the VCMB..

Yeah I'm not big on fancy sigs...homemade crappers are the best!

I <3 Pharrell...Yeah that was dumb.

The first time I saw that I laughed so hard I cried.  I couldn't stop for like half an hour.  My sides hurt from laughing so hard.  I'm glad others out there find it just as funny.  :D

The link for WinRG is out of date, but it is still available from a number of "mirror" sites.

Here's one for example:
