Yes I need help on my Algebra homework, lol I sware I'm getting a friggin headake trying to figure these out. So all you smart people, help me out please! Some of these questions don't even have to do with Algebra so I'm all WTF!? 8O
1st question: How can two fathers & two sons divide three automobiles among themselves with each receiving one?
2nd question: I have two U.S. coins in my hand which total fifty-five cents. One is not a nickel. What are the coins?
3rd question: Two men are playing chess. They played five games and each man won the same number of games with no ties. how is this possible?
4th question: Why can't a man living in St. Louis be buried in Illinois? (WTF!?)
5th question: If dirt wighs 100 ib. per cubic foot, what is the weight of dirt in a hole three feet sqare by two feet deep?
6th question: If you had only one match and entered a dark room which there was a kerosene lamp, an oil burner, and a wood burning stove, which would you light first?
last question: Is there a fourth of July in England? (WTF does that have to do with Algebra!?)
-
1st question: How can two fathers & two sons divide three automobiles among themselves with each receiving one?
It's the grandfather, who is the father of the father of the son. In total, there are three people, but the grandon's name is John. The Middle one's name is Ed. And the Grandfather is Tom.
Tom is Ed's FATHER.
Ed is John's FATHER. Ed is Tom's SON.
John is Ed's SON.
Two sons, two fathers.
2nd question: I have two U.S. coins in my hand which total fifty-five cents. One is not a nickel. What are the coins?
A quarter and the long, lost 30 cents coin :\
3rd question: Two men are playing chess. They played five games and each man won the same number of games with no ties. how is this possible?
They're on a team O_o
4th question: Why can't a man living in St. Louis be buried in Illinois? (WTF!?)
Why would they bury a living man? ;)
6th question: If you had only one match and entered a dark room which there was a kerosene lamp, an oil burner, and a wood burning stove, which would you light first?
The lamp, I suppose. Then light everything else.
last question: Is there a fourth of July in England?
Just say YES. There is a July 4.
-
Why would they bury a living man?
OMG! Duh!!! I'm so dumb. But I still don't get how that is an Algebra question, but okay, lol
Thanks for all the help! :)
-
1st question: How can two fathers & two sons divide three automobiles among themselves with each receiving one?
three generations
2nd question: I have two U.S. coins in my hand which total fifty-five cents. One is not a nickel. What are the coins?
one is a nickel, the other is a 50c piece. (the 50c piece is not a nickel)
3rd question: Two men are playing chess. They played five games and each man won the same number of games with no ties. how is this possible?
they each won 2 games and are currently playing the 5th.
4th question: Why can't a man living in St. Louis be buried in Illinois? (WTF!?)
see above post
5th question: If dirt wighs 100 ib. per cubic foot, what is the weight of dirt in a hole three feet sqare by two feet deep?
ZERO, there's no dirt in a hole.
6th question: If you had only one match and entered a dark room which there was a kerosene lamp, an oil burner, and a wood burning stove, which would you light first?
I'd flip the light switch
last question: Is there a fourth of July in England? (WTF does that have to do with Algebra!?)
yes but its not a holiday
-
Thanks Kev!
-
6th question: If you had only one match and entered a dark room which there was a kerosene lamp, an oil burner, and a wood burning stove, which would you light first?
laura laura laura! i'm positive about this one. light the MATCH first! :-)

Oh I have some more questions, lol these are basically trick questions, but on the top of the paper it says "solving problems with polynomials" we haven't learned half of this stuff in forever, totally forgot how to do this. These are my last ones for sure. 8)
1st question: Time bought some 25 cents and some 19 cents stamps. He paid $7.60 for 28 stamps. How many of each type of stamp did he buy?
2nd question: Tickets for the school concert were $3 and $2. If 245 tickets were sold for a total of $630, how much of each kind were sold?
3rd question: David has 11 coins, some quarters and some dimes. If the coins have a value of $1.55, how many of each kind are there?
4th question: Find the perimeter of a rectangle if its length is (4c+7) units and its width is (c-3) units.
last question: Which has the greater area, a square with sides each (x+2) units long or a rectangle with length (x+4) units and width x units?
That's all I need help with. Usually we do all our work in class but we had a sub & the sub didn't look like he knew what he was doing so I need major help with this, lol

Okay! I'll go with that answer! Thanks kelley! :D

4th question: Find the perimeter of a rectangle if its length is (4c+7) units and its width is (c-3) units.
last question: Which has the greater area, a square with sides each (x+2) units long or a rectangle with length (x+4) units and width x units?
l
well I know how to do the first 3, but not at the moment lol...so...
Can't do the 4th one, i forgot how...
okay...and
(x+2)(x+2)= x*+4x+4 (* being a square)
(x+4)(x)= x*+4x.
so I am assuming that the (x+2) is greater.
-
2nd question: Tickets for the school concert were $3 and $2. If 245 tickets were sold for a total of $630, how much of each kind were sold?
3x+2y=630
x+y=245
x=140 y=105.
p.s. you do that for 1-3...and to help you out.....
*EDIT*
y=245-x so you'd have (3x)+[2(245-x)]=630
3x+490-2x=630
x=140
3(140)+2y=630
420+2y=630
2y=210
y=105
-
removed since it's plain BS 8)
-
4th question: Find the perimeter of a rectangle if its length is (4c+7) units and its width is (c-3) units.
Perimeter of a rectangle = length x width
=(4c+7)(c-3)
First 4c squared
Outside -12c
Inside +7c
Last -21
Tidy Up:
4c2-12c+7c-21
4c2-5c-21
that's good and all but she didn't ask for area....

2(c-3)+2(4c+7)
2c-6+8c+14
10c+8

omg thank you so much Limey! You really helped me out with the 2nd question, I actually understand it now! thank you!
And thanks for the last question also! I'm shocked I understand this now, somewhat more than I did lol I never thought i'd get this stuff.
And I lied people... I have one more main problem that I need help with and another load of damned trick questions, darnit lol 6 questions plus the main one, different worksheet, same concept tho. So I will post in a sec.
And thanks for everyones help! You have no idea how much I appreciate this! :)
-
As I said in my last post... another question. The main one on the front page. I tried this one, I kept going over it like a zillion times but I just could not get it. I think I got who the officer is, I think it's Smith, but lemme post the question.
Clark, Jones, Morgan, and Smith are four people whose occupations are salesperson, pharmacist, grocer, and police officer, though not necessairly in that order. Use the following statements to determine each person's occupation.
1. Clark and Jones are neighbors and take turns driving each other to work.
2. The grocer makes more money than Morgan.
3. Clark beats Smith regularly at bowling.
4. The salesperson always walks to work.
5. The police officer does not live near Clark.
6. The only time Morgan and the police officer ever met was when Morgan was stopped for speeding.
7. The grocer doesn't bowl.
Clark
Jones
Morgan
Smith
Which is the salesperson, pharmacist, grocer, and police officer?
-

okay apparently neither Clark nor Jones is a salesperson.
Morgan is not a grocer.
Clark is not the police officer.
Jones is not the police officer.
Morgan is not a police officer.
okay Clark and Smith are not grocers.
police officer-Smith.
pharmacist-Clark.
grocer- Jones.
Sales person- Morgan.
-
ahh so I was right on the Smith one, lol thanks Limey!
Okay for those of you who are still up to helpin me out, here are 6 more questions, then I SWARE I'm done after this, haha.
And I have looked at all the problems, & usually I'm good with this stuff but I suck at these worksheets esp. when we had a sub the day we got them, ack! Okay, here goes...
1. Bill can paint a closet in 2 hours. Bob can paint the same closet in 3 hours. How long will it take them to paint the closet working together? (I'm guessing 1 hour, or an hour & a half?)
2. Paul can mow the grass in 50 minutes, but it takes Dan three times as long. How long will it take them to mow the grass if they work together?
3. Using 1 drain, a swimming pool can be emptied in 45 minutes. Using a different drain, the job requires 1 hour and 15 minutes. How long will it take if both drains are opened?
4. One pipe can fill a tank in 4 hours. A second pipe also requires 4 hours, but a third needs three hours. How long will it take to fill the tank if all three pipes are open?
5. From 6ab-2ac+5bc, take 10ab-2bc+3ac
6. Find the perimeter of a rectangle if its length is (4c+7) units and its width is (c-3) units.
7. David has 11 coins, some quarters and some dimes. If the coins have a value of $1.55, how many of each kind are there?
The last two are from the other worksheet, couldn't figure those out either.
lol I bet I will be the only one in my class with both worksheets fully done, haha no one else in my class had a clue how to do these either.
Thanks guys!

5) -4ab-5ac+7bc
6) 10c + 8
7) 3 quarters and 8 dimes.
-
Thanks Tricia!
-
2. Paul can mow the grass in 50 minutes, but it takes Dan three times as long. How long will it take them to mow the grass if they work together?
50 minutes...Dan fell in the pool and that's why they're draining it in problem #3!
actually, I would be interested in knowing the answer myself...
-
I beg to differ. The grocer was Clark. The pharmacist was Morgan. The salesman was Smith and the police officer was Jones.
1. Bill can paint a closet in 2 hours. Bob can paint the same closet in 3 hours. How long will it take them to paint the closet working together? (I'm guessing 1 hour, or an hour & a half?)
I think 1:30. :\
Don't make fun of me; I'm from KY.
-
lol @ Limey.
-
I beg to differ. The grocer was Clark. The pharmacist was Morgan. The salesman was Smith and the police officer was Jones.
Unfortunatley, you're wrong.
-
Hey now! I don't want any of that negative talk. Let me think about how I got my answer and I'll prove you wrong. Just wait!
-
I think Limey was right. Because I was thinking that Smith was the officer & that's what Limey said also, so if that was right, I think the rest of his answer were right. Could be wrong tho...?
-
*hides*
That's what I meant ;(
Do you have more that aren't as math-related as the most recent ones you've posted? Because I'm definitely not good at Math.
-
nope
joe is right
-
:\
-
I only have a couple more that need to be answered, so i'll post those again 8)
Using 1 drain, a swimming pool can be emptied in 45 minutes. Using a different drain, the job requires 1 hour and 15 minutes. How long will it take if both drains are opened?
next question: One pipe can fill a tank in 4 hours. A second pipe also requires 4 hours, but a third needs three hours. How long will it take to fill the tank if all three pipes are open?
-
Oh & one last one I forgot:
Tim bought some 25 cent and some 29 cent stamps. He paid $7.60 for 28 stamps. How many of each type of stamp did he buy?
-
10 x .29 = 2.90
18 x .25 = 4.50
so yeah...28 stamps...7.60
-
Thanks Tricia!
-
Those questions are just plain silly! lol, do you have exam questions like that!?
And yes of course we have a fourth of july, whoever set that question is as thick as a plank.
-

3rd question: Two men are playing chess. They played five games and each man won the same number of games with no ties. how is this possible?
5th question: If dirt wighs 100 ib. per cubic foot, what is the weight of dirt in a hole three feet sqare by two feet deep?
you dont get dirt in a hole because a hole is empty space.
6th question: If you had only one match and entered a dark room which there was a kerosene lamp, an oil burner, and a wood burning stove, which would you light first?
youd light the match 1st because all the rest need fire to start with.
-

And yes of course we have a fourth of july, whoever set that question is as thick as a plank.
I sure hope we don't have exam questions like that! lol I think these were just worksheets cuz of having a sub, lol
So you guys do have a fourth of july? haha okay I'll go back & change my answer, but before I do, this may be a stupid question, but is it a holiday like it is here? lol
-
So you guys do have a fourth of july? haha okay I'll go back & change my answer, but before I do, this may be a stupid question, but is it a holiday like it is here? lol
Yes we do have a 4th of july but no it isn't a holiday over here.
I have problem solver if anyone wants to try it - it's not that hard.
U2 CONCERT
There are no tricks - this is a straight forward problem. This is supposed to be one of the questions which potential Microsoft employees are asked.
U2 have a concert that starts in 17 minutes and they must all cross a bridge to get there. All four men begin on the same side of the bridge. You must help them across to the other side. It is night. There is one flashlight.
A maximum of two people can cross at one time. Any party that crosses the bridge, either 1 or 2 people, must have the flashlight with them. The flashlight must be carried back and forth, it cannot be thrown, etc. Each band member walks at a different speed. A pair must walk together at the rate of the slower man's pace:
* Bono: - 1 minute to cross
* Edge: - 2 minutes to cross
* Adam: - 5 minutes to cross
* Larry: - 10 minutes to cross
For example: if Bono and Larry walk across first, 10 minutes have elapsed by the time they get to the other side of the bridge. If Larry then returns with the flashlight, a total of 20 minutes have passed and you have failed the mission.
There is no trick to this. It is a simple movement of resources in the appropriate order. Microsoft expects you to answer this question in under 5 minutes!
-

So you guys do have a fourth of july? haha okay I'll go back & change my answer, but before I do, this may be a stupid question, but is it a holiday like it is here? lol
that was answered...like twice...
and the reason it's a holiday here is because it's Independence Day...It's not some magical day where the rest of the world skips that day and gets to...I don't know, sleep?...
And if you want to know about Independence Day, that would be in a history book.

1. Bill can paint a closet in 2 hours. Bob can paint the same closet in 3 hours. How long will it take them to paint the closet working together? (I'm guessing 1 hour, or an hour & a half?)
Ok, this is about reciprocals.
If Bill can paint a closet in two hours, he can paint half a closet an hour right?
And if Bob can paint one in 3 hours, he can paint a third of a closet an hour.
Working together they can paint 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6 of a closet an hour.
To find how many hours they take to paint the whole closet divide:
the number of closets to be painted/the number they can paint in an hour This is: 1/(5/6) = 6/5 of an hour = 1.2 hours = 1 hour and 12 minutes
The principle is exactly the same for the grass mowing one and pool draining one.
Hope that helps (and makes sense!)
Ahh I have time to spare and I'm bored, I'll do another:
4. One pipe can fill a tank in 4 hours. A second pipe also requires 4 hours, but a third needs three hours. How long will it take to fill the tank if all three pipes are open?
Slightly harder, but the principle is exactly the same.
Call the first pipe A the second B, and the third C..
Both A and B can fill the tank in 4 hours, so in one hour they can fill a quarter of it.
Pipe C can fill a third of the tank in an hour.
So if they all work together they can fill 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/3 = 5/6 of the tank in an hour.
And actually I now realise the answer is gouing to be exactly the same as it was for the first question as we have the same fraction. 1 hr 12 mins
-
Answer to the concert question:
Bono and Edge walk first - 2 mins
Bono comes back - 2+1 = 3 mins
Adam and Larry walk - 2+1+10 = 13mins
Edge takes flashlight back - 2+1+10+2 = 15mins
Bono and Edge walk back together - 2+1+10+2+2 = 17mins
And if anyone actually likes them, then here's a few more problems along the lines of the 4th of July question:
1. A farmer had 17 sheep. all but 9 died, how many did he have left?
2. If you drive a bus from Boston to Washington D.C, with 42 people on board, you drop 3 off at the first stop and 6 get on, twice as many as got off at the first stop get on at the second and none get off, and half of those on the bus after the second stop get off at the third. On arrival in Washington, what is the driver's name?
3. If you take 2 apples from 5 apples how many do you have?
4. Write down the number: 15 thousand, 15 hundred and 15
5. Is it likely that the next Men's US Open Tennis champion will have more than the average number of arms?
6. Some months have 30 days, and some have 31, how many have 28 days?
-

THANKYOU LIMEY! Ugh, of course we have a bloody fourth of july, just like we have a fourth of every other month of the year. And no, of course its not a bloody holiday- because england didn't gain independance on that day, and never has.

Using 1 drain, a swimming pool can be emptied in 45 minutes. Using a different drain, the job requires 1 hour and 15 minutes. How long will it take if both drains are opened?
D1 empties pod in 45mins
D2 empties pod in 75mins
in 1 min-
D1 empties 1/45 of pod
D2 empties 1/75 of pod
together in 1 min 1/45 + 1/75 =
75/3375 + 45/3375 =
15/675 + 9/675 =
24/675 of the pod empties in 1 min
1/675 empties in 1min / 24 = 0.416666(r) so...
pool empties in 675x0.416666(r) = 28.125
675/24 = 28.125mins
= 28mins 71/2 secs
next question: One pipe can fill a tank in 4 hours. A second pipe also requires 4 hours, but a third needs three hours. How long will it take to fill the tank if all three pipes are open?
in 1 hour-
pipe A fills 1/4 tank
pipe B fills 1/4 tank
pipe C fills 1/3 tank
1/4 + 1/4 + 1/3 =
3/12 + 3/12 + 4/12 =
10/12 in 1 hour therefore,
1/12 tank filled in 6x12 mins
= 72mins or 1hour 12mins
edit: oops in my eagerness i didnt c this was answered.

4) 16,515
5) no
6) all of them
Yup, totally right except the first one, you're very good :)
-
Hey don't yell at me people! haha of course I know about Independence Day, thanks Joey but I don't need a history book. All I wanted to know is if England celebrated it. geez
Thanks for the help tho. I turned the worksheets in this morning during class.
-
LOL...I'm retarded and have overactive fingers.
The answer to one is 9!
-
Lol, I see, I have to say I didn't think you would ace the rest of them and get the simplest one wrong so I sorta guessed 'twas a mistype.
