"Vanessa CarltonThe Poet
"The first time I played for my friends, I made them face the wall.… It was too much for them to look at me," recalls Vanessa Carlton. Considering her success, however, Vanessa's had to get over her shyness--big time. Her platinum 2002 debut disc, Be Not Nobody, connected with fans in such a major way that many call themselves "Nessaholics." And now, as the 23-year-old delivers her heartfelt Harmonium (with guest drumming from Pharrell Williams and backup vocals from rock legend Stevie Nicks), the cult of Carlton grows stronger. The main reason? Vanessa's tunes are so emotionally on-target, it's like she read your diary. Take her single "White Houses": "It's about that chapter in life [starting at age] 17 where you go through all the rites of passage--losing your virginity, having terrible fights, falling in love, breaking up," she says. Luckily, Vanessa's love life is in that blissful phase: Her boyfriend, Stephan Jenkins (of Third Eye Blind fame), coproduced the record. Yet, as she explains, she won't walk a thousand miles for him: "I wouldn't want to be in love with a man who'd want me to walk that far for him!" --Jonathan Small"

OHHHHHHHHH!!!
wonderful article! thank you for posting!~
-
this makes me even more excited!
-
woot! just watched it! They labled her under "The Poet" which i guess is quite fitting!
Aaaand the most exciting part was when they talked about Harmonium, how hard she's been working on it and how it's going to be the biggest breakthrough or something like that of 2004! That's so awesome cuz now more people than just the ones who look on her website are going to know about it!
-
OH man.. the VC craze is starting.. slowly but surely.

Geez, this post I made on the VCMB is kinda related to that I guess. But it was posted like more than a month later from when she announced the song was going to be the first single. I haven't heard the song yet either.....
Do you remember when you were perhaps 14? 10?....pick an age......
I remember when I was 14. I was having one hell of a time. I was a freshman in high school. I had to adjust to having several classes rather than just one class in sixth grade where the teacher taught everything. I had to adjust to a whole new social system. I was going thru puberty and such things. I had to think about girls. I had to deal with being a freshman and growing up. I had all these not only new but also very complicated and confusing things to deal with.
I also remember being 18. I was just out of high school. I had to think about what I was going to do with my life. College? Long vacation? work? females? And a whole host of things. But most importantly, I had to learn about being an adult. I had all these new freedoms. I had all these new responsibilities.
Just like at 18, looking back on the problems you had at 14, being 31 gives you a certain perspective on being an adult. The same abilities which gives him the ability to give you so much more also gives him the ability to control you in a way. If that makes sense......

-
:D :D :D
I just saw the little clip on MTV. It was nice to hear what she said about staying true to herself as an artist, reaffirming what we know so well. Go Nessa!!! It's GREAT that they're saying that Harmonium is going to be the "big act" (or whatever the exact wording was) for 2004...I agree, the buildup for White Houses and Harmonium has officially begun!
By the way, the Olsen twins absolutely suck as hostesses for that program...and they way they stare ( 8O 8O ) at you...can you say "cold-blooded killer"?

Who did they connect V to?
-
Who did they connect V to?
They connected her to the guy who was right before her; some rapper whose name I don't know. They said something along the lines of Ordinary Day being shown on TRL the same day that his video was or something. The connections for most of them were rather pathetic, I thought (actually, the twins' voices were just really annoying), so I didn't pay much attention to those. Sorry I'm not more help. :?

OOOOh this makes me SO hopeful that some decent promotion is going to be done this time around. I don't think stars just somehow land randomly on that list, their PR must help them there- so in my mind that means vanessa's actually has a decent promo team this time. Its SO exciting! Lets just hope she doesn't suddenly fizzle out from here...
P.S if anyone has some screen captures i would be SO grateful because it won't arrive here until at least a billion years later.

Hey .. if nothing else, if the typical Pharell beat is on the track, radio is sure to love it LOL.
-
yay, i just saw it!!!
:D
nice!!

but what if the beats he likes to do don't go with V's music :?
oh well
we'll see
Amanda

I think it's kind of cool that she's collaborating with Pharell - I like Pharell and i think it could sound really cool!

I don't! I read this article in Elle here that said he was just HORRID. He refused to speak to the interviewer for the whole time, and just sat with his cap over his face making horrid comments every now and then. UGGGGH. He does produce good songs though.
-
ooh i have no idea what he's like personality wise - but i do enjoy his music.

well, im sure they will go with V's music because im sure she wouldnt let him do it if it sounded like crap. she has the say on her own album, u know? its not like shes gonna let him do whatever and produce a bad song. we know her/her music better than that.

i agreeeee. i'm kind of excited to hear what it's going to sound like! but yeah, i don't think vanessa would put out a song that wasn't good....
but you never know, there is the chance that it could suck....ah well, like amanda said, we'll have to wait and see!
-
im kinda thinking that this cd is aiming for more public appeal than the last one.
linsey ((guitar))
stevie ((vocals))
pharrel ((drums))
it just seems to me that V is aiming for what the people want more than what is her....but she said this cd is more of who she is as a musician.
but i am probably wrong.

well, i think she might be targeting a more broad audience. lindsey and stevie are both older artists and pharrel is a newer artist. so i think she might be trying to intrest older listeners and teens rather than the last album that was more towards teens because of the popish sounds of her singles
it also seems this album will be more acoustic
and no, Pharel isn't a bad drummer, it's just that i really loved Abe Laboriel Jr. on BNN. his interpretation of the music and style really showed in his playing on BNN and it contributed to the quality of the music immensely. he's one of the best drummers out there right now. i'd just rather have him on this next album. but we'll see what Pharel can do with Harmonium
Amanda
-
Yeah, in the end we will have to wait and see, but I just kind of thought it was funny because Danny and I always used to joke about how V would have the Neptunes on her next album, and now Pharrell will be on at least one track. That is what the  was for :).
-
I think it's one of those songs that she put on there because because she'd need a single. She said "Private Radio" was "booty-shakin'", which, considering the fact that Pharrel is on it, that will probably be the second single and the poppy song off the album. *hates poppy... most of it, at least*
