Title: Eurovision 2004
Post by: neos on May 08, 2004, 07:07:11 am
It takes place in Istanbul, Turkey, this year. There will be a qualifying round on May 12th (I think) and the final will be May 15th.

Have you heard your country's entry? Or any other entry? What do you think?

Personally, I think the Spanish entry is a whooooole load of crap! It's called "Para llenarme de ti", by Ramon (one of the winners of the Spanish Pop Idol - Operación Triunfo). I haven't heard any more entries though, and they all tend to be pretty cheesy don't they? ;)

OOOOOOOh Eurovision! My friend is having a party this year and i can't decide whether to go dressed as Spain or to go patrioticly. The dilemma! Our entry is pretty rubbish this year, by a guy called James Fox- and its a bit slow in my mind. It might do quite well but i don't think there's a hope in hell of us winning. However, that may be down to the fact that the rest of Europe hates us now too...lol

You know..., it's not really fair that the 4 biggest countries have an advantage this year. Just because they contribute more to the European Broadcasting Union they never have to go through the half final. That makes no sense, so I guess I won't be watching.

They always submit a classy ballad with a lady dressed in a lovely ballgown. Not many people in France actually care/know about it as far as i'm aware, so they always go for the classy option with no chance of them winning.

Yeah, for my part, I don't care for Eurovision.
But I read in the papers they are submitting a girl from my region this year (I think she's like 17).
I have no idea what she sounds like, I just saw the article with a pic of her, she looks cute by the way. :-P
She plays the piano apparently.

Its where all of the countries in the European Broadcasting Union (for some reason Israel is one of them, strange i know) enter songs and compete with each other in a tv show on a saturday night. They all perform their songs, and then everyone in that country can vote. There is a long section where each country reports which points (out of 12) go to which country- most countries vote for the countries they are chums with, or the songs which had a gimmick in. (The Estonian entry won because her skirt changed into a shorter one last year, lol). Then the country that wins hosts it the next year.

Some countries take it really seriously, like Denmark who have huge street parties and a proper big contest to decide the song they enter, some countries don't care at ALL like France, and some countries think its a complete joke like the UK where a commentator called Terry Wogan takes the piss out of every single one of the acts (so much so he has been banned from a lot of countries).

Its like a massive kitsch competition basically. And very famous!

lol that sums it up pretty well!

In Spain we've gone from not caring at all - which happened to up to 3 years ago - to everyone being very interested, having specials on tv and all! lol It's all because 3 years ago was when the 1st edition of the Spanish Pop Idol began, and the winner is the one who represents Spain in Eurovision. The program became really popular and so did Eurovision. Now, as Pop Idol becomes less and less popular with the new editions (hardly anybody knows who this year's contestants were), the same is happening to Eurovision (again!)

It's funny though, how everytime we DON'T win, they keep using the same excuses they used in the times of Franco (when, btw, Eurovision was really popular!): "the Scandinavian countries all vote for each other, so do the Benelux countries, the Baltic countries, and blah blah blah poor whiny Spain has no chums in Europe!" lol

Don't portugal always vote for you? The UK is the only truely friendless nation in europe. Other countries even (apparently... ahem) tamper with our microphones. lol

I guess we have Portugal, yeah. But they don't even always take part, and Italy (potential chums) haven't taken part either since 1997  :?

hey, now that I think of it, since the government has changed and we're now supposed to be best friends with Germany and France (again) someone may actually vote for us! (lol that's actually the first slightly good thing I've been able to come up with about the change in government, how sad)

Yeah! *hmph* last year hannah and i went as Holland and Italy and neither of them were in it- so we felt like right knobs!

I don't think Spain will have aaaany problems this year (despite its CRAP entry, lol). You'll get the sympathy votes and just about everyone who disagreed with the war (i.e the whole of Europe). Bring on the votes!

Oh yes, very true aswell Scum. *hangs head in shame* I was trying to think of some countries who always vote for us...but i can't!

P.S We do however know that anyone who does vote for us is voting for sheer musical genius. A reassuring thought i feel.

Oh really?? If it's that song then they have great chances of winning, the song is huuuuuuge here! It's even got to #1 on the charts (and it's in Romanian  !)

I hope FYR Macedonia get through! I can still remember the dance routine from the muchos catchy (sounds like it was sung out of tune but it was on a different scale) "i love you 100%" they had a few years ago!

Do countries vote for this? I really hope some of the novelty ones get through- whats the point otherwise!?

Did anybody watch the semi-final last night? It was oh so chuckleworthy! What I'd give to hear Terry Wogan's comments on that! A couple of entries or 3 were good though.

I was going to post the link to the Eurovision site but for some obscure reason every time I've tried to my comp restarted so if anyone else can do it, go ahead.

Hmmm yes, it was on BBC Three but i couldn't bear to watch it before the ACTUAL event if you know what i mean. I don't like it being on 2 nights! If Spain win nere, we will go next year, haha. I just hope those semi finals didn't exclude all the crap/funny entries. Then it would be rubbish!

We came 10th! It is a bit of a disgrace really, even though I thought we'd do worse. And guess who we got 12 points from?? Andorra and Portugal!! Ta-daaaa! (can I hear you say "tactical voting"? lol) We would've got 12 from Italy, shame they weren't taking part! :P

Hehe yes, Rosie was right to go as Spain. If we'd known before I would have suggested some more glittterrrrrr with the outfit to go along with the performance.

I'm still shocked at the Bosnian and Serbian entries being top10 - the Serbian almost won! wth? Anyway, it was a great laugh

Oooh guess what? This friend of mine, Jaime (the one who texted Rosie and who knows about all things Eurovision) told me Australia, Morocco and some other country (could it have been Egypt? I can't remember!) had requested to take part in Eurovision?!??  8O  Have they not read the "Euro" bit in "Eurovision"?? I'd be very very VERY shocked if they were let in, but after having Turkey and *gasp* Israel taking part, you never know...

AUSTRALIA!? Nooo, though we did enter Gina G who was australian.  I count Turkey as in Europe, after all they are being considered for entry- its also important that europe doesn't become a christian club, lol. But Israel- that i still don't get, i mean i know they're part of the EBU but WHHHHY!? lol
