Okay....so that Enron dude turned himself over to the FBI yesterday....now if he is convicted, he can get up to 200 years in prison....200 YEARS?!?!?!....not possible....why can't they just say LIFE IN PRISON...thats basically what it is.....cause you ain't gonna live to see 200 years pass by....it's physically impossible to serve a 200 term in prison....not even 100 years (that is unless you were imprisoned at birth)....
sorry for ranting....it just bugs me.....it's stupid.......

I guess you never know what medical science may come up with in the decades before he dies.

They do it for loads of cases- mainly serial killers. I don't see anything wrong with it- it just displays the severity of the case even more. Also, appealing against 'life imprisonment' is very different to appealing against 200 years in prison.

It gives him hope! Geez 8O .

let the punishment fit the crime
frankly, I think they should take his money and make him live on the outside as a poor working slob like me, that'll teach him

i remember having a conversation about that with my health teacher, and she said that it prevents the person from being able to get out at all - because say you were sentanced to like 30 years in prison, can't you get out before that with good behavior and all? making it 200 years or X amount of years keeps that stuff from making a difference. i think. i dunno. i could just be talking out of my ass, which is more probable.

yeah...but if they just say "life in prison without the possibility of parole" it's the same thing as saying 200 years....and it's more realistic....
oh...unless they decided to keep the corpse there for the remainder of the guys sentence...

haha this same thing annoys me... I always wondered WHY they would do that.
-
I get annoyed by that as well.
Especially when they say the convict gets 'life PLUS 5 years' or something like that, haha.

I'm guessing it's because in several countries (like the UK, I don't know about the US, I claim to know very little about US law), as stupid as it may sound, a 'life sentence' is a certain term of imprisonment (in the UK it's 25 years), rather than the rest of your life.
Besides it sounds more impressive to say 200 years in prison, rather than just 'life'.

Doesn't to me - 'life' sounds way more dramatic...

Or you could take away all his money and send him to a hard labor camp, working in a chicken factory for 20 years. That would be enough.
