Title: break-up songs
Post by: Holly on July 26, 2004, 12:06:04 am
Ok... my best friend broke up with her boyfriend of 26 months in April. She was and is totally in love with him, and refuses to get over him, even though he's with a new girl now and told her he doesnt love her at all. They still hang out, which i'm totally against, because everytime after she sees him she cries forever. I'm trying to get her to understand she needs to forget him and not see him anymore. She said she cant, which i understand, but she needs to break contact with him so she can heal.
I want to make a CD for her full of break-up songs, about how now the person is better off without the lover and stronger. Definitely no songs about crying over someone.

So far I have these songs:
Stronger- Britney Spears
Leave- JoJo
Favorite Mistake- Sheryl Crow
Better Off- Ashlee Simpson
Surrender- Ashlee Simpson
He Wasn't- Avril Lavigne
Out of My Heart- BBmak
Are You Happy Now?- Michelle Branch (thanks Tia)
Fighter- Christina Aguilera (thanks Tia)
Afterglow- Vanessa Carlton Thanks Jessica!
Walk Away- Christina Agiler (thanks VaderDawsn)
Walk On- U2

That's so sweet of you!
Here are some ideas:

Christina Aguilera - Fighter
Michelle Branch - Are You Happy Now?

And maybe you should stick Red Ditty on the end, just to make her smile :D

That's all I can think of right now...

Thanks Tia! those songs are good! I don't know about sticking Vanessa on there though. "Pretty Baby" was their song together.

You're welcome! Red Ditty shows a totally different side of VC, so you might be okay, but I don't know... Your call! :)

I thought about that...but it's not so much an 'I'm better of without him' song as an 'I'm going to wallow in my self pity/anger' song. Did that make any sense? Never mind

That makes sense.... I've been trying to think of songs to add, too...but all the songs I can think of are wallowing songs and not better off songs, including that one. LOL.

i think it's a mix of both. because there is part where she goes:

And now I'll make my way
Through another day
'cause I know better now
You'll drop another line
On someone else's time
But in me you still resound

but it's that last line that's kind of not the "i'm getting over you" theme.

what about Afterglow? not really a break up song, but an uplifter none the less

I saw that small bit, but I thought it didn't really compensate for all the wallowing - that's why I rejected it.

Afterglow is a good idea!

yeah - i mean, it's one line but the rest of it is pretty much saying "i may be getting over you but i think drowning myself in ice cream and crying is a better option" - which reminds me - i love ice cream.

and i heart afterglow. 'tis my favorite VC song :-)

Here are some songs from my collection that would like to add to the mix:

Matchbox20 - Push
No Doubt - Sunday Morning
No Doubt - Detective
Mary J. Blige - Not Gonna Cry
Christina Aguilera - Walk Away (place this right before "Fighter")
Vanessa Carlton - Wanted  (this one got me through a couple of breakups)

Hope this helps your friends out.  I totally know what it's like to be in her shoes.  Listening to breakup songs definitely have helped me through those times.  I commend your efforts for your friend.

Thanks for all the ideas everyone!  :D

Jess, Afterglow is a great choice! thank you!  :D
Vader, Walk Away is perfect too! thanks! The other choices I looked up the lyrics to, and they wouldnt work for her... but thanks!  :D

"Burn" makes her cry so much she can't listen to it, she told me already, and I already have JoJo listed, but thanks Joey!  :)

Keep the songs coming everyone... you're all helping very much! *hugs*

It's better they're on the same train.  Then they won't crash into each other . . .now you on the other hand better make sure to find that train or one on a different track.

CA's "Walk Away" is more about fighting temptations like underage drinking, drugs, etc. That's my opinion, though.

Ember - My Finest Hour
Having to Let Go - Rookie of the Year
Concealer - Thursday (I assume that's what this is about)
Angie - The Stones
Konstantine - Something Corporate (Let's just say so)
I Miss You - Incubus (Possibly)
I Miss You - Blink 182
Motorcycle Drive By - Third Eye Blind
How's it Going to Be - Third Eye Blind

That's all I can think of at the moment. I'm really pushing myself to think acoustic but nothing break up-related is coming to me.

Love Stinks
The J Geils Band

*You love her, but she loves him
And he loves somebody else
You just can't win
And so it goes till the day you die
This thing they call love is gonna make you cry
I've had the blues, the reds, and the pinks
One thing's for sure
Love stinks

all time best evah!

Brian McKnight - One Last Cry
Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive
Keb Mo - You Can Love Yourself
Leann Rimes - You Made Me Find Myself
Allure - All Cried Out
Let's not forget Rinse by Vanessa

On a lighter note One More Minute by Weird Al says the same kind of thing in a humorous way.

Haha.

I guess I might seem kinda bitter
You got me feeling down in the dumps
'Cause I'm stranded all alone in the gas station of love
And I have to use the self-service pumps

Wow, TMI.
